Lately, as I’ve stepped into my fifties, I’ve been reflecting on this very idea. What you said-“Remember to live”-is so simple, yet it’s something I see so many people around me forgetting to do. Over the years, in conversations with those seeking guidance, a common regret from the older generation has been: “My focus was misplaced. I should have worked less, spent more time with my children, and simply allowed myself to enjoy life.”

I am 57 and my father passed away this week at the age of 91. Now both of my parents are gone - it's a very strange feeling. My parents grew up during the first great depression and always lived their lives accordingly - very frugal, very strict, and never really "lived" life to its fullest. My outlook on life is live for today but plan for tomorrow. RIP mom and dad - I love you both and miss you.
My condolences, for your lost. Is not easy to understand, that a period of life is gone. Now in this time we are living, we miss very much the Past, or We think about it, with Nostalgia.
My late wife spent her last 5 years of life with our son. His only time with her, from birth until 5. Then she got stage 4 cancer from no where, and died 5 months later. I'm so thankful they were able to be together those years, while I commuted long distances each day to work and home again. So glad there was no preschool or daycare for him in his most formative years. Now he is smart, strong, brave, handsome, tall, etc, and just turned 9.
Jeffrey what a selfless man you are to focus on the time your wife spent with your child. Your son will truly benefit for the rest of his life from those precious five years. A Mother’s love for her son is monumental to shaping him. It’s tragic that you both lost her so young. I believe the power of the love and strength she brought to your son in five years will be with him for the rest of his life. Your son a blessed that he had a wonderful Mother and a wonderful Father. I wish you both well ❤.
You are right in many things but the best gifts your wife gave your son is not so easy to capture in words, it have something to do with being a whole person, meaning accepting and loving yourself.

I saw the light ten years ago when I was 47. Since then I have only worked part time only. 25 hours a week is all I do. The rest of my time is spent doing what I want to do, not what my employer wants me to do. Don't be a slave to the system.
Yep, you have to cut your cloth to suit. Be prepared to make do or learn to make things yourself if you need them. Been part-time for several years now, never looked back!
I wish I had felt the freedom to think that way when I was 21. I'd be a lot happier now. A big part of this is simplifying one's life by keeping material possessions to a minimum.

It is better to listen to elders whom you know are full of wisdom. I know many older folks who are full of themselves and give bad advice. But that doesn't give you an excuse to ignore them all.
We're primed from young children to become productive humans in a factory-like existence, disconnected from everything that matters in life, divorced from the wonder of nature and the cosmos we exist in. The only ending living a life like that: regret.

Things I've told my kids - 1. No one dies wishing they took fewer vacations, 2. When you're an adult, no one gives a hoot what your SAT, ACT or any other grade was in high school; they just don't care, 3. Money comes and money goes, but who you are matters when it goes as you'll need to pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and do it again, 4. Always pay yourself first when you are working - that is, put away for retirement, save in your savings account, etc. - if you don't look out for your future, no one else will, 5. No one cares how you live, don't spend money to impress the neighbors, only impress yourself and you'll realize half of what you think you want, you don't really want or need, 6. use cash in your local commmunity - a dollar in cash is a dollar, a dollar via credit card is 97-cents to the shop owner, and 7. no matter how hard it is, throughout your life, just do the next right thing.
When I was a child, my dad and I were taking a train back from a holiday and he saw a colleague there, late at night, coming back from the office. And my dad told him in a friendly way "what are you doing here? you shouldn't work so late". I think he was trying to show me that there was more to life than working long hours.
Just turned 54 and spent far too many years existing instead of LIVING. Living means different things to different people, but for me it means doing what "I" want instead of what society expects. I roam the forest, sip whisky, play with my cat, cook food for myself and work as little as possible. If my bills are paid, roof over my head and food in my belly I'm content. I live a very monkish life, minimalism with little excess and while it can be tough at times, it allows me to spend my time and money on what truly matters to me.
They say your life passes before your eyes before you die. I had it wrong when I believed it was minutes before death. I've reached the end of my life now and have gained great awareness. I'm shown events that I'd forgotten and seen how many mistakes I made. I was so, so driven by the quest for success and recognition that I missed time with my sons and family. Times I selfishly did what I wanted caused others pain and now I'm filled with guilt and pain, knowing I hurt the people I love. If you're still young, put your family first and cultivate a warm living relationship with others. Don't spend your senior years looking back, in pain, at all the missed moments that can't be recaptured.😞
I didn't ask for this life. I got no excuses, no complaints to mention. I have gave, though I wouldn't give me. I've asked for nothing, for what I find worthy. What should I expect, nothing. I don't and I won't. I know that, if I like it or not. Man is never satisfied. Always wanting more than he can carry. What he holds sacred is what he can't corrupt. You can bet he has his own interest in mind even there. To live for ever. No since in crying about it in the end. You can say you were here, you lived. That's one helluve of a gift. If it was meant to last, it wouldn't be worth nothing. There's only the moment. Today is the first day of the rest of your life. You want contentment, get busy.
I couldn't agree more. I used to say to my parents when I was a kid, why do they make young people sit at desks all day, why aren't we out doing things when we are young. I only know this because my mother told me this. She also said she regrets working so much when me and my sister were kids. HE'S RIGHT! Don't be a slave to a clock. Live ❤️
Yep, one of my kid's hasn't sat down since she left school, many mundane jobs , no money, but is still seeing the world and takes people for better or worse. Your only young once ,let them be!
A lot of people still don't realise they work for politicians, they get the loaf of bread and we are supposed to be grateful for the crumbs they let us have. ❤️🇬🇧
I too am in my fifties (just!) and I COMPLETELY resonate with what you say. I spent over 20 years relentlessly exhausting myself working in the NHS and it completely wrecked my health in ways I'd never imagined. It was very scary. I had been searching for an exit strategy out of the trap but didn't take enough action and I was brought to a complete stop with my health. I got my exit strategy but not in a way I'd imagined. I take nothing for granted now and get out into nature as much as possible and my life is infinitely better than it has been for decades. I'm utterly skint but I don't care. Actual LIVING is preferable 🥰
Same age, same experience, same country. Not the NHS in my case, but the corporate world. Nature and taking pleasure in the smaller things in life has been cathartic. Things I wouldn't have noticed before (always too exhausted, just existing). I have much less money, but much more happiness. Who would have thought?
I totally agree! I'm 34 and I just started living life last year. Went on a solo trip to a different country to climb a mountain and have an adventure and was the best decision. It took becoming single and sober to realize I wasn't living the right way, now all I can think about is the next adventure. It's not too late!! Sober adventures away from home beat drunk/high times in my hometown that I had become too comfortable in. Live like you're dying, because you are!
Take note of this. I had something happen at work mid November that if I hadn’t reacted split second would’ve killed me. Not just maimed me. Life can end in an instant.
Glad to hear you are all right. My father slipped and broke his neck so fast as clicking your fingers. He survived but has lived disabled and in pain for 20 years. Life is precious.
I just turned 70. Wish I had worked smarter, not harder. Not worry about having things or what others think. I wish I had my eyes opened much earlier. Thank you for sharing. You are so right.
I have noticed that you added a Welsh Flag emoji to your comment. That being said, does your daughter by any chance suffer from Autoimmune issues?? I ask this, because there is a correlation between autoimmune issues and people who are of celtic lineage, and there might be some ways to curtail it!!!
@ Thank you for your reply. Yes there is a ‘faulty’ gene on my husbands side of the family. This is the underlying cause of their problems which are autoimmune related.
I like your reference to Wind in the Willows. This is very close to how we live. Just the 4 of us, we potter about visiting each other, cooking, walking, chopping firewood, growing food, working as little as possible to pay for things we need. Life is much more important than money.
When I lived east of San Diego 15 years ago I would lie in the bed of my truck and watch the Milky Way with zillions❤ of stars. I want that experience again. So healing and majestic.

Bjorn, this is a BEAUTIFUL MESSAGE. You can make more money, but time is a commodity of which you can never earn more. Years ago during a buying to trip to Mexico with a girlfriend who sold Mexican home decor, my friend tried to convince the talented builders to make two or three more items a month and their income would really increase. The people were not at all interested in making more money. it would require spending less time with their family, and reduced leisure time. Their children were happy playing in the dirt with a stick for drawing. Since then, I have never seen children as content as those wee ones in a remote Mexican village.
I spent many hours in my home shop with two dogs and then added two children. In 2010 I tried/tested making videos about the rich simple life. I am still mostly ignored. Censorship is also a major aspect in sharing the simple life with the world(a jealous world). 😅
I was just depressed as a child and isolated from others around me, i just couldnt relate to them. They were like a different species to me. That was an issue i had people around me i just couldnt really connect with.
A man should walk lightly on Mother Earth, because he knows that the Earth does not belong to him, it is he who belongs to the Earth, Mitakuye Oyasin ❤.
Beautiful. Words of wisdom. "Wind in the Willows" is a favorite childhood book. I had worked very hard to the brink of burnout throughout my 20s and did not achieve what I had expected. At 34 I threw caution to the wind and amid the slings and arrows of criticism set out to live a life worth living. My daily life was as dull as the people around me. I never regretted that decision as a new adventure lay ahead. The system has a way of sucking one back in, as it were. I turn 66 next week and am reflecting on a life worth living. I've had successes and failures. It's part of life, yet I try to live by the words, be true to yourself. In the end, that's really all we have. We can't take anything or anyone with us.
It was 1983 and I was 7 years old. Our class got the opportunity to go to the school library for the very first time. We were told to pick out a book to read for the next few weeks. I saw this amazing looking old book high up on the tall shelf and it looked thick and heavy. I somehow got help from a grown up to bring it down for me and read the cover, "Wind in the Willows," I instantly fell in love that day with that book. Sadly, I still have never finished the full book, but I still ironically consider it one of my favorites. Another favorite was the Velveteen Rabbit.
I like to work and feel productive. I will probably do it as long as I can. I have no family and gave up on friends. Just kept meeting toxic people...but I love my dogs. So 'what really matters' to me is to be as productive as I can in moderation and then enjoy my puppies and watching the plants grow.
I like you also like to work and be productive your dogs will be wonderfully companions to you.a lovley dog is a sure best buddy all the best to you enjoy your days
Great advice, Bjorn! At 75, I have regrets about not having spent more time with my family than I did. Work was a necessary part of living….I am still working three days a week only because I cannot afford to retire. I would make many changes if I could do it over again. Thank you for wise words. Hopefully they will touch the lives of young viewers, and allow them to live their lives, before it’s too late.
I have devoted myself to motherhood and homeschooling for 27 years and I don't regret it. Nothing is more precious to me than the time I spend with my blessed children. In spite of (or because of) the unspeakable tragedies we have experienced together, I am healing and waking up to the family and the life I have dreamed of since I was a little girl and first knew what it was to feel utterly lost and alone in a big scary world. I will die happy knowing, no matter what kind of world we live in, my children will never experience that kind of heart ache because they have a mother who loves them. I am the luckiest woman in the world because I know it. ♥️ ♥️ ♥️ ♥️ ♥️ ♥️
Really like your videos! Im 26 years old from Norway, and you have inspired me alot to get more out in our nature. Your jomsviking books has gotten me to start like reading again too. A few years ago I spent most of my time inside on the computer. Now I spend most of my time outside, reading or working out -thanks to your wise messages. Its hard to get my few friends together out in nature, but I have grown pretty comfortable adventuring alone, and I also find peace in that. We take this message you speak of in this video for granted in this modern society. Thank you for the important reminder Bjørn.
Truer words never spoken. I’m trying to get out more, live more, read more, do less, spend less time on RUclips, spend more time with loved ones. What you say is very true indeed. I learned this lesson the hard way age 16, after coming back from school one afternoon, and hearing that my father had suddenly died aged 50. He was one of those people caught in the hamster wheel of having to work too much to keep up a certain standard of living and paying the bills. That evening, I told myself that I would ensure to maintain a healthy balance between working and living. Life is not just about being able to buy ever more things, and most people do not take the time to enjoy moments such as a beautiful sunset, or smelling the air on a rainy morning. Now past 60, I look back and know that, although I may not have as much stuff as other people, I largely managed to find the freedom to enjoy the great outdoors and to avoid that dreadful situation of just being another cog in the system, while waiting to be chucked aside at retirement. Like you, I am horrified at the number of people staring at their "smart" phones all the time.
Aw, you're lovely Bjorn - really appreciate your words, gives me strength when all the nonsense around me is getting me down. I just spent a day in the mountains, every time it is so difficult to return to the madness, but seeing a video from Bjorn lifts my weary spirits 😊 Wishing you and your lovely family a contented day. .
I too worked with in Palative care. I miss it, but enjoy Iving, more! I retired myself at 51, after 26 years working in the health care profession. It got the better of me, or should I say my colleague's did! I ended up with a mental health illness - work related., That was the last straw for me. No job should make you feel like crap, so I left! Did not even bother fighting for early retirement on ill health grounds. I simply resigned! Life is not all about work but living. My job learned me that, I am now living, not waiting no longer! 😊
I'm Half Norwegian,I get you big man,I lost my mother coming up five years, and it feels so strange not hearing her,and to see and to cuddle her,and you are so right,we need to go back to nature and live has we were meant to,but your words are so true Skol!
Because of your age and wisdom people all over are learning from you. Yours is a legacy about your traditions, nationality. Just seeing the land inspires one to dream of a different existence. Thank you Bjorn
Bjorn, Thank you! These are wise words, especially for the younger ones to heed, IF they can. I was able to break more free at a young age and made most of the mistakes one could. I traveled the world and held many kinds of jobs. I managed to do this without dress shirts and neck ties. Became a trained and skilled artisan in wood and wood products. And had a 50 year career. I was one of the lucky ones. My Goodness, how I loved the '50s & 60's. Yesterday I turned 78. Come now, O twilight.
i totally agree with you! im 52 and wish i knew this sooner. i did waste a lot of time when i was younger but its ok. ive changed that now and i will never go back 😊
Excellent advice Every time i watch your videos , seeing you speaking, i imagine you back in the period of vikings looking pretty much the same & living even similiar in the woods. 😁 Yea, i remember being in the train for over an hour per day then back again over an hour to get to the clinic. I remember seeing all the people on the train who looked robot like & sad and tied & drained , adrenal exhausted and i told myself years ago " i dont think this is for me to do daily as i dont want to turn into them". I would lose my soul & will to live. Winter worse as dark at 5pm too so no time for anything.
I grew up in an industrial part of a sprawling suburb South of Los Angeles California and sought every opportunity to explore the few undeveloped plots of land as though they were a vast sprawling wilderness. I retired to a vast sprawling wilderness in the central highlands of Arizona 5 years ago to live my childhood fantasies as reality. As your message conveys we should endeavor to follow our desires for adventure as early as possible so our bodies can support these activities.
I believe that just as our body’s cells renew every seven years, a person should also have the opportunity to refresh their mind and spirit with a longer break (3-4 months) every seven years. Many overworked and unwell retirees no longer enjoy travelling, and their spirits have been dulled by routine.
Wise words. We all make these mistakes. Here in the US, both husband and wife are working and dropping infants off at daycare, paying an insane mortgage, car payments, and high food prices. It goes by so fast.
It is what you were designed for. To reproduce yourselves and raise up your replacements. Life truly begins on the other side of life. This side is a shadow of true existence. Be ready. The real show comes next.
Sometimes one just needs yet another video from our dear Bjørn to realize you may be "mad", but not the only "mad" person around. I could listen you for hours, sir. Take care and thanks for your advice.
Society has also pushed up the retirement age globally. This is a challenge for us, who are now approaching retirement age. We are expected to keep working until one foot is in the grave. We are disposable. People spend their lives working to be able to buy the things that society tells us we need. It's up to us to change our paradigm and live while there is time. Thanks for the video.
Reached 40 month ago, now at airport from Sahara desert, when I come home I'll buy an old chopper and drive the hell out of it. I am also releasing my first music single, don't care what anyone says and if it will not be a hit song. Those people who are saying you that you are too old for these things are jealous, afraid and they don't want you to live fully and adventurous life because they want you to be just like them so that they don't feel bad about themselves. This can DESTROY you if you don't ignore them! And don't let money stops you, all of my adventures are on a very small budget and I wouldn't change it because it's fun and you meet a lot of people and many funny stories at the end 😀

In my 50-ies as well. I regularly used to work overtime during weekends. Now I spend more time in nature instead. Even in a crowded country like the Netherlands, there fortunately are still a couple of very beautiful places.
70 soon....life lived as well and certainly as interesting as I could manage. I watched my mother who had fewer choices, and swore that would NOT be my life.
Thanks Bjørn. I have been reading 'Wind in the Willows' since 65 years ago. It is one of my favourite childhood books, that and 'Alice in Wonderland'. I'll be 73 years next month and life just gets better. Appreciate your videos, thanks. -Gabriel of Norway. Hilsen fra Nord Trøndelag.
I hear what you're saying, but I think it's possible to strike a balance. Most people have to work hard to support our families, especially with the world economy the way it is these days. But at the same time we should make sure to take care of what matters most - actually living and spending time with family.
Hard times made a hard life. The same still applies today. Without financial security, the means to do, there will be little to no doing. Then, those that have ruined their bodies making do for their hard times more than likely no longer has a choice. Everybody's different.
I wasted my youth on wild women & drink, the money's gone too. But I think im in no debt ,and try enjoying every day for itself.... Thanks BJORN, many of us feel exactly the same as you & I....⚔👣

We're primed from young children to become productive humans in a factory-like existence, disconnected from everything that matters in life, divorced from the wonder of nature and the cosmos we exist in. The only ending living a life like that: regret.

will turn 50 this summer. grew up ranching, had an opportunity to go full time fire/ems about 10 years ago. had to sell the cows due to time comitttments with the job. my son who's now 21 has been bugging me for the last couple years about getting cattle again and learning the cow business. long story short, quitting the fire service this summer and going back to ranching. my legacy is passing that knowledge to my son.
Thanks Bjorn for reminding. How we spend our days is how we spend our lives. It's snowing outside, I am going outside with my son to throw some snowballs :)
I hope it was fun🙂
Ha ha,I was let down asking any in my household for help shoveling that deep heavy white death ,my son is twisted and disgusting methhead, if you a praying person, pray four disturbing families get the confidence and control like our beloved Bjorn
Very wise words.
Damn, we’ll said. 👍🙏🏼💪🇺🇸
'remember to live'
three words which are absolutely vital to all of mankind.
thank you bjorn.
You are absolutely right. I am 67 now, and two years ago I started sailing, which is something I’ve always wanted to do.
OH, me too! I'll try to be happy for you and not jealous! :D not sailing yet..
Way to go!
Yes, sailing is a great feeling...❤
Yes you are my favorite woodsman! Love your videos.
Thanks a lot!
Why does most of us not get any financial education when young?
They say your life passes before your eyes before you die. I had it wrong when I believed it was minutes before death. I've reached the end of my life now and have gained great awareness. I'm shown events that I'd forgotten and seen how many mistakes I made. I was so, so driven by the quest for success and recognition that I missed time with my sons and family. Times I selfishly did what I wanted caused others pain and now I'm filled with guilt and pain, knowing I hurt the people I love. If you're still young, put your family first and cultivate a warm living relationship with others. Don't spend your senior years looking back, in pain, at all the missed moments that can't be recaptured.😞
tell THEM that.. REALLY open up about it so they KNOW you feel that..
that could change everything in how things are
I didn't ask for this life.
School is nothing but wage slave conditioning
A lot of people still don't realise they work for politicians, they get the loaf of bread and we are supposed to be grateful for the crumbs they let us have. ❤️🇬🇧
So true
Agreed and only getting worse.
I know! Crazy and wonderful how life can change in a turn 😀
@@loolahbin glad you got your mojo back
I totally agree!
You are wise!
'Live like you're dying, because you are'! Well, you're paying attention.
@cliftontorrence839 🙂
I've always noticed, when I get too comfortable, I get fat. Comfort kills :(
Take note of this.
58yrs old, and wish I would have taken notes while my mother was still here..

Excellent advice. Our children are only young for a short time and we cant ever get that back. The only thing we cant make is more time.

Never a truer word spoken. I am 58 with a husband and 21 year old daughter with chronic illness . Love life, live still and be grateful. 🏴🤗
I have noticed that you added a Welsh Flag emoji to your comment. That being said, does your daughter by any chance suffer from Autoimmune issues??
I ask this, because there is a correlation between autoimmune issues and people who are of celtic lineage, and there might be some ways to curtail it!!!
Carnivore diet. Check it out. Will change her life forever. It did so for me and so many others.
Lovely book indeed, time for a re-read :)
When I lived east of San Diego 15 years ago I would lie in the bed of my truck and watch the Milky Way with zillions❤ of stars. I want that experience again. So healing and majestic.

How long you travelled? Do you have family?
I love watching the stars and universe at night.
That was an issue i had people around me i just couldnt really connect with.
speaking truth and wisdom my friend

Wind in the willows is such a beautiful book
One of my favorites. I pass copies forward.
@WalburgisLuppus you have not finished the adventures of Toad -- the end of book? It's so fabulous!
@georgegrader9038 I plan to do so someday, I think I just never wanted their beautiful story to end. 😊
@@WalburgisLuppus that's also why I reread it every few years. I grew up around rivers like that. Lucky.

Great advice, Bjorn! At 75, I have regrets about not having spent more time with my family than I did. Work was a necessary part of living….I am still working three days a week only because I cannot afford to retire. I would make many changes if I could do it over again.

Needed this reminder today. 😊
Truer words never spoken. I’m trying to get out more, live more, read more, do less, spend less time on RUclips, spend more time with loved ones. Life is precious, and to quote Bob Marley, “if you know what life is worth, you would look for yours on earth, so now you see the light, stand up for your rights!” 💛🇨🇦🐻
I just spent a day in the mountains, every time it is so difficult to return to the madness, but seeing a video from Bjorn lifts my weary spirits 😊 Wishing you and your lovely family a contented day.
.
I worked in palliative care and saw many people at the end of their lives who felt depressed about the sum of their lives.
I am worried about euthanasia particularly in the UK. Particularly with people having to pay more tax if their parent dies after they are 75 .

Such fine words, Bjorn. I strive to give this message to people every video I upload. I wish I could put it as eloquently as you, my friend.
Hailsa Bjorn, watching the place I grew up in burning to the ground. I'm not homesick anymore.
i totally agree with you! im 52 and wish i knew this sooner. i did waste a lot of time when i was younger but its ok. ive changed that now and i will never go back 😊
Excellent advice
Every time i watch your videos , seeing you speaking, i imagine you back in the period of vikings looking pretty much the same & living even similiar in the woods. 😁
Yea, i remember being in the train for over an hour per day then back again over an hour to get to the clinic. I remember seeing all the people on the train who looked robot like & sad and tied & drained , adrenal exhausted and i told
myself years ago " i dont think this is for me to do daily as i dont want to turn into them".
Absolutely!!!! We are no more than battery chickens untill we are exhausted then thrown away.
Thank you for the spot-on commentary, Bjorn. And thank you for the view of the gorgeous winter scenery.
Life is great to balance the screen time with outside life, can listen and see other people’s amazing lives and personalities
