  • Trying to grip it and rip it? Don't be silly. You're missing out on a better deadlift and bigger PRs. Let's fix this.
Learn to lift WITHOUT a coach! Spend the day with Phil at the Self-Sufficient Lifter Camp and learn to squat, press, and deadlift as well as how to self-evaluate your lifts while training in your garage or commercial gym without a coach. Head here for more info and to get signed up:

When deadlifting (and performing other lifts), we strongly recommend lifting shoes (see our video below on that topic). Here are some solid options:

When deadlifting, using chalk should be a given. Training without chalk is silly. Get and use chalk.
Spider Chalk (it's our favorite at Testify)

Love it. These gyms with loud music prevent one from hearing the click. I like it quieter and so I can be present.

The ability to hear the click is nice, but in lieu of that, you can still feel it when it happens, so that will help.

"This is an analog process" - This is sticking with me better than any other deadlift cue. On my deadlift today I focused on a smooth turn of the dial from 1 to 10. Prior to this, I realized I was smooth from about 1 to 6, but would get anxious and suddenly spin it to 11. Things felt better today. Thanks for the tip!

When I’m coaching new lifters I don’t even have to watch. I just hear that click and know they didn’t pull the slack haha.

I’ve been trying to deadlift for 3 years. I got to 315 x 1 but it hurts, every time. I’ve been coached and I’ve watched numerous videos like this and it still doesn’t feel right. I just turned 40, not sure if I can justify keeping it up with the pain.
Squats are still going strong :-)

I'm sorry to hear about the pain in the deadlifts, but I'm glad to hear the squats are going well!
Have you worked with a Starting Strength Coach? We have several (including myself) at Testify, but this is not intended to be a sales pitch - you can probably find one within a reasonable distance from you, and if not, many of us do remote, real-time coaching as well. We use deadlifting on a regular basis to help with people's back pain, and I would certainly love for you to be able to productively train the deadlift and reap its strength benefits.

My gym owner is a SS guy although he’s not certified yet. He’s gone to the seminars in Wichita Falls and read the books. He’s got degrees this sort of thing, too. I’m sure if I were more intentional about it we could figure it out but so far it has never been comfortable.

@@BYLRPhil None of that means anything. Find a credible SSC and they will help you with your deadlift and probably challenge your mindset towards the deadlift, too. Don't sleep on it, the deadlift can get you very strong!
