We were at Bristol one year (1979 or 1980 I think) and the track closed for the day. We put our car to bed and was walking through the pit area toward the gate. Pearson was sitting talking to a group of people. It was when he was sponsored by Levi Garrett Chewing Tobacco. My friend Dan was a chewer at the time. He asked Mr Pearson "Do you use your sponsors products? to which David replied "Yeah, Of course I do". So Dan pulls a pack of Levi Garrett out of his pocket and offered David some. David laughed and said " No thanks, I gotta go eat supper. I'm having chicken". We all had a good laugh. He was a great guy.
While driving for the Wood Brothers for 6 1/2years (72-79) if Pearson had competed in all the races each year rater than just 18 to 20 he'd have easily won at least 4 more championships. He was and is the best driver of all time.
A 10-time winner at Darlington, the King of the Track Too Tough To Tame. Carl Edwards gained an advantage quite a bit promoting this because he would wind up finishing second in the Southern 500 when they eventually raced on the new surface. Edwards then went on to win the Southern 500 seven years later in 2015. Can't wait until this weekend, I love the racetrack, there is so much history and memories integrated into the 1.366 miles of racing groove, and no matter how many times you repave it, you can rip the old asphalt out, but you can't rip the history and memories out. Last year's event with the aero package was insane with the 3.5-inch spoiler (also used in 2015), but believe me on Sunday they will have their hands full with a 2.375-inch spoiler on an abrasive surface, and the winner will either be the Pole sitter or you have to qualify in the Top 10.
one of the greatest battles in nascar was between the silver fox and the king, and through watching old races and clips and you tube vids,i have never ever seen anyone race as hard and fearless as david pearson, and when he drove that purolator mercury to victory in daytona in 1976 after him and the king wrecked each other i just thought wow now thats a racing hero right there.amazing stuff, glad to see he was winning in a boss 429 powered mercury, what a great engine.
The Back Flipper vs the guy who drives to victory lane. No burnouts no snow Angels no back flipping no climbing fence's. I like David Pearson he was truly the best. As far as I'm concerned.
As I NASCAR fan, I would slap someone who doesn't know who the Silver Fox is. I'm only 20 and I can't stand how these new fans don't know the history of the sport.
The 71 Montego, SURPRISINGLY, may hold the record for super speedway wins of a true production car. David Pearson racked up 15 wins between 72' & 73" in the 71 Montego, plus a win by James Hylton in a 71 Montego (#48) in the second race at Talladega in 72' . Also note that the 1970 Montego started on the super speedways with 427 shown on the hood, and some were sold to the public with 427's.
NOTHING come with 427 starring in 1969. They was over counter only at Ford. They had emblems ready and even in the armchair estimator as option. Ford couldn't keep up with the Vietnam war boat demand so they scratched it as option. 1968 last year for 427 as option.
@@davidhager5206 This may surprise you, but there were some 70 Cyclones / Montegos that had factory 427's, though not many. IF you note on the hood of some 70 Montegos that ran in Super Speedway races, you'll see 427 on the hoods.
There is no such thing as an FE series 429, of course it was a boss 429.The Fe series was the 427 which ford ran from 1963 until early 1969. The Boss 429 came into racing at Atlanta in 1969. The FE series however holds a very unusual record, the basic concept of the engine comes from the 352 introduced in 1957. The Ford 427 is the ONLY engine to ever won, Daytona, The 24 Hrs Of Lemans, Top Fuel Funny Car and AA/FD, oh did I mention they did them in the same year, 1967!
You're right. When NASCAR decided to slow the cars down in the early '70s it was Bud Moore who showed them that a 351 Ford could stand up to 500 miles at maximum RPM. Ford people, including Moore, the Wood Brothers (created the pit stop as we know it) and Holman & Moody (purpose-built chassis, fuel cells) are responsible for most of the technical advances in NASCAR over the past 40 years. But who gets all of the glory? Those GD GM drivers and their GD wimp-ass Shitrolays. The Blue Oval Forever!
Absolutely buddy Ford first on race day fast on race day and last but certainly not least ferocious on race day no junk Chevrolet when the Wood Brothers Mercury was on nobody be no one you have a great night take care buddy
As a kid in the 70's, I was thrilled to share the same name as The Silver Fox. Still today, when I'm introduced to new folks, some will ask if I'm a racing fan.

Sure was good to see David behind the wheel again. A true champion!

Too tough to tame.
Pearson: "Give me my smokes and a pack of Wrigley's Spearmint".
Boss 429
What a beast!!

The King never said one word about the wreck. David Pearson was his favorite driver.
They weren't running the 429 by '76. The cubic inch limit was 358 for a few years at that point.
What a beautiful car!! Mercury Cyclone, awesome. God bless David Person.
Legendary car, driver, and team.
The good old days
WoW...What an honor for Car Edwards!
I live 12 miles from the Talladega track but Ive always wanted to attend a Darlington race. Maybe 1 day

Classy move by Carl
David-greatest FoMoCo driver ever
Cale-greatest GM driver ever
Richard-greatest Chrysler driver ever
end of story
I think Jeff Gordon is the best GM driver with 93 wins.
What do you folks think of that new surface they're racing on ?

He didn't even have drivers suit on.
One stock car looks badass as hell, one car looks like a piece of shit. Take a wild guess which one is which.
It would have been nice to hear the cars. But NO all we get to hear is the effing narrate. WTF 🤬
RIP David Pearson
They don’t make em like the silver fox anymore..
The Silver Fox and the Purolator Mercury, awesome!
Did you use MOTORCRAFT OIL
Absolutely buddy Ford first on race day fast on race day and last but certainly not least ferocious on race day no junk Chevrolet when the Wood Brothers Mercury was on nobody be no one you have a great night take care buddy
wonder whether it's a boss 429...an FE style 429...a 429/460 style 429? wish they would have shown an underhood shot
As a kid in the 70's, I was thrilled to share the same name as The Silver Fox. Still today, when I'm introduced to new folks, some will ask if I'm a racing fan.
