"There are no boring places, only boring people." We especially need people to document where they live to fight National Geographic shooters and the idea that "professionals" know a place better than the people who actually live there.
"embrace where you live" truer words were never spoken. I live in a pretty boring city imo, but some of my favorite photos have been taken where I live. There are cool photos to take everywhere in the world. You just have to open your eyes
Absolutely agree, 90% of movies are probably set in New York or LA, even people halfway around the world know what they look like. We need to tell more stories and showcase life in the rest of the world.
moved to NYC a few years ago for work and to take wayyy more street photos - now I find myself wanting to go back home (i.e. the middle of nowhere) to make my videos/photos. point of this message - the grass is always greener
I forgot how much I love your videos, I forgot how much I love photography. I haven’t shot in like three or four months but I think I’m ready again. I’m only 6 minutes in and I’m ready to get out the house. Thank you.
Your videos always get me hyped to take more photos, man. Real good shit! One tip I have is if you're riding in someone's car or you're on a bus, take a note (paper or Google maps) if you see a cool spot and then come back. Sometimes I pass by places, and I might end up back there weeks later and be like "oh yeah, take that shot".
So many things I love about every Vuhlandes video: how inspiring they are, how beautiful the photos are, the cinematography, how down to earth and fair Vuhlandes' commentary on photography and photographic issues is. Thank you Vuhlandes!
Just started shooting 35mm film and taking baby steps by finding good light in my neighborhood (Houston suburbs). It's a cool challenge and helps me practice. Extra inspired to keep it up watching this.
So much good stuff in this video, both the photos and the discussion. 12:41 is an awesome example, I had to single it out - just a plain background and creative lighting coupled with a great pose.
haven't finished the vid yet (another banger) but this is actually something ive been thinking of a lot. i find myself jealous of where you get to take pictures vuh cause it looks so cool but i have to remember i only think it is that cool because it is different then where i grew up. thx for the vid king
I’ve been doing this around my suburb trying out new film recipes every day. Couple of good locations, I just need to bring a subject or have the courage to ask strangers for photos.
Feel blessed that I got to live in Shanghai for 5 years, it's freaking amazing for pictures and soon going back to London. but yeah, I definitely dig your photos in the more mundane locations like a side street or a field. Great work, Vuhlandes !
Thank you for the advice. I really appreciate it. I usually would like going downtown Detroit to take pictures. Maybe I didn't see the beauty in wear I live
Oh my goodness, I was just in Detroit for a brief work trip-unfortunately only had a couple quick hours the first night to take some photos(made it a point to bring my Contax 139Q). Wow Vuhlandes, you got an INCREDIBLE place to make your wonderful photos!
One beautiful thing about detroit is the architecture. Its beautiful, and you don't have to be downtown to take advantage of it. One tip that I like to do is.. if you turn on location on your iPhone for photos, it will tell you where you took a photo. so if you see a place you'd like to shoot, just snap a photo of the general area with your iPhone and you can return later with your other cameras, and you'll know exactly where its at.
yooo i was watching the beginning of the video & i was like wait holup are they shooting outside the DIA?? i got so excited lmao i never see detroit photographers on yt, thanks for making the content man 🙏🏼🙏🏼
This video couldn't come at a more perfect time, I really struggle finding interesting spots in a Swiss town that's just 100% gray and nowhere near any mountains or something so this vid is just perfect👍
great video man, one of my favorites that you've made. The images are fantastic, especially the ones on the steps. And i wholeheartedly agree about documenting real life in your local landscape. Anyone can take a cool photo of the golden gate bridge, but it takes hard work and talent to transform middle America into a beautiful landscape.
On the topic of the need for photos of different places, I think it's also important that those photos *come from* the people who actually are from there. I imagine people who aren't from the hood will never take as true and honest and representative a photo as somewhere *from* there. I think this is a universal idea, no matter where you live. Use what's inside of you to represent the places you know in ways others can't.
Yeah man sometimes you need to hear that because I live in Delray Beach Florida but I miss New York and I get bored a lot here doing street photography but I do have to mix it up.
Could you do a review for ilford xp2 super?!? I myself have had very surprising results when shooting that film. I got my favorite B&W shots with this film. Being a c41 film I was cautious at first, because I was told it might have a purple tint too it. but I shot at box speed (400) and it was great for me! Would be cool to hear your opinion on it!!!
I don't usually take portraits so I hunt for landscapes, cityscapes, interesting architecture, etc. Man, I used to think it was hard when I lived in a small city. Now I live in this woodsy suburb that's like roads and white people's houses surrounded by woods. Gotta spend 20 minutes of driving or an hour walking just to get out of it.
8:42 I did the same thing not too long ago, found a beautiful road inlined with the sunrise the photos were dope and I was taking some more when suddenly a fucking German Shepherd start barking and running at me and the mf was loose, when I tell you I never ran so fast in my entire life 😂😂 Tbh I was lucky to have reacted fast enough, I had a good lead on the dog and luckily there were many streets/alleys so I was able to lose him but shit that was both scary and rewarding at the same time, the pictures were dope too !
Hey vuh, you made a video on how you turned digital photos look like film but can you do one on video? I like how cinematic and filmy you make your intros
The timing for this video is crazy. Needed this😭
for real

I think about this alot. Well said!
walking around is underrated! even without a camera. it's important to notice things in life.
Vuhlandes out here spitting facts. I respect your perspective of embracing your location.
You don’t know how excited I get when you post!

Thank you for the actual tips, many photographers just flexing their gears
Didn't know much about Detroit (I'm from Europe) but every time I'm watching one of your videos, I find Michigan more and more interesting.
Woo hoo, Vuhlandes gave a shout out to my local lab! Love the work that Marco and the team do at FW Photo Lab.

I've been exploring using mood boards to collect images that inspire me. How do you collect & store your mood board images?
I use Milanote, Pinterest and some times I would create a little PDF using Adobe Illustrator. Hope that helps! :)
She ate ‼️‼️
