I found Submarine in highschool, it's a movie that really touched me in a way i could never understand. The bleak depression of awkward adolescence is something that is unique and captured perfectly in this film.
10:34, I just want to point out that in the book Oliver actually follows through with poisoning Jordana’s dog even though it later dies by being ran over. Oliver is so much worse in the book, they toned him down a lot for the film.
Please do more of these kinds of videos. I love it when RUclipsrs talk about movie most people might not even hear of like your video of Tear Across the Dotted Line.
I find out this movie because of the soundtrack by Alex Turner (I'm an Arctic Monkeys fan). I can agree the soundtrack is absolutely phenomenal. The music gives off a sense of melancholic nostalgia, fitting for the themes of the film.
I first watched Submarine when I was around 14 or 15 and honestly it hit me so deep and I really felt understood during that time of my life. I’m also a huge fan of Alex Turner and the music was perfect. Everything about it is just so perfect for what it is
@@superpig2067 I need to watch it to form my own opinion but I wouldn’t call what I’ve seen terrible. And at least Jeff Kinney is passionate and these movies are faithful to the books.
Wimpy Kid is without a doubt one of my favorite series of all time. I remember in Elementary school here in the states, I picked up Ugly Truth in the school library and I fell in love the style. From there I was begging my parents to get me the books. Then on that fateful christmas day back in 2012 I got every single book (1-7 and the Do it yourself book) and got the second movie on DVD. I was able to get every single book in the series so far since then. I am grateful I grew up with this series, they were always so entertaining with its plots and characters. And tho, I am little more critical with the movies since my childhood, I will say that they are incredibly nostalgic. Tho the new movies have failed to live up to the og trilogy, I still always have it as a part of me. I will say tho that The Long Haul is one of the worst movies I have ever seen, the tone is really irritating. And the animated ones, not being terrible, are just lifeless, Nickelodeon esque cash grabs with no real soul. My question is how come that test footage shown in 2020 was so good but the actual final product looks so stiff. I have legit seen garry's mod animations on youtube that look more high quality than the animated series on plus.
a lot of things about the long haul are dreadful don't get me wrong but the new greg gives a performance of a LIFETIME and the psycho shower scene homage is absolute film genius
I work at a movie theater in the city, and we had a screening of the new diary of a wimpy kid movie with Jeff coming as well. Safe to say that he still has steam left in the tank for more books, but not enough when it comes to the movies.
Great video as someone who has such low esteem that they think every action they do is some narcissistic manipulative 4d chess move to be as selfish as possible without seeming like it i love these types of characters
This genre was definitely overdone, but the good ones were so damn good. The Way, Way Back is probably my favorite. It's got a few cheesy only-in-a-movie moments, but it's so earnest. You also get Steve Carrell playing against type as a serious piece of garbage. Edge of Seventeen, and Hailee Steinfeld's performance in it, is also really great and pretty similar to Submarine in terms of the main character's arc.
I’d have loved to have seen a cabin fever live action movie with the original cast with some ugly truth elements thrown in there. I’d have totally been on board with that decision.
This movie had been on my radar for a while. A huge Arctic Monkeys/ Last Shadow Puppets fan, Alex Turner's soundtrack has always meant lots to me. When I finally turned 15, I finally checked out the film, the same age as Oliver... I love romance, the idea of being on an ethereal plane of existence... Im the kind of person whom pictures their life as a film, loves to read, and would totally give those books to my lovers! Also suffering with suicidal ideation - Honestly, this whole film just felt like a big ol' call out, I felt like Oliver and I were 80% the same person... Anyways, amazing someone mentioned this film!
Honestly, Mark, you should make more videos about stuff you just like. Id love to see more stuff like this, it reminds me of that Curious George video you made ages ago.
If you still want to see more coming of age movies Mark. There exist Napoleon Dynamite, Rushmore, The Graduate, and the filmography of John Hughes which defined this genre of teenage flicks.
Coming of Age films are one of my favourite types of film, I love to see how each film tackles growth and change. One of my favourites is the film Sing Street, it's an Irish film about a boy (Connor) with a poor family life trying to impress this girl (Raphina) by starting a band and discovering who he is and what's important to him throughout it. There are some truly powerful scenes in the film with Connor and his brother and Connor and Raphina with a soundtrack I personally love made with mostly original songs. I think if you enjoy coming of age films, Sing Street is something you should check out :)
The trope is dope in any form like Figure 17 an anime where a little girl slowly comes out of her shell with the help of a far more confident clone born by a scifi action B plot cause reasons
Thank you LS Mark. For showing me both Tear Along The Dotted Line, and this. These two pieces of media are some of the most oddly relatable things I’ve ever watched, yet never knew existed, and I gotta give kudos to you for sharing these fine pieces of media to us, the viewers. This is the content I like to see, content that exposes the viewer to new and different things they’ve never experienced. It’s honestly just amazing.
This film almost reminds me of FLCL (the first series) in a way. Except without all the wacky robot shenanigans. Its a similar look at a coming of age story and how people react to their world changing around them. Maybe in a slightly less passive way though but still the same general vibes are there. Plus it also has a great soundtrack too.
It's funny you mention this film as Submarine was literally a film I was studying for media studies last year, comparing it to Clueless. We were comparing the way these films pulled off the rom-com genre.
Richard Ayoade definitely knows how to write awkward, unlikeable characters who are nonetheless captivating. For all ten of you who haven't seen it, watch Garth Marenghi's Darkplace. Garth and Dean Lerner are like the worst outcome for someone like Oliver, where they've clearly never had that crucial moment of realisation at the right age, have stayed emotionally stunted well into adulthood and, worst of all, have somehow ended up with a platform and power over others. And all of this is just what you gleam from the little you see of them outside of their in-universe "characters". Incredible writing.
While "Submarine" isn't my favorite movie, it's one that I respect a lot for looking at the coming of age film genre differently. It has such a unique tone that I still sometimes think about it every couple of years.
This sounds like a better film than the one where a kid goes viral with a silly impact font meme and the family adopts a pig and it ends with a boat crashing into a swimming pool
Id never expect to see LS mark, diary of a wimpy kid, and Alex Turner all in the same thumbnail Edit: I forgot Submarine was a movie! I discovered it because some the soundtrack's songs are by Alex Turner
Verrrry clever Mark, disguising this as a diary of a wimpy kid video, and then, when we least expect it...BOOM, you talk about a niche, not well known movie that is only related to wimpy kid in theme, and, like you said at the end, you just used winpy kid as an excuse to lure us in and talk aboht thisnother movie you love. Fantastic movie. Also as a random half-factoid I'm like 95% sure Ben Stiller had something to do with it getting made in the first place but I honestly don't remember exactly in what way he was involved.
