Great Champ story. There's a fantastic little micro RC Champ (15" wingspan) that runs about $90, including a radio, ready to fly out of the box. It flys beautifully in no wind, its one of my favorite all time flying experiences. I have ~4200 hours flying Fighters (which won't sound like a lot capncarl, but its a lot) and some in GA, but I didn't REALLY learn to fly until I mastered RC flying. So I highly recommend supplementing full scale flying with RC flying. Its more than a sim, its actual flying, just from a different perspective. That perspective teaches you more in some respects, and less in others, but all types of flying is valuable. The kicker is you can rack up flying hours fast and cheap and, at least to me, the endless RC laboratory is every bit as fun and rewarding. Point is, flying a little micro Champ on a football field, park, or cul-de-sac before the wind picks up, is time well spent learning to make any airplane dance. Just a thought for those who want to become better pilots, faster, or others who may not have the means to break into full scale flight.
@@1capcarl It looks discontinued for the larger 24" wingspan Hobbyzone HBZ44000. Bummer, the Champ was perfect. I'm sure the Cub is great too. The E-Flite 15" PT-17 is a beautiful flying RC trainer, too. These micro airplanes weigh-in at a couple of ounces, so they carry no energy and are very low risk.

Carl, it seems like sacrilege to let Piper fly a Cessna.:-) I fly a Piper Colt with a tailwheel conversion and it is a nice bird. Your story about Culver Military Academy caught my attention. In the 90's I lived on Lake Latonka which was about mid-way between Culver and Plymouth, IN. My son also attended the summer camp there when he was a teen and now lives in Rochester, IN so I get back to that area occasionally. It is a pretty campus. I assume there is no flight training there now but looking at the satellite view it seems they still maintain the runways (well, at least they cut the grass). Do you have any history you can share about when the flying stopped there?
Ken, I heard a rumor that they had an accident that caused them to decide to not continue to do flight instruction. There is a local FBO that has taken over training some of their students.

@@1capcarl Ok, cool, that is a sensible reference for a quick glance at the airspeed indicator. I wouldn't had said the top, because the top of the arc to me would be the faster speeds. But I guess the slower speeds in this case physically is at the top of the dial. Also I did not guess that "70" is in the lower green range of a C182. Is it 70 knots or mph? All in all I got curious if maybe you had an angle of attack indicator or something like that as additional speed guidance :-)

@@1capcarl Thanks
Capt Carl, N26PL is in Santa Maria for some paint work. I'm flying into Burbank Sunday or Monday. Can I get a ride to Santa Maria for expenses?
Cheers, Scott
Scott, I want to visit their paint shop too. cwatts2955@aol.com
@@1capcarl My friends give Theresa high marks. I just had the upper wings and touch ups done on the Beech. She wanted 42K for a full paint...maybe restore it in a few years. It still looks good.
I'm in SC, flying back Monday I think. If it works out great, if not I'll get there. More likely a Tuesday event. You going to Oshkosh?
cheers,
Scott
Pat the unsung hero! Great job you guys👍👍
He does amazing work
I noticed 2 hands on yoke during landing. Were you trimmed for landing?
Maybe not enough ! Good point !
There’s something strange about a woman named piper flying a Cessna 😂 nice video!😜
I know!
Small world! Culver is 20 min away. I can't tell you how many times I've flown around Maxinkuckee.
It was so much fun working there.
@@1capcarl unfortunately they shut the CMA aviation program down years ago after an accident. One of my old bosses though actually started a flight school about 15 minutes north of the lake in Plymouth that is now tied into CMA and several local high schools.
Who knows, maybe one day when I'm close to retirement I'll show up to work and Piper will be my FO. You know if she pursues that route she's going to run in to fellow aviators who saw these videos and the give away is going to be when they let a "Pipie" slip out. "Gear up Pipie!"
That would be funny
Piper learning to fly in a Cessna. Just doesn't feel right 🙃
Ha !
I liked the touchdown. Another hi from Sao Paulo - Brazil. What degree did y get ?

@@1capcarl Cool
That story kept sounding like it was gonna have a punchline and nothing happened
Sorry Farris !
What's the music track you use?
Pat will answer that.
In Europe we say „ready for departure“

Looks awesome! cool story sounds like you we’re lucky on the telephone poles.. piper what are you going to school for.

she only flies to lunch haha
We eat first !
I think Piper said the approach speed was "top of the green", which instrument did that refer to?
Probably the green arc on the airspeed indicator
@@1capcarl Ok, cool, that is a sensible reference for a quick glance at the airspeed indicator.
I wouldn't had said the top, because the top of the arc to me would be the faster speeds. But I guess the slower speeds in this case physically is at the top of the dial. Also I did not guess that "70" is in the lower green range of a C182. Is it 70 knots or mph?
All in all I got curious if maybe you had an angle of attack indicator or something like that as additional speed guidance :-)
Clone Piper to save the West .
Yes !
