    FYI: It seems the "odd repeating dips (in FPS)" I describe at 25:00 are not generated by the game or by the console. Looks like they are an artefact generated by my Elgato capture card.

    So much nostalgia in one video. Not just the game either. Theres something about stumbling on a video i didnt search for, about a guy who isnt following a trend or click baiting for views, whos just making a video he wanted to make because its something he cares about. No over the top flashy intros, no list of social media links telling us to follow all of them or giveaways and no ad reads. Just a well spoken man showing us interesting technical facts about a game we all love. My man, you made a better video than you think.

    I miss old Bethesda, come to think of it I miss gaming the way it was back then, Starfield was a massive disappointment for me and I just don't trust Bethesda to deliver anymore for ES6, such a shame.

      Considering most of the people who made those games have left the company, its no surprise they make games differently. The Imperial Septum has been sitting on my desk since the day I got it. It looks old and worn now, like a coin should as I stare at it in my hand now. :)

For me my comfort game has to be Skyrim, it has been probably for about 9 years now, the amount of times I've played it & fallen asleep to it is silly at this point, but so nice hahaha! Keep up the good work man!

    Very interesting video, but at the end you also could have put a video of oblivion with enb and distant LOD, so that we could have seen the absoluty peak that is possible with oblivion :)

      I did think about it 😁 I collected some footage of my modded Oblivion setup (though this one does not have ENB) which would have visually blown all other footage out of the water... but that wasn't the point of the video so I left it. Cheers!

      You're welcome. I've been using a mod for Oblivion on PC (NorthernUI) which provides Xbox controller support. Can also (optionally) make the game's interface look more like Skyrim's. Controller support is not perfect but its there. Ironically, if playing on Steam you need to turn Steam controller support off for it to work :)

  • @waxedearth5425
    @waxedearth5425 6 месяцев назад +1

    Hearing that first musical score took me back. My first play through of this game was nothing short of a magical experience for me. I also recall the XBOX360 version had HDR lighting.

    • @ramnexus
      @ramnexus  6 месяцев назад

      I know the PC version has HDR as an option. But if it is on the Xbox version then it’s always on as there’s no toggle option.
      it’s not the HDR as we know it today on modern TVs and monitors though. Same name but different effect: it was a way of mimicking what our eyes do when we move from dark to light areas, slowly adjusting.
      Cheers!

  • @ImperialDiecast
    @ImperialDiecast 6 месяцев назад +2

    30:03 i think on your pc you forgot to turn on HDR lighting. which does not work together with anti aliasing, so its either or, and you probably made sure to turn on AA (although its not needed for 4k) so HDR was switched off. If HDR was switched on, the PC footage would have looked just as nicely lit and colourful as the console footage to its left.

    • @ramnexus
      @ramnexus  6 месяцев назад +1

      Yes, you're right. I have footage of me setting it up on PC. HDR was off as I had it in 8xAA ... and of course playing it at native 4K on a 4K monitor kinda negates the need for that. I know you can enable AA via the nvidia console instead and keep HDR on but i left the console alone as I wanted it as 'vanilla' as possible. Thanks. Lesson learned.

      @ramnexus I think there are so many great old titles for you to explore - from Bethesda, morrowind and new Vegas
      Legacy of kain series
      Gothic 1,2
      Neverwinter series
      Deus ex
      Baldurs Gate
      Turok
      Quake and Doom
      Generally there are a lot of old school titles.
      What are you interested in yourself? Consoles only or PC as well?

    • @ramnexus
      @ramnexus  6 месяцев назад

      I think one thing I can bring to YT is the analysis tools… and I spend a lot of time doing background research on the game. So you got me thinking of NWN 1 & 2 and how they were received and improved over time. I played them a bunch.
      Both consoles and PC. If the game is on both then a comparison may make for a more interesting story.
      Thanks for the suggestions. Cheers!

    With regards to loading times, I would have liked to to see an external SSD or HD comparison thrown into the mix; as I remember the Ascent and Prey 2017 having *really* long load times on the Xbox One, but with the external SSD it was nowhere near as bad (as noted in Digital Foundry) as using the internal HD.

    • @ramnexus
      @ramnexus  6 месяцев назад +1

      Good point. I did think about that. I do use an external SSD for some Xbox games (not Oblivion!). I also have a platter HDD in my PC for backups, so i could have gone to town! It was just down to time and getting the video done!

    Very quality video for such a small channel. Pretty much Digital Foundry quality. I just put my old 360 disc into my Series X and enjoyed the game. The Xbox 360 disc isn't used as copy protection. It's used as a key to play the digital download version of the game for free. There are three types of keys Microsoft checks before you are allowed to play the game. The key that that you purchased in the Microsoft store when you download the digital version of the game, or the Gamepass subscription key, and then the Xbox 360 game disc that is proof that you own a copy of the game.

      That’s good info to know.
      After I recorded that part I realised I’d used the wrong term. I didn’t bother to re-record it as the key point was that the disk was still required, which I’d mentioned.
