As messed up as it sounds. My dogs are the reason I’m alive. When I was my most depressed the only thought that kept me around was that no one would be able to explain to them why I left and didn’t come back.

I don’t think it’s messed up @daizrai. I think the majority of dog owners feel this way. I tell people all the time if it wasn’t for my dog I don’t know how I would have made it through as intact as i did. Dogs show us how to love and how to embrace every single day you get with joy and serenity.
The pain we feel when they die is the tribute we owe them for their pure devotion,

@@lindsay6518 100% accurate I should have said pet owners. Cats are on some level their caretakers spirit animal. I used to talk to my Russian Blue as if he were a person and he’d “answer” as a human might. On the odd day when I’d get home very late from work he was always at the door meowing in a very particular tone which sounded like “where the hell have you been ! Don’t you know I worry?” Dogs and cats, with us through the millennia for good reason

I got my cat during the worst depression of my life when I felt incredibly alone. She has taught me that I am capable of loving and caring for someone in a way i was never able to do for myself. This little peanut is my best friend. She is now elderly, diabetic, and arthritic, so I worry about her mortality every day. But the scariest days are far outweighed by the years of quality companionship. The bond we have will be part of me forecer.

7:27 I foster cats, and letting them go can be quite hard, and this mentality that Alison mentions is so helpful. You really just have to emphasize the belief that you're giving them a good life for the short time that you have them, and that all of the trust and patience you're giving this little guy is the most important thing.
Also I related so deeply to this episode. I've learned that life is significantly less livable without forming profound connections with animals

My girl, who we adopted when her first owner died suddenly when she was still a puppy, left me last September. She was 11 1/2 yo. It was so hard at the beginning, not seeing and greeting her first thing in the morning. Or whenever there's thunder, my body would just automatically move and look for her to let her hide in my room because she was scared... Then the pain became manageable, but I would still tear up whenever I remember her, and I think I will be like this forever.

I never thought a dog would be as good for my mental health as my dog is. I grew up absolutely terrified of dogs. I had a panic disorder and dogs were the number one trigger of my panic attacks. I couldn’t even be in a room with a dog until I was like 15, but I worked really hard to overcome my fear because I didn’t want to live that on edge for the rest of my life. But I still never though I’d get a dog until I started hanging out with my friends old dog and realized how comforting she was, and after a mental breakdown, I decided to adopt a senior dog bc I have chronic pain and fatigue and an old, less energetic dog is more my speed. My dog is the first experience I’ve ever had of being loved unconditionally, which has done more for my mental health than any antidepressant I’ve ever taken (still pro drugs tho lol). He’s the only one who is always happy to see me no matter what. 😊 As a kid I couldn’t even imagine seeing a dog and not having a panic attack, so if you had told me I would one day have a dog and love him more than anything, I’d have lost my mind. Adopting a senior dog, you know you get a shorter time with them, but I try to just focus on giving him the best years of his life.
Also shoutout to Allison for being the person who made me realize I could get a dog with my ocd…( he’s actually helped a lot with my contamination ocd.

Allison, that sounds exactly like my harm- and relationship-OCD (R-OCD can apply to pets and any kind of relationship, it doesn't exclusively concern romantic). Having an age they need to hit for you to have been "good" and worrying that something super normal you're doing is animal abuse.

I’ve been lucky enough not to lose any close human family at this time in my life, so losses of pets have been my greatest griefs/traumas of loss. I regularly cry about my (perfectly healthy) cats dying, wondering how I’ll handle the grief. They have gotten me through such tough times, and have kept me accountable to myself. If I disappeared no one could ever love them like I do.
I like to think of it like this: I have infinite love to give animals in my life. I will always grieve the pets I’ve lost, but that doesn’t affect how much love I have to give to other animals.
I’m a huge proponent of animals for mental health. I’ve had dogs, cats, guinea pigs, rats, mice, hamsters, birds, frogs, geckos, snakes, turtles, fish, crabs, shrimp, etc and I love them all. They are the best part of my life. I work at a pet store, and nothing gives me more joy than interacting with animals. Animals > people.

The price you pay at the end of their life is worse than I could’ve ever imagined and I’m a highly anxious person so I’m a pro at imagining bad stuff. I’m honestly traumatized from it. However, pets bring so much joy and so many of them need a home so when I was presented with an opportunity to give a loving home to another cat in need, I took her in and she’s helping me heal ❤

My mom always has two dogs at a time, but they have big age differences so the younger one outlives the older one and then my mom gets another younger dog so now they are the older one. It’s cute but always ends up in a young puppy who wants to play and a grumpy old dog who doesn’t want anything to do with them.

I think the maximum amount of pets anyone should have is 2, because you have 2 hands. So if both of your pets want attention, then you can interact with both pets, at the same time, and nobody feels neglected. But if you have 3 pets and they all want something at the same time then at least one of them will feel neglected, which should make you feel guilty, if you care about your pets.
