I'm building the ultimate hackable mechanical keyboard, and the printed circuit boards have reached their final form! Last time, I reimagined the design but introduced tons of design flaws. Today, I don't just fix them - I double down. I designed and assembled SIX prototype circuit boards for this episode. Help.
This is (hopefully) the first hotswap Choc AND MX board, with south-facing RGB LEDs and massively more. The MiRage's halves are now totally independent, meaning infinite flexibility in size and shape. Magnetic pogo pin connectors let you instantly reconfigure, and detachable modules let you add knobs, sliders, and displays to your keyboard. There's far more to come.
I'm releasing the source files, but you should NOT make them! They have massive design flaws, many of which have been corrected since I shot the video. Still, someone might find a use for them. Stable versions will be released on GitHub.

Not that I don't understand everything you're doing fully and completely...but if you did a tutorial series "for dummies" on how to make one of these, even if it was on a paid platform, I would be there. For example, the part about the LED voltage issue and how you fixed it went straight over my head. Regardless of how much I understand, I frickin love your videos btw.

I get that a full how 2 electronics series is what you're after, but the LED issue is super straightforward. The microcontroller is powered by 3.3v and the LEDs take 5v. The LEDs expect a 0-5v digital signal to set the colour, but the microcontroller can only output 0-3.3v. There are a couple of ways to solve this issue. Zach chose to use a level converter to shift the 0-3.3v signal to 0-5v. The art of electronics is taking problems and chaining circuits together to solve them.
I can understand the keyboard part. What I'm too old school to figure out is what you need sliders and dials on a keyboard for?

@@DejitaruJin I'd never heard of that, until I googled it. I was assuming you were talking about converting 5v logic to 3.3v. But the trick you're talking about is pretty neat (using a "sacrificial" LED running at 4.3V as the first LED in a chain).
There's something so hilarious to me that you created one of the most imaginative, fascinating keyboard projects I've seen in about five years and you somehow DIDN'T expect the most lunatic fringe keyboard enthusiasts to show up at your door, salivating at the mere idea of it
pro tip! You can use a sacrificial WS2812 or whatever LED you're using as a sacrificial LED by powering it through a diode, lowering the source voltage to low enough to work with 3.3v logic and it will step up the logic signal to its source voltage which will work for the second LED that is powered off 5V
This is a good tip, and substantially simpler than using a full-fledged "proper" level-shifter especially because it removes an entire item from your bill-of-materials if you're carrying the LEDs anyway.
@@siberx4 But on the other hand who doesn't have a baggie of BSS138 or similar smol MOSFETs to implement a really simple level shifter? I don't believe these LEDs necessarily deserve something better.
@@SianaGearz The communication works @800kHz, it's not that simple to make a mosfet + 2 resistors shifter that will keep up
@@ZozoleonLego This isn't quite a hard requirement, all phases except T0H can be timestretched. There is inherent asymmetry in the single fet level shifter, so you can actually make fairly short pulses, they'll just be very distorted, which given lax requirements on other phases is fine. Besides you can fudge the resistor values for harder pullup and faster response.
In i2c use, 400KHz with 10k resistors still usually works, and it can be stretched to 800KHz, and that's a much more fragile protocol.
@@ZozoleonLego when I was making esp8266-based twinkly copy (gyvertwink in github), I ended up driving si2302 (a2shb) gate directly from gpio pin and it worked (5V is connected to source through 1k resistor and drain is connected directly to the string).
Should be noted that AFAIK ESP drives gpio with rather powerful push-pull, and I had to downgrade firmware version to 2.7.4 due to some interruption weirdness. So that might not work on STM or AVR chips

Nothing like the Kyria in design or execution; I would want traditional keyboard building with case, foam(s), pcb, plate(s) ... but split ergo.
I'd really like it to be Hot swap PCB out the box.

I'm typing on a Maja v2 to see an example of what kind of "build" I'm keen for.
Honestly I absolutely love these videos, the writing, pacing, humour and just the process itself are incredible to view. And with the amount of helpful information you sprinkle in at every step, it’s been actually affecting how I view my own projects in the art world.
Just last trimester at uni I started planning my projects with a minimum viable deliverable in mind, and it worked wonders. Got the entire project done in one fourth the time I usually do and had plenty of time to polish.
Gonna enjoy watching this another ten times whilst on public transport and noting down helpful tips for myself!
I will wait until this turns into actual easly purchesable product. The fact this thing gets so much better with each iteration makes waiting even more worth it
it probably never will its purpose is to be a opensource diy project to build yourself the best you might see is someone might do small buy orders for hand builds but that will just be like the pi boy community where a 120 dollar project costs 500 dollars if you want someone else to build it cause it takes so many hours of labour to hand assemble
@@Sarge92 It's utterly commendable that this is going completely open source, it would be nice to buy the entire kit in one bundle though, not everyone has a 3d printer etc.
@@tezinho81 Bought a 3d printer 2 years ago (280$ - Sovol SV01). My main goal was to build a keyboard. I found it better to spend on a printer that allows me to iteratively improve the design than to drown the money for laser cutting. In addition to the keyboard, I printed a lot of everyday things. It was worth it.

the upside of being opensource is people can do things like that and help everyone out
its just like how some opensource 3d printers need a 3d printer for its parts but theres communities who offer the parts kits for them so you can get someone else to 3d print them
the discord will be the best place to checkout for that as im sure people will be more than happy to print you the parts you need for cost of materials plus maybe a couple dollars to cover there time and effort
the retropie handhelds do this all the time as well infact often even offer to source all the parts for you and sell them as a complete ready to build bundle
@@Sarge92 yeah I also ment something like what Terry is talking about. I don't expect this keyboard to ever be just sold, but I think it's pretty realistic to think that at some point this project will reach the point where everything is properly thought out and designed. After that Zack could sell 3d printed parts, boards, etc. What I think of is more of an accessible way to purchase parts wich you could use to assemble whatever variation of this keyboard you desire.

This project is getting closer and closer to its finale and I can't wait to see the end product. So far this is a stellar keyboard, but one possible suggestion for this revision specifically would be to add magnets to the bottom as well to keep the two sides more stable.

I can't tell you how excited I am for this keyboard. Excited enough to stave off buying ones from big or new companies that try to rush what you're doing to get it out first, even if it means dealing with the headache of soldering it myself and trying to learn any coding or whatever I might be to get it how I want. But you are, one episode at a time, making my "no compromises" dreams come true.
Okay but this would be my dream projects if I could install enough faders and a custom designed key layout so it could be a good MA2/MA3 control surface or audio console controller!
If you dont know already checkout midicraft it's a guy from Germany who builds high quality controllers with really nice clicky keys and he is also an ma2 operator so the layout works really well for it
I somehow stumbled on this video and it's amazing. Back in the day I use to game on the Merc/Steel Series keyboard, and it unfortunately got discontinued. Gaming has not been the same without that gamepad for me and just about everyone who used it. I stumbled on the Keyboard community and have been hooked ever since. I've been thinking how amazing it would be to make a mechanical version of the game pad, and the search was on. I see a lot of interest, and making the PCB is where it tends to die down. Most of this video might as well be in another language because I have zero knowledge and most of what you do, but it does give me the hope to try and slowly learn it. If anything, I want to build this amazing board! You have a new fan!

This looks like an interesting little project. I have to say I like the customization options. And being able to set this up as a split with a 3 button trackpoint would be killer.
Is there a supplier of those god tier audio sliders that move by themselves? I would love to see those integrated into a module.

alternatively you can get a floppy disk reader stepper motor and tie it to the slider, and use the arduino and an uln2003 as the driver.
you can also use a tiny motor and a smooth round belt, it should be enough to make the potentiometer slide, but it will also slip if you move the potentiometer.
or you could pay 30 bucks for 2 motorized faders, which isn't that much if you've got disposable income, and will save you at least a few hours.

Let me start off by saying this is an awesome project and that I keep being amazed by the level of creativity and cleverness that goes into any of the builds you share with us.
I understand that you have done your market research and ultimately need to sell a product, and I am super excited to see you aiming for a commercial release.
That being said, I still wanted to mention that I am very sad seeing the switch from north to south-facing LEDs. I was looking at a bunch of mechanical keyboards recently and north-facing LEDs are close to impossible to find for more 'sophisticated' keyboards, which is why I had high hopes for this project. I have done some tests myself by mounting shine-through key-caps upside down on my existing hardware and at least in my opinion there is so little light reaching the shine-through legend that there is no point in having the LEDs at all. (Which is frustrating given that this design constraint is chosen for the reasons you explained in the video)
However, with you being the awesome cyborg you are and this being an open source effort there is still the option that someone creates a north-facing spin-off at some point in time, so I'm still excited to see where you take this (as with any other project) even though this keyboard is unfortunately not for me (at least for now).
I still think you are on the right track harnessing the (buying) power of the mechanical keyboard elites, I'm grateful that we get to watch along the ride and I whish you the best of luck going forward! Keep it up!
if you are still looking for a good keyset for this board, there is a company that makes clear key caps, the caps are available on amazon, and they have great shinethrough even with south facing leds.

Just wanted to say, keep doin what you're doin. I found you're channel while looking for info on my new (at the time) hobby, mechanical keyboard building. Before your video, I always thought 3d printing, coding, programming, and soldering/wiring electronics were all cool skills; I never thought of putting them all together for hobby builds.
Now, all my free time is spent either soldering, tinkering, refining and refreshing my knowledge of Python (which led to installing Linux on an old AW15r2) or thinking about the next project... And I thank you for it.
Keyboard enthusiast here waiting over 70 weeks for my keycaps now. The pain is real.
For me, the cherry profile is not much about nostalgia but much more about feel. OEM is much harder to type on for me. You'd think after years of cheap keyboards with OEM profile caps I'd be better with that, but no.
And of course, the beautiful color ways on offer do a lot for the eye.
LEDs are still fun to toy around with to display information directly on the keyboard, or to play snake directly on the board, but I can live without them much more easily than with a north facing board. :)
I could really feel the satisfaction you had making so much progress on this project, it really showed in the level of word play on show. A step beyond the usual, IMO.
Bit of a shame that you couldn't make QMK work for you, I love the stuff. Being able to change keymaps without compiling is usually handled through VIA or VIAL. But I guess your project is so far gone from sanity that a lot of the conventions QMK is built on may end up being a problem for you.
EDIT: Typed that before I heard your "Keyboard ASMR". That's... crunchy. But I'm also a clicky hater so what do I know.

I think a next round request for module ideas will end up with more interesting choices. Most folks are going to want the functional items first and folks can already picture what they can do with rotary encoders, sliders, screens, and touch sensors.

That's just an amazing project, I just tried to make my first attempt into macropads and made a video Tutorial, but this projects is way steps even for keyboards on amazon or other stores.
First there is Fusion 360 ad, and at 16:57 Fusion completely craps itself trying to handle a project with several buttons. Zack's irony is always top notch.

I got an idea for printing circuit boards. literaly just print them with a FDM printer, but use soldering tin instead of pla. leadfree solder melts at around 217°C wich is very easy to reach for most 3d Printers, maybe tune down the feed rate and layer hight and use a glass bed but i think it should work. (havent tried it myself, dont want to ruin my own 3d printer, IF it doesnt work)

I'm still on my first mechanical keyboard, which was the least expensive one I could find that didn't have 50% of the reviews saying it unleashed the nine plagues of Egypt when they opened the box, and I have an understanding of electronics rudimentary enough that I roughly catch the gist of 75% of what's said. I still watch every video! The detail and enthusiasm makes everything interesting, even if I don't fully grasp it.

Hey, just wanted to say your earlier video (where you 3D-print and hand-wire a Dactyl Manuform) got me interested in custom ergonomic mechanical keyboards a bit over a year ago. Soldered a couple of kits (a Pancake and a Corne), and now I'm taking my first baby steps in KiCAD designing my own PCBs :O
Somehow I neglected to subscribe to your channel at the time, so I just saw this video. You do a great job explaining your mistakes and demystifying the design process. I tend to procrastinate out of frustration & perfectionism, and sometimes need reminding that it's OK to bodge sometimes.

I'm actually working on a modular keypad that runs off a single microcontroller (modules got too expensive otherwise). I'm not sure how adaptable it is to bigger keyboards, but if you ever need to make a module without a microcontroller, you can make a microcontroller on your board emit a clock signal to the module(s). Put a counter on the module and attach it to a multiplexer that cycles through whatever outputs the module has. Connect them all to a single bus that goes out of the module and back into the microcontroller to get the output of the module. Then just program the controller so that it maps the current clock cycle and bus signal to an output that corresponds to the key mapping.
Additionally, if you want multiple modules, you can attach a D latch to the module that indicates control over the bus. Only allow the module to output to the bus when the latch is high, and send a signal to the next module when the current module is done outputting to the bus.
Theres a couple drawback with this approach, one being that the microcontroller somehow needs to identify which modules are attached to the bus. I'm guessing you could give each module a number that it outputs on the bus before anything else (which would also make it hotswappable, which is cool). Another one is that everything needs to be serialized over a single bus, meaning that adding too many (im pretty sure the number is somewhere around 1000 inputs) keys will cause a noticeable delay, which is why this might not work for very big modules.

I just found out about this, but man you already sold me and I really want this now. All of these modules are so sick and it's amazing how compact and portable it is. This would be perfect to replace my keyboard with.
Maybe it would be possible to mod the chassis/design in order for it to support hinges so you can fold both halves up so you can easily toss it in your bag. I think it would work perfectly with the magnetic connector design.
I hope it will be easy to get hands on all the parts required.

I'm so excited for this to be my first custom keyboard. Only thing I would like is bluetooth support, I know it's not an important feature to most people in the mechanical keyboard community but if I make my own keyboard I would love to be able to use it easily with many of my devices. I like the modular part. Being able to switch from display to knobs and slider can be really usefull for sound editor who also want to use their keyboard for leisure activities.
Unfortunatly, I'm already designing my own split keeb and this is way out of my aeea of ewpertise (aka searching online and ripping other open source project dor schematics)

I have been watching these videos of the MiRage series and at first wasn't really caring about the earlier revisions. but this mk3 makes me want to build it for sure would love to get my hands on a board or two.... or three

just am wondering now if (within our broader keyboards communities)... something similar to this can also be done with those new CHERRY MX Ultra Low Profile switches. which are starting to appear now on some 2022+ laptops. and also they are the ones used on the corsair k100 air... presumably it would need a whole lot of iterative work (like your project here has already been, but starting from the beginning again). but to also find appropriate flat keycaps for example taken from a laptop keyboard. probably all too much work however i really appreciate these innovations and iterativve approach. it was beautifully presented, loved to follow along your process here
