I was one of the fans that contacted him back in 2001 asking if he minded if I do a remake of his G&G themes with analog instruments. He was totally cool about it. Eventually I’ll get it done, even if it is 21 years later now.
Spider-Man and X-Men is my favorite video game OST of all time. I'm not surprised to hear that Follin had fun with that one. It was glorious, cheesy and ever so funky. I can listen to it all day.
This guy's a hero to me. Not only do I love listening to the music he made for older systems, he's also an inspiration. No real musical or computer education, but his work is brilliant nevertheless. Solstice, Equinox and Plok need more love! All great (though hard) games with superlative music.
Not sure, it never got aired on the programme but we uploaded it raw, it must have been a pause in the interview rather than something being cut out. It was shot seven years ago. . . that makes me feel old!
Ah well, at least he remembers the "Solstice" series, have to give him credit for that. It's got such a small fan base, which is probably the reason he doesn't mention it. To me, that is one of the charms the series has! By the way, I'm sad to say that Tim has stopped composing video game music as of 2006, his final work was Lemmings for the PSP.
I enjoyed his SNES stuff, Plok, Xmen Vs Spider-Man, Rock & Rolll Racing, Equinox. He really knew how to get the most out of that system. I am listening to the Plok OST on my iPod right now.... Acrylic Beach is damn amazing >>>> :)
Tim Follin is a great composer. His use of complex and crazy arpeggios in his melodies fitted so well with early sound chips. Those arps really made that limited hardware shine through. I remember hearing LED storm for the first time on the Spectrum 128k. The arpeggio was like someone firing a machine gun of musical notes at you, and it sounded so good! Even listening today, it still has that magic that you don't often hear in music. I totally get why so many people want to make constant remixes of Tim's music.
Well, he has been dissatisfied with the situation, and understandably so. As the time passes and if another game maker would approach him and offer better work conditions, maybe he wouldn't turn down the offer. Also, he has had lots of recognition as being one of few unique good chip musicians. Now he is just one of great many composers, and the rules of competition are not so clear any longer.
On part 1, I asked the question, what year is this interview, but hearing him say he worked on the game Starsky and Hutch a "couple of years ago, and that was 2003, so i'd say this interview was around 2005/2006.
His soundtrack for Ecco was awesome indeed, and a different style than I'd heard from him before. I burned a rip of the soundtrack on CD and listened to it a lot, maybe 8-10 years ago. Great stuff :)
He did Starsky & Hutch on the last gen consoles, fucking pimp, that was the main reason why I loved that limited game. I remember liking Starsky & Hutch as a wee kid. Badass Lalo Schifrin theme tune!
Even though your comment is 5 years old, I have to give you props for dropping Lalo Schifrin name in there. follin and his bro were awesome. dont forget Geoff Follin.

well send me when you got it
Plok brought me here, one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard and really addictive.

Same here, I love finally getting confirmation that it was just cheesy, experimental fun for them. It comes through.

great composer, he should come back.

Now it's been 10 years since. I also feel old, I don't see 2007 as so long ago. Greetings!

His work on Bionic Commando on the C64 is right up there with the likes of Rob Hubbard in terms of quality and ingenuity.

Akrillic and Beach are two separate songs, but both are fantastic.

Led Storm sounds like an improvised mixture of Deep Purple and Jethro tull. Brilliant!
The people who disliked this are problobly 6 year olds how are to young to understand, and there is a hole lot of them.
+Joshua Dickerson this video and part 1 too have been hit by vote bots no doubt
Equinox is by far my favorite from this guy!

I was hopping he'd talk about ecco..
I didn't even realise he worked on that. Such a versatile and talented musician.
" we stole key themes..and then just do your thing with it.."
A very similar way of working to how i used to remix game tunes.
legend
the dislikes are probably from a dislike bot. It's had 10 years for a bot to find the video, and one has

Great interview, a truly great musician. Why the cut at 2:40?
Sin duda uno de los mejores compositores de videojuegos ❤❤
@stripedhyenuh Please can you tell me who composed the music for ghosts 'n goblins on the commodore 64...Was it Tim follin or Chris butler?
