He was most certainly unappreciated during his own time. His art pushed the limits; it bent the rules. He broke some barriers and never apologized for it. One of the best directors of Mid-20th Century Cinema.
Totally agree ive seen 6 of his films now Rebel In A Lonely Place Bigger Than Life The Lusty Men They Live By Night and Born To Be Bad and all the themes he explored are very interesting to me and still resonate today. I need to see Johnny Guitar and im seeing On Dangerous Ground in a film noir screening at my local cinema next week so im looking forward to that. He is one of my all time favourite directors
Yes Nicholas Ray was Cinema! Happy Birthday Nick! Miss you! Wish you were still here! When I think of movies you could be making and the movies that we have from the directors today i get sick. Why couldn't you still be here!!!!! And why are the french the first to appreciate someone like you?
Great montage work! Can you please tell me the source for the Truffaut footage? And also: who is the one saying almost all his great pictures are about people crushed and defeated by society? Thanks!

To me, Nicholas Ray's films had more of an impact AND reflection onto the American history than John Ford's films had.
Great job man
