One way to remember is the historical context. France had invested heavily in building two different lines of destroyers. One was roughly the same displacement and capability as everybody else's destroyers, the other was essentially a series of gigantic super-destroyers that were heavier and more capable than some light cruisers of their time. The French 140mm (actually 138 or smth) gun is significantly larger than the 105-127mm guns common on other destroyers and would be found on those super-destroyers. So it should come as no surprise that one of the biggest and baddest DD guns is a French gun. The Italians meanwhile had fairly average Destroyers, but had something similar to the French going with their cruisers, where they had a line of particularly small light cruisers. So in essence: Big DD -> French Wimpy CL -> Italian Massive oversimplification and all but it might help.

Same, I just played today and honestly AL looks so overwhelming with lots of choices of everything. I'd say stick to the basics and ignore the detail stats as it saves you from headache

Nice guides, though I think you're underrating the Gold Quad Magnetic torps. Yes, the quintuple are trash, but the Gold Quad Magnetic torps have comparable reload/damage to the Gold Quint 533 torps. While they have 1 less torp, the tracking means higher hit probabilities, especially on auto play.
yeah I should tone down my negativity towards them. After all, I'm running the Quad Magnet Torps on my Laffey and Tashkent. Totally agreed that the quintuple is trash, unless it's rainbow or on Mogami Retrofit.

I've got a weird question about yet another outlier: namely, Z46. She doesn't seem to be either torpedo or fp based, but instead seems to be AA? Then there's also the AP damage up skill. I know that Anti Sub warfare isn't that big of a thing in the game at the moment, and only really matters during some event's and certain missions stages, so that beg's the question of how you see destroyers, and Light Cruisers for that matter with anti-submarine weapons and systems, aka Sonar and Depth charges. Especially with all of the recent changes to sub warfare systems in-game.
Quik summary most ijn destroyer will be focused on torpedos and have horrible fire power so which every gun you own that shoots the fastest use on ijn destroyers such as the 76 aa main gun and 120mm main gun.
Just to add on a bit for the RU 130mm, if you're in a map with a ton of heavy armored targets, it would be wise not to use that as it quickly turns to one of the lowest dps DD guns for gunboat Destroyers to use

You didn't mention purple alternatives for Firepower-Focused Destroyer's main gun for those of us that missed the event guns and don't have the gold twin 127mm gun.
I would think so. Since Destroyers have a low AA to begin with, they do not need to care about how good the AA gun is. Having the extra FP boost from the 134mm Twin High Angle is the best thing you can do in that slot and will be helpful for any firepower-focused destroyer.
One issue I have with this is when you differentiate the torpedo focused ships and the FP focused ships. I understand the situation with Laffey and Z23 but how could you tell that yukikaze was a Torpedo ship by looking at her skills? I think the only giveaway was the EX Barrage?
Another giveaway is the overall stats. As I stated in the video, torpedo-focused destroyers generally have less than 100 FP at level 100, while having 400-500 TRP. This applies to Yukikaze, since at level 120, she caps at around 72 FP but 500+ TRP. You can also tell by what faction they're from. Some factions have distinct traits like how most Eagle Union ships have good AA, and Sakura Empire vanguards have good TRP.
Quick question, hopefully you see this a month from upload date. Guides I've been reading have said use the Single 127mm Main Gun so I've been using that for a long time now. Should I use that or the Twin 127mm MK12 Dual Gun? And explain why please. I only have these two purples. Thanks and great guides overall!
Single 127mm - more well rounded, higher reload but lower damage, better for ships with good skills or all out assaults Twin 127mm - higher damage, slower firerate, better for high FP destroyers

good guide, i think, though... man I have still so many questions. Where to begin... what about when youve just started 2 months ago and dont have all these things? There are so many different gears its mind boggling. All Im trying to figure out is what is ok to use and what is ok to scrap. I have 500 weapon boxes saved up but no space in my depot to open them :'( For example, for destroyers, I dont have enough repair kit aux gears to equip all with those. or fire extinguishers etc. Also I use them on aviation ships because they tend to get destroyed quickly if I use smaller fleets to reduce costs. The flagships are in the most danger in my experience. But auto loaders, fuel filters, radars, boilers.... there's so many things its hard to know what I should and shouldnt use. Im not trying to be super competitive or anything, but it would be bad if I scrapped something I need, or am using something that is terrible. The gear in this game is so confusing, Ive been looking but cant find a clear-cut guide anywhere that says "if you dont care too much about min-maxing, just scrap this, this and this and use this, this and this on detroyers, carriers, etc". Either only 2 or 3 items get a highlight, or it goes super in-depth about everything. I'm basically looking for a rule of thumb, I guess? The gear is so overwhelming that it turns me off from engaging with it, but obviously I do want to open my weapon boxes so I can get rid of greys and blues I dont need (I mostly use fire extuinguiser and repair kit and boiler blues. Things that give me HP. The rest I am thinking of scrapping. Though ill keep the torps too as I have like, 1 rainbow, 1 yellow, 1 purple and 1 blue, the rest is all grey?). Also should i use my good torps on my submarines first, or on my DD? I use my rainbow and gold torps on a retrofitted DD with high torp stat currently, but all my submarines are trash as trade-off. EDIT: which purples can i scrap?
1. I have a guide that tells what to scrap and what not to scrap. Submarines and Destroyers don't use the same torpedoes. The only similarity is that they can both equip the Rainbow Pure Oxygen torpedo, which is a late game item you can buy from the core data shop for a massive 1500 core.

Z46 is another interesting case. Just like Shirakami Fubuki, she has good torpedo but also has a FP increasing skill. In Z46's case, she does very well with both a fast firing gun like the Twin 100mm and the 76mm AA gun, or also the more damaging Twin 127mm is a good choice too if you want to trade out some EX Barrage for HE damage. The fast firing guns are good on her because her EX Barrage shoots out AP, which will be buffed from her skill. It's up to you for what main gun you want to put on her. Fast-firing Twin 100mm/76mm AA gun -> more AP damage through EX barrage or Slower firing Twin 127mm -> More HE damage from main gun, but EX barrage takes longer to charge up so less AP damage
Coming late to the party... I just started playing the game 2 days ago.... I've been farming 2-3 because I wanted to get some fire extinguishers... however, I cannot equip them on any ships, heck, I don't even see them listed when I look at my Depot > Gears. Same thing with the Air Radar that you get from 2-3.... where are they? I know I got some, I saw them in my Reward list after farming the level... What am I missing? Thanks to anyone who takes the time to show the way to this noob... :-)
Way late to the party, but if you're grinding a level for gear, you're only getting prints rather than the actual equipment. Go to Depot > Craft (on the bottom of the screen towards the center/left) and look for the equipment in question. If it's blue/rare extinguishers, I think you only need 5 prints per item.
I'd probably go with one just because they can die so fast from machine gun airplane fire. With one you can focus Ryuuhou's single heals on her and keep your destroyer sustained for much longer.
Luffey best DD change my mind XD also i don't know if it's a good idea to go for the highest FP gun's because they have the lowest fire rate and ships that have skill like luffey's first skill that has a small chance to activate every time she fires it's better to go for a gun that has good FP and FR (fire rate)

You forgot to mention something very important about the intel report: DDs have abysmal FP and they have very little options regarding Aux gears that increase their FP. The only one I can remember that DDs can equip is the auto reloader which only gives 8 FP even when enhanced 10 times and RLD which doesn't really matter that much when it comes to DPS. The Intel report on the other hand can be equipped on ALL ship types and gives an additional 20 FP, a MASSIVE BOOST to FP for DDs which means that this is THE best offensive Aux gear for main gun focused DDs such as Laffey, Nimi and Tashkent bar none. The intel report is basically the Rainbow Dildos for gun focused Destroyers. P. S. your voice feels very relaxing for some reason, I can just listen to you talking without watching the screen and still enjoy the video. Also, congrats on 1k subs! 😁😁😁

For ijn destroyers like ayanami use the fastest firing guns you have as you want them to activate the all out assault the fastest

The flagships are in the most danger in my experience.
But auto loaders, fuel filters, radars, boilers.... there's so many things its hard to know what I should and shouldnt use.
Im not trying to be super competitive or anything, but it would be bad if I scrapped something I need, or am using something that is terrible.
The gear in this game is so confusing, Ive been looking but cant find a clear-cut guide anywhere that says "if you dont care too much about min-maxing, just scrap this, this and this and use this, this and this on detroyers, carriers, etc". Either only 2 or 3 items get a highlight, or it goes super in-depth about everything. I'm basically looking for a rule of thumb, I guess? The gear is so overwhelming that it turns me off from engaging with it, but obviously I do want to open my weapon boxes so I can get rid of greys and blues I dont need (I mostly use fire extuinguiser and repair kit and boiler blues. Things that give me HP. The rest I am thinking of scrapping. Though ill keep the torps too as I have like, 1 rainbow, 1 yellow, 1 purple and 1 blue, the rest is all grey?).
Also should i use my good torps on my submarines first, or on my DD? I use my rainbow and gold torps on a retrofitted DD with high torp stat currently, but all my submarines are trash as trade-off.

1. I have a guide that tells what to scrap and what not to scrap. Anything I didn't say in the video is covered by the friendly people in the comments section in that video.

2. Submarines and Destroyers don't use the same torpedoes. The only similarity is that they can both equip the Rainbow Pure Oxygen torpedo, which is a late game item you can buy from the core data shop for a massive 1500 core.

Any tips on z46 ander? she likes to proc the ex barrage and it is composed of ap attack and torpedoes, and she likes to take out planes to buff her fr
Z46 is another interesting case. Just like Shirakami Fubuki, she has good torpedo but also has a FP increasing skill. In Z46's case, she does very well with both a fast firing gun like the Twin 100mm and the 76mm AA gun, or also the more damaging Twin 127mm is a good choice too if you want to trade out some EX Barrage for HE damage. The fast firing guns are good on her because her EX Barrage shoots out AP, which will be buffed from her skill.
It's up to you for what main gun you want to put on her.
Fast-firing Twin 100mm/76mm AA gun -> more AP damage through EX barrage
or
Slower firing Twin 127mm -> More HE damage from main gun, but EX barrage takes longer to charge up so less AP damage

Coming late to the party... I just started playing the game 2 days ago.... I've been farming 2-3 because I wanted to get some fire extinguishers... however, I cannot equip them on any ships, heck, I don't even see them listed when I look at my Depot > Gears. Same thing with the Air Radar that you get from 2-3.... where are they? I know I got some, I saw them in my Reward list after farming the level... What am I missing? Thanks to anyone who takes the time to show the way to this noob... :-)
Way late to the party, but if you're grinding a level for gear, you're only getting prints rather than the actual equipment. Go to Depot > Craft (on the bottom of the screen towards the center/left) and look for the equipment in question. If it's blue/rare extinguishers, I think you only need 5 prints per item.

I'd probably go with one just because they can die so fast from machine gun airplane fire. With one you can focus Ryuuhou's single heals on her and keep your destroyer sustained for much longer.

Luffey best DD change my mind XD also i don't know if it's a good idea to go for the highest FP gun's because they have the lowest fire rate and ships that have skill like luffey's first skill that has a small chance to activate every time she fires it's better to go for a gun that has good FP and FR (fire rate)

haha lol, I love his videos! After I retrofitted Laffey, I kind of disregarded Nimi/Z23, and at this time, she's the only starter ship I have not retrofitted yet. I'll definitely get to it eventually, but my gold is kind of low right now.

You forgot to mention something very important about the intel report:
DDs have abysmal FP and they have very little options regarding Aux gears that increase their FP. The only one I can remember that DDs can equip is the auto reloader which only gives 8 FP even when enhanced 10 times and RLD which doesn't really matter that much when it comes to DPS.
The Intel report on the other hand can be equipped on ALL ship types and gives an additional 20 FP, a MASSIVE BOOST to FP for DDs which means that this is THE best offensive Aux gear for main gun focused DDs such as Laffey, Nimi and Tashkent bar none. The intel report is basically the Rainbow Dildos for gun focused Destroyers.

also worth noting that if i remember correctly, the quad gold homing torps actually outperform the quint ones, they got more dmg per torp and a faster reload making them usable than the quint ver
Totally relevant note. I should have elaborated a bit more on my thoughts on each of the magnet torps, as the quad is actually very solid as you can see of how I put it on my Laffey and Tashkent.
