For a comparison, i think the ducati scrambler 1100 PRO...hear me out. Similar displacement, similar torquey V engine, close in price, and sort of off dirt capable but not really (if you dont get the desert sled).
The XSR900 is the most fun i have ever had on a bike. I'm no expert and i have only ridden 6 bikes, but that XSR900 is just so much fun! I'm saving up for one!
@armandoramirez875 yup. Mine had the stock exhaust and it sounded so much like a scooter, and with the throttle by wire, there wasn't much feedback in the throttle, so it felt like a scooter🤣only way I can describe it
i dunno i would think americans would be paid better than japanese or whatever other countries yamaha manufactures their bikes from and that probably helps people live better

If you do the upgrade to the xsr(suspension, brembo brakes) you'll be fairly close to the price of the ftr 🤷♂️but at least the ftr you got the nice rumble of a vtwin and no need to upgrade anything out of the box
I picked up a base model FTR almost 2yrs ago for $9400 out the door with 32mi on the odometer. I’ve owned 23 motorcycles and have ridden well over 300 in My life, from dirt bikes to super sport/sport standard to big cruisers, and the FTR has been My absolute favorite. Like you mentioned, it’s the odd quirkiness of the handling, and the brute force of that low/midrange torque that just thrills and causes big grins. It’s just so damn much fun.

I've had a FTR 1200 S (Race Replica) for 2 years now. Best upgrades were going to Continental Road Attack 3's (love the look of the Dunlop DT3-Rs, but they suck for handling), and putting an aftermarket tune on it to match the de-cat mod. I went with the Fuel Moto tune, but based on what I've read in the owners forums, the Lloyds Motorworks tune option is ever so slightly better.
The FTR is a "move the soul" type of bike. Yes, there are faster bikes, yeah there are better handling bikes, there aren't many bikes that have the premium finish of the FTR, but they are out there. The FTR is for the person who's soul is moved by the combination of things it does very well. You either get it, or you don't. If I was gonna compare it to any bike out there that has that same feel, it would be the Triumph Scrambler 1200, the Ducati desert sled, or the KTM SMCR.
I failed the course in college where they taught us how to evaluated intangibles, but I do know how to count. I wouldn't even get the XSR-900. I'd get the MT-09, except frankly it's too much bike for me. I have another weakness when it comes to impulse control.

Well change the dang tires on the thing to the sport tour batlax that everyone says is so great on the early ftrs. Give a thing away with better tires on it. It'll give the new owner safety margin. Plus you'll get too test it and definitively say if that's the way to go. Open up its secret squid side.
Want the best pounds to HP ratio- XSR (3.8lbs per 1HP to the FTR's 4.22lbs per 1HP) Want the best pounds per Tqs ratio- FTR (6.19lbs per 1Tq to the XSR's 6.6lbs per 1Tq) Just pick the bike you like to look at most. It's really that close after all.
It does. You cannot accuse the 2022 version as having poor handling. With decent rubber on the wheels, it grips well and drops into corners. Spirited riding is perfectly achievable. As for the weight, you just don't feel it. It's like a toy to ride.

Seems like it may compare to a Ducati scrambler 1100... the Ducati has less power but is still proper quick with an exhaust and a tune since it's much lighter. Similar vibes between the two bikes as well.
Would not only love to see the triumph speed twin compared to it but would love to see you guys look at that bike in some way. I know the hipster triumph offerings are vast and confusing but the speed twin seems right up the Papa Yams's alley.
If I remember correctly Yammie slammed DanDan the firemans FTR when he rode it. Now hes really likes it. I like my FTR but its not perfect. But I got a hell of a deal on it.

The FTR and Sportster S are likely to be on the short list for prospective buyers of American bikes who aren't looking for the traditional cruiser. These two bikes have a similar look from the outside, similar power and drivetrain, and price. Maybe the differences come to the front as they are compared. There are plenty of similarities and differences between the two. Compare 'em!!!
@@mikebruce17 I think the Sportster S has more in common with the Indian Scout Bobber than the FTR, from the fat tires to the mid controls to the slammed suspension and low slung tank. Ride height and ergos are so different between the FTR and the S that it's like comparing an MT-09 to an ADV. The hypothetical buyer you're describing only has like three choices that meet your criteria, and if they're looking at the FTR I think they'd be more likely to look at naked bikes next than a performance cruiser

It seems like most of the problems with the FTR come down to the rubber. Would you guys consider swapping out the tyres for somthing sportier and doing another review ? Love the content 👍
The FTR Compares great against the following Bikes: CB1000R - Ducati Monster 1200 - XSR900 - Thruxton. I ended up picking the CB1000R and the Honda naked just did it right, and nobody knows what it is.
There's a joker in the deck. The Speed Triple RS 1050. A bit more than the XSR and a bit less than the FTR. Comes with all the goodies. Looks great, sounds great, impeccable build quality, really good power and torque, all in a single sided swing arm package.
If I have the money and I can just pick the one I want, I’m taking the Indian 🤷🏻♂️. It just looks amazing! Of course the new model is going to be an even better street scorcher than the original version. Either way, I would get the Indian IF I could pick the one I want. In the real world I’m getting the Yamaha.

Compare it to a Ducati Hypermotard…. Maybe. Hp is close. “Torges” close. Both V-twins. Both will slide the rear wheel around with ease. Price point is very similar depending on trim. SVE is like 14kish. Then there is the base and then the SP. Displacement, weight, and wheel size are the big differences. Unless you grab the new FTR. Then you can eliminate wheel size difference. 🍻
Great job one this one. For me there really is no comparing these 2 bikes at all. For me like cars or whatever the Yamaha would be a bike you’d buy with your head and Indian would be one you buy with your heart. Japanese bikes you buy for the reliability and price where the Indian yeah is about character. For me both would be fun which is the biggest factor of all and if you don’t find that fun factor it’s a bad choice either way.
I'm a bit late, but I think I've figured out a good bike to compare to the FTR. The BMW r1250r is kind of similar. It is very unique, as it is designed like a sport naked, but it uses an air-cooled boxer engine. So both of these bikes are basically performance machines with the heart of a cruiser.
I'd like to see that too, I'm torn on what torquey bike I want to move up to from my XSR700. MT09SP and the new Ftr1200 look good but the MT is cheaper.
You need to compare the 2022 FTR against the 2021 FTR. There is a big difference in feel due to the different wheel and tire selection. Also they updated the throttle control on the 2022 model.
First of all...nice vid! I drove a FTR last year and it was really a fun bike ,...then I drove a MT09 ...design wise not my cup of tea...but man....the triple makes me smile all day long! I would rather stick to the triple...next week I think I will get a XSR 900 Abarth. What I think is also a point to go against the FTR is the price...as mentioned in the vid...12000 € here in EU i think it is worth it, but not 15 K in the entry level / black edition with a sporty exhaust. On top the bike I drove was quit new but had already rusted screws....hmmm not at this price point....as I said the FTR is really a lot of fun but the triple is just something! The answer to this video is my bike the Triumph Speed Twin. It is closest to the fun factor of the XSR with the fit and finish of the FTR. I considered both of those bikes and also the Triumph scrambler XC. The Speedy is light torquey and handles great. Top end is disappointing but i'm not running from the popos!
Love my 2020 XSR. They make a great base to modify to your taste. They deserve a high quality suspension setup (Nitron stuff in mine). Some cosmetic upgrades and they are a brilliant and fast bike that can reflect your personality. They look a tonne better than the ugly as sin MT09
Triumph Scrambler 1200 XE! More of a cruiser style bike like the FTR rather than a naked sport bike. Similar price range, also has top notch electronics (TC, IMU, etc).
I now own a 2018 yamaha xsr900. Previously coming from a 2014 triumph thruxton 900. I like the Yamaha but it feels completely soulless and bland to ride (mine is completely stock), im hoping an exhaust will completely change that.
I like the XSR a lot more than the MT09. The MT series looks way too transformer mutant for my taste. The FZ09 was classy too, but I don't know if they make those anymore.
Remember the HD XR1200X ? If only that bike wasnt build 15 years ago, but in 2021 with that new Sportster S engine in it and the modern screen and ride modes. THAT would be a bike to compare the FTR with.
It’s a good point that if not for track, racing, bikes with character make great road bikes, it’s the foibles or unusual aspects that give them character, like my Rocket 🚀 3R 😎
Wouldn't mind seeing them compare the cb1000r compared to the ftr. They make power completely different. However, the styling language is pulling from similar ingredients. The costs are very close to each other. Would interesting to see how different they are

Compare it against the Aprilia Caponord 1200. Same torque numbers, same HP. Strip the panniers and take them both to the track and hit the twisties. (and DON'T leave the Cap ADD set to "Auto"'.)
I've owned a few bikes including an R1. My MT09 is a ton of fun. I'm not a speed junkie but I'm definitely a hooligan. Wheelies & rolling burnouts all day. MT09 is a perfect companion for having fun & not being too serious.
I sold mine after two years. Full exhaust, tuned, full suspension and all. I guess it wasn't my thing. It is a special bike. I recently got a gsxs1000 and have been enjoying it more even though it is/was stock. Just put new headers and getting it tuned. Bikers will always fine a reason to switch. I don't miss my mt09 2018 but have plenty of respect for it agter 10,000 miles.
I know it's an old thread, but I own a 2007 Electra Glide, chipped, cammed, dyno'd at 115hp, and I'm wanting to add another motorcycle, and I'm currently trying to decide between the FTR - R carbon, and the BMW S1000XR.
My FTR doesn’t have traction control or rider modes lol. Try sticking some Pirelli Rally STR tires on the FTR, it’s pretty tame around the corners with them. The Dunlop tires are a little Squeamish. There are not a lot of brands that make street tires for the 2019-2021 wheel sizes.
Supposedly you can retrofit it and any other base models with those abilities. At least that's what I was told at the dealership. The guy said the only thing the base models lack is the display and you can order it separately but it's a bit pricey. Everything else they need for those features is already there.
A bike with good torque is so amazing, mine is 87 lb-ft and even to overtake a vehicle you dont need to go down the gears, you stay in the same gear and just twist the throttle and it goes..
My pick would be a head to head with A Triumph Scrambler 1200.. Best new flat trackers out there, and very comparable imho, in all aspects.. Good vid, cheers!
I'd love for Triumph to make a lower displacement, lighter Scrambler. Something in the 400 cc to 600 cc range. A bike that's flickable and engaging to ride.
I wish I could buy one of these. In Oz, we have Learner's licence process, where we are restricted to around 52HP, I was lazy and didnt't go full licence for 1.5 years because of the Lockdowns. Turns out, we are still restricted to 52HP even on full licence for the first 3 years! That will be 4.5 years on restricted motorcycles below 52HP! You guys are lucky in the US!
I’m in the US and have a modified Yamaha R3, honestly I’m keeping up and out riding other new riders on 600RR’s in the mountains. I do fall behind in the straights but not by much. 43RWHP.
These FTRs remind me a lot of the older tube frame buells. Kinda like cruiser hearts on sportier but not quite pure sport bike frames. enough TQ to spin the rear tire but not enough to power wheelie the heavy thing

Please side by side the FTR with the first gen (2007-2009) 990 (LC8) Super Duke 120 horse 73 ft-lbs. for a more modern competition the new 890 Duke is making 120hp & 68ft-lbs.
Maybe the FTR could be compared to another expensive, heavy, sporty twin cylinder bike with 1200cc and gobs of torgzzz made by your most beloved manufacturer…THE SPEED TWIN!!!
I've owned the speed twin and I have to disagree. Power is quite different in stats, feel of the bikes are loads different, ergonomics are different and the ftr is a far bigger bike in stance. I did love my speed twin until it has the headlight harness issue, then I sold it however I just can't see it being on a similar platform status with the ftr. I mean this respectfully. I'd like to hear your thoughts on why you would compare the two tho. :)

@@mattcm32 I would say the triumph build "quality", not reliability, would be very similar to the Indian. The triumphs are very smooth riding bikes and have great throttle control and a great motor. The Indian is just more..... Peppy? Throttle happy? Unpredictable? Something along those lines. It's a bike that can scare the crap out of you lol the triumph I was never scared of, I always knew what the throttle was going to do. That allowed for a much more relaxing ride but the Indian is just not as relaxing, she's an animal lol
The new FTR for 2022 doesn't use the same tires as the 2021 and earlier models the only one that uses the 18" rear and 19" front is the Rally model the other models use a 17" wheel & tire package with Metzler sport tires which are great but are much sportier than the Dunlop's on previous models . It also changes the suspension on all models as well .
Isn’t this a tough comparison? Besides the dollars, the weight thing is a huge factor, IMO…affecting handling AND power distribution. Let’s find another 530 pound naked sport bike with 120 HP….are there any?
This makes me REALLY want to see them compare like a full bagger shootout, Indian Challenger, HD Roadglide, Kawi Vaquero (obv best bang for buck) and? I don't want to throw the BMW into the mix because its clearly more of a sport tourer (i mean the BMW that most people say would decimate the King of the Bagger races).

Intangibles are hard to quantify. The feels count for so much in this purchase. You've just gotta test ride it if you're not sure what you want.

I rode both today in Sturgis they are both very good bikes. A better comparison than you’d think.

It seems like most of the problems with the FTR come down to the rubber. Would you guys consider swapping out the tyres for somthing sportier and doing another review ?

The FTR Compares great against the following Bikes: CB1000R - Ducati Monster 1200 - XSR900 - Thruxton. I ended up picking the CB1000R and the Honda naked just did it right, and nobody knows what it is.
I have a 2011 CB1000r and haven’t found a bike that compares although I rode a 2023 FTR and loved it.
There's a joker in the deck. The Speed Triple RS 1050. A bit more than the XSR and a bit less than the FTR. Comes with all the goodies. Looks great, sounds great, impeccable build quality, really good power and torque, all in a single sided swing arm package.
If I have the money and I can just pick the one I want, I’m taking the Indian 🤷🏻♂️. It just looks amazing! Of course the new model is going to be an even better street scorcher than the original version. Either way, I would get the Indian IF I could pick the one I want. In the real world I’m getting the Yamaha.
You need to compare the FTR 1200 against the new Sportster S. That’s who HD made it to compete against, price and size wise.

Compare it to a Ducati Hypermotard…. Maybe. Hp is close. “Torges” close. Both V-twins. Both will slide the rear wheel around with ease. Price point is very similar depending on trim. SVE is like 14kish. Then there is the base and then the SP. Displacement, weight, and wheel size are the big differences. Unless you grab the new FTR. Then you can eliminate wheel size difference. 🍻
Still a 100 lb weight difference.

Great job one this one. For me there really is no comparing these 2 bikes at all. For me like cars or whatever the Yamaha would be a bike you’d buy with your head and Indian would be one you buy with your heart. Japanese bikes you buy for the reliability and price where the Indian yeah is about character. For me both would be fun which is the biggest factor of all and if you don’t find that fun factor it’s a bad choice either way.

I'm a bit late, but I think I've figured out a good bike to compare to the FTR. The BMW r1250r is kind of similar. It is very unique, as it is designed like a sport naked, but it uses an air-cooled boxer engine. So both of these bikes are basically performance machines with the heart of a cruiser.

I'd like to see it compared to the MT-09 SP, top of the line MT vs the FTR. I think that's a bit more fair cost vs cost.
I'd like to see that too, I'm torn on what torquey bike I want to move up to from my XSR700. MT09SP and the new Ftr1200 look good but the MT is cheaper.
The FTR is the Monster Ducati SHOULD have made- especially now that they come with sporty rubber. Especially with the akro high mount exhaust!

You need to compare the 2022 FTR against the 2021 FTR. There is a big difference in feel due to the different wheel and tire selection. Also they updated the throttle control on the 2022 model.
Always been a fan of the FTR's styling. Would love to see a comparison between this and the Ducati Monster 1200S.
Im trapped between both of these bikes. And for the heavy price tag between them both I have to make the right decision.
First of all...nice vid! I drove a FTR last year and it was really a fun bike ,...then I drove a MT09 ...design wise not my cup of tea...but man....the triple makes me smile all day long! I would rather stick to the triple...next week I think I will get a XSR 900 Abarth. What I think is also a point to go against the FTR is the price...as mentioned in the vid...12000 € here in EU i think it is worth it, but not 15 K in the entry level / black edition with a sporty exhaust. On top the bike I drove was quit new but had already rusted screws....hmmm not at this price point....as I said the FTR is really a lot of fun but the triple is just something! The answer to this video is my bike the Triumph Speed Twin. It is closest to the fun factor of the XSR with the fit and finish of the FTR. I considered both of those bikes and also the Triumph scrambler XC. The Speedy is light torquey and handles great. Top end is disappointing but i'm not running from the popos!
Love my 2020 XSR. They make a great base to modify to your taste. They deserve a high quality suspension setup (Nitron stuff in mine). Some cosmetic upgrades and they are a brilliant and fast bike that can reflect your personality. They look a tonne better than the ugly as sin MT09
Triumph Scrambler 1200 XE! More of a cruiser style bike like the FTR rather than a naked sport bike. Similar price range, also has top notch electronics (TC, IMU, etc).
Compare the FTR to various ADV bikes because why not. ADV's are pretty popular so it might make a good baseline.

I now own a 2018 yamaha xsr900. Previously coming from a 2014 triumph thruxton 900. I like the Yamaha but it feels completely soulless and bland to ride (mine is completely stock), im hoping an exhaust will completely change that.
I like the XSR a lot more than the MT09. The MT series looks way too transformer mutant for my taste. The FZ09 was classy too, but I don't know if they make those anymore.
fz09=mt09. they just called it the fz09 in north america. same bike as the mt09 anywhere else

Wouldn't mind seeing them compare the cb1000r compared to the ftr. They make power completely different. However, the styling language is pulling from similar ingredients. The costs are very close to each other. Would interesting to see how different they are
I have a 2011 CB1000r and I’m looking at a 2023 FTR.
Put it against cb1000r abs or z900rs. All priced very close to each other. Plus the looks.
Compare it to a Katana. Similar power and weight, both modern retro styling, both hooligans.
Thinking that Katana is anything other than ugly is beyond me.
But to each their own.

@@Tyler.2488 yes exactly. I test rode the MT and though it’s low end was a bit more torquey….it just doesn’t feel good up top. The Z stays smooth and fast all the way

Compare it against the Aprilia Caponord 1200. Same torque numbers, same HP. Strip the panniers and take them both to the track and hit the twisties. (and DON'T leave the Cap ADD set to "Auto"'.)

My MT09 is a ton of fun. I'm not a speed junkie but I'm definitely a hooligan. Wheelies & rolling burnouts all day. MT09 is a perfect companion for having fun & not being too serious.
I sold mine after two years. Full exhaust, tuned, full suspension and all. I guess it wasn't my thing. It is a special bike. I recently got a gsxs1000 and have been enjoying it more even though it is/was stock. Just put new headers and getting it tuned. Bikers will always fine a reason to switch. I don't miss my mt09 2018 but have plenty of respect for it agter 10,000 miles.

I know it's an old thread, but I own a 2007 Electra Glide, chipped, cammed, dyno'd at 115hp, and I'm wanting to add another motorcycle, and I'm currently trying to decide between the FTR - R carbon, and the BMW S1000XR.
My FTR doesn’t have traction control or rider modes lol. Try sticking some Pirelli Rally STR tires on the FTR, it’s pretty tame around the corners with them. The Dunlop tires are a little Squeamish. There are not a lot of brands that make street tires for the 2019-2021 wheel sizes.
Supposedly you can retrofit it and any other base models with those abilities. At least that's what I was told at the dealership. The guy said the only thing the base models lack is the display and you can order it separately but it's a bit pricey. Everything else they need for those features is already there.

A bike with good torque is so amazing, mine is 87 lb-ft and even to overtake a vehicle you dont need to go down the gears, you stay in the same gear and just twist the throttle and it goes..
My pick would be a head to head with A Triumph Scrambler 1200.. Best new flat trackers out there, and very comparable imho, in all aspects.. Good vid, cheers!
I'd love for Triumph to make a lower displacement, lighter Scrambler. Something in the 400 cc to 600 cc range. A bike that's flickable and engaging to ride.

In Oz, we have Learner's licence process, where we are restricted to around 52HP, I was lazy and didnt't go full licence for 1.5 years because of the Lockdowns.
Turns out, we are still restricted to 52HP even on full licence for the first 3 years! That will be 4.5 years on restricted motorcycles below 52HP!

I’m in the US and have a modified Yamaha R3, honestly I’m keeping up and out riding other new riders on 600RR’s in the mountains. I do fall behind in the straights but not by much. 43RWHP.

These FTRs remind me a lot of the older tube frame buells. Kinda like cruiser hearts on sportier but not quite pure sport bike frames. enough TQ to spin the rear tire but not enough to power wheelie the heavy thing

Please side by side the FTR with the first gen (2007-2009) 990 (LC8) Super Duke 120 horse 73 ft-lbs. for a more modern competition the new 890 Duke is making 120hp & 68ft-lbs.
Maybe the FTR could be compared to another expensive, heavy, sporty twin cylinder bike with 1200cc and gobs of torgzzz made by your most beloved manufacturer…THE SPEED TWIN!!!
I've owned the speed twin and I have to disagree. Power is quite different in stats, feel of the bikes are loads different, ergonomics are different and the ftr is a far bigger bike in stance. I did love my speed twin until it has the headlight harness issue, then I sold it however I just can't see it being on a similar platform status with the ftr. I mean this respectfully. I'd like to hear your thoughts on why you would compare the two tho. :)

@@mattcm32 I would say the triumph build "quality", not reliability, would be very similar to the Indian. The triumphs are very smooth riding bikes and have great throttle control and a great motor. The Indian is just more..... Peppy? Throttle happy? Unpredictable? Something along those lines. It's a bike that can scare the crap out of you lol the triumph I was never scared of, I always knew what the throttle was going to do. That allowed for a much more relaxing ride but the Indian is just not as relaxing, she's an animal lol

The FTR actually starts at 13k, the big boy in the series is the race replica (carbon edition now) which is 17k. It was cheaper...
The new FTR for 2022 doesn't use the same tires as the 2021 and earlier models the only one that uses the 18" rear and 19" front is the Rally model the other models use a 17" wheel & tire package with Metzler sport tires which are great but are much sportier than the Dunlop's on previous models . It also changes the suspension on all models as well .
How about comparing it to the Triumph scrambler 1200?or the speed twin?
Isn’t this a tough comparison? Besides the dollars, the weight thing is a huge factor, IMO…affecting handling AND power distribution.
