    Most of my beds have edging but the areas I edge, I use the clumps of grass I dig up to fill in bare spots in my yard, literally just plug right into the holes and they grow.

    • @dc0145a
      @dc0145a 4 года назад +2

      M Wolfe, I do that as well. Over the years, I've managed to do a whole back lawn area with 'clumps of dug up grass'.

    • @jucjuc314
      @jucjuc314 4 года назад +2

      I do that too! I have planted them once in a box and they filled in perfectly over a few months, than I was able to slice the right size of pieces and put them there, where the grass was missing 😊

    • @ricforero3593
      @ricforero3593 4 года назад +1

      M Wolfe That has usually worked great for me too. Sometimes, unknowingly, I've gotten fooled & transplanted deep green crabgrass into my lawn!

    • @monawolfe
      @monawolfe 4 года назад

      Ric Forero I know what you mean, you have to be careful and know the different types of grasses, which I don’t but I can identify perennial rye & bluegrass so I use those plugs & throw the rest away. I am not a grass expert by any means. That’s why I have holes in my grass in the first place! 😅

    Loved your edging...at 73 years of age and still very passionate about my “yard” I have a couple of tips that keeping a home that was built in 1900 that today fits into the typical “farm house” style was in the day just the most comfortable home in the southern states...high ceilings, big windows and wrap-around porch. A must for me, being that I am a small woman was to find tools that help me do my work and does not poop me out too quickly. Funny thing, the thing I do the most and had never given much thought to is weeds...I have lots of weeds and getting in there among the young seedlings and tender things that come up in the spring is important to deal with as later in the summer, its just almost impossible, as the heat and humidity severely limits the length one can work outside before heat strokes! I find having a kids plastic snow sled is absolutely essential for me...the one for 3 kids...it has a long rope to pull it by and is the perfect thing for having at your side as you pull grass and weeds...the shoulder is saved from upward movements and it can hold 3 times the amount of a bucket or wheel barrow. I keep it in my shed and load all the tools and fertilizer I will be using, pull to my work area and it usually gets piled high in about 3 hours time, then its ready for another round in the afternoon...then l load it up and take all the tools back when l am done. Its great for moving straw bales or bags of mulch, compost, etc. and lastly, if you don’t live in Florida, your grandkids can use if in the snow!
    I should give credit to the one that got me to thinking about the sled...a fella and his wife do a homested thing off the grid and talked about how to get a heavy piece if equipment from the driveway out to where it would be used...he rolled the heavy machine onto a sled and pulled it with his riding mower...works like a charm! 🤠👍 🌺
    Thank you for the great videos! 🤗❤️👍🛷🛷🛷🛷

    Thanks, I'm getting too old for shovels, thank you very much. I have hand edged my beds until last year when I got too ill to do it. This year they look awful! If I can ever get over this mess I've picked up this year, I will see about one of those clipper thingies you used. Once I've edged that will be so much better than the husband's current method which is plastic edging. It pops out and warps all the time. I can't use shovels of any kind because of neuropathy in my feet, so sitting down is always nice too. (Grin) Your demos are always welcome. Stay safe.

      @@TheImpatientGardener yes it is. It’s really surprisingly effective. Takes a few minutes to figure out how to maximize it. It’s great for creating a nice edge and it cuts small roots easily. I’ve tested it to create a new edge but clearly if u have a bed that at some point had an edge it’s great. Still requires getting down and picking up displaced grass or adjusting the mulch but it is far faster than anything else I’ve tried it’s also useful to keep an edge through the year with just a few minutes work.

    Such a crisp, finished look. Good advice and nice to see some tool recommendations. AND nice to see you in short sleeves - guessing you are having some good spring weather. By the way, that bed seems to be at the bottom of a slight slope and benefits from water coming downhill. A hardscape edge would prevent it from getting extra rainwater. Good choice to keep it naturally edged.

    Love your videos Erin! Wondering if you have any suggestions, or can point me to a site, on organic eradication of fire ants. Several years ago, before I planted vegetables, I had the garden sprayed with harsh chemicals that did reduce the numbers of ants significantly. I now garden in Big Bag Beds and raised planters and pots so as not to have direct contact with that soil, but the ants have found their way into my Big Bag Beds. I do not want to have the harsh chemicals sprayed again, if it can be helped. The ants don't seem to harm the garden, but they do harm the gardener and take the enjoyment out of living in that space.

    What happens when you hit a rock with that gas powered edger?

      It makes a pretty horrific noise (metal on stone) and that's about it. There is a guard on the back so if anything were kicked up it would land there, rather than on you, but it is something that I'd recommend pants and, of course, closed toed shoes with just because soil does go flying about a bit, much like when you use a string trimmer.

    You ask for video suggestions, so here is one. I realize yours' is a gardening channel, but I would love a quick aside on your beautiful Newfies. I grew up with St. Bernards, which is another unconventional breed choice. I'd love to know what got you into the breed, why two, where you got them, their individual temperaments, how you keep them cool in the summer and anything else you'd love to fill us in on!

    Edging does finish things off so nicely! I am wondering about your stacked stone edging. You asked for future ideas. So, I'm submitting one for instruction on how to do that on a slope, and get it level.

    Thank you for using your hands to show the angle of the edging! I finally see what I should aim for!

    Totally agree, love getting my garden edging done, and yes my beds have grown in size. The next thing is to educate my hubby to mow the grass edges away from the flower beds. Thanks for sharing 👍❤️😊

    Great video Erin! I need to get out there and edge my garden bed too. Initially I was a bit overwhelmed since I've never done it but your video and tips definitely inspired me.

    Last year was the first time I’d heard about leaving an air space between lawn and mulch to root prune the grass to keep it out of the bed. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Game changer! I’ve been using a half-moon edger for about 15 years and love it. Turf stacking sounds interesting.

      That does seem like a great idea, especially with the type of grass we have. It is relentless at infiltrating everything that is "not grass!"

    This is a very helpful video. I’ve been edging wrong this whole time. Btw, I only live like 45 minutes up north from you. So wonderful to see a local gardener on youtube. Keep making these awesome videos.
