    I never could understand how the prices of some plants got so crazy, Or even how some people can think of a plant as old fashioned. I like plants for how they look and how they grow. Prices here in the US are going down on various plants, it does not make me love them less, makes me able afford them more now. Looking forward to your next video

      Thank youu. Its the law of supply and demand I guess. With the help of social media different plants get spotlights at different times, hence skewing the demand side suddenly. But most plants are wonderful and they will take turns taking this spotlight. If they are out of budget now its worth waiting for prices to stabilize.

    Interesting to see the prices where you are and glad to know some plants are becoming more accessible. I looked up the Phil Tortum and it is still being sold for $100-$275 here in the states online which is more than I would ever pay, but probably much cheaper if you ever are able to come across one in a physical nursery. I notice plants in general are horrendously overpriced online for some reason for tiny plants.

    Asking for a friend here. How are plants usually defined as rare? My personal definition of 'rare' is either the plants are endangered in their native habitats or hybrids with distinctive traits usually on the foliage.

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  2 года назад +3

      I would define rare as supply being exceedingly limited compared to or relative to its demand. Because of this, the prices are usually exuberant. I personally believe endangered plants should be labelled endangered rather than rare. To you know… keep people away from them 😅😅 but we all have different definitions of rare.

    • @sussyyeeter422
      @sussyyeeter422 2 года назад

      @@onlyplants Ah I agree that the meaning of 'rare' would usually lean toward stark imbalance in supply vs demand and not the conservation status. It's like philodendron silver sword vs pink princess. One is rare cos it's threatened and the other is cos it's highly sought after. Thanks, Sean!

    Let's see if you can help me. I have managed to root a knot of monstera adansonii variegata, its first completely white leaf, shortly after fully opening, rolled up on itself, the second completely white leaf, exactly the same, after opening it has rolled up on itself. What could be the cause? I have read about the lack of watering, but I don't think that is the case because it is precisely after watering that the second leaf starts to roll up. Thanks. Greetings

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  2 года назад +2

      This could be due to it not being able to photosynthesis with completely white leaves? Although the next possibility may be overwatering since thats how most people kill theirs. The variegated need very very very little water (but above average humidity)

    I feel like if the plant can be either easily propagated, grown from seed, or tissue cultured it's always going to lower in price over time. It always ends up a rare plant that's super high in demand being overproduced and drops in price once all these mature plants are sitting in greenhouses not selling at their inflated prices. I can see something like Thai Constellations dropping well under 100 dollars in the next 5-6 years because they're actually tissue cultured instead of being a variegated chimera (like Monstera 'Albo') that requires a cutting from a mother plant using a variegated node. Same way I can see Monstera obliqua being a lot cheaper in the future as it can be propagated. Cebu blue pothos also dropped a lot in price, I got a pretty full plant in a 4" pot for $25 CAD when they were in the $75-100 range before. I can see them dropping as low as 10 dollars pretty soon as they're super easy to grow and propagate.

Now, I'm afraid to invest in expensive plants. Now, I'm scrambling to propagate my expensive bought plants but the problem is it is very cold now in our area that propagation may take four months instead of one month during hot season. My begonia rex are even dying and some of my plants are going dormant.
