The song is irony. He IS in love, but in denial. He's trying to convince himself more than her. He keeps her picture in the wall but makes an excuse for it. He won't give it back. Big boys don't cry. Big boys don't cry. Not a booty call, he's trying not to give in to his feelings
😀😃😁😆🤣 I like your analysis, you're cute
you have hit the nail on the head, loved this song back in the day. And the last thing he is being is honest!
NATHAN HENDRICKS lol it's the subtle nuance of feeling that corporate heads have programmed out of us. No wonder we are so divided over bs
Exactly. “Big boys don’t cry” give it away.
No, I think you are misinterpreting it a bit. He is having doubts about things, or trying to make his mind up, because of unsettled things between them......
...so there you go...
He is totally and completely gone. Hook, line and sinker. He just can't handle it.
Why in the world would you say that...;-)
He could easily just be unsettled about things, and actually not in that much love. I.e. because of some actions of the woman.....
@@atligunnar7101 Just my opinion based on the musical tone and lyrics. To paraphrase Shakespeare, "Me thinks he doth protest too much."
Ok you totally missed it. He is completely in love. How in the heaven above could this get by you?
@@erykaton170 ,
Actually the musical tone conveys you to a place were he is informing her, about the unfortunate thing that he is no longer in love with her, by some "mishap", and she doesnt get it. Its actually that she is interpreting his words in a way totally out of context...
This view that he is just in love, is way to simplistic to be interesting...
@@midnightwind8067 ,
Ah, not interesting.... ;-)
As Shakespeare said. he "doth protest too much".
exactly!!!
It was actually Queen Gertrude (Hamlet's mother) who said "the lady doth protest too much, methinks".
If you're using quotes, get em right, eh?
@@jamespasifull3424 It is a quote from Shakespeare, as he wrote it.
@@ashyclaret
So, he WROTE it, he didn't SAY it! 🤣
@@jamespasifull3424 Did Queen Gertrude say it before Shakespeare wrote it? No ,because she was a fictional character.
Eric Stewart (the singer) wrote this "Tongue in Cheek" song in response to his wife's constantly telling him that he didn't tell her that he loved her enough times.....In reality, he loved her very much. The band searched high and low looking for the perfect voice to say the words "Big Boys Don't Cry" when their secretary/telephonist/tea maker etc. popped her head around the door while they were recording this, to tell them that they'd got a phone call and they all instantly knew that her voice was the exact voice that they were looking for.
I remember all that! I was a massive fan. I visited the second Strawberry Studios, (in Surrey,) with a friend and we saw Eric Stewart park his black Ferrari and go into the studio. 😀
@@carolynjanesutton4932 I'm jealous!!
Oh, wow. All the while I thought it was a young boy saying that. Thank you for that info.
Thank you for saving me the time to write the meaning down. You are 100% right. He wrote it tongue in cheek for his wife. ☺️ ♥️
Geez why do women torture us with this nonsense of " You don't tell me you love me enough times!" It's totally ridiculous!
This was a huge hit in the summer of 75. That awesome sound was done by making tape loops of each of the band's voices and playing them like an instrument. "big boys don't cry" the voice was a secretary in the studio at the time. Other 10cc must listen songs: Dreadlock Holiday, I'm Mandy Fly Me, Wall Street Shuffle, and Rubber Bullets.
Yes Dreadlock Holiday is so good 🎶🎧
The Things we do for love.
Ace - "How Long" Same summer
Rubber Bullets: Crazy to think that decades on this song should seem so relevant
Thats right. Big boys dont cry was spoken by the receptionist at Strawberry Studios in Stockport nr Manchester. The place is a museum now and well worth a visit.
He is in love. He is just in denial.
I agree he trying to convince himself.
I agree. He knows he's in love. Great song 🎵
He in love he's just in denial
😂 Definitely in Love 😍
Remember, Denial aint just a river in Africa !
No, he's NOT being honest, he's lying to HIMSELF and his girlfriend. Listen to how sad he is, the lame excuses he's making. He's in denial, he truly is in love. You didn't have the background lyrics from the middle eight, they're saying, "Big boys don't cry."
This is a great song by a very talented and highly underrated band.
Not on my CD player they're not....
I always thought of this as someone who IS in love, maybe for the first time, but they don't know how to handle it emotionally.
That’s always been my take on it too.
I have seen it as the man is actully realizing he is not in love for some reason, and is torn about it....., at least that is the vibe...
Me too - exactly. It's a beautiful song / melody that describes that exact feeling.
Irony India!!!! He's totally in love!
Irony is occasionally tricky for Americans apparently......
Yep, too literal an intepretation. He is SO IN LOVE!!!
Like everyone has said,
You missed this one.
She’s no booty call!
He’s hooked.
He knows it.
She knows it.
He KNOWS she knows it.
But SHE’S not feeling it
Yet
So “be quiet. Big boys don’t cry”
@@carolynjanesutton4932 Lol... No Ma'am. I pretty much picked up on the meaning, immediately.
I'm not certain that it classifies as "irony", though... unless, one considers that the lyrics were written in response to a comment from the writers wife (she was complaining that he didn't say "I love you", enough).
Like other comments...he's totally trying to convince himself that he's not in love. He's in love!
For many years it was voted the greatest song in history in the U.K.
Definitely in love. Trying to play it cool.
Eric Stewart the singer, wrote it because his wife said you never say you love me as much as you used to, he thought by saying I love you all the time would diminish the meaning. So that's why he came up with I'm not in love.
He doth protest too much. He's totally in love.
Ten C C are, arguably, the most underrated British Band ever.
Even this song produced a studio produced "Choir" of a thousand voices/
ALL their many songs are different from each other.
The Band split into 2 x 2 Members and if you want a VISUAL and musical treat please put in "Cry" by 2 of these guys: Godley and Creme....:)
Maybe add XTC who are quite brilliant. Forget Making Plans for Nigel, its way more than that!
A great song.
He's trying to convince himself he isn't in love but he is.
The PROBLEM is that he's in love. Haha.
No, he isn't. When a man tells you this, BELIEVE him!
Big boys don't cry, his mother never let him show emotion so as adult he doesn't know how to deal with the feelings because it scares him. Loved this song! 💞✌
Production note: That "synthesizer" sound is actually the sampled voices of all four members spread over 48 tracks the final mix had to be rehearsed heavily before they got to the mix that waas released. There's a great video around telling that whole story that's worth checking out. This song is actually more a marvel of recording engineering than Bohemian Rhapsody, and may have taken twice as long to complete.
One of my favorite songs to play on my guitar! Loved it since I was 7 in 1975!
Get into 10cc, one of the best bands around in the 70's!
Full of mega-talented, multi-instrumentalists.
All great singers, musicians, & writers.
I AM in love..........with 10cc, & have been since around 1975!
He doesn't want to admit that he's in love. :-)
No, he's definitely in love. He's just trying to be macho. That's the joke.
You don't keep a picture of a booty call up on the wall.
Sure you do he's hiding a stain
Yep.
What a power house of a song. Only 10CC, could deliver such a beautiful epic master piece. Still one epic classic for the music world!!!!
10cc was one of the best bands of the time. My teenage years, and into my 20's living in Scotland. This one track was one full of teenage angst, being totally in love, and trying to not show it, or feel it. All the boys and girls felt it the same way... Damn. The number of times I was in love then, and trying not to be! Total teenage confusion. Thanks for a great reaction.
One has had to have stood posed on the rampart as you watched that bastard Love destroying the wall. Men and women are fools that try to fool themselves.
Great song.
This song is about self denial. Denying he is in love, when he is. It's a beautiful song.
He is so in love with the person beyond love, Yet does not want to admit it or be rejected.
He's lieing to her! He is in love but just can't admit it!
He is SO totally in love and he just keeps denying it.
The great Eric Stewart on guitar and vocals. of course he's in love.
Try 10cc's "The Things We Do For Love", happier tone
Like walking in the rain and snow when there's nowhere to go and you're feeling like a part of you is dying, I probably haven't remembered it word for word but I do hope India reacts to it. Great song.
Not as innovative or original though.
Peter Wesson it was one of the first songs I learned all the words to, though. I was 11 sitting in a tipped up wheel barrow singing that song to my very first puppy, that was all my very own, because I did not know how else to tell him how much I loved him. I grew up singing it to all 5 of my babies. It is not a song to be discounted. Beautiful.
Sharnell Sykes I hope you were selective with the lyrics you sang to your puppy and your babies from this song :)
Peter Wesson 😂
I love this song!!! Memories of Sunday summers in Australia. This song was huge here.
It was written mostly by Eric Stewart as a riposte to his wife's declaration that he did not tell her often enough that he loved her.
I always thought it was a song to himself yo convince himself
He was so in love with her 😁😂😍 great song
And he's in pain and denial because he realised she doesn't feel the same about him, and moved on with her life leaving him emotionally stranded.
Yep! He’s in love. Fo sho!💛✌️✨
He is in love but he is probably afraid of getting hurt. It was a love song.
He is saying he’s not in love, because he is really in love with her, but is hiding his feelings. Mind games
This song is about being in denial. He is absolutely in love.
This song is a technical masterpiece!
He's head over heels in love (Big boys don't cry, big boys don't cry) but she couldn't care less.
He's playing mindgames for sure, but with himself. He loves her deeply and doesn't want to admit it.
Always felt he was in denial. He so in love it hurts, that's why 'big boys don't cry'. 10CC was my lay on the couch and chill after work music.
I always thought it was a guy who was in love but is protecting his heart, afraid of being hurt x
It sounds more like he is just trying to convince himself that he is not in love. But he has already caught feelings. ✌❤🌹
Anyone who keeps saying they’re “not in love,” is in love!
I always loved the melody of this tune
Dude is head over heels in love and trying to deny it. It tears him apart when they are apart (big boys don't cry).
Thanks to your channel, going back to some albums I haven't listened to in decades.
Classic song. Fantastic reaction.
Apart from not getting the irony, I guess. :)
I had a great smile when I heard it on Guardians of the Galaxy at the movies because it was decades that I never heard it again since I was child! Thanx India. Please react to Eddie Rabbit & Crystal Gayle - You and I! Another beautiful song!! 😗
She has Groot on her wall!
You are really great! You’re reaction to this made my day. Keep ‘em coming, please.
Great song India(such denial)..I love it and love your channel..I am so glad i found it!
This is one of my all-time favorite songs. When I used to listen to this when I was little, the lyrics weren't as important to me as the sound, the music and his voice. All of that yearning even though he was protesting.
My favourite song of all time, still gives me goosebumps, nice reaction India. 10cc have an endless song list for you to react to, and every song of theirs is different. Try Rubber Bullets, The Dean and I, Good Morning Judge, Life Is A Minestrone, I'm Mandy Fly Me..the possibilities are endless..enjoy
This song and “The Things we Do for Love” are tame. Their deep tracks are where it’s at. This was Paul McCartney’s favorite band in the 70’s.
I have to tell you, your reaction had me laughing so hard I had to go outside and laugh it off. You're just beautiful. Thank you for that. Hahahaha
I was a HUGE fan of 10cc back in the 70's, and saw them in concert five or six times. Thinking of their songs, I think you might like the Dean and I or I'm Mandy, Fly Me.
These boys (10cc) were so underrated. For me, they was technically gifted beyond belief
So under rated. Glad you're exploring this band .
💛🙏
the wall of sound from the voices for the whole song makes this vibe...one of my classic faveys!! Thanks India
Critics at the time said they couldn't replicate this live...
So they did.
He is so in love! 🤣
Reminds me of the old George Jones song 'She thinks I still care'.
"Just because asked a friend about her,...just because I spoke her name somewhere, ...just because I dailed her number by mistake today,..she thinks I still care!" ♥️
OMG.. This is a such a beautiful song! It brings back so many memories.. 💔❤️
He is in love, that's why he keeps her picture on the wall.
This has the same kind of denial as "I'm over you" by Keith Whitley!
You keep playing songs I had forgotten how much I loved!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you!!
So love this song, very dreamy and soothing. Thanks for sharing India :)
They do another incredibly beautiful tune called cry under their last names Godly and creme... please give it a listen it's incredible
Also 'An Englishman In New York' and 'A Little Piece Of Heaven'.
Seconded. Great song and an interesting video to go with it.
@@Pulsar77 An Englishman In New York is by Sting.
@@windsorSJ Same title, different song: ruclips.net/video/K2YKhmpBL1c/видео.html
You guys don't understand Manchester humour, he so in love that's what he means but in a typical Manchester irony.
of course most of us understand, she's a little....you know.
LANY 2017 yeah....I do love watching her reactions, but she is usually a million miles wide of the actual meaning of a song. Kinda cute 🙂
@@Retroearthling ...American? Irony doesn't travel across the pond very well.
This is such a timeless song, you should check out a video on how the song was produced to get all those voices together, using the secretary to whisper, be poised and quiet. The beauty is in the production. Keep in mind the song was made around 1975
"Denial" is more than just a river that runs through Egypt !!
He’s trying to convince himself that he hasn’t fallen in love
Always loved this song. Even tho lyrics about a guys denial of his feelings don't seem to go with the etheral, angelic sounding music.
'Another' great reason why i love India's jukebox of music..'discovering' what great music i had missed growing up..What a great tune, whoever brought this song to India's attention i thank you..it's now about to enter my playlist. What a great moody & atmospheric sound this song has..love it.Great Reaction too India.
Love your reactions... nailed it!
Check out their awesome upbeat song Deadlock Holiday!
love this tune it's ironic..please react to Kate Bush The Dreaming
Forget "The Dreaming", I'd like to see India's reaction to Kate Bush singing "The Kick Inside". There's something pretty "unusual" going on in THOSE lyrics.!!!!!!
@@SebDangerfield-yu7cm another great tune by Kate to be honest I don't think there is a Kate tune I don't like
I'm so proud of you for not interrupting the song. It may be the first your viewers have heard it. Afterwards give your comments. Thank you respecting us. You did well 😊
your reactions are priceless India... love them !!
thats the short version. and yes he is in love. trying to downplay so as not to lose the girl.
This came out when I was 9 years old. Reminds me of my childhood. I feel a bit sad when I
listen to it.
This was a huge hit at the time. I was 20 when it hit the charts, and those massive overdubs were so unlike the bands at the time. It was so transfixing. I agree with one of the other posters, he is painfully, deeply, head over heels for her. IMO, he is not directly telling his GF these things. He is replaying those thoughts in his own mind, as a defense mechanism. If, he thinks, something causes them to split, he reasons it won’t hurt so much as he has prepared himself for that, in his mind. It’s partly his insecurity and his true feelings for her that causes his dilemma. I mean, his lover would have to have 0 self esteem and like being treated as a door mat to even consider sticking with him. He could never actually do that, because he took the plunge, and he’s in deep. It’s spelled LOVE. 😍
Loved this song back in the day, 10cc had some great songs
I love this song and the music's amazing. It somewhat always relaxes me listening to it.
If you haven't already, you might check out "Don't Bring me Down" by Electric Light Orchestra (ELO). Another great classic from around when this song *points upwards* came out.
Got to check out “Dreadlock Holiday” and “Good Morning Judge”.
Wall Street shuffle and I'm mandy fly me. And Rubber Bullets. Also by 10cc
wow india this brings back the memories ,what a trip ,,,cool song ,thanks for video india
Written by Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman, Stewart came up with the idea for the song after his wife of eight years asked him why he didn't say "I love you" more often.
Of course he's in love, he just doesn't want to admit it. Real men don't 'do' emotion!. Thank fuck times have changed and it is now OK for young men to recognise emotions, believe me, this is a new thing!
Jonny Lumberjack You can’t say anything has changed after listening to a track that is more honest to a human situation than anything produced recently. Unless you’re drawing a definite distinction between how it is more socially acceptable to sing about a situation than talk about it between friends.
@@behavedave Eh? I'm merely pointing out the differences in the young men of today and the men who were young when I was a young woman. Men are now encouraged to talk about their feelings, it is no longer OK to say things like 'big boys don't cry'. Which is a good thing. I mean, it's not good enough, yet, suicide is still the biggest killer of young men in the Western world, so clearly even more talking is required. But it's moving in the right direction and it has definitely changed for the better in the past few decades.
LOL, complete BS.
I would say rather its the other way around. Being vulnerable and soft, is quite not the same as being connected to your emotions.
...And sureley this song can mean something else than most think...
@@atligunnar7101 who's talking about being vulnerable and soft? Damn, Freud would have a field day with you! Agree or disagree pal, it makes no difference to me :)
LOL, wow, The denial is strong here. You were actually talking about a song, and a person in in it who seems to be soft and vulnerable, and now suddenly nobody is talking about that!!!...lol..
Amazing how a simple pop song, can stir up things...
He is absolutely in love, but he's trying to act to her as if he's just cool with things either way to try not to drive her away.
LOL You are hilarious to watch during this song. I love watching you.
You wouldn't ever have to say one word...your facial expressions say it all...and it's awesome to watch. Kudos.
You took this far too personally, lol. He's actually singing from the point of view of a man who's in denial of how he really feels, out of fear of being hurt. From the lyrics it's patently clear that he's head over heels in love. The song is poking fun at his state of mind. :)
An honest example of male fragility; contrary to the song's title "I'm not in love", he actually IS in love.
One of the best love songs ever written. So delicate and catchy.
When I first heard this song in the 1970s I took it as this: he was very much in love, but he could no longer take the seriousness of it and awknowledge that to her, so he feigned not being in love with her; he was afraid of the indepthness of their relationship and could not deal with it. Fear and denial. Reminds me of my first serious highschool relationship, you know the one where after dating for 2 years she went with someone else to the prom. Fear and denial.
Da Nile ain't just a river in Egypt...
The 70's was the "me" decade. A common thread through many songs of the decade speaks of people never allowing themselves to get too close because sticky romantic attachments were, at least in pop culture, such a bore and this song reflects that. Whether the perspective is that the author is in denial of his love for his partner or is aware of his love, but is afraid to express it for fear of it being unrequited, is left to the listener's interpretation.
It's hard to make out (took me a couple years & help from a musically-inclined friend) but listen to the whispering in the bridge: "Be quiet. Big boys don't cry. Big boys don't cry. Big boys don't cry." That reveals the man's denial and possibly why he's denying his true feeling.
This whole song is the SOUND....I remember when it came out. The overlayed vocals were unbelievable for that time...its still fantastic.
You`re reaction to this video is priceless. So, sweet.
