  • Japan in the early 20th century was still finding its place in the world after ending the isolationism of centuries. Will Russia look to reassert itself after its humiliating defeat 5 years ago? Will the European powers look to curb an Asian great power like they did with China? Or will China itself prove to be a threat, or perhaps a target of conquest...
    Just building and peace this episode, don't worry though - massive battles to come!
    A new campaign! 1910 start date with the historical AI personalities and on Normal difficulty. There's no extra rules aside from a ban on using the strategy of scrapping flawed ships - all must serve! This is a BETA campaign, that means the save may break. If it does I will skip time to the next start date and keep playing.

    I believe the Soviet Union / Russian federation ran into the negative range bug for the Admiral Kuznetsov carrier. You need to unlock the escort tugs and shore side power remote to resolve it.

    You could build a BC on a BB hull. Just don't armour it too heavily.

    Smoke interference doesn't seem to mater much any more, unless you were facing the bow directly at the enemy, and reversing. if its just billowing behind you i don't think the penalty is actually applied. So stack those stacks! till you get at least 115% efficiency. ~200%+ if you have the deck space.

    The range is buggy when you don't have a funnel on. With the new cruising range stuff, the funnel now matters.

    Hey bruv, smoke interference isn't nearly as nefarious as it used to be. Even like 50 interference is like, 2 percent penalty to accuracy. That's worth it in my opinion.
    Alternatively, 95% engine efficiency is absolutely fine. You get barely any penalty, certainly nothing that is going to be noticeable during combat. Better to have 20kn at 95% efficiency than 18kn at 105% lol

    Kinda dissipointed you kept only using one funnel when the light cruiser would have needed 3 or 4 to get any kind of speed, and the battlecruiser at least 2. But eh, didn't end up using either much. The range thing is weird though.

      yeah
      smoke interference is nowehere near as impactful now
      i have a cl with about 80 and it gives a -4% base accuracy debuff; it only really effects firing behind you, and if youre running away that could be an issue but... running away is for cowards

      So that's good.
      I would also suggest trying to hold a vector where their smoke obscures the foe but clears your own rangefinders.
      That is you shoot upwind.

    Now that you're playing Japan, I expect you to use 18+ inch guns at some point, considering the Yamato and Super Yamato designs (18.1 and 20 inches, respectively).

    12 inch guns have always had absurd accuracy. I have no idea if its deliberate or something intentional.

    Out of curiosity, do you feel the benefits from forced boilers are worth the increased engine vibrations? Curious about your thoughts on it.

      I use them to reduce funnel count, reducing the citadel length, and thus the armor weight. But after a bit, you'll have high capacity funnels and not have to use them unless you've got a weird hull

    I have started 1.09 in exactly same place, except I just built a small 10x 12" heavy BC (28kt fast battleship) class and an escort destroyer with 3" as my initial ships. The cruisers available is either way too slow (with a reasonable number of funnels) to be effective at the beginning, and I can have 1 BC for the cost of 2 cruisers!

    I think that you are too scared of smoke, with the way smoke can be avoided by paying attention to wind, there is less need to worry about it, especially early on

      Agreed. Plus the accuracy penalty is minimal even with pretty high smoke interference.

      I remember the first time I encountered a battle cruiser... I got high explosive loaded, be sure amount of caffeine I've consumed so far should have rendered me dead, and I charge out from behind an island and a heavy cruiser to see what I thought was a battleship at first but then realized was moving at mach fuck

    Most inaccurate thing about this game is the US having a large Naval Budget in 1910.

    With the new build flaws feature, I expect the AI to zoom right past it's normal USN bureau of ordnance level of incompetence and manage goat ropes on par with HMS Captain.

    Interesting that you say the light cruisers are terrible. I've been playing the 1.09 Beta, and I find my light cruisers kick a lot of butt.
    EDIT: Ah, you're starting in 1910. That might be why.

    You didn't adjust the armor thicknesses on the light cruiser. He drives with the AI setting.

    Wonder if the game will let tender ships be built . As supply ships like German U Boats had . This would help extend reach of ships and resupply for repair parts at sea ( Evan ferry troops to make colonies better able to defend vrs invasion? )

      Disagree.
      I don’t think any naval architect, engineer or shipwright was ever heard to say “yeah this ship definitely has a ten percent chance to have a serious defect.”
      Not in the Nelsons nor KGVs with their baulky gun mounts, nor the up-armoring of HMS London or up-gunning of the Mogamis; not the excessive forecastle wetness of the Scharnhorsts, least of all the Italian cruisers with guns so close together in turrets that interference between shells rendered them useless, was there indication in the design phase that “something’s gonna be wrong with this ship.”
      It was only after they were commissioned, began working up, or even in active service, that faulty gun mounts, weak hulls, vulnerable power plants etc. were exposed.

      @@dougjb7848 I would agree with this if it was easier to fix flaws. Like, PoW after they found out her quad-turrets were kinda crappy was due for a rebuild. Here, we can't have a ship that goes 'Oh crap, this is actually pretty shite, let's have her go to the drydock for a refit'.

    How do you "fix " getting stuck at "building new ships"? I'm at 1934 in a 1930 campaign and I've spent the last two game years force closing the game & reloading, which a) I think has screwed everyone else and b) has stopped my own progress finally. I haven't even got to fight yet...

    Found they absolutely messed up the formation system. Again...
    Had a 18kn BB, and 20kn CA.
    One ca rammed the BBS ASS. And the rest were waaaaaaay behind.

    Yamashiro got screwed over because of the name. That is an UNLUCKY ship name. RIP Fusou-class. Fusou and Yamashiro are good girls but damn are they unlucky. Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES should you take it anywhere near Surigao Straight. Just don't do it. Trust me, that is a BAD IDEA!

    I've started in the new beta with the USA...and found it extremely hard to play, at least starting out in 1890. The distance involved in crossing the oceans means your ships have horrible performance when they actually get to where the wars are...and the nations you would logically be fighting (such as the Spanish) don't put any ships to fight in the Western hemisphere other than the occasional stray.
    The bugs (I know its only a beta, but still) have also kind of killed it for me. My 1890 campaign only made it to 1907 when a bug kept crashing the game immediately after a battle. I gave up on my second attempt when I was stuck in a seemingly endless war with Russia but wasn't getting the Naval budget boost that usually comes with being at war AND I was seeing the diplomacy choices that usually don't appear when you are at war, so something was definitely wrong.
    That said, once the get the bugs ironed out and make some other improvements (please let the map wrap around instead of making you scrolling all the way to the left or right when trying to cross the Pacific) the new update introduced some really cool stuff. I think that the Ottoman Empire and some of the South American nations should be playable though (such as Brazil).

    Why didn’t you go with the large cruiser hull (BC)?
    It’s one of the most efficient hulls in terms of large guns to cost and displacement, though it is a bit weird...
    And you end up having a ship at 18 knots, but the R-class worked, so...

    Unless it’s the French, or Germans, Pre-Dreadnoughts aren’t that interesting,
    the only interesting Pre-Dreadnought hull you’re missing out on as Japan is the Old-Pre-Dreadnought, which at max size can have side mounted 10 inch guns, The hull is horrible though, you get overweight too easily
    Then again, there are the French and German ones that allow 2 side mounted 10 inch guns...

    This game absolutely sucks. The whole ship design is a crappy gimmik that has no effect on gameplay and he AI cheats beyond belief to such an extent as to make it unplayable.
