I absolutely love the quilt you are making. I also want to put out there. If you want them to be permanent on fabric. You need to use heat to set them. Also it is better to use a binder like GAC900 made by Golden , there are other brands as well. Follow directions on the bottle for application. Yes you can use water but still needs to be heat set. If you intend to wash more than once as the color will fade.
Hi, actually they don't need to be heat set, just water and dry. It is ink, remember when we used to get ink on our clothees - well it never came out! A medium is also good but not necessary to do what I am doing here.
I trialed these pencils, including iron set, and it didn't make it through 1 wash. I see no reason whatsoever these are being called "permanent". I've not yet trialed with a binder.
I am new on this channel. I like how you show to dry it with an iron. But Inktense isn’t ink it is high pigmented therefore it looks like ink. I use aso Gac 900.- If you use it on paper, like watercolor, when it is dry you can’t be lift it like normal watercolor.
Oh I get it now! I was having a lot of trouble with the color bleeding beyond the spot I wanted it and you’ve shown me the secret! I need to dry it right away. THANKS!
What a wonderful tool to add to the textile artist's box of tricks. I didn't know the Inktense pencils were permanent on fabric-- great to know. Thanks for sharing this technique, Susan-Claire!
I bought this set of Inktense pencils for my son this past spring and bought 4 different colors in the Inktense crayon shapes for myself. I am doing a “rubbing” technique on alternate white quilt blocks in the shape of states. I had seen someone do this technique using leaves and could not wait to do it on this quilt. The owner of the art supply shop showed me how to make it permanent, which is pretty easy. Loved your tutorial!
I love that you mentioned the shavings, because I treated myself to the entire set of the Inktense blocks a few years ago to add to my art supplies. I never thought to use them on fabric! So excited to try it! Lovely project you’ve done here. Thank you for sharing!
This video was very informative and your work is luscious. I do not quilt but admire the work. I just received my Inktense chalk blocks and pencils and cant wait to create. Guess I need water pens now. Thank you so much and stay safe and well.
Thank you so much - another inspiring video! I have a tip to minimize the bleeding of the pigment: instead of using water to set the pigment, you can use a gel such as Aloe Vera gel, and it seems to make the colour even more intense.
Ooo ooo I have a set of 24. Bought over 2 years ago and never learned what to do with them. Now I understand. Did you know if you use fabric with the sizing left in it the colors won't bleed after you make a drawing and then paint it.i learned it today on another channel here. I'm ready to start. I have muslin with the sizing in it and I'm ready to tackle this. Thank you. So much for your inspiration. Ok I need more potatoes. Lol I'm hungry
I just bought the same set you have. Can’t wait to get started on my project. I was so excited to see your tutorial. I knew I would learn everything I needed to know watching you create. Thanks!
oh wow this is wonderful - i need to share this video with a few of my quilting friends - thank you so much for sharing this with us - i love what you have made - its so pretty
This is stunning, what an awesome idea. I never thought about using these on fabric. Awesome awesome awesome. I love your videos, I always learn something. TY
Thank you, I love fabric and pencils paint etc but not always sure how to use them. I love your project and now I’m going to treat myself to some inktense pencils. You always teach me something when I watch your videos. Thanks for sharing.😃❤️
I love it!! this new technique, thanks for sharing. I will try it. I found out there s a inktense blocks too, you paint the fabric with chalks, brilliant!!
Brilliant video, I’ve used these pencils before but I dipped them into the water and it spread out of the edges. This way you’ve got much more control of the ink. The iron is a good tip too .Thank you for showing us.
What a great idea! Thank you for sharing this! Will you also show us what this quilt looks like when it's done? I think you are very creative and inspiring! I would like to take quilting lessons with you but I live on the other side of the globe: in the Netherlands! ;)
Thanks! I'd heard that inktense work on fabric, but not found anyone showing me how to use them. This was really helpful and informative, especially the tip with using the iron to heatset the ink. 👍 On paper, the white inktense block* dries very opaquely white; I can then go over this with another colour. I wonder whether this would work to make using a light-coloured inktense possible on a dark-coloured fabric? That would further increase the possibilities for making custom quilts like this beauty. 😁 (*The white block dries more opaquely white than the white pencil for some reason. 🤷♀️ Maybe the formula is slightly different?)
Hi! Thank you for generously sharing your ideas and process with us all!! I bought Inktense about 5 years ago intending to use them on several things. I am using them on my silk art and as part of mixed media on various silk wearables. They are still very new to me, but I'm learning so much about them. Thank you for the ideas! God Bless 😃
Good morning from an admirer. I love the drawings. Did you draw them or just paint them? I think they are really good. I’ve wanted to do a line of African animals around a skirt but wasn’t sure of the products. The colors are so bright and clear. I’ll sure check back to see if your answer will show up. Love your work. The pincushions were wonderful. Thanks for your lovely tutorials. DONNA
Very much information, thanks. Last time i haven enough money to get those pencils. I will try again, this seems so interesting. You make firs raw edge aplique and sew lines for figure and then paint, perhsps I undestand right?
Hi, unfortunately they won't work on black canvas. Because it is ink it is transparent so would get lost on the black. If you painted the area to be coloured white first they could be used that way.
Are you using anything other than the water? When I apply mine to cotton quilting fabric it gets bolder but it’s not spreading or smudging like yours is. Am I doing something wrong?
so it's not washable? is it possible to do your work to become washable? I have tried with Alovera, GAC900 with heat-set... didn't work well. any suggestions?
Yes, it becomes permanent, not like waterpencils that become fluid again when you wet them a second time. If you want to blend Inktense pencils you have one go at it and that's it. Once dry they are dry for ever :-)
Hi, because the ink is transparent, it doesn't work to make a darker colour lighter unfortunately. If you need to have some lighter areas you may have to use a little paint as well, just in those areas.
Love the idea of a sketch a day quilt 💜 Thank you for demonstrating so well. Have you tried washing anything you have done with inktense yet? Whilst I know that ink doesn’t wash out I wonder if colours may fade a little?

I did half medium half water, heat set it with iron. Not seen any fading after washes so far.

As usual my favorite lady to learn things with! Love it! Thank you!

Oh you are well set up then, the blocks are also wonderful and all colour!
Wow! I have never heard of these and my jaw literally dropped as you used them! A whole new world.
They also come in small sticks (Inktense Blocks).

Just what I was looking for! I did some sampling and will be using this on my collage quilt tomorrow! Thank you for the video😊
This is stunning, what an awesome idea. I never thought about using these on fabric. Awesome awesome awesome. I love your videos, I always learn something. TY
Brilliant I never knew how to use them properly so never bought. Another great video Susan 🤗🤗
Hi! I enjoyed the content. I recently bought Inktense Pencils and didn't know I could do this with them. My goodness the possibilities!
what a good tip for using the shavings. thank you. I just ordered my set. I love Derwent pencils
Thank you, I love fabric and pencils paint etc but not always sure how to use them. I love your project and now I’m going to treat myself to some inktense pencils. You always teach me something when I watch your videos. Thanks for sharing.😃❤️
Thank you for showing how to use Inktense. Now I can shake dust off set I bought several months ago and play with fabric.
I love it!! this new technique, thanks for sharing. I will try it. I found out there s a inktense blocks too, you paint the fabric with chalks, brilliant!!

This is such excellent, original lovely work I have seen anyone do with these pencils. Inspiring!

Thank you. The tip about using the iron is just awesome!
Just got my 12 pack of inktense color blocks & looking for ideas, thanks for sharing!
That is truly amazing. I’m looking forward to combining these two loves. You are inspiring and very much appreciated! 💙 Thank you!
Wow! I did not know about these pencils! I will be sharing this!
wonderful and a great idea for new projects. Thank you for sharing
Wow! Thank you! I’ve been using my Derwent Inktense for watercolor on paper. Didn’t know I could use them on fabric! 👏🏽💝
You clever girl! What fun they look like.
I love your little drawings and thanks for the great tutorial.
Love your videos - I wish I had seen the start back in 2019 . I would have liked to have been apart of the Skitch block a day.
Hi, thanks. You can still do the Skitch a Day, it just comes all at once now, not weekly. Lots of fun to be had Skitching.....!
Fab video I cant wait to start my new project can you use the pencils on any fabric my fabric will be quite strong and heavy for a wall hanging
What a great idea! Thank you for sharing this! Will you also show us what this quilt looks like when it's done? I think you are very creative and inspiring! I would like to take quilting lessons with you but I live on the other side of the globe: in the Netherlands! ;)
Thank you so much! I just bought a box and wanted to learn how to use them on my quilts.
Awesome effect! I have these and only used them on paper. Something new to try. Nice!
Thanks so much for sharing this.
How does it look after washing and drying?
Lovely demonstration, thank you so much. Xx

What a beautiful quilting project !
This is amazing.
and so much fun!
Hmm......interesting, I did not think to use these on fabric. Thank you
Excellent demonstration!

These are just what I've been wanting. Thank you for your excellent tutorial.
Great video can I ask how they wash please & what brand pen do you use for outline? Lovely quilt, thanks 😊
Wonderful. Wish I'd known about these ages ago. Off to buy some. :)
tHANK THANK YOU - love your quilt. Such an inspiration.
Looks so fun! I'll have to try these.
Ooh might also work for one of those unintended design elements. 😊
Very good video. I may get up my brave and try this.
I’ve seen these pencils advertised, wasn’t sure about using them, thanks for the information
Thank you. what a great idea
I just discovered these on an embroidery website. Looks like fun. So of course i had to come search out RUclips to see how it works.
Thank you. Great information and demonstration.
Very nice ! Thank You !
You need a textile medium to make it permanent and then heat set. I love these pencils and blocks
Thank you so much for sharing.
Very interesting. Thank you 🧵🧵🇨🇦
This is a lovely project! I will also use my inktense pencils for coloring on fabric. May I ask which pen u use for drawing?
This is beautiful
A question do you have videos of how you sew the flower and other pieces ty I will be happy to learn how to do it blessings
what a great tutorial!
Thank you very very much. 👍😍
Thank you so much for this.

Susan, where or what did you use for your outlining? This looks so delicious
Impressed!
I have looked through all your videos and can’t find any on the Skitch a Day - can you point me in the right direction please.
Thanks for sharing. You mention ‘running’. I think if you use fabric medium instead of just water, you would not have running. All the best.
Yes, that is what I use. Half water half medium seems to work.
Very much information, thanks. Last time i haven enough money to get those pencils. I will try again, this seems so interesting. You make firs raw edge aplique and sew lines for figure and then paint, perhsps I undestand right?
yes, for this project I have done raw edge applique, stitched, then used pencils. You could also just use pencils on fabric.
Love it, thanks
Great video!
That is so cool, do you like this method better than crayons
Very creative.
What do you recommend to freehand draw the black line drawing on fabric?
maravilloso esos lápices de colores!!!!!!!🤗😍😍😉
Hi! Thank you for this tutorial! Can you use inktense pencils on black canvas? Will they show up?
Hi, unfortunately they won't work on black canvas. Because it is ink it is transparent so would get lost on the black. If you painted the area to be coloured white first they could be used that way.

Thank you
Do you always have your project wadded and backed before you paint? Thank you
Have you quilted the batting and the backing before painting them ?
Hi, the applique is stitched through the batting but no backing yet. The painting is done after the applique.
GourmetQuilter thank you
two things one , wont you get ink on the iron and two what would u outline with?
Love you!
WOW! May I ask how you find your design? Have no young ones in family so no designs.
I draw them as I think of them.
so it's not washable? is it possible to do your work to become washable? I have tried with Alovera, GAC900 with heat-set... didn't work well. any suggestions?
I’m wondering if the finished fabric can hold up to washing. Does anyone have experience with this?
What is the best fabric to use? 100% cotton or a blend?
So, this really turns permanent and what you use it on can be washed and it won’t run or wash out? Thank you 😊
Yes, it becomes permanent, not like waterpencils that become fluid again when you wet them a second time. If you want to blend Inktense pencils you have one go at it and that's it. Once dry they are dry for ever :-)
Rachel C that’s so cool! I need to try this out!!! Thank you
yes, it really becomes permanent! you know how those ink stains never came out in the wash.....well this is ink.
Janet West thank you
Is it similar to watercolor? If so then I need not worry about the soleplate of the iron....right?Pat-South Padre Island, Texas
Hi, I have never had any residue on the iron, it just glides over and dries it.
THA K SO MUCH I NOW KNOW I CAN DO TBESE N MAKE MY QUKLT
wonderful..who knew!
and what if i am not comfortable using an iron?
I’m stoned as heck and this is the most wholesome video on the internet
Can you bring up a lighter Color to a dark fabric?
Hi, because the ink is transparent, it doesn't work to make a darker colour lighter unfortunately. If you need to have some lighter areas you may have to use a little paint as well, just in those areas.
@@GourmetQuilter ... Thank you for your quick answer
Did u draw the pictures?
Yes I did!
Love the idea of a sketch a day quilt 💜 Thank you for demonstrating so well. Have you tried washing anything you have done with inktense yet? Whilst I know that ink doesn’t wash out I wonder if colours may fade a little?
Where do you buy the water brush?
Hi, they are available through art supply stores
Aloe vera gel works great instead of water x x x
