All you need to know about watering houseplants

  • In this video I explain why plants need water, why they cannot survive overwatering, and also why we should never ever ever water on a scheldule. I share with you 10 factors/variables that determine how often you should water your plants, how to read visual signs/clues, and different ways you can water them. The video is long, as are all my other videos, but they provide tons of insight and tips to help you grow your houseplants with more success.
The 10 factors/variables that determine watering frequency are:
    1. The plant species
    2. Indoors VS outdoors
    3. Soil media
    4. Pot type
    5. Pot size
    6. Plant age/size
    7. Light intensity
    8. Temperature/humidity
    9. Type of water
    10. Growing season/dormancy
    Tools to measure moisture:
    1. Moisture meter
    2. Your finger
    3. Pot weight
    4. Look for visual cues
    5. Touch the leaves
    6. Experience
    How to water plants:
    1. Pour water onto topsoil
    2. Bottom watering
    3. Misting/spraying/hosing down
    Extra top:
    1. Water in the morning
    2. Should you have plants living in less than ideal lighting condition, bring them to a bright and airy area on watering day to let them freshen up.
Revisions: The process in which plants shed excess water by droplets is called guttation, not transpiration.

This is a great video, Sean. What people are dying for is someone who is serious but has a good sense of humor (love those unspoken quips on screen) and is personable. That's you! Congratulations on your increasing subscribers. I see you comment on almost every single comment that is made. Get ready for a full time job doing just that. Of course, it is kind of you and everyone really appreciates knowing that you have actually read the comment. I laugh at each video because of the difference in our growing zones especially regarding humidity. Today it is will be a high of 38C, humidity is higher than usual as this is the "monsoon" (LOL!!) so it is 40%. Normally, we have 10-15% humidity and live in AC 6 months a year. UGH!. Ordinarily, I try to grow plants that are less dependent onl;ambient humidity but now I've bought some that might require a humidifier. That's your fault!!! Looking forward to more excellent videos from you. Watch out Summer Rayne Oakes! LOL!

First time that the difference between browning from overwatering and underwatering was explained in a such a clear way. Thanks also for the tip about leaving a plant in a brighter area after watering. My calatheas’ leaves furl even with a soft 7am light (in Switzerland) so I had to move them to a darker corner, but now I know that I should taken them to a brighter area on
their watering day. Thank you so much for all these precious pieces of advice.

I'm 71 years old and I've never felt the need to buy a moisture probe. I've always just used my finger or judge by the weight of the pot whether there was a lot of water in it or not. I always worried about if I had a moisture meter and I tried to test the moisture and a plant like a spider plant that has thick roots that I would damage the root system by sticking up probe down in once a week I guess it would be fine for plants with fine Roots like Ferns and things like that but pothos and philodendron have kind of thick Roots also and I just think it does a lot of damage to the roots especially if you're doing it all the time like I've seen some people on RUclips that are beginning plant people. But you are right if you're new to plants and you're not sure about watering it would probably be a good thing to have but just be careful what plants you keep sticking that into like your canna lily if you stick it in through the rhizome the thick rhizome bulb like part of it or a caladium that has bulbs that's not such a good idea unless you put it between those thick rhizomes or bulbs. I know that's common sense but a lot of people don't have common sense anymore it seems like

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  4 года назад +1

Thank youu. I think moisture meters are great for beginners to learn about soil moisture. I’ve stopped using moisture meters for a while now because they will disturb the roots.

love your explanation. easy to understand as always. Im slowly replacing my plastic pots to teracotta pots. it is easier to water it. plus i love how the pots is moist whenever i overwater. my plants love it. i am learning not to be dependent to my moist meter. i hate the holes when it poke the soil. the only small problem is its is a bit hard to repot when it is rootbound to the pot. i simply smashed the pot and smashed it further into pieces. i mixed it into my soil mix. nice to reuse it and it is good for relieving stress😅

I feel the best water to use to for your plants ,especially your potted ones is Water from your fish tank or tank filter washing( collect the poop water) ,fish pond ,water lily pond (with fishes) . This s because the waters
contain much nitrates from fish poop.Nitrates are plant fertilisers, organic and naturally dissolved for easy plant intake.Pity just do not have enough to water the whole garden
i just came across your videos and must say they are excellent and wonderful.Keep it up!

Hello again Sean! I like that on your channel you go in depth in information when it IS needed. I never knew all these aspects of watering my plants!! I see changes I need to make now. So many skip over the details because it might not be exciting but it is a part of the plants life cycle!! thanks for opening my eyes and I have fallen in love with my plants all over now,,

Very good and detailed! With cacti and succulents you want to water once or twice a month and every other watering with fertilizer made for cacti and succulents. Also don't water them in your winter months as they go dormant then! Also well draining soil for them too. You have some lovely plants have a good day!

Hello friend. You touched on some key factors. When asking others for plant advice not everyone uses same methods and/or types of soil. Environment also plays a big role (tropical vs cold climates). By the way, I collect succulents. Wishing many blessings with your channel. Great video. 🌵

finally a good video from Indonesia. I'm happy now that i can get insights from someone living in the same city & climate as me lol.
Btw, i'm a bit curious as to why our local shops/farmers sometimes has very different approach to watering & media. Like for rubber plants, people here tend to use the red soil (that clay-like one) and recommend to water them daily, as opposed to people here in youtube recommending to use more airy soil mix & watering only when the soil is dry. The youtuber recommendations seems more logical to me, but the local shops/farmers must be giving that advice because it works for them. What do you think about this contrasting difference?

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  4 года назад +1

I believe the clay type soil is inexpensive/probably even free of charge if they take it from the mountains. So price is number 1 factor. Secondly they grow their plants outdoors, where evaporation rate and air circulation is high, therefore the plants can live in this soil.

Did a great job on talking about watering. I do get my idoor and seeds watered but i sleep late so between 10am and noon i water things like my outdoor container of tomato or my small succs. I have weird continers like 3 plastic bikes with side car i got filled with candy 1 easter i found a half died kalachoe at lowes stuck the 3 hopeful stems 1 in each and they have doubled in size this spring.. you see on my budget you use and pail or butter tub or plastic jar. I use pop bottles and to go side cups with covers. I may not have beautifful pots but they do get noticed. I also re--use nursery pots and if a plant comes with a cover pot or terra cotta all the better. Dollor store hanging pots work great for my dangling plants.

! I have been buying water in 2 and 1/2 gallon plastic containers that have a spigot on it. So you can put it in the fridge or on the counter top and have access to the water without having to pour it. They're huge plastic containers and I'm thinking while they take up a lot of room in the trash and I bought some tomato plants I couldn't get in the ground. So I cut the top off of these plastic containers put potting soil and it have pot soil half peat moss osmocote and some soil moist crystals that absorb 50 times their weight in water. I open the spicket up so the water can drain out and put a tomato plant in each one. Since they're above ground The Roots get very warm quickly versus the cold ground. I'm anxious to see how my recycled water containers are doing they hold about the same amount of soil as water I guess two and a half quarts or gallons I mean
