I couldn't find a decent "Gold text " effect video using gimp so I followed this video. I basically followed the video above with the scripts and plug-in but first used a medium yellow/brown text and then in the Bevel/emboss layering effect I used a lighter yellow (almost bright yellow) and ended up getting a really nice gold tone effect!!! Thanks for all the great videos...learning a lot and trying a number of new things
Last time I worked in a serious graphics program was over 10 years ago. You've just become my hero. So much has changed in the graphics industry the damn thing had me in tears and ready to reprogram with an ax. You have just made my day......maybe my entire month.
Awesome - I'm the world's biggest NOOB at stuff like this, never used or even seen Photoshop or anything like this until a week ago. Following your tutorial got this straight away, turned my horrifically basc title for my website/forum into a chromed one - no one believed I did it myself - a week ago I couldn't even understand layers or resize an image!!!! THANK YOU x1000 :D
Great video. I also want to make a note of a small touch you did with this and the other video regarding the script/plugin installation. I like how in that video, when you click the annotation to come back to this vid, it jumps to right where you mention having installed them. Nice.
THIS is what i need. now i need to see if it's still relevant and works. Hope so. been trying to figure out how to make these kinds of letters for book covers for a while
Disregard the latest one also - I just needed to reconfigure my mouse... I didn't know the question was irrelevant to Gimp. BTW. I'm a very new Gimp user and have really no problem following this video at all. Just pausing a lot which is a very minor inconvenience. Thanks and I look forward to watching more!
Thank you for the tip on downloading the scripts and filters, good stuff. Just one suggestion for beginners like me, is to say what type of gradient your are using. Thank you again.
Hey, Monsoonami. I messed up the fade-out and shadow effects on my first go-around, but I'll try it again another day. Thank U again 4 your tutuorials.
In the latest version of G'MIC the Enhancements tab has been deprecated. To find Anisotropic Smoothing go to Repair -> Smooth (anisotropic) I would suggest also applying the Smooth (mean curvature) effect as well to remove most of the grain, default settings.
Fantastic tutorials especially for somebody new to graphics editing software such as myself. Many many thanks and please keep up the excellent and informative work.
First off, I just wanted to say that your Gimp videos are GREAT!!! I hope you continue to make more. You are easy to follow and I've enjoyed creating my own projects while following along with you. As far as a request... I would love for you to do a gimp video on creating Gold Text and Graffiti Text on the side of a building or something rad like that. SALUTE!
@brikster00 I originally used a different plugin called GREYCstoration, which did not have so many settings, but the people who created that plugin replaced it with a new one called G'MIC, which has many many more features. But they posted that the "anisotropic smoothing" feature inside of G'MIC was basically the same as the original GREYCstoration plugin, so that's how I knew which option to choose. I chose the settings inside of anisotropic smoothing based on my own experimentation.
Nice tutorial, and subbed. After installing the plug-ins I noticed that in my version some script-fu options where different, but after searching a bit further I found the exact same commands and proceeded. Very helpfull tutorial as I need people like you to show me how to get more out of this great program. Thanks!
great tutorial man. i just have to have the gmic script to appear on mac. they have a 32 bit only but very good pacing and cool text effect again. learned a lot cool little effects. great stuff
In 2.10.14 version of Gimp 'script-fu bevel and emboss' doesn't work, more exactly it processes text but then nothing happen. Just happens to me? Anyone can help me? Thank you
The LOCK check box is in the same place but now loos like a paintbrush ... no idea why but it does lock the layer, also, the filter you're looking for is now in the REPAIR section of the GMIC filters. Took me a while to find it too! Hope that helps :-)
@LoveAnythingPink The "Video" menu appears when you install GAP, which is the GIMP Animation Package. It's a plug-in for working with animations, extracting frames from videos, etc. I haven't tried Resynthesizer yet, but I might get around to it some day.
Good tut! I was doing ok up to the point were you mess with curves. Nothing I seemed to do looked good! =( I'll play with is again later on! Oh BTW .. what program did you use to record your tut? Is that camstudio??
Excellent tutorial. thanks for posting it! As of G'Mic breaking in 2.8 I'm running Gimp 2.8 32bit under win7 x64 and its doesn't break at all on mine. Use the exe and let it do its thing and you should be good to go.
Latest version of G'MIC does not have any "Enhancement" section nor "Anisotropic smoothing". But it has a whole bunch of new filters. EDIT: Found a similar filter in G'MIC: Repair -> Smooth (Anisotropic) I guess it'll do.
LOVE THIS TUTORIAL! Thank you so much! There were many out there on how to do this, but this was the BEST! And thank you to Evolution Tennis Academy for the extra info. since my version is different as well!
@2000Benjim If you want to work on the image more later, save it in GIMP's native format XCF, which preserves layers and such. Once you're done and want to actually use the image, you'll need to save it as probably a JPG or PNG.
@0k0t0 If you put the "layerfx.scm" file in your "...\username\.gimp-2.6\scripts\" folder and restarted gimp, then it should show up. So you don't get the "Script-Fu" menu next to "Filters" at all? Please go to Edit>Preferences in gimp. Then, in the list on the left, choose "Scripts," which is listed under "Folders." Make sure the file location where you saved the script shows up in that list on the right.
@gt8gtrman It should work on any computer capable of running gimp. You just need to download the layerfx.scm file and put it in your gimp scripts folder. The location of your gimp scripts folder will depend on what sort of computer you have though.
thank you so very much for your generosity, I am wondering how this will go with the new version of Gimp, 2.8? I notice that this video is several years old now, and I haven't installed the script incase it breaks something in the new version.
Hey, this was great! Worked perfectly. Thanks for both the resources (already had G'MIC, but the Layer FX is excellent). I also did the Glossy Metal Text tut and liked that a lot as well.
Great tutorial! I learned a few things that I'll be using a lot in the future. For others, you can try a ripple effect on the mirrored layer. Filters -> Distorts -> Ripple.
Cannot complete this as Gimp has obviously advanced on since you uploaded this video, some of the tasks cannot be completed. I get a couple of error messages. Any chance you could update this video with an up to date version? Many thanks
@psycopenguin99 Not sure. I've never tried gimp portable. Did you check your preferences inside gimp to see where it is looking for your scripts and plugins?
@0k0t0 Which OS are you using? Which scripts folder did you put it in? If you're using Windows, make sure you didn't accidentally save the .scm file as a .txt file instead.
That LOCK check box is not there, looks like you and i are using different versions so I couldn't follow you to the last as my text looked diff, but thanks anyway
@anxietyrelieftoday I'm not really sure I understand exactly what you're looking for. Is there any way you can demonstrate what you need with a picture? You might also have better luck finding help by posting your question on a GIMP forum like gimper.net, gimptalk.com, etc.
Using Mac OS 10.6.sumptin. Downloaded those 2 files to hard drive > library > scripts folder. There were other folders in scripts folder, but I just put the files in alone. Didn't show up in Gimp. So I copied am and opened Gimp and put the files about 7 folders in (a "python" folder) still don't show up in my Gimp editor.
So, I'm trying to use this for MS paint, and when I finish everything and try to put it on a white background and then onto MS paint and make it transparent, there's still white "grains" around the lettering, solution?
@monsoonami Great Vid! The opacity doesn't bring the beveled edges back for me. At 2:55 of the video: I duplicated text layer and ticked Lock. I set the colors to black and white, made sure gradient was still checked, clicked the bottom of the text and dragged straight up. Everything was fine up till that point. When I lowered the opacity down to 20, (around 3:10 mark of video), the beveled edges don't come back. Any ideas? Thanks - FYI: I didn't get the zlib1.dll in G'MIC download.
Try this: Follow the tutorial up to 3:25, where I used the Curves tool. Instead of using the Curves tool, go to the Blend tool (Gradient tool), and set the Gradient to the one called "Golden." Then go to Colors -> Map -> Gradient Map. That should make the text appear to be golden. Then, after skipping the curves tool part, follow the rest of the tutorial pretty much unchanged, except in the "Stroke" dialog box, set the Opacity to 100 and the Blending Mode to "Soft Light."
The bevel and emboss layer option doesn't work on my system (Windows 7 64 bit). I get an error message. If I use Filter -> Decor -> Bevel and apply the effect to my text it just stays like it was, there's no change.
Even seven years later this is still the best Gimp chrome tutorial on the internet !

That was really impressive. You definitely know your way around GIMP.
THIS is what i need. now i need to see if it's still relevant and works. Hope so. been trying to figure out how to make these kinds of letters for book covers for a while

Just wanted to send a big thank you! You're videos are very helpful!

Thank you very much!!
That smoothing tip was awesome. Thanks.
Thank you. Like everyone else, this was driving me nuts!!! Thanks.
thank you so much
It's worth noting that the recent version of G'MIC has anisotropic smoothing under:
Repair -> Smooth [anisotropic]
Thanks for the help with GIMP! This was awesome!
Fantastic tutorials especially for somebody new to graphics editing software such as myself. Many many thanks and please keep up the excellent and informative work.

excellent job! concise and no bull. More please!

This is great. Downloaded and started using the the pug ins with no problem. Thanks.
The Layer Effects script (which appears in the new Script-Fu menu outside of Filters) goes in the Scripts folder, not the Plugins folder.
Is there an updated version?
THANK YOU!! For so long I've been searching for this and now I found it!
Excellent tutorial. thanks for posting it!

Great Video. Thanks for taking the time to help
You are the number 1, great tutorials so I subscribed to you. Keep up very good and quality work! Respect. +1
Excellent work man...thanks
Love this tutorial! If I wanted to create a transparency of just the text layer what steps would I add and where? Newby asking.
Great tutorial. Very easy to follow. Keep more coming!
Thanks for the walkthrough! Having so much fun learning how to use this great program! Very well done tutorial!
Latest version of G'MIC does not have any "Enhancement" section nor "Anisotropic smoothing". But it has a whole bunch of new filters.
EDIT:
Found a similar filter in G'MIC: Repair -> Smooth (Anisotropic)
I guess it'll do.
SysGhost Thank you! I was looking all over, I knew it had to be there somewhere :D
+SysGhost Yes, thanks. That's where it is located in newer versions.
Great Tutorial. Very detailed
This gets me more and more excited about gimp. Im having a great time with it!
u are the best of ALL
very well explained and easy to follow thanks man.
LOVE THIS TUTORIAL! Thank you so much! There were many out there on how to do this, but this was the BEST! And thank you to Evolution Tennis Academy for the extra info. since my version is different as well!
awesome vid! this will help me with the logo I'm making myself. thanks a lot wanted to give some feedback

Hey, this was great! Worked perfectly. Thanks for both the resources (already had G'MIC, but the Layer FX is excellent). I also did the Glossy Metal Text tut and liked that a lot as well.
Thank you for helping us out on the text ^^.
this is perfectly perfect
GREAT VIDEO,
THANKS
Great tutorial, monsoonami! Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. Take care!
...anwar...
Great tutorial! I learned a few things that I'll be using a lot in the future. For others, you can try a ripple effect on the mirrored layer. Filters -> Distorts -> Ripple.
Nice video, could be just a smidge slower when showing where to access an effect though.
Wauw, you is very very got to this!
Your tutorial is just great, I'm looking forward the new ones /sorry abt my English/
I'm your subscriber Gimper now!
The Anisotropic is no longer in the Enhancement tab; its in Repair Smooth [anisotropic]
Excellent tuto ! bravo et merci pour cette vidéo très claire
Thank you !
Nevermind, I got the brilliant idea to layer the picture and newly made text together in GIMP and then export as a JPG, it's all good now.
Works fine for me. Nice video!
But just a little tip: try to speak slowy, I not a english speaker, so I got trouble to follow yours steps.
Cannot complete this as Gimp has obviously advanced on since you uploaded this video, some of the tasks cannot be completed. I get a couple of error messages. Any chance you could update this video with an up to date version?
Many thanks
Thank you very much for this, I use this technique very often now.
@psycopenguin99 Not sure. I've never tried gimp portable. Did you check your preferences inside gimp to see where it is looking for your scripts and plugins?
Dude, you're good. I still don't know how to do any of it. I'm sending you a PM.
@monsoonami Thank you so much dude.. It's now working.
very nice tutorial !!!!!! thank's
Dude, you are a bad ass.
thank you monsoonami! tks a lot!
@0k0t0 Which OS are you using? Which scripts folder did you put it in? If you're using Windows, make sure you didn't accidentally save the .scm file as a .txt file instead.
@monsoonami i finally got it thanks very much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That LOCK check box is not there, looks like you and i are using different versions so I couldn't follow you to the last as my text looked diff, but thanks anyway
Thank you. Very informative.
Good job in gimp
great tutorial.. thanks!!
Mind making a tutorial on how to create the "X" in Mac OS X?
For those who can't find the "Enhancements" go to Repair> Smooth [anistropic]
@monsoonami The opacity doesn't change anything from 100 down to 0. I checked and I'm using the GIMP copy for the opacity.
nice one
0:23 is it just me or did i miss the names of the script and plug in…? No idea what to download….!?
I would so like to do this, but i can't get it to work.
Gimp tutorial tip:
How to make glossy effects on menu buttons for websites.
@pupustinki Did you follow the annotation at the beginning to the other video which shows how to install the Layer Effects script?
Pure Dopeness
Love this tutorial. Thank you!

But you do have the Scripts, Brushes, etc. folders?
All of these links are out of date!
@izee8398 It's gimp 2.6, but I've customized the layout of some of the interface.
Try this:
Follow the tutorial up to 3:25, where I used the Curves tool. Instead of using the Curves tool, go to the Blend tool (Gradient tool), and set the Gradient to the one called "Golden."

When I applied the gradient to the background I got a horizontal rainbow pattern across the middle and I can't get rid of it.
great .. thank you very much
