I often hear people say that the HDR on a new film doesn’t make a big difference, and every time I hear it I have to wonder if we’re watching the same discs. I don’t think you’ll find it on many best of lists, but the 4K of Ambulance is one of my favorites as far as newer films go. The ambulance lights alone hit you in the face in HDR in a way that simply isn’t possible in SDR. And yes, it is possible to have a 4K disc of a 2K source be a marked improvement in detail over the Blu-ray. If it’s anamorphic 2K, such as La La Land, you can see a pretty drastic difference since the source resolution exceeds that of 1080p. If it’s flat 2K, you can still see sizeable improvements in the compression, such as Knives Out or Boyhood. And there’s also the matter of chroma subsampling, where the chroma resolution on a 1080p disc is a quarter that of the master, whereas upscaling it to 4K yields the full chroma resolution of the 2K master, such as Into the Spider-Verse, among many other animated films. (live action too, of course, but it does tend to be more obvious in animation with sharp lines of color)
Literally got mine signed by Cynthia last week as she was on tour here in the UK. I also accidentally ended up with two copies so I gave her my spare. Things work out sometimes!

I just got the Blu-ray edition a couple days ago. No interest in 4K or to be specific, UHD.
Well the blu-rays still look great! I'm glad they don't do 4K only releases when they put out a new title, then everyone can enjoy.
