A year and a half later and the Bowflex 552's cost 80 buck more. The basic Powerblock set now cost about 120 bucks more. Fantastic. I picked the wrong time to try and get in shape.

I have had the same pair of Powerblocks (up to 90 lbs) since 2004 and still use them all the time. Best piece of workout equipment I ever bought. There is nothing wrong with them, so there's no reason to replace. Not much to break on them, simple design and easy to change weight.

I've had a set of powerblock elites with the expansion kits up to 90lbs for about 5 years now. I have used and continue to use the heck out of them and they've held up beautifully. There is a small adjustment to the different weight displacement compared to traditional DBs, but you adapt to that quickly. Awesome product and definitely worth the money for a garage gym enthusiasts!

I've had the Powerblocks for over a decade now, and they work great. However, if I were to do it over again, I'd just spend a bit more and get a few sets of rubber coated dumbells. Get something for light for side lateral raises, something medium for curls, and something heavier for bench. Maybe something really heavy for farmer's carry or goblet squats. That's just three or four sets, and when you out grow a weight you get something heavier. In a couple years you'll have a nice set that you've earned.
Every one of these options today look fantastic without a doubt. But for the record, I have had a set of Powerblocks since 2002 and they look and feel as good today as the day I got them.They have been heavily used in four different home gyms throughout the two decades. I have been very impressed and will never change them for anything else. Love your vids btw

I've had the Powerblocks for about 20 years now, and they are the best thing since sliced bread. Rock solid, easy to change weight. Perfect for a home gym, 5lbs-90lbs and expandable up to 130lbs each. Double handles on the back gives you options to add close grip exercises (overhead extensions, bent over rows, etc).
I've had the same set of detergent bottles filled with sand and water for 2 years now and i have to say they are great. It took a while to spend that much detergent but it was definitely worth the wait. I'm thinking of upgrading to cement filled detergent bottles now because i got a lot stronger and the sand ones are starting to feel a bit too light.
Iron Masters can go up to 180 pounds per dumbbell with the heavy handle kit and 165 pound expansions, so your not going to outgrow them, and you can actually drop them if needed. If your planning on doing a full body work with dumbbells ask yourself how much weight do you need to do shrugs, bent over rows, farmer carries etc. Don't base your purchase on how much you can curl. No matter what you want something you can set on your thigh while you can get into position, if you can't set it on you thigh you might as well go cheap with spin locks and if you want to give your ego a boost buy those plastic concrete weights so it looks like your lifting a lot which seems to bee the only benifit to the bowflex
Yup, the flat sides, compact size, durability, expandability, and overall feel makes the Ironmaster the top choice for me. Only area it lacks is the little bit of extra time it takes to change weights as compared to a selectable dumbell.
I've had both sets of Bowflex DB's for almost 15 years. I've never had any issues with a plate falling out, with the hand grips not feeling secure (mine have rubber on them) and the durability of either set. I can go from 5lbs to 90lbs in 2.5lb increments (using the offset method) with just 4 DB's. They have more than paid for themselves. I expect to have them for another 15 years as the mechanisms seem to be holding up as well as the day I got them.
Check out Average Joe Innovations if you want to upgrade the components of the Bowflex 552 or 1090, I cannot stress how well that guy makes components for them and he offers a different grip for the 1090 set that are far superior to the oem grip, seriously just check out his channel on RUclips and his website.

Everything was secure and in good shape. No weird smells. The weight changing mechanism is really smooth and straight forward. Changing weight is really fast and easy. Though the handle is plastic, I don't think it will be breaking anytime soon. So far pretty impressed after my first session with them. I was afraid they were going to be too wide at first, but I didn't have any issues with them while doing upright rows.
I've had the 552s for around 8 years and I'm a fan. I dont slam them around and they can be a little bulky for certain exercises but they give me the ability to do a lot more in the garage.
I’ve had the bow flex 52.5 since like 2009. I don’t toss them to the ground and they have never gave me a problem. Worth a Christmas/Bday present when I was a teen!
I’ve had both the BowFlex 552 and 1090 sets for over 16 years and they still work fine. The knob on one of them does not turn as smooth as it did when new. At that time, the Powerblox were my only other option and having my hand in a “cage” caused an issue when doing some exercises. But he is right, I wouldn’t want to drop the BowFlex!
I’ve been using the iron masters. They take up so little space in the home gym and can get so extremely heavy that it FAR outweighs the slow load time. I use them with the 120 pound extension kit. Saving up for the 165 pound extension kit for when I get a bit bigger. Definitely love how tight they can get and they feel exactly like a solid dumbbell. You can throw them at any weight on the ground and nothing will happen. I like using the quick adjust ones but it was just hard to justify because max weight on them was so low and they felt rickety with crap knurling. Dumbbell press (especially incline), shoulder press and rows are so incredibly nice to have very heavy weights for.

As an alternative to crying (I tried this myself, after my tear ducts wore out), you can cast your own plates from concrete, it's easier than it sounds and less of a hassle than trying to get buckets of sand to balance on your barbell.
One thing that is really nice about the PowerBlock system which is why I ended up with them as well is that they are very compact. You get a lot of weight (if you buy the additional stages) which is enough for most people to do even heavy lifts. If you don't happen to have a dedicated sport area/garage for your homegym and have to put your stuff somewhere else and get it out to train in your living room for example, then this is the best system I could find. You can get a PowerBlock-Barbell, which isn't super long and of course an olympic barbell is the better option, but only if you have the space! My powerblock barbell is under my bed and I already got the weights from the two dumbbells. It's perfect for me. You even can do cleans and snatches with them (which I was a bit frightened of at first haha). So if you got a dedicated room/garage: Oly-Bar and whatever barbell is compatible might be the better choice. But if you are looking for a minimum space version the powerblock system is the best! (if you want to do classic bodybuilding exercises, otherwise bodyweight or elastic bands, etc. can be great absolute minimum homegym alternatives). Anyhow, thank you for your video! Don't know why you bought ALL that stuff but everybody needs a hobby I guess haha :-)
Waited for 1 year for the IRONMASTER cause they were always sold out and I gotta say l. Worth the wait! They are amazing. The fact that they are square and don’t roll around it’s an aspect that you didn’t think about and it’s essential in Home gyms where if a normal dumber rolls off into the distance can go against furniture. They also the most compact of them all
Ironmaster adjustable dumbbells are the best, period. Built like a tank and will last forever. I got mine used many years ago and they had a little wear and tear on them. This past summer, I took all the weights to the garage, wirebrushed them, and spray painted them black. They look better than new now! I've told my wife, if I ever come home from work and the house is on fire, I'm running in to get her and the kids. Then when they are safe, I'm running back in to get my Ironmaster dumbbells.
I’ve had the Ironmasters and the Powerblocks. If you’re making precision weight adjustments that aren’t flat 10-15lbs jumps, they take about the same time to change since you have to take the blocks out and fiddle with the adder weights. The main issue with Ironmasters as far as change speed goes is actually the stand. If the plates are stored on something more like a rod you’d see traditional weight plates on, they’re effortless to pick up and put on. Older models from other brands had stands that let you do similar things. Lacking that and you’re doing mini wrist curls. Still love mine tremendously more than the Powerblocks I had, and the Ironmasters go to 165, not 120. Their kettlebell handle that goes with them is also wonderful, as is their general ecosystem.
That's a lie. I can change my powerblocks adder weights and all in around 5 seconds per dumbbell. Your not changing all 4 sides or your ironmaster in 10 seconds unless you're flash.

@@powerbar8991 changing all 4 sides is doable in 10 seconds. i own a iron master set + 160lbs extension. During between sets, my iron masters are laid flat on the floor with extra weight plates near by ready to add or remove from the dumbbell. you twist each side of the bolts a quarter turn in opposite directions to unbolt both sides in 1 simple movement and add plates or remove plates for the weight you want then screw them bolts back on. The small detail the video doesn't show is the screws have a straight smooth groove on them saving time on screwing on and off the bolts. You simply slide the bolts all the way in where the bolt touches the plates (with the help of the smooth straight groove) and make a quarter/half turn on the bolt to securely tighten the plates in place.
If this is the rexans, you have the best set Powerblock ever made. The welds are so precise and perfect. I would trade my new Sport EXP 90lb set and cash for this if one popped up locally

If you go Powerblocks you have to get the steel ones. I got the Eiltes up to 70 LBS and doubt they'll ever break. You can just weld them if you ever break something.
Don’t forget the added bonus that powerblocks can be put on kettle bell handles, straight bar and EZ curl bar. I find that a super amazing bonus feature.
I lucked out. About a month or two before the pandemic kicked in, I got a urethane Powerblock set from a guy off Craigslist. I bought the expansions, straight bar, and kettlebell attachments from Powerblock and then BAM, everyplace sold out everywhere! I sold my old set of PBs (had em for over 20 years) to a desperate lifter, more than reimbursing me for the cost of all my new PB equipment.
I've had Powerblocks for years. The main reason I love them so much is because I take them with me to and from the fire station when I'm working and I don't have to worry about those stupid base plates. They just load and go as one unit.

I actually just sold my Ironmaster set and got a set of Powerblocks Pro. The convenience of the speedy weight changes in Powerblocks won me over, but it’s hard to go wrong with either one. The Ironmasters held their value so well, I actually sold them for more than I paid for them.
Powerblocks look and feel weird. The best setup in my opinion is two Ironmaster dumbbell sets. One for lower weights and one for higher weights. It reduces weight changes drastically.

I have the bowflex 552s, bought them because they were on sale for the same price as the no-name brand alternative. They are good - I'm happy with them. I don't regret the purchase. Here are some of my opinions/gripes after 3 years use (not super heavy use mind - I do seasonal bush work so I don't use them 6 months a year) They tend to get stuck somewhat regularly, like they don't sit properly in the holder - requiring you to put your foot on the holder pull the dumbells out and re-seat them. Not a deal breaker, just an annoyance. The first time it happened it took me a good 15 minutes to figure out - but after that it's always been a super easy fix. (when they get stuck they look like they are properly seated, but the weight adjustment will be locked out and when you pick them up the base will come with them) They are wider than regular dumbells, which is often an annoyance - but also part of the territory of adjustables, so not necessarily a mark against them. The plasticness of them kinda weirds me out - I've been careful never to drop them or abuse them, and they've held up flawlessly. But I always have to take the conscious effort to gently put them in the holders. (I don't know how durability actually is - they've held up flawlessly, but I've never abused them) I wish I could confidently be a bit rougher with them like I could regular dumbells. Now for the good At the price I got them, they are a great value vs a regular dumbell set. They adjust really easily - this is huge. I can plop them down and have both adjusted to a new weight in under 30 seconds - fantastic when switching quickly between different workouts. I'll change them 10+ times a workout, so that convenience is great. From my experience: I would probably recommend them to someone who is more careful with their stuff and is fine with the 52lb limit (the average person). If you are super aggressive in your workouts, I could definitely see durability being an issue.
I bought a pair of 90 lb PowerBlocks second-hand ten years ago and they are absolutely bulletproof. I agree that they do feel different than a standard dumbbell but in some ways the differences are good. flipping them over gives two handles, which opens up options for things like overhead presses and such.
I bought a set of Ironmasters and then got the heavy handle kit. Brings these bad boys from up to 75 pounds each to 90 pounds. Going to buy the 120 pound expansion kit soon ( which is really 135 pounds with the 15 pound heavy handle kit). Fantastic review. I love adjustable dumbbells.
In June 2023 the bowflex 552 has now gone up to $430 for 2, but I bought just 1 at Walmart for $220 thinking that I was getting the pair for 1/2 price. Nope....its just 1- 52.5lb dumbbell all by itself. At the store that had the pair for $430( 80 dollars inflation in just 2 yrs), they also sell the powerblock sportblock exp for $409 or....the pro version for $509 plus available the stage 2 addon for 140 additional.
I purchased the power block stage 3 dumbbells when they first came out probably 30 years ago and have used them often to this day. I think they were about the same price. Love them.
Awesome selection! For an investment Powerblock sounds like the best opton, a shame it doesn't look like a regular dumbbell and might feel off on some moves. Nuobell looks great but the durability is questionable with all the plastic. Tradeoffs are expected, just gotta have the budget. Thanks Coop!
just checked out the nuobells page and it feels like every 5th review has a complaint about them breaking, the poor shipping, or meh customer service. they look slick and i was hoping they were the answer but i'm gonna go with something else i think.
I used to work as a travel nurse, moving every 3-6 months. Bought a set of Powerblocks and used em for 20 years. Finally sold em, but only cause I picked up a newer set with the straight bar attachment. Can't recommend em enough. After twenty years, my selector pins did break, but I was able to get replacements from Powerblock cheaply and without any problem.
I've used the Powerblocks back in the day and they felt awkward while using. I've used the BowFlex select tech 552 in my home gym for 6 years and they still work well for me. I bought them off craigslist with the stand for $250 in great condition. The only downside is it's not enough weight. Great review though.
Feel like the bow flex wouldn't even last me 2 year considering all the plastic it uses. I bought a Chinese knockoff Bowflex (one that goes up to 90lbs) and it's falling apart on me and not even a year use. Granted I can be pretty careless with em. The build looks very similar to that of the bowflex

I bought these a few years ago, they are durable, cost effective, and at 90 pounds per hand they provide great growth potential for bicep and back development. Plus, they are fairly quick to change out compared to some of the more expensive options in the form of other brands.

I have the Ironmaster's for a years now. they actually go up 165 not 120. Also, I lay them flat on the floor and that way you can unlock-lock both sides at the same time saving you a few seconds for sure rather than do 1 side and then flipping it around.
good luck getting the ironmaster. Basically like winning the lotto and if you want to go heavier than 75 you have to win the lotto again for the add-on.
Thanks Coop for your brilliant video always! I’d also take increments into consideration especially for small framed female lifters. For example when I do DB press, a 2.5kg is just too big a jump, so in this case iron master is a perfect solution as it’d allow me to even do 2.5lb(about 1.1kg) jump.
I actually have commented in one of Coops other videos about things I don't like about Iron Masters. I've owned a set for maybe 6 years. The biggest issue is indeed how slow they are to change, but aside from that I have several other complaints: 1) First off, they don't lock very well at low weight. I'm talking in the range of 10-17.5 lbs...there just doesn't seem to be enough width in the 2.5 lbs plates to really lock the screws down. 2) Also, the fact that they only sell 5 lbs and 2.5 lb plates (and 22.5 lbs plates if you look at their kettlebell section) is annoying. 3) The handles are nice, but they are a little too long for perfect comfort. As Coop mentioned previously, the length is probably just to accommodate a longer screw inside the handle. But it does make the weights a little hard to balance if you don't grab them symmetrically right off the bat. 4) Finally, mine have rusted quite a bit and the paint is flecking off the plates pretty badly...such that I've had to sand them a bit so I don't have stuff falling into my eyes when I am doing dumbbell bench press. All that being said, when they are properly locked down they are definitely solid and lend themselves well to pretty much any exercise you would want to do with a dumbbell. I'd love it if Iron Master would sell other plate sizes, and figure a way to shorten the handle by maybe 1 inch and if they could figure out how to make the screws lock as well at low weight as they do at the higher ranges.

I love mine, too. Purchased before the oa pandemic. Got the standard 75lb dumbell set, the 120lb expansion kit, and an extra set of dumbell handles. That way you can keep 1 set heavy and another set light to alternate between exercises. Right now they're having lottery entries just to buy their dumbells, though.
you've got block type dumbbell (powerblock), dial type (bowflex, mx) and twist type (nuobell), but you don't have glide type (e.g. IRONBEAST, I think NordicTrack is also of this type ). I would like to see a review of the glide type. Especially comparison glide vs twist type as those two are the quickest in terms of changing the weight. edit. NordicTrack review would also be appreciated
Great video. I agree, I have the Powerblocks up to 90 lbs. After a while you adjust to the feel of them, and it’s the gym dumbbells start to feel weird.
AtivaFit is what I use. Don't drop them, but they change super quick (looks faster than the Nuo Bells), and they go from 11 to 71.5lbs in 5.5 lb increments. I got them at $400 for the pair 2 years ago and couldn't be happier with the purchase.
Gungnir loadable handles deserve more attention in this review, as they are nicer than the Rogues and have built in collars. Way nicer to use than having to put 4 collars on each time with a traditional loadable DB.
@@brianthompson5672 Rogue and Coop have a cozy relationship, but it doesn't reflect well on him that he just said Rogue's are the best when there are dozens very similar to Rogue's and non like Gungnir's.
@@dlroto Not as pricey when one considered that 2 sets of very good collars aren't required that would otherwise be necessary with any other set of loadable DBs.
@@CaptCanuck4444 I think he weighed the lifetime warranty and build/material quality high on the DB-15s to place them over Titan and other alternatives. I agree that I would recommend Gungnir over Rogue for the high end Olympic loadable handles unless you have really thick plates and need more loadable sleeve space.

Got my power blocks 15 years ago… used… they’re still the best dumbbell I’ve used. They’re the concept 2 of dumbbells… they just work reliably, forever.
Ive had my bowflex 1090s for almost a decade. Was disappointed you rated them so low. Ive used them thousands of times and they still are in excellent condition. Yes they are a bit bulky compared to standard dumbells but im able to do any exercise i can comfortably. The powerblocks seem difficult and confusing to use, being that you have to use color coding and extra stuff to adjust; whereas the bowflex you don't have to think, you just turn the dial and boom. I highly recommend the bowflex 1090.
I have had a set of 1090s for a year and I love them I have always said if you can’t control your weight enough to set it down then you shouldn’t be lifting it
I think I've had the Bowflex 552s like 4 years? Love them! Nothing broken yet. I do wish the weight was a little more compact. Sometimes they feel a bit long. My hammer curls kinda bump my shoulders for instance. But overall, great product.

I had been waiting for the powerblock to come back in stock and they are today just as I'm watching this video! They're now $329 though. Can't wait to get them.
Excellent video on the shortcomings of many of the dumbbells. The first set of Ironmaster's purchased should be the 75 lb. set with the stand. Next upgrade is to 120 lbs. and the final upgrade is to 165 lbs. Ironmaster's "heavy handle kit" that secures on the inside of the handles adds another 15 lbs. which would take it max to 180 lbs. Ironmaster also offers "micro plates" that allow 2.5 lb. increments in weight. Ironmaster's makes kettlebell handles that use the plates of their dumbbell sets! There is a reason why Lee Priest was hired to demonstrate Ironmaster--he probably got all their "stuff" for free as a bonus too! Powerblock now offers a "Commercial Pro Series" available in 125 lbs. and 175 lbs. I don't like having my hands inside the Powerblocks. I have had shoulder tendon or ligament injuries and my concern would be being able to quickly drop a Powerblock with my hand inside it. I guess I'm wimping out on that. A friend who sells used equipment had a set of 90's he had acquired. I stopped by his shop, saw them and I picked one up and curled it. He looked at me and I at him. WTF! In his eyes he is saying I know your strong but this is ridiculous. I was at the time using 70 lb. dumbbells for standing dumbbell curls. It seems that my habit of also curing my wrist when doing curls brought the rounded, cushioned part of the upside of the Powerblock to rest on my forearm just above my wrist giving me a fulcrum I suppose. I didn't know about the "BAADASS" handles. That is some valuable info especially as there isn't the negative of a bar protruding from the plates. It isn't only ergonomics for those doing dumbbell bench presses who rest the dumbbell on their knees that isn't comfortable. Best short presentation I've seen. Covered about anything worth spending money on.
Really helped me scope my search and opened my eyes to newer products. Loved the reviews and ended up going with the Powerblock Pro EXP based on this video. Really happy with the decision. Thank you!
Super helpful. Thanks for buying all these so I don't have to. I had pretty much decided on IronMaster for my heavy lifting already but it was nice to have that choice confirmed. I don't love that it takes so long to change the weight but heavy lifting requires longer rests anyway so it's not too big of a deal when the other features are considered, like the all-metal construction and the fact that they can go up to 165 now with add-ons, whereas other selectable weight dumbbells aren't expandable if you want to move up to heavier weights eventually. So it's like buying weights in installments.

I think the biggest thing when looking for adjusting bells, it really comes down to personal preference, how important is it to have the feel of a real dumbbell vs the ability to change them over quickly etc. Awesome vid as always coop 👌👍
Hands down, the Power Blocks are the best adjustable dumbbells on the market. I’ve had my set, that ranges from 5-125lbs for well over 20+ years without any problems. I would never consider selling them! Best piece of exercise equipment I’ve ever purchased. Love them!

A year and a half later and the Bowflex 552's cost 80 buck more. The basic Powerblock set now cost about 120 bucks more. Fantastic. I picked the wrong time to try and get in shape.

I have had the same pair of Powerblocks (up to 90 lbs) since 2004 and still use them all the time. Best piece of workout equipment I ever bought. There is nothing wrong with them, so there's no reason to replace. Not much to break on them, simple design and easy to change weight.

I've had a set of powerblock elites with the expansion kits up to 90lbs for about 5 years now. I have used and continue to use the heck out of them and they've held up beautifully. There is a small adjustment to the different weight displacement compared to traditional DBs, but you adapt to that quickly. Awesome product and definitely worth the money for a garage gym enthusiasts!

I've had the Powerblocks for over a decade now, and they work great. However, if I were to do it over again, I'd just spend a bit more and get a few sets of rubber coated dumbells. Get something for light for side lateral raises, something medium for curls, and something heavier for bench. Maybe something really heavy for farmer's carry or goblet squats. That's just three or four sets, and when you out grow a weight you get something heavier. In a couple years you'll have a nice set that you've earned.
Every one of these options today look fantastic without a doubt. But for the record, I have had a set of Powerblocks since 2002 and they look and feel as good today as the day I got them.They have been heavily used in four different home gyms throughout the two decades. I have been very impressed and will never change them for anything else. Love your vids btw

I've had the Powerblocks for about 20 years now, and they are the best thing since sliced bread. Rock solid, easy to change weight. Perfect for a home gym, 5lbs-90lbs and expandable up to 130lbs each. Double handles on the back gives you options to add close grip exercises (overhead extensions, bent over rows, etc).
I have been using my Powerblocks for close to twenty years. They are durable, easily adjustable and heavy enough.
I've had the same set of detergent bottles filled with sand and water for 2 years now and i have to say they are great. It took a while to spend that much detergent but it was definitely worth the wait. I'm thinking of upgrading to cement filled detergent bottles now because i got a lot stronger and the sand ones are starting to feel a bit too light.
Iron Masters can go up to 180 pounds per dumbbell with the heavy handle kit and 165 pound expansions, so your not going to outgrow them, and you can actually drop them if needed. If your planning on doing a full body work with dumbbells ask yourself how much weight do you need to do shrugs, bent over rows, farmer carries etc. Don't base your purchase on how much you can curl. No matter what you want something you can set on your thigh while you can get into position, if you can't set it on you thigh you might as well go cheap with spin locks and if you want to give your ego a boost buy those plastic concrete weights so it looks like your lifting a lot which seems to bee the only benifit to the bowflex

Yup, the flat sides, compact size, durability, expandability, and overall feel makes the Ironmaster the top choice for me. Only area it lacks is the little bit of extra time it takes to change weights as compared to a selectable dumbell.
I've had both sets of Bowflex DB's for almost 15 years. I've never had any issues with a plate falling out, with the hand grips not feeling secure (mine have rubber on them) and the durability of either set. I can go from 5lbs to 90lbs in 2.5lb increments (using the offset method) with just 4 DB's. They have more than paid for themselves. I expect to have them for another 15 years as the mechanisms seem to be holding up as well as the day I got them.
Check out Average Joe Innovations if you want to upgrade the components of the Bowflex 552 or 1090, I cannot stress how well that guy makes components for them and he offers a different grip for the 1090 set that are far superior to the oem grip, seriously just check out his channel on RUclips and his website.
2 friends of mine still have theirs and it's been more than 5 years. They are pricey but if you take care of them, they take care of you.

Everything was secure and in good shape. No weird smells. The weight changing mechanism is really smooth and straight forward. Changing weight is really fast and easy. Though the handle is plastic, I don't think it will be breaking anytime soon. So far pretty impressed after my first session with them. I was afraid they were going to be too wide at first, but I didn't have any issues with them while doing upright rows.
I've had the 552s for around 8 years and I'm a fan. I dont slam them around and they can be a little bulky for certain exercises but they give me the ability to do a lot more in the garage.

I’ve had both the BowFlex 552 and 1090 sets for over 16 years and they still work fine. The knob on one of them does not turn as smooth as it did when new. At that time, the Powerblox were my only other option and having my hand in a “cage” caused an issue when doing some exercises. But he is right, I wouldn’t want to drop the BowFlex!
I’ve been using the iron masters. They take up so little space in the home gym and can get so extremely heavy that it FAR outweighs the slow load time. I use them with the 120 pound extension kit. Saving up for the 165 pound extension kit for when I get a bit bigger. Definitely love how tight they can get and they feel exactly like a solid dumbbell. You can throw them at any weight on the ground and nothing will happen. I like using the quick adjust ones but it was just hard to justify because max weight on them was so low and they felt rickety with crap knurling.
Dumbbell press (especially incline), shoulder press and rows are so incredibly nice to have very heavy weights for.

As an alternative to crying (I tried this myself, after my tear ducts wore out), you can cast your own plates from concrete, it's easier than it sounds and less of a hassle than trying to get buckets of sand to balance on your barbell.

One thing that is really nice about the PowerBlock system which is why I ended up with them as well is that they are very compact. You get a lot of weight (if you buy the additional stages) which is enough for most people to do even heavy lifts. If you don't happen to have a dedicated sport area/garage for your homegym and have to put your stuff somewhere else and get it out to train in your living room for example, then this is the best system I could find. You can get a PowerBlock-Barbell, which isn't super long and of course an olympic barbell is the better option, but only if you have the space! My powerblock barbell is under my bed and I already got the weights from the two dumbbells. It's perfect for me. You even can do cleans and snatches with them (which I was a bit frightened of at first haha).
So if you got a dedicated room/garage: Oly-Bar and whatever barbell is compatible might be the better choice.
But if you are looking for a minimum space version the powerblock system is the best! (if you want to do classic bodybuilding exercises, otherwise bodyweight or elastic bands, etc. can be great absolute minimum homegym alternatives).

Waited for 1 year for the IRONMASTER cause they were always sold out and I gotta say l. Worth the wait! They are amazing. The fact that they are square and don’t roll around it’s an aspect that you didn’t think about and it’s essential in Home gyms where if a normal dumber rolls off into the distance can go against furniture. They also the most compact of them all
Ironmaster adjustable dumbbells are the best, period. Built like a tank and will last forever. I got mine used many years ago and they had a little wear and tear on them. This past summer, I took all the weights to the garage, wirebrushed them, and spray painted them black. They look better than new now! I've told my wife, if I ever come home from work and the house is on fire, I'm running in to get her and the kids. Then when they are safe, I'm running back in to get my Ironmaster dumbbells.
No need, those dumbbells would survive the fire all on their own!

I’ve had the Ironmasters and the Powerblocks. If you’re making precision weight adjustments that aren’t flat 10-15lbs jumps, they take about the same time to change since you have to take the blocks out and fiddle with the adder weights. The main issue with Ironmasters as far as change speed goes is actually the stand. If the plates are stored on something more like a rod you’d see traditional weight plates on, they’re effortless to pick up and put on. Older models from other brands had stands that let you do similar things. Lacking that and you’re doing mini wrist curls. Still love mine tremendously more than the Powerblocks I had, and the Ironmasters go to 165, not 120. Their kettlebell handle that goes with them is also wonderful, as is their general ecosystem.
That's a lie. I can change my powerblocks adder weights and all in around 5 seconds per dumbbell. Your not changing all 4 sides or your ironmaster in 10 seconds unless you're flash.

@@powerbar8991 changing all 4 sides is doable in 10 seconds. i own a iron master set + 160lbs extension. During between sets, my iron masters are laid flat on the floor with extra weight plates near by ready to add or remove from the dumbbell. you twist each side of the bolts a quarter turn in opposite directions to unbolt both sides in 1 simple movement and add plates or remove plates for the weight you want then screw them bolts back on. The small detail the video doesn't show is the screws have a straight smooth groove on them saving time on screwing on and off the bolts. You simply slide the bolts all the way in where the bolt touches the plates (with the help of the smooth straight groove) and make a quarter/half turn on the bolt to securely tighten the plates in place.
I have a set of powerblock 80’s from the early 1990’s! I use them daily without any issues

If you go Powerblocks you have to get the steel ones. I got the Eiltes up to 70 LBS and doubt they'll ever break. You can just weld them if you ever break something.
Don’t forget the added bonus that powerblocks can be put on kettle bell handles, straight bar and EZ curl bar. I find that a super amazing bonus feature.

I lucked out. About a month or two before the pandemic kicked in, I got a urethane Powerblock set from a guy off Craigslist. I bought the expansions, straight bar, and kettlebell attachments from Powerblock and then BAM, everyplace sold out everywhere!
I sold my old set of PBs (had em for over 20 years) to a desperate lifter, more than reimbursing me for the cost of all my new PB equipment.
I didn't know that, my iron masters can do the same too.
I've had Powerblocks for years. The main reason I love them so much is because I take them with me to and from the fire station when I'm working and I don't have to worry about those stupid base plates. They just load and go as one unit.

I actually just sold my Ironmaster set and got a set of Powerblocks Pro. The convenience of the speedy weight changes in Powerblocks won me over, but it’s hard to go wrong with either one. The Ironmasters held their value so well, I actually sold them for more than I paid for them.
Powerblocks look and feel weird.
The best setup in my opinion is two Ironmaster dumbbell sets. One for lower weights and one for higher weights. It reduces weight changes drastically.

It’s year 2022 and my 2009 BowFlex 552’s still rockin for 13 years.
I have the bowflex 552s, bought them because they were on sale for the same price as the no-name brand alternative.
They are good - I'm happy with them. I don't regret the purchase. Here are some of my opinions/gripes after 3 years use (not super heavy use mind - I do seasonal bush work so I don't use them 6 months a year)
They tend to get stuck somewhat regularly, like they don't sit properly in the holder - requiring you to put your foot on the holder pull the dumbells out and re-seat them. Not a deal breaker, just an annoyance. The first time it happened it took me a good 15 minutes to figure out - but after that it's always been a super easy fix. (when they get stuck they look like they are properly seated, but the weight adjustment will be locked out and when you pick them up the base will come with them)
They are wider than regular dumbells, which is often an annoyance - but also part of the territory of adjustables, so not necessarily a mark against them.
The plasticness of them kinda weirds me out - I've been careful never to drop them or abuse them, and they've held up flawlessly. But I always have to take the conscious effort to gently put them in the holders. (I don't know how durability actually is - they've held up flawlessly, but I've never abused them) I wish I could confidently be a bit rougher with them like I could regular dumbells.
Now for the good
At the price I got them, they are a great value vs a regular dumbell set.
They adjust really easily - this is huge. I can plop them down and have both adjusted to a new weight in under 30 seconds - fantastic when switching quickly between different workouts. I'll change them 10+ times a workout, so that convenience is great.
From my experience: I would probably recommend them to someone who is more careful with their stuff and is fine with the 52lb limit (the average person). If you are super aggressive in your workouts, I could definitely see durability being an issue.
I bought a pair of 90 lb PowerBlocks second-hand ten years ago and they are absolutely bulletproof. I agree that they do feel different than a standard dumbbell but in some ways the differences are good. flipping them over gives two handles, which opens up options for things like overhead presses and such.
Agreed, I love the Powerblocks, and having the two handles is a plus. Works well for bent over close grip rows or overhead presses, as you mentioned.

I bought a set of Ironmasters and then got the heavy handle kit. Brings these bad boys from up to 75 pounds each to 90 pounds. Going to buy the 120 pound expansion kit soon ( which is really 135 pounds with the 15 pound heavy handle kit). Fantastic review. I love adjustable dumbbells.
In June 2023 the bowflex 552 has now gone up to $430 for 2, but I bought just 1 at Walmart for $220 thinking that I was getting the pair for 1/2 price. Nope....its just 1- 52.5lb dumbbell all by itself. At the store that had the pair for $430( 80 dollars inflation in just 2 yrs), they also sell the powerblock sportblock exp for $409 or....the pro version for $509 plus available the stage 2 addon for 140 additional.
I purchased the power block stage 3 dumbbells when they first came out probably 30 years ago and have used them often to this day. I think they were about the same price. Love them.

Awesome selection! For an investment Powerblock sounds like the best opton, a shame it doesn't look like a regular dumbbell and might feel off on some moves. Nuobell looks great but the durability is questionable with all the plastic. Tradeoffs are expected, just gotta have the budget. Thanks Coop!
just checked out the nuobells page and it feels like every 5th review has a complaint about them breaking, the poor shipping, or meh customer service. they look slick and i was hoping they were the answer but i'm gonna go with something else i think.
When I bought my Ironmasters they had Powerblocks on the floor at the Ironmaster store, got to make up my mind right there that I didn't want PBs.
Power block elite are definitely quick though. I like mine. Good for bodybuilding style workouts
I used to work as a travel nurse, moving every 3-6 months. Bought a set of Powerblocks and used em for 20 years. Finally sold em, but only cause I picked up a newer set with the straight bar attachment. Can't recommend em enough.
After twenty years, my selector pins did break, but I was able to get replacements from Powerblock cheaply and without any problem.
I've used the Powerblocks back in the day and they felt awkward while using. I've used the BowFlex select tech 552 in my home gym for 6 years and they still work well for me. I bought them off craigslist with the stand for $250 in great condition. The only downside is it's not enough weight. Great review though.
Feel like the bow flex wouldn't even last me 2 year considering all the plastic it uses. I bought a Chinese knockoff Bowflex (one that goes up to 90lbs) and it's falling apart on me and not even a year use. Granted I can be pretty careless with em. The build looks very similar to that of the bowflex

Your final pick the Powerbock Elite??? TOTALLY AGREE!!! I bought these a few years ago, they are durable, cost effective, and at 90 pounds per hand they provide great growth potential for bicep and back development. Plus, they are fairly quick to change out compared to some of the more expensive options in the form of other brands.
I own Powerblocks and theyr'e solid as mentioned. I would recommend anyone to get the urethane version if you don't like to be noisy when you lift.

I have the Ironmaster's for a years now. they actually go up 165 not 120. Also, I lay them flat on the floor and that way you can unlock-lock both sides at the same time saving you a few seconds for sure rather than do 1 side and then flipping it around.
i have regular Power Blocks for 10 years now, they go from 2,5 to 22,5kg. I love them, dont want anything else

Thanks Coop for your brilliant video always! I’d also take increments into consideration especially for small framed female lifters. For example when I do DB press, a 2.5kg is just too big a jump, so in this case iron master is a perfect solution as it’d allow me to even do 2.5lb(about 1.1kg) jump.
I actually have commented in one of Coops other videos about things I don't like about Iron Masters. I've owned a set for maybe 6 years. The biggest issue is indeed how slow they are to change, but aside from that I have several other complaints:
1) First off, they don't lock very well at low weight. I'm talking in the range of 10-17.5 lbs...there just doesn't seem to be enough width in the 2.5 lbs plates to really lock the screws down.
2) Also, the fact that they only sell 5 lbs and 2.5 lb plates (and 22.5 lbs plates if you look at their kettlebell section) is annoying.
3) The handles are nice, but they are a little too long for perfect comfort. As Coop mentioned previously, the length is probably just to accommodate a longer screw inside the handle. But it does make the weights a little hard to balance if you don't grab them symmetrically right off the bat.
4) Finally, mine have rusted quite a bit and the paint is flecking off the plates pretty badly...such that I've had to sand them a bit so I don't have stuff falling into my eyes when I am doing dumbbell bench press.
All that being said, when they are properly locked down they are definitely solid and lend themselves well to pretty much any exercise you would want to do with a dumbbell. I'd love it if Iron Master would sell other plate sizes, and figure a way to shorten the handle by maybe 1 inch and if they could figure out how to make the screws lock as well at low weight as they do at the higher ranges.

Same. Ive had mine for over 10 years and they look as good as when I first bought them.
I love mine, too. Purchased before the oa pandemic. Got the standard 75lb dumbell set, the 120lb expansion kit, and an extra set of dumbell handles. That way you can keep 1 set heavy and another set light to alternate between exercises. Right now they're having lottery entries just to buy their dumbells, though.

you've got block type dumbbell (powerblock), dial type (bowflex, mx) and twist type (nuobell), but you don't have glide type (e.g. IRONBEAST, I think NordicTrack is also of this type ). I would like to see a review of the glide type. Especially comparison glide vs twist type as those two are the quickest in terms of changing the weight. edit. NordicTrack review would also be appreciated
Great video. I agree, I have the Powerblocks up to 90 lbs. After a while you adjust to the feel of them, and it’s the gym dumbbells start to feel weird.
I've had the nuobells for about 2 years and had no issues with them. As long as you are careful with them then they are perfectly durable
AtivaFit is what I use. Don't drop them, but they change super quick (looks faster than the Nuo Bells), and they go from 11 to 71.5lbs in 5.5 lb increments. I got them at $400 for the pair 2 years ago and couldn't be happier with the purchase.

Gungnir loadable handles deserve more attention in this review, as they are nicer than the Rogues and have built in collars. Way nicer to use than having to put 4 collars on each time with a traditional loadable DB.

@@brianthompson5672 Rogue and Coop have a cozy relationship, but it doesn't reflect well on him that he just said Rogue's are the best when there are dozens very similar to Rogue's and non like Gungnir's.
@@dlroto Not as pricey when one considered that 2 sets of very good collars aren't required that would otherwise be necessary with any other set of loadable DBs.
@@CaptCanuck4444 I think he weighed the lifetime warranty and build/material quality high on the DB-15s to place them over Titan and other alternatives.
I agree that I would recommend Gungnir over Rogue for the high end Olympic loadable handles unless you have really thick plates and need more loadable sleeve space.

Got my power blocks 15 years ago… used… they’re still the best dumbbell I’ve used. They’re the concept 2 of dumbbells… they just work reliably, forever.
I agree with your conclusion, sir. The Powerblocks are the original quick change dumbells and still the best.

Ive had my bowflex 1090s for almost a decade. Was disappointed you rated them so low. Ive used them thousands of times and they still are in excellent condition. Yes they are a bit bulky compared to standard dumbells but im able to do any exercise i can comfortably. The powerblocks seem difficult and confusing to use, being that you have to use color coding and extra stuff to adjust; whereas the bowflex you don't have to think, you just turn the dial and boom. I highly recommend the bowflex 1090.
I have had a set of 1090s for a year and I love them I have always said if you can’t control your weight enough to set it down then you shouldn’t be lifting it
Loving my Core Home Fitness dumbells. Wish they got heavier but overall loving them.

I think I've had the Bowflex 552s like 4 years? Love them! Nothing broken yet. I do wish the weight was a little more compact. Sometimes they feel a bit long. My hammer curls kinda bump my shoulders for instance. But overall, great product.
My friend had the Bowflex. Some of the weights in them fell out when I was doing shrugs. I'm just never going to risk it with them.
plastic cracks on them, they are horrible.
@@MrGlassAnkles yeah it's just not worth it to me. Honestly turned me away from adjustable for a while, but solid built stuff like iron masters got me interested again.

I agree those are the best dumbbells. Been using my power blocks for over 20 years. Since I was 15 years old. Save so much time and can work out with anyone because of the speed.
Iron masters can be loaded both sides at same time. That is why square plates; they stand up on their own. Had mine for 10 years and love them.

This. I have the urethane ones, but I see they are making newer ones. Also, it can technically go to 125lns or so stage 4 kit but discontinued
I had been waiting for the powerblock to come back in stock and they are today just as I'm watching this video! They're now $329 though. Can't wait to get them.

Excellent video on the shortcomings of many of the dumbbells.
The first set of Ironmaster's purchased should be the 75 lb. set with the stand. Next upgrade is to 120 lbs. and the final upgrade is to 165 lbs. Ironmaster's "heavy handle kit" that secures on the inside of the handles adds another 15 lbs. which would take it max to 180 lbs. Ironmaster also offers "micro plates" that allow 2.5 lb. increments in weight. Ironmaster's makes kettlebell handles that use the plates of their dumbbell sets! There is a reason why Lee Priest was hired to demonstrate Ironmaster--he probably got all their "stuff" for free as a bonus too!
Powerblock now offers a "Commercial Pro Series" available in 125 lbs. and 175 lbs. I don't like having my hands inside the Powerblocks. I have had shoulder tendon or ligament injuries and my concern would be being able to quickly drop a Powerblock with my hand inside it. I guess I'm wimping out on that. A friend who sells used equipment had a set of 90's he had acquired. I stopped by his shop, saw them and I picked one up and curled it. He looked at me and I at him. WTF! In his eyes he is saying I know your strong but this is ridiculous. I was at the time using 70 lb. dumbbells for standing dumbbell curls. It seems that my habit of also curing my wrist when doing curls brought the rounded, cushioned part of the upside of the Powerblock to rest on my forearm just above my wrist giving me a fulcrum I suppose.
I didn't know about the "BAADASS" handles. That is some valuable info especially as there isn't the negative of a bar protruding from the plates. It isn't only ergonomics for those doing dumbbell bench presses who rest the dumbbell on their knees that isn't comfortable. Best short presentation I've seen. Covered about anything worth spending money on.

Super helpful. Thanks for buying all these so I don't have to. I had pretty much decided on IronMaster for my heavy lifting already but it was nice to have that choice confirmed. I don't love that it takes so long to change the weight but heavy lifting requires longer rests anyway so it's not too big of a deal when the other features are considered, like the all-metal construction and the fact that they can go up to 165 now with add-ons, whereas other selectable weight dumbbells aren't expandable if you want to move up to heavier weights eventually. So it's like buying weights in installments.

I think the biggest thing when looking for adjusting bells, it really comes down to personal preference, how important is it to have the feel of a real dumbbell vs the ability to change them over quickly etc. Awesome vid as always coop 👌👍

Hands down, the Power Blocks are the best adjustable dumbbells on the market. I’ve had my set, that ranges from 5-125lbs for well over 20+ years without any problems. I would never consider selling them! Best piece of exercise equipment I’ve ever purchased. Love them!
