Hello The Thamesmen ! Nightwish fans here, your musical quest summoned us.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band, performing here at Wacken Open Air in 2013, together with Floor Jansen, the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of a 82k audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
As I saw, you enjoyed the powerful performance of the band, together with the stellar vocals of our Dutch metal queen, Floor Jansen. Hope you'll continue on this path.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [The 1st Bassist of the band was Sami Vanska, he was with them until 2001. The 2nd one was Marco Hietala, as Bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least - we'll see what the future brings to us. Then very recently (May 2021) Jukka Koskinen became the 3nd Bassist of the band, for at least the Human :II: Nature tour] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

Poor Emppu. He just does what the song needs without doing unnecessary fancy stuff. But He can play really well if he wants to.

The thing about the guitarist, Emppu, is that he IS very good. But he's also very humble, not a showoff or a show stealer in the least bit. He plays what the song needs, not what would make him look good.

Romanticide live in Wacken with a great metal solo and high hopes ( i like Emppus solo more than Gilmours).
The High Hopes cover sure would be a good one.
I have to agree here. Personally I just hate those musicians who feel the need to put in 7 shredding guitar solos, and them some more "gymnastics" with their gear......

Don't sleep on the guitarist Emppu, as this song is not representative of his talent level. He plays only what the song requires and never shows off with some ridiculous, over-the-top shredding. In this case, the song didn't require much. This concert was at the Wacken Open Air in 2013. They were the headliner for the concert and this was played in front of 82,000 people. This was the 13th song on a 15 song setlist.
About Floor Jansen, their Dutch singer, well you ain't heard nuthin' yet. From death growls to opera and everything in between. Sings multiple genres, in multiple languages and can shift vocal styles from one note to the next.
Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboardist, is the mastermind behind Nightwish and has been branded the "Metal Mozart" for the breadth and depth of his compositions. The orchestral and choral music you hear on the backing track is from the London Philharmonic Orchestra and associated choirs. Nightwish has been working with since about 2004.
And no, it wouldn't be better in the studio.

@@TheThamesmen Emppu the gituarist is kind of underrated in this sack of super overpowered talented musicians. Emppu is only doing what is good for the song, he is not overperforming, he isn`t a poser, like most other guitarists. Emppu is an absolute teamplayer.

Everyone in this band is TOP LEVEL MUSICIANS. And Nightwish discography (?) is DEMANDING with complicated songs and structures because the keyboard player, composer, maker and creator of Nightwish, TUOMAS, makes them that way.Because he is BRILLIANT like that. Music comes to him and tells him how it needs to be played. He doesn't listen to music himself but he sure makes the most beautiful music with twist and turns and doesn't limit himself only to metal. Metal bands play metal, Nightwish plays Nightwish.

@@TheThamesmen Yes admittedly the first time I heard the solo I thought it was just ok but after hearing more from them and when and how Emppu shreds I completely changed my mind! He is great and very entertaining to watch. Check out Romanticide ruclips.net/video/zz_7OCCQlXs/видео.html for a bit more shredding from him. Also another note about his playing. Because some of the solos are less "shreddy" he plays them very clean with no room for mistakes or you would hear it a mile away. Great reaction and hope you do more from them. "She" is Floor Jansen, a Dutch classically trained soprano. She lives on a small farm in Sweden with her husband (drummer for Swedish metal band Sabaton), four year old daughter Freja, and her horses. She's a vocal coach, farmgirl, and wonderful soul who shares a lot (and does some killer covers) on her RUclips channel. And yes, she's 6'1 (6'4-6'5 in her stage heels.)

The rabbithole that is Nightwish is very deep, if u guys are digging into it u got alot of amazing music coming your way. They are all great musicians. Emppu is a terrific guitarist. He never plays over the top onanistic solos: he plays for the band and for the track. Less is more. If you watch more of their songs you will get a greater sense of how important his contribution is. He and they are exemplary.
No question about all their skills. Last night we recorded another track and will do more for sure. We are learning slowly😀

Im a mega Floyd fan and have been since 1975 , this though is on a different level BTW i turned the High Hopes off wasnt your reaction , just hated the singing on that , and it isnt meant to be a heavy song lasted about 90secs of it lol , dont like covers except two which ive seen on here and not of Floyd lol

Met the Valkyrie, I see, and also recognized her as such. We should tell her to not flaunt her superpowers too much. (No, we shouldn't.) Actually, if you think you've heard her vocal range, you are in for a few surprises still. (Opera... *cough* Growling... *cough* Cool Jazz *cough* From growling to opera in a split second *cough*).
She is 183 cm (6 feet and a few millimeters) tall (without heels). Also, sorry, she's already married to a Viking (drummer of Sabaton, Hannes van Dahl) and has a 4-year old daughter aptly named Freja.

Floor Jansen is the third and present singer of Nightwish and widely considered the best and most versatile female singer of our time, yet undiscovered by a broad audience. As I am a Flooraholic from Utrecht, The Netherlands here is some background information on our Dutch Valkyrie Queen. She joined the band 'After Forever' in 1997 at the age of 16. My favourite song is 'Energize Me'. They made a very beautiful music video out of this. 'After Forever' disbanded in 2009 and Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song, such as from full operatic to serious growls in seconds. The songs 'Disdain' and 'Wild Card' are good examples. September 2012 came the call from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the American Tour as their second singer Annette got ill. Floor had just 48 hours to learn the whole setlist. There is a documentary made of this world tour ('Please learn the setlist in 48 hours'). The lyrics of the songs of Nightwish are very poetic and the music as a whole is challenging, but Floor pulled it off and she stayed for the whole world tour, culminating in this iconic Wacken 2013 Open Air festival. It was obvious that the match Nightwish and Floor Jansen was made in Walhalla, so she became a permanent member of the band in 2013 as the relationship with Annette and the band was strained even before she became ill. Floor continued to perform with 'Revamp' for a couple of years, but it became clear that she could not combine the two for much longer, so Revamp disbanded in 2016. Floor did a side project called 'Northward' where she dived into the Hard Rock scene. The song 'While Love Died' is a must see. Her stunning performances on the Dutch TV show 'Beste Zangers 2019' gave her at last some more recognition in her home country where she was relatively unknown until then. There are numerous guest appearances with other bands to find on RUclips. To see how to get a crowd of metalheads silenced and in awe, watch her featuring with the band 'Epica' and the song 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa'. And to see her in full opera mode watch her rendition of 'O Mio Babbino Caro' from Puccini. As live concerts were cancelled and home isolation due to the Covid situation, Floor discovered RUclips in the last year and uploaded many interesting videos on her channel. Mindblowing covers, chats with her idols and other singers, vocal masterclasses and so much more. She even made a video reacting to herself performing this song at Wacken. Lots of technical info and some memories of her starting with Nightwish. Also her 'Fan Friday' videos are hilarious. Just unpack some of the presents she left there. Floorgasm alert! Floor is a high sensitive person, so peace and quiet is as important for her. Living by the woods in Sweden with her husband Hannes Van Dahl (drummer of the band 'Sabaton'); daughter Freja (just turned 4 years); a horse and pony; a dog and a bunch of cats, she found this.

Had never heard of the whole genre of symphonic metal either. I got SO EXCITED because I didn’t think there was any music since 1990 that I would like. Once I discovered Nightwish, I started lookin around and discovered Tool and grunge. It’s been a GREAT education

Although not 7 ft tall, she is a stunning 6'1". This performance was from 2013's Wacken Open Air (pronounced Vah-kin) and believe it or not, this is quite far into a very demanding setlist, which less than one year earlier, Floor managed to learn in just 48 hours. Their live concert versions of their songs are far better than their studio cuts. Their concert of 2013 at Wacken Open Air were directly recorded to DVD. Nightwish musicians (from Finland) and vocalist Floor Jansen (from the Netherlands) are all next level performers.

Our Valkyrie Queen and her name is Floor Jansen and she's Dutch . She had been with Nightwish for 10 months here. The year before she joined she was suffering from a Burnout. 82,000 strong. She is the 3rd and Final singer. F Y I this is Floor's 3rd band. She's been singing since she was 16.

Nightwish is a glorious rabbit hole of awesome, with world class song-writing, musicianship and arguably (or unarguably to most who've heard her enough😉) the best female vocalist alive today (maybe ever), the Valkyrie Queen of metal herself Floor Jansen (pronounced Yansen). Floor is a soprano and has a vocal range of more than 3 octaves (D3 to F6).
Floor is the third female vocalist that Nightwish have had, she was only with them on tour for 10 months at this point and officially joined the band in 2013, she is still with them today.
The other vocalists are -
Tarja Turunen - (1996-2005) - (Finland) - Very operatic focused vocals.
Anette Olzon - (2007-2012) - (Sweden) - More pop-centric vocals.
Floor Jansen - (2012-Present) - (Netherlands) - Extremely diverse vocals, from deep growls to full on opera.
The other band members are -
Tuomas Holopainen - Song writer/composer and Keyboards. (Finland)
Marko Hietala - Bassist and vocals. (Finland)
Emppu Vuorinen - Guitarist (Finland)
Jukka Nevalainen - Drums (Finland) Retired in 2014 due to health issues
Troy Donockley - Multi-instrumentalist and Vocals. (United Kingdom)
Kai Hahto - Drums (Finland) - 2014 to Present
Floor herself is Dutch and is another glorious goldmine of awesome as she has a lot of non-Nightwish related stuff (including 2 other bands, After Forever & ReVamp) that she has done that is all pretty amazing as well. She is also an absolutely lovely, funny, smart and grounded person (in fact all the band members are exceedingly down to earth individuals). She has her own channel here on RUclips where she regularly posts covers of songs.
The band was formed in 1996 by lead songwriter/composer and keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen.
The name of the genre they generally belong to is Symphonic Metal but their discography is extremely varied.
The "Symphonic" backing tracks of their music is composed in the majority by Tuomas and performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
This was the 13th song in this particular set, Floor is belting notes like that the entire set.
Nighwish are almost always better experienced with live versions of their songs if at all possible.
Most new reactors are better off sticking with the Wacken 2013 set to begin with as it offers a taste of a lot of what Nightwish has to offer.
Some suggestions for more songs for you to continue your journey would be Romanticide, Ghost River, Storytime, I Wish I had an Angel, Song of Myself, Ever Dream, Dark Chest of Wonders, I Want My Tears Back and Amaranth all from Wacken 2013 (pronounced Vacken).
Saying that, anything from Wacken 2013 is golden really to start, there's a reason why that set is pretty legendary at this point, 82,000 people were in attendance.
Beware of some messed up slowed down versions of the Wacken 2013 songs as they can take the energy right out of the performances, just check the comments on them and I'm sure someone will mention if it's a slowed down version.
Your choice obviously but I'd avoid Poet and the Pendulum and The Greatest Show on Earth for now until you are more familiar with the band and it's history, they will make a lot more sense and be more enjoyable for you that way.

Yeah, this song doesn't really showcase Emppu's talent. He can definitely shred when called to do so. Examples:

I would add Shudder before the beautiful to the list, preferably from the Wembley 2015 show. It’s a bit different since it’s more of a duel with Tuomas.
But he’s the more like the king of heavy riffs, not really sultain of shred as such… 🎸🔥

Shredding is for insecure kids who wouldn't recognise a tune if it fell on them from the heavens like a hammer. Emppu has an uncanny ear for a *song*.
@@thisworldofwater8017 LOL, I'm not sure I would quite go that far, but when it's overdone, shredding certainly loses some of its sparkle IMHO, especially in this genre of music.

I'm 74 and have been listening to music (rock, metal, classical, world, etc.) for 60 years. Nightwish is the best band I've ever heard. Much for you to explore.
