Thanks for joining me!
Wow, thanks so much. I’m excited to combine embroidery, quilting and painting!
I think I have been living under a rock for the past few years...never seen these Inktense colours. I have been in hospital, and my husband thought that these would give my brain something new to do [I am a pastel artist] OH ... I just can't wait for them to get here!
Thoroughly enjoyed your commonsense approach, and careful instructions. Thank you very much.
What an amazing tutorial! Thank you so much for sharing. I can't wait to dive in with my inktense pencils and your free pdf!
This is a great tutorial. I have been looking for one where I did not have to buy fabric medium which is just another expensive supply to buy. Thanks so much for sharing.
Your explanation is very very good and so helpful! Better than what’s on the Inktense site!!
Glad it was helpful!
thank you Helen, for sharing your knowledge and tricks of the trade with us!
My pleasure!
A beautiful project! Thank you for sharing.
I very much enjoyed you tutorials. The information on the fabric is Wonderful! Thank you.
Your welcome.
How pretty is this! Thank you so much.
This is beyond awesome!!!!
So excited to play with this. But first I need to go to Fabric store and bless the fabric to find the right stuff! Thank you Helen!
Have fun!
I finally sat down and did my wren...... now I’m hooked! Love your tutorials! I always learn so much! Thank you! 🥰
Thank you so much for this! I have used inktense blocks on fabric but I just bought a small set (12) pencils hoping for more control. I tend to use the block like watercolors - adding water to them and painting on the fabric. Your tips on NOT washing out the sizing was a game changer for me - i was always dealing with bleed to some extent but I worked with it - often I would use black thread to outline after painting and I was ok with a "doodle like" effect and some paint outside the lines. This will allow a totally different style to add to my creations. Thank you!!!
So glad you get it. Yep the right fabric makes all the difference.
Thanks, you are so wonderful for sharing with us. I bought these pencils over a year ago and never even took them out yet...now I am inspired!!
Glad it was helpful!
Helen, you are a great teacher! Finally after many attempts to get this first time project right I have almost done my first project with a few bumps in the road on my way. I've decided I need to visit your home page to get a few things so I can continue to develop my skills. Thank you Helen.
So wonderful to watch and learn all about your beautiful work Helen.
A big thankyou for sharing.
My pleasure 😊
Mesmerized by your videos. Thanks for sharing as I have learned so much. Love the inktense & your quilting & have practiced the techniques.
You are so welcome!
I just love watching you work. I learn a lot, thank you for your videos.
You are so welcome
I purchased these pencils and now know I've been using them wrong ( I wet the pencil first lol). Thank you for showing me the best technique! Now I'm inspired.
Glad I could help!
I wet mine for some applications. Inktense pencils are very versatile.
When I used ink-tense pencils on a quilt I made (Elizabeth’s Lost dress) I made various samples (washed/unwashed, water/aloe vera/medium) prior to starting on the main project I found the water did bleed out into the surrounding fabric. So I used a fabric medium/water mix. Now I think I will have to have another go after watching these videos to see if I can get it to work better with straight water. I wonder if my calico may have been more open weave than yours Helen which encouraged to water to spread further. I can feel another project coming on. Loved working with the intense pencils.
its the medium that stops it from spreading. Using medium you lose some of the attributes of the pencils. Using just water AND on the right fabric means grea colour blend and movement only where you want it to go
Excellent presentation! Thanks so much for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you. Very clear and informative demonstrations. Can't wait to give it a go. Two questions:
1) After you ironed off the Frixion pen, what type of marker did you use to outline in black where you were going to stitch?
2) Can the painted fabric be washed after it has been quilted?
I use a SUPER fine black Sharpie to outline. These items are not recommended for washing. They are for displaying
Just ordered these pencils...can’t wait to use them
Hi Helen, thank you so much, no I can go back to all the watercolour techniques I did years ago - but this time on fabric!!
Wonderful!
Thank you for this video. I have a set of inktense pencils , a piece of calico, but was to scared to start.
You can do it!
What an eye opener, thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
This was wonderful!! Thank you!!!
You are so welcome!
Beautiful! Thank you for posting.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I LOVED THIs! I have subscribed to your chanel. I watched this while I was coloring. I love fabric and this is perfect for me. Thank you so much! Tweet tweet. Lol
Glad my video assisted you. X
That's beautiful! Thank you!
Thank you Helen.❤️

Thanks I got these pencils for Christmas.
Thank you so much, really interesting.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome 🤩
Thank you! Cheers!
I had to subscribe after watching this work of art
This is just fascinating. I will be giving this a try. New sub
Wonderful Helen, I’ve just bought some inktense pencils and looking forward to playing with them. Thanks for this post.
Great instructions!!
Thank you!
Amazing!!
Thank you! Cheers!
I live in Canada, and I've always called this fabric, Factory Cotton.
Such a great tutorial and great information, thank you so much 💓 😊!! What type of pen did you use for outlining? Thank you 😊.
Sharpie is my go to as it doesn't bleed and is permanent
Loved this!
I'm inspired, thank you ❣
Thank you so much. You have inspired me to try this out.
this is awesome, thank you so very much
Glad you liked it!
Amazing video thankyou xx 😊
Thank you for sharing!
No worries!
Thanks Helen
What a phenomenal video series this was❗ And you provided it to us for free. Unbelievable. Thank you.
I noticed you were drawing on unbleached muslin. Can I do the same thing on bleached muslin?
What kind of marker were you using to outline in the end?
And is the iron all the heat setting that is required?
I have had a set of pencils for quite some time. Now with your great instruction I can try this out. Thank you again.
If your bleached muslin passes the water flick test then you are good to go. I normally would use my superfine Sharpie but it was missing in action. Cotton setting on your iron.

Thank you🌻
This is lovely and I can’t wait to have a go! I’ll need to find some calico in the UK first. How do you transfer the drawing to the calico?
I used a FriXion pen. You could use a pencil very lightly.
Wonderful. Thank you.
Amazing! Thank you!
Fabulous xx
Thank you so much. I learned a lot
I'm so glad!
Hi Helen. Really enjoyed this video. It opens up so many possibilities. I have one question, which I haven’t found in any of the comments below Part 1 or Part 2 . What do you put under the fabric while you are painting? I was thinking that if you put something absorbent, like another fabric or paper, it could cause the colour to wick out of the fabric you are working on. If you have a non-absorbent surface, like a sheet of plastic say, then it might also cause wicking sideways as it creates an impermeable barrier which makes the moisture flow sideways, depending on how wet the top fabric ends up being, as you blend the colours. So what base do you use under the fabric you are painting on to prevent these two possible problems? Thanks.
I don't use anything absorbent. it would suck colour away from the fabric. I tend to use an old cutting mat as a painting surface. The fabric never gets so soaking wet as to wick underneath. It should not be so wet. If i am doing wet on wet technique where I do pre wet the fabric it is damp thru not sopping wet. In that case I don't move the fabric either or it will sit in a wet patch and wick the colours. I have never had an issue as long as I don't more the fabric around on the cutting mat surface.
@@HelenGoddenQuilts Hi Helen. Thanks for the quick response. Will have to try some different things as I don’t have an old cutting mat to use. Hope you’ll be doing some more of these inktense pencil videos as they’re really enjoyable and helpful.
Can't wait to try this. Thanks for the printout of the Wren. How did you transfer the drawing onto the fabric? I have heat erasable pens that I am going to use but did you use a light-box or what? Thank you. Debbie from North Carolina, USA
Working on light fabric such as Muslin/ calico, you don’t need a light box. You will see the design thru the fabric. Yes I use a FriXion pen for this tracing.
Great tutorial thankyou can I ask what friction pen you use please 😊
Any colour FriXion pen. This was blue. They disappear with heat so I iron the Friction pen away when the piece is dry.
@Helen Godden Quilts thankyou so much im a total newbie and I can't wait to have a go , ive subscribed and love your work x
Helen thanks so much for this video. I have checked out quite a few videos and was frustrated with the outcome. Especially having to use some sort of stabiliser. So your suggestion of just using calico was brilliant. What I am wondering is about the quality of the calico. I bought mine from Spotlight in the curtain section and I find it to be fairly loosely woven with lots of little fabric pieces coming off as I paint. Is this what you use or do you go for the more expensive dress type calico?
Do you have a link for the removable outline pen? Thanks
I loved the tutorial I made one on muslin (I tried different ones) but the color run when I added water. I tried with a textile medium but it did not spread easily. What I'm i doing wrong. Oh btw I tried ordering the one you sell but unfortunately no delivery to my area. Thanks for the inspiration!
I post everywhere in the world do that’s not a problem. Before you purchase your muslin, flick it with water and see if it beads or bleeds. If it beads it’s the right fabric. Do not wash it.
Thank you❤️
No problem
I really enjoyed watching your video. Question for you, after you finish the coloring can they be washed?
Yes with a thorough ironing first. However I never wash wall hangings.
Just finally got the wren all painted, now to watch it dry! How do you clean your brushes? Mine seem permanently stained.
If they are a white style synthetic they will gradually take on the dye colours. Wash with soft detergent gentle not scrubbing. I also sell Bonza brush cleaner on my website
@@HelenGoddenQuilts They are a white synthetic. I loved painting on fabric and will do the Flower Power next. Thanks.
Is this washable when dry? So stunning!!
Yes. Iron well. And then it is washable but I never wash wall hangings.
Love your tutorial, I wish I came upon your video before I started my block. So I now need your advice, as a quilter I washed my muslin fabric, and fixon pen traced pattern, how can still use this fabric? Can I use spray starch
And iron the fabric ? And start all over or is my project done for.?
Buy another piece of calico....you will be glad you did.
@@HelenGoddenQuilts ok I will, redo everything at least it will be done up properly.
As I have used lots of different
Mediums, with not being successful, I might add.
So I'm eager to try this. Thank you again
Now for the first time I undestand why my colours are bleeding, in the wrong places. WRONG FABRIC!!! Thanks so much for this videos.
Yeah...successful learning!
❤️
Hi Helen just found you and subscribed. Great teaching 👍I have the pencils and the blocks. Have you tried the blocks? I prefer them for textiles actually. Hugs Kate in New York
What pen did you use to add the black outline
A super fine sharpie.
If you had a fabric that did bleed could spraying it with sizing prior to painting help?
The calico/muslin fabric I use works because the entire fabric is drenched in sizing and starch during manufacturing. I doubt spraying the surface would give the same results. You can try it.
I don't understand why I see pencil lines in the border yet? I do love the idea of using muslin. I buy it many times a year. I have to check and see if I have any in my stash that's unwashed
Not sure what you are asking?
Can a hairdryer or heat gun be used to speed up the drying between colors?
Is there a way to “FIX” the colours in the fabric, to make it washable? Does ironing the fabric afterwards do that?
Heat setting will make it washable. Heat very well just don't iron. Needs to be heat set, say 5 -10 seconds on the painted area.
Yes the ironing is helping to set it. However as the colour is INK , once it is water activated it sinks into the fibres and is permanent.
Very good, what black pen are you using, is it fine tip marker?
Yes it’s a Sharpie marker
This is a great tutorial but my muslin evidently isn't the same as yours because mine bled like crazy!
Do a water flick test. You want the water to bead not bled. If you have trouble sourcing the best muslin, I sell it on my website. helengodden.com/store/calico-muslin-magic-fabric/
Is this cotton fabric you are painting on? Also, I understand this will work for a wall hanging which isn’t washed frequently, of at all. Will the colors remain if completed on a quilt block?
I notice there is no bleeding on calico. Does that mean the calico I am using is not god quality? Also what size brush are you using?
The black outlining, is that the Sharpie? It doesn't bleed?
Helen, can i use a hair dryer to dry areas if I'm in a hurry?
Can you wash this after?
Do you ever put freezer paper on the back to stabilize the fabric when you paint.
No. Try it. I would be concerned that if you over wet an area, the paper could allow the colour to wick thru to other areas. I have never felt the need for adding freezer paper.
If this type of fabric is unavailable, will a spray sizing applied to the fabric produce the same results?
You could try but i doubt it. the spray would be only on the surface. Just try it.
How do you keep it from bleeding beyond your black lines ?
Watch the video. I explain it all including the see I fix fabric I use.
Question: could I use the medium after I finished the project? What I mean to sealed it completely.
will the colour wash out if you wash it how do you wash it to keep the colour thank you .
The colours are permanent once they are activated by water, dry and then iron. It would withstand gentle hand washing but I never wash as my pieces are wall hangings.
Could you use these pencils on a cotton flannel fabric? Wanted to embellish a blouse made of flannel.thank you.
Thank you for all the inspiring information! I have the pencils, but didn't have much of a technique for good results. I can't wait to try your methods. I also went to the Gallery on your website.Your quilting is fantastic and creative - love it! A question - some of your pieces had a large amount of black in background. Did you start with black fabric OR is it painted/colored? Im not aware of black muslin.
Black fabric but painted with acrylic paint not Inktense. Inktense won’t work on black. It would sink in and not be visible. On black I paint with Lumiere. I have many videos on RUclips of me painting.
How color fast and light fast are these pencils? Thank you 🌷
They are colourfast and light fast.
@@HelenGoddenQuilts Thank you so much! It 2:15 am in Washington state. Just relaxing and getting inspired by your lovely work😁
Will there be a 3rd video on the quilting
Not this project...it was all about the INKtense lesson. Have a look at my 2 x Flower Power series. There is 18 blocks in total of quilting demonstration all for FREE right here on my channel.

Question Mrs godden: do you have the cathedral quilt box measurements for windows? My window I want to be 8 inches with queen 100 x 89 in.
I am sorry I dont understand your question
@@HelenGoddenQuilts cathedral quilt box window size chart. So I want an eight inch box window what size should I cut the outside piece? 9 1/2 squares and 2 1/2 window squares. I want my windows to be 8 inches
HELEN, what pen do you use to outline the figures before painting?
I use a Frixion pen on the light coloured fabric. It can be painted over and iron away completely later.
@@HelenGoddenQuilts thanks
