    Hello, excellent video! I just bought a '96 at a used car dealer, he found it at a State Surplus auction. When I tried it, I noticed that the key switch didn't work, it only works from the dashboard switch. I told the dealer to fix it before I bought it. He told me he couldn't locate the problem, so I found a good harness on eBay. He bought it, and he paid for it $430. Since I work with electronics and electrical equipment, he asked me if I wanted to install it, so he deducted $500 from the final price, plus the harness free of charge. A few days ago, after buying it, when I opened the panel, I discovered that it has nothing, only two wires that go directly to the window motor connector. So it seems that the state mechanics decided to remove all the cables, only leaving the one that goes to the window motor from the dashboard switch. When the weather is more moderate (I don't have a garage), I'm going to dedicate a day to install the harness, but your video plus the one from the guys from Broncos and Parts garage helped me a lot. Thank you!

      Thank you, and welcome to bronco ownership! Thats a wild way to "repair" it, never heard of anyone just chopping the whole tailgate harness out! Good luck on the repair, altho it sounds like it wont be too much of a problem for you!
      Glad my video could be of some help! Broncos and Parts Garage is a great channel too, lots of good tech over there.

    I have an 89 I can't move the window with the tailgate open. How'd you do that?

    • @part-time4wd
      @part-time4wd  Год назад +1

      The driver side tailgate latch has a switch on it, inside the tailgate, to prevent the window from rolling up or down when the tailgate is open. If you close the latch by hand then you can roll the window up & down with the gate open, which is what i did for my testing. On my green '96 that electrical switch has failed so i bypassed it, but that also means the glass will roll up or down even if the tailgate isnt fully closed, so you have to be careful.

      @@part-time4wd I'm thinking the slides are the problem tons of rust inside my tailgate. I'm repairing to sell my Bronco. I bought a minivan to go to the Grand Canyon. My wife is disabled and wants to see the canyon before she can't.

      @@DubstepHeroDH Yeah, its probably the plastic bushings in the slides. Once they seize up, the window doesnt move very good, if it all.

    A fact I know about these rear windows, the actual steel gate is the same from 78 and up, only the glass changed in 80's. now the Key window switch no longer exist in any inventory, in the known world of Earth. currently Jeffs bronco graveyard does not have stand-alone harness for just the gate. I Have already rebuilt mine with steel bearings I have about 244 left I only needed 6, I have a spare, but it's been so long sense I messed with it I am missing a connection in the harness. don't remember how it supposed to be.

    • @kevinw1277
      @kevinw1277 Год назад

      Youre close, but its actually 78-82 and 83-96. The difference is the strikers and how they attach to the tailgate. Yeah it sucks that no one makes the switch in the tailgate, youd think someone would see a business opportunity there! I guess its true that they dont fail often, but i think id still like to get my hands on a spare one.
      If you suspect a problem in the tailgate harness you can unplug it from the chassis harness and hook +12v to the Bk/W wire, and ground to both of the purple wires. Thatll allow the tailgate switch to function in both directions, so you can troubleshoot the entire tailgate & harness. If you dont find a problem, then you know its in the chassis or dash. Dont forget about the switch on the driver side striker! That failed in our 96 bronco a couple years ago so its bypassed.

    Nothing sweeter than rear window works like supposed too. fellow PA resident with same problem, in few weeks going try get to local yard try get into tail gate see what I messed up. New Tank, TIP get some body clips same size as the bolts that clip to the frame, so you don't have struggle hold the nut when try to install the strap. Nice repair, yes those scotch clips are the worse.

    • @kevinw1277
      @kevinw1277 Год назад

      Good luck! The tailgate in our 96 just stopped working as well, ended up just being corrosion in the connector where the gate harness plugs into the chassis harness. So you never know, could be lots of different problems with these old trucks!
      Good idea with the body clips for the tank hardware!

      Yes, I recommend this for every Ford truck 92+! However the 80-91 trucks/broncos use a different vacuum-operated cruise control system which doesn't use this switch.

      Its called the Electrical & Vacuum Troubleshooting Manual, or EVTM. They were originally published by Helm, Inc for Ford's dealer techs. Helm no longer prints them (but im pretty sure you can still get digital copies from them). There is another company on Ebay who is reprinting them tho, so you can still get copies if you look around. They are well worth the money.

      The tailgate window motor is the same motor as what comes in the passenger side door. Dorman makes two different rebuild kits based on model year: 747-412 is for 1978-1992 whereas 74409 is late-model '92 thru 1997.

      If you remove the access panel, it's not easy but you can get in there with a wrench and unbolt the tracks from the glass. Then you can lower the glass by hand and open the gate.
