I still hate idli tho. As a kid The only time where I eat all veggies is when I'm eating the Onasadhya. I mix everything and clean out my എല. So everytime I refuse to eat idli my mom used to say Maybe they should Idli to sadhya too so I would eat it

Kishen, u're such a livewire!! I'm likewise too.. the major language spoken here is Malay, English and Tamil in my country (Malaysia).. Malayalam is so rare... when I visited Kerala, listening to ppl speaking Malayalam all around me, it was music to my ears..🥰 whenever I tried speaking Malayalam, the locals in Kerala ended up replying in Tamil 😂😂😂 My spoken Malayalam is broken one 🥲🥲

I am a Malayali lived my half life in Switzerland and now in Mumbai.... I hv never eaten a proper Saddya in Kerala.... My mom tries to give me the best in Onam or Vishu Saddya.... And for me thats authentic 😂😂 My mom are dad are frm different parts of kerala and they always fight that this dish shouldn't be like this like that.... And i enjoy that😂
I know the feeling bro I am from Trivandrum My sister is married and settled in Ernakulam and my brother-in-law's family is from Tamil Nadu. So when we have small get-togethers they both have small fights during the preparation of various food items which is super cute to watch and Amma be like 'Ivar pinneyum thudangi' :D
Appalam: its harder than pappadam, it has a smaller rice flour to ural dal ratio and it is usually flat when fried( there are versions that poof also). texture like breaking cardboard
Pappadam: its generally fluffier, it poofs on frying and looks like a poori, usually drier than appalam, usually thinner, tastes best with spicy rasam and rice. texture like poories

Many interchange the terms Pulissery and Kaalan due to the sourness but both of them are very different.
Pulissery can be made with many vegetables(sometimes fruits like mango) but Kaalan is mostly made with either yam (elephant foot) or raw bananas or even both.
Pulissery is normally thinner in consistency. Kaalan can be made thin(kuzhambu) or thicker(kurukku).
The spices which provide heat in Pulissery are chillies(green or red or both) but in Kaalan, pepper powder is added along with the chillies which also gives it a different flavour.
In Kaalan, another ingredient is mandatory which is Fenugreek powder whereas in Pulissery, Fenugreek powder isn't added although whole Fenugreek seeds are added(optionally) as a part of tempering (tadka).

"Manga achar" has been incorrectly labelled as "Upillita manga" and "parippu" wrongly as "parippu payasam" at 3:52. Also what's labelled as sambar looks suspiciously like rasam. :) Nice episode though, Happy Onam everyone.

Manga achar is also called upillita manga in Northern Kerala. But yes, the parippu was wrongly labelled.
