James was a Captain in the British Army. He served in Kosovo. He was also an Honor Guard at the Queen Mother's funeral.
He is also hilarious if you follow him on twitter, he won an award for best put downs two of my favourites. Some troll put James blunt has an annoying voice to which he replied yes and no mortgage. The other one what ever happened to james blunt he used to be a thing in the UK he posted a picture of him and his wife next to his four sports cars. Like him or hate him the dude has accomplished a hell of a lot in a lifetime officer in the British Army served in combat came home became a best selling artist.

My husband used to sing this to me. Ryan couldn't sing, but it was just so sweet. I miss him so much... He passed away last year. Thank you for the beautiful memory.

During a deep depression I had, I was at a bakery and this young lady gave me the biggest smile I'd ever been given in all the years until then. She kept her eyes on me as she walked slowly past and titled her head back to me as she was leaving the store, all whilst keeping her smile. If it hadn't been for my depression, I wouldn't have just smiled back in my shy way, but would have gone after her. That was about 13 years ago now and I have never forgotten that moment in all this time.
Sorry to hear that, Mine was 18 years ago in the early 2000's and starting Junior college. I'm married now but I still think about them all the time and what could of been. 😔💔

@VeryBarry, you're not creepy. This used to happen frequently before people buried their faces in smart phones. What a sad place the world would be if we can't smile at one another. I smile at anyone who seem like nice people (young or old, men or women).

This is from an interview James had wherein he explains the song:
Blunt said “You’re Beautiful” wasn’t actually a romantic song. “It’s always been portrayed as romantic, but it’s actually a bit creepy,” he opined. “It’s about a guy (me) who’s high and stalking someone else’s girlfriend on the subway. But everyone has those moments where you wonder: ‘What if I’d said something?'”
Nothing creepy about finding a girl attractive and going after her. Women often leave one guy for someone that they think can offer more, so the whole 'she has a boyfriend' thing rings hollow coming from women.
It's a true story actually. He did meet her on the subway. She was her ex girlfriend and she was with her husband. She recognized him and he did too, as the first time they saw each other. So wonderful song!

My understanding is this is a true story about James and a woman he loved. He was obsessed with her, loved her but wasn't stalking her. He met her by chance with another man on a subway.

What a beautiful song! This is the first time I ever heard his voice. His voice is incredible!! Such an emotional ending.
I thank James Blunt every time I hear that song. If you listen close enough you'll hear it's a song about unrequited love. Which is a dangerous feeling that a lot of people my age and younger are forced to endure. So I'm thankful that someone with a talent like his could get the message out to the world on just how painful unrequited love can be. Thank you James Blunt.
First time I saw the video, my thoughts were that it must be ****ing freezing!
Since then, learning more about him, what he's done, and seen just how hilarious he is, got a lot of respect for him.

Just some interesting info re James Blunt.
James Blunt was a captain in the Life Guards, one of the senior regiments of the British Army, and was in Kosovo in 1999 when Russian troops seized control of the Pristina airport.
In an interview with BBC he said:
"I was given the direct command to overpower the 200 or so Russians who were there. I was the lead officer with my troop of men behind us. The soldiers directly behind me were from the Parachute Regiment, so they’re obviously game for the fight. The direct command that came in from Gen Wesley Clark was to overpower them. Various words were used that seemed unusual to us. Words such as ‘destroy’ came down the radio.”
Blunt told the BBC that he was conflicted by the command and that he would have refused the order. However, the singer never actually had to make that choice. He told the BBC that shortly after Clark gave his command, he heard General Sir Mike Jackson come on the radio and shoot down the order:
Blunt said “Fortunately, up on the radio came Gen Mike Jackson, whose exact words at the time were, ‘I’m not going to have my soldiers be responsible for starting World War III’, and told us why don’t we sugar off down the road, you know, encircle the airfield instead.
And after a couple of days the Russians there said: ‘Hang on we have no food and no water. Can we share the airfield with you?’.”
If Gen Jackson had not blocked the order from Gen Clark, who as Nato Supreme Commander Europe was his superior officer, Blunt said he would still have declined to follow it, even at the risk of a court martial.
James left the British Army in 2002 so that he could pursue his musical career.

Some further info is as follows:
In 1999, he served as an armoured reconnaissance officer in the NATO deployment in Kosovo. Initially assigned to reconnaissance of the Macedonia-Yugoslaviaborder, Blunt and his unit worked ahead of the front lines directing forces and targeting Serb positions for the NATO bombing campaign. His unit was given the assignment of securing the Pristina International Airport in advance of the 30,000-strong peacekeeping force; the Russian army had moved in and taken control of the airport before his unit's arrival.
He did have lead position and if you want to say he is lying that is up to you.

Most squaddies, love the guy and speak highly of him and back up this version of events. I have spoken about this with plenty of squaddies. You don't speak for them all.

Honour is still a huge thing in the forces, especially the likes of the British and US forces, without it you are nothing. If he lied about it, he wouldn't be accepted in the British military community afterwards. However, he is accepted, as what you wrote was correct. Windowlicker Supreme is just talking shit frankly.

There would be no reason to lie. He didn't need to boost his ego either and like you mentioned honor is very important in the army and other forces in Britain and the USA even afterwards. I can relate, once (25 years ago) I was walking out of a crowded Hospital lobby in Houston and saw a Woman, obviously from India, with the most perfectly beautiful face I have ever seen, coming in. It was only 10 seconds and I will never forget it.

i liked this girl for 4 years Freshman to Senior, I started singing so she can noticed my voice. she was giving me the eyes i looked at her back n smile she smiled back but the thing is my ENGLISH is broken..... and my head keeps saying she already has a boyfriend move on,i did move on but my HEART says tell her how you feel so i added her in facebook in my junior year. I told her meet me in the library. She was there waiting for me but my body won't move. I told my friend tell her i'm sorry i was doing something. You should listen to 'Monsters' with the video of his father who he wrote this song for as his father was seriously ill and needed a kidney to survive. Also 'The Greatest' with the video showing a tribute to hospital staff all over the world during the pandemic. Both are fantastic.
Its such a connection...I fell in love and borderlined obsession myself..sometimes you can fall for someone that hard over something simple and it can take over you completely. I never did anything creepy granted, didn't stalk, gave space. But I was so in love I couldn't stop thinking about her and couldn't let go when it ended. I was obsessed. But I was in love. And the ending just hits even harder, that your emotions can get so crazy and you can be so lost, it's like being under water. And sometimes without her, you just want to jump..because what else is there but her? I still love her. But we haven't spoken in years and we won't again. I've accepted it and moved on. But it can still be hard not to have a thought on her. Obsession and love are so similar, they walk hand in hand. It's an experience you can only truly understand if you've experienced it before.
It was his ex- girlfriend that he saw a few years after they split up. AND IT IS A TRUE STORY. He saw her on the subway and went home and wrote the song about the ex.
