- What better way to celebrate the 190th birthday of the Long Island Rail Road than to ride its shortest branch. I thought I would be different rather than riding on the longest line out to Montauk. Since the Grand Central opening in February 2023, the West Hempstead Branch has gotten new life. Off peak services are now hourly and new routing options have been created. Who would ever have thought that I would do a midday one seat ride from Pennsylvania Station New York to West Hempstead in the middle of the day. You’d have to pinch yourself to believe it. Enjoy this M7 ride out to the far reaches of West Hempstead.

Tim, nice to see a trip to a different branch. I guess with more trains using Grand Central there is more capacity at Penn Station for direct trains from West Hempstead, Long Beach, and Far Rockaway to Penn Station.
nice trip
probably one of the LIRR's most historically important branch lines. very interesting operation, especially knowing what it used to be.
Why is this branch so important ???
Tim, thanks for the ride! I had never ridden West Hempstead or the portion of the Atlantic branch shown on this nice video. Now I feel like I have!
Great job showcasing this branch! It definitely is a rare and unique branch to see converge of.
You're really churning them out, lately, Tim. Congratulations on 14,000 subscribers.
Weather is getting nicer. Gotta pay the bills.
Thanks for the excellent commentary.
Back when NYA started, there was still one customer hanging on...Baisley Lumber. It was right after the elevated section at the start of the branch. We had to qualify on the whole branch so the original crews made a run up to West Hempstead and back. Those were probably the last freight trains to make it all the way back in 1998.
Wow. Good to know
Excellent video! Never did ride this branch…good to see from this perspective too!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Happy 190th birthday LIRR!
This reminds me of the MBTA's Needham branch, where all of the stops in West Roxbury (West Roxbury, Highland, Bellevue) are close together within a mile.
True
Deff need to catch a flying Yankee ride one of these days
Didn’t realize some West Hempstead trains took the Far Rock/Long Beach route via Locust Manor! Thought all of them took the St Albans route. Nice RFW ride!
Love this, Tim! Hope you’ll do the Port Washington Branch soon! And you were actually correct both times with the Westwood station: the platform (west) side is in Malverne, and the eastern side is in Lynbrook.
Didn't think we would ever see an off peak West Hempstead Branch train out of Manhattan. It seemed like the perfect time to ride one.
It wasn’t one of my best videos, but the subject matter I thought warranted attention
interesting that they run the trains via the Atlantic Branch. with all the switches they have to go through at Valley Stream you would think it’s easier to run via Montauk Branch.
Apparently, that’s the usual route that it takes. They are making allowances for track work by running that way
Interesting ride 💚👌
6:23 yippee!! They’re finally replacing those switches! Pretty soon we’ll be seeing Amtrak through the new bypass tunnel (eventually)
How I wish it still connected to Mineola!
The Atlantic Branch was street level until elevated in the early 60's after the closing of The Jamaica Race Track in the late 50's, (now known as Rochdale Village). I remember railroad crossing gates at Farmers Blvd near Bedell Street.
Laurelton is also receiving an elevator by the way. Locust Manor will have 2 installed, but work has yet to commence along with St. Albans. Auburndale and Valley Stream's elevators will be replaced after Lindenhurst-Copiague-Amityville-Massapequa Park are finished.
That's Cool 😎😺
13:57 that was wholesome
It's probably way more than thirty years since I rode that line. Yes, due to the infrequency of service. I actually rode on MP-54 cars on the line with short trains. I had relatives who lived in Rockville Centre. I remember how amazed I was in the 1950's to see the tracks going through populated areas in Hempstead where the live third rail was just inches from the sidewalks at grade crossings. Imagine if a dog took a pee on the third rail or a kid on a bike fell on the third rail.
At the end of the line at W Hempstead, there was a Kleins Dept store and a EJ Korvettes, as well as a Wetsons Hamburger resturant that closed in the mid 70s, I think the IHOP and White Castle are still there, also you had the huge A&S Department store a couple of miles from the station in Hempstead, that store closed in 1992.
Interesting, but it seems like an incredibly slow trip. It beats driving, though.
It’s not fast, but the zoom makes it look slower than it really is. I
Wow the Long Island Railroad is almost 200 years old making it one of the oldest passenger carrier railroads in the United States
YAY FLYING YANKEE VIDEO :D!!!!
23:03 My house is on the left side, about a 5 minute walk from the station
The West Hempstead branch is very scenic. However, it’s so short that it wouldn’t be worth railfanning.
It is better now because there’s much more service on it
Visiting LI in June for some railfanning. A trip on the West Hempstead is near the top of my list.
Go Celtics
We Are Creeping Into The Station o
the West Hempstead Branch can handle up to maximum 10 MU cars, i though 8 MUs are just enough
Nice video but did you have the zoom all the way out? Looks like you were creeping all the way
Yes, I did. The zoom exaggerates it and makes it look slower, but I do not like to get the interior of the car. I want to show the railroad. I have to settle for this if I’m shooting out the front of an M7 as opposed to an M3.
wonderful ride. How long do you think this will last ?
How long what will last?

I'm going to assume that no M3s travel to West Hempstead branch.
There was one time I recall not too long ago, but generally no
What route does the flying Yankee engineer do
I know he does West Hempstead trips and I think one other maybe Long Beach or Far Rockaway

He hasn’t done diesels in many years
