    Overnight the Z6III has become my go to camera for video, and though I tend to prefer the 45 megapixels of the Z9 for stills, the smaller camera will probably come out of the bag more often for photos as well because of the smaller size and carry weight. Nikon caught up and in plenty of ways surpassed the competition at this price point. I’m looking forward to seeing what else they roll out in the future.

      Yep agree.. used to be, that you use a different camera for photo, then another camera for video..Z6III is more than capable to do both. It's like my Z9 but in a smaller form factor.

      That's three in a row where Nikon caught up, all revolving around the Expeed7 processor.
      In the future: engineering exchanges with the RED team?

    • @waveland
      @waveland Месяц назад

      @@UnconventionalReasoningI wouldn’t guess there’s much (if any) electronic design compatibility between Red equipment and Nikon cameras. Maybe they could turn out a Z-mount Komodo in less than a full product cycle??? But beyond that I’m assuming we will not see any overlap for years. But maybe Nikon can help Red get prices down.

    • @UnconventionalReasoning
      @UnconventionalReasoning Месяц назад

      @@waveland The Expeed7 processor already has the ability to handle N-Raw. It seems likely that an Expeed8 processor could handle both N-Raw and REDCODE-Raw. The sensors are different, but if Nikon can incorporate some of the RED sensor technology in their sensors, it could make an even better sensor than what the Z9/Z8 have. And RED cameras could benefit from Nikon's AF, especially the current generation. In an interview, former RED CEO Jarred Land said that the Nikon processor was very appealing to RED.

    A friend of mine is using Canon while I'm on Nikon and I've always preferred the image from the Nikon. But his pretty old and really cheap camera can still do decent video autofocus, which Nikon only recently caught up to with the Z9 and the cameras that followed it. I'm really happy that there is finally something for me to actually want to upgrade to from my D5300.

    • @OriginalWatchcow
      @OriginalWatchcow Месяц назад +2

      I have decided the D5300 is an anomaly. Nikon released it as one of the first crop sensor cameras with Expeed 4 and no AA filtration on the sensor. They swung for the fences, and at the time, hit it out of the park.
      Having worked with later versions the D5500/5600, D3400/3500 it seems like those were de-tuned a bit and not performing in low light in the same league that the D5300 and D7200 could. After 10 years I still use my D5300 regularly and don't feel like it's image making ability is in any way second rate even compared to much newer cameras I have from Nikon, Sony, and Fujifilm. Yes of course there are different limits, but when I regularly used Canon cameras at work, each generation was a little different and not always better, but there was never a time I have ever thought, "Yanno, I really miss the images that (insert earlier model) gave us.
      What really ticks off some of the people I work with covering events is indoor dinners and receptions. When we have to cover groups at tables and use flash. My lowly D5300 makes it a trivial act while my mirrorless friends are fighting with getting a focus lock in candle light and these systems regularly throw erratic flash exposure. I have other cameras and the D5300 is a backup and occasional "special teams" player. It's all about use case, but it's been a trouper and still remains that front seat travel companion because the size and weight are so handy. I keep hoping we get a Z50ii or similar in the near future that embodies most of the spirit of the D5300. The Z5 is solid, and I use it more now than the D5300, but it's still a bigger and heavier camera, and a full frame sensor brings its own downsides.

    • @zeemon9623
      @zeemon9623 Месяц назад +1

      @@OriginalWatchcow Yeah, as you said there are professional use cases where a Z6 III won't really be any better than a D5300. It's easy to get blinded by shiny new gear but there is so much more to taking pictures than a camera body.
      The 24MP meta has gone on for quite a while now because for so many situations it's just enough. And it's not like low light performance got astronomically better either.

      Got my z6iii today & am returning it. My original z6 is MUCH smaller/lighter, has better iso performance & feels better built. Gotta feel them in your hand side by side to understand. Z6iii feels cheap in comparison. Also af-s hunts for a sec on the z6iii, original z6 focusing is much smoother in that mode, ironically, which is what I mostly use. Also the sounds the shutter makes when turning the camera on & off are louder & annoying. I might be happy w it if the original z6 didn’t feel, sound, and operate in af-s so much better. this camera has already received a lot of criticism for its low dynamic range, which forces more lightening of shadows and significantly more noise. Tony pointed out the Z6 III is much worse than the Z6 II in this. The worst are the corners of the images, where the automatic vignetting correction of light lenses brightens the image a lot before the shadows are generally lightened... The Sony a9 III also has low DR and higher noise, but it has a global sensor, so this is an extreme solution. Nikon cannot defend this against the competition with "only" a folded sensor.

    Hello, Jared... Yesterday, I tried comparing the z6iii and z8 side by side.
    Wondering If a 24MP sensor can produce a raw file that is near about 27MB in size, how can a 46MP sensor of z8 can make raw files that are nearly the same size?
    I would like to know your thoughts on lossless compressed files.
    Having previously used a D850, these issues are confusing me about whether to purchase a Nikon system.

      A head-scratcher is though, that noise reduction has been applied: at least, the color noise has been removed completely. Hopefully this is not a cheating route taken by Nikon to conceal semi-stacked sensor weaknesses. Hopefully this was just the RAW converters default denoising settings left on its defaults (accidentally). They all remove a lot of chromatic noise by default, because nobody would like to keep that anyway.

    Well summarized.
    EVERY more or less recent camera today has such noise bevaviour.
    (Rolling Shutter)
    Own addition: The rolling shutter nuances are probably not important anyway, unless your photos belong to the 0.001% of photos displaying someone hitting a baseball. Or, outside of the US: 0.000% of photos, when rounded up generously 😉
    (Noise Reduction) 😱
    Regarding noise, a head-scratcher is though, that noise reduction has been applied: at least, the color noise has been removed completely. Hopefully this is not a cheating route taken by Nikon to conceal semi-stacked sensor weaknesses. Hopefully this was just the RAW converter's default denoising settings left on its defaults (accidentally). They all remove a lot of chromatic noise by default, because nobody likes chromatic noise, and nobody wants to keep it.
    If and how much luminance noise (=grainy noise) is removed as well by default, we don't know, until tested e.g. by DPReview, or by a lab (DxO or PhotonsToPhotos).

      what do you mean? Is your question: when is the next Sony A7 iteration due, which then will probably overshadow the Z6III?
      The old A7 IV of 2021 is already 3 years old. If we assume a 4 years cycle, then the A7 V is due already in 2025.
      So, unless someone is already bound to Z due to lens investments, then it would be advisable to wait until just next year.
