- I'll say it here and now. This is one of my favorite JRPGs ever and is a tremendous bounceback performance for Square Enix. Every ounce of criticism poured into the original game is fully addressed or improved upon in this game. The main issue? Well, many people refused to play it thanks to the (in some cases) undeserved hatred of Final Fantasy 13. So, continuing with our trilogy retrospective it's time we look at the very best that I believe this trilogy has to offer.

FXIII-2 STANS RISE UP! In all seriousness, I really love seeing this game getting some well deserved appreciation. Thank you for making this video. Similarly to you, this game was both my first FF and my first JRPG. Just from the intro alone I was completely hooked into the experience, even though the combat system was something completely alien and strange to me. It absolutely changed my way of perceiving and enjoying videogames; I had never played anything so ambitious, so focused on its characters and story telling and, honestly, so very much out there with its setting, scenarios and aesthetic. To this day it is still one of my favorite games ever and I genuinely see FFXIII-2 as one of the best games in the franchise. Sure, it might not be perfect, but it is overall a pretty fun package with endearing protagonists, a great antagonist, a festival of bangers for a OST (also one of the best videogame soundtracks ever imo) and a phenomenal ending. It also has fun features like the paradox endings, the minigames, the live triggers, the monster catching mechanic, the QTE's that function as finishers in boss battles and the recaps that appear every time you get back to the game voiced by different characters.
It was not my first by I totally agree on all your points. After many years I am replaying it and cannot believe how good this game is. I like it even more than I remember. It's also a huge step up from the first game and the monster catching is super fun. It's certainly the best out of the 3
The FF13 series is what got me into Final Fantasy and other rpg games
I still believe Caius is one of the best villains in the entire series and no one can convince me otherwise.
Agreed, kinda shocked his name didn't make it into the video, but I guess that was for spoiler reasons. He's one of the few villains out there that seems like a real person.
Not reached that far yet but doubtful he tops Shinra and Sephiroth's story or Kefka or Sin

@@serge2cool If you play this game without letting the nostalgia for past Final Fantasy speaks for you, you see that Caius is indeed one of the greatest villains in the series. I was surprised when I first played XIII-2. It really has a great story.
@@serge2cool Sin is such an apples to oranges comparison to Caius and most other FF villains considering he's really more of a force of nature than anything. I will say Caius BTFOs Sephiroth and Shinra though. I'd say Kefka is still better than Caius but there's still room on the podium for both and they have different appeals honestly, Kefka while having serious moments is more entertaining to watch kinda darkly humourous, whereas Caius is pretty much 100% serious. Personally though I'd rank Kuja as the best in the series by a mile.
This is such a great game and the 13 trilogy is actually solid. 13-2 being the best FF in awhile. A lot of people hate on the series and never played them or even bother trying. Also linear doesn't mean bad
I liked 13, I just felt the pacing was bad at the beginning, the gameplay is too broken up by story, when it should let you play around abit more, after the original 10-15 hours I enjoyed it much more
Disliked and hated 13 and 13-3 but 13-2 is easily top 5 FF and honestly I might even slide it into the top 3 above FF10

So glad that FF XIII-2 is finally getting the re-evaluation it deserves. This game really makes a case for JRPG’s being shorter because this game is all killer no filler. Just a blast throughout, killer soundtrack, great art design and the paradigm system at its finest. The only negative is that this game indirectly ruined the perfect ending XIII had but when the trade off is one of the low key best FF games it’s totally worth it.
Good point. Very few JRpgs are no filler. last two I played which fit that statement is this and Lost Odyssey.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 is honestly in my top 5 Final Fantasy games (probably fourth behind VI, IV and IX), but I don't really hear much positivity about it online, so I'm really happy to see someone else who loves it like I do. It does so many interesting and unique things, fixes a lot of problems that XIII had, the OST is amazing, the villain is great and I actually really like Serah as the lead. I could probably go on about the game all day, but your video covers most of it really well. The game deserves to be much more popular than it is and I will continue to shout from the mountaintops that it is the most overlooked Final Fantasy in the series.

This was the first game I impulse bought. I was literally just walking around a Target when I saw the shiny cover of this game. Being like 13 yrs old I asked my mom for it, she surprisingly said yes, and what followed was a really fun video game. Only years later did I even hear about how widely panned the first game was. I just saw the screenshots on the back and it looked sick. After watching this vid, I honestly wanna do another run and see if I still think the same a decade later.
Just started this last week! Finally put in the effort to beat XIII after the first video and it ended up being way better than my first attempt years ago with your perspective informing the playthrough. Loving the sequel so far!

I'm revisiting ff games and after replaying 13 I think im moving it near the top of my favorite ff games. The difference now is I understood the lore and read the prequel book and it really made me love the characters. That being said ive never played 13-2 so im looking forward to it.

Even though I've only managed to beat XIII-2, I do know the entire trilogy in and out thanks to it being a special interest of mine. Hearing someone speak so highly of my favorite entry in the trilogy really made my day and I appreciate you creating such a well crafted video covering it. This game will forever be my favorite FF game, and nobody can stop me.

I LOVE monster taming mechanics. I love that you can pick and choose which monsters you want to use in your paradigms, and some are better than others. So you can start with monster A as a healer, then later find a more powerful monster B and swap A for B. I feel like 13-2 and Lightning Returns took some elements from FFX-2, but polished and refined them for the vastly different world and story. FF13-2 is vastly underrated and often gets overlooked because of the negative opinion so many have for the first in the series. Thanks for highlighting what mades FF13-2 such a fantastic game!

As a big fan of 13, I've always been interested in this game - but I've never played it. This was the first final fantasy game i had ever owned, this is what opened my gate to some of the final fantasy games, 13-2 has always been my favorite (i was actually talking about it earlier with someone on discord which is great i found this) Noel kreiss is one of my favorite characters, without getting into too much detail here, his name is actually gonna also be my name in a few years! And caius shares VA with my favorite sonic character, infinite the jackal.
I even got the game for pc and still own the xbox game box that has the little book with small info on characters.
I love this game and im happy someone else has something positive to say on it (this includes the comments too)
bro i am a old school ff player ive been playing final fantasy for the past 25 years. Trust me, FFXIII-2 is maybe one of the best final fantasy game they ever released. People hate on it because its pink, has a girl and is not ff7. I loved ff7 back then and it did blow my mind, but the xiii series is absolutely elite in my opinion
I'm old too gaming for longer and FF13-2 is easily top 5 FF and might actually be 3rd if I replace FFX.
Dislike the other 2 in the trilogy which makes it an even bigger anomaly for me.

Had absolutely no problem with it, loved the Story, loved the Characters, loved the Visuals, had no problem with the game Fighting mechanics.
And the Visuals for all three FF13 games are just gorgeous, some of the best on PS3/XBOX360.
Wish the new PS+ would add these FF13 games to the Extra game catalog.

i remember when 13-2 first came out, i didn't enjoy it at all. but that was because i didn't understand how the game was played and i struggled a lot. gave it another chance last year and i 100% everything in the game. i love it and appreciate it a lot more now and it's definitely become a favourite of mine! i enjoyed it so much and i agree it fixed and improved on a lot of things from 13!

I just replayed XIII-2 a few months back. I loved this one.
Writting in 2023: There are so many open world and service video games that LINEAR sounds just PERFECT.
This game was pretty good. I remember enjoying myself a lot. I remember absolutely loving plains of eternity on the ost. Would often change the weather in that area just to hear that song.
I bloody loved this game, 👏 from someone that loved the first game equally!
Something about the experience I remember is the collectors edition was just supreme, the box had a high quality feel to it, and lots of interesting minimalistic details! And the guide book was equally as good, nice soft minimalistic cover and packed with interesting details! 👏👏

Thank you!!! I played XIII at launch when I was in high school and enjoyed it a lot. Didn’t play XIII-2 til I was in college and I absolutely loved it!! One thing you didn’t mention was that this game has one of the coolest villains in the whole franchise!

People hated 13 for two reasons:
People annoyed the hell out of online forums because they only wanted a ff7 remake, anything else was considered a waste of time.
Early RUclipsrs realized that the angrier they got, the more viral they would become, so exaggerating flaws just to get shared.

Not sure if it was the soundtrack, character designs, environment, exploration, I was just gobbling it all up and being like “I love everything about this” I think I’ve beaten all games in the XIII trilogy at least 5 times each, it’s my favorite FF for sure

The Trilogy was and still is one of mine and my husbands favorite FF’s. I love the storyline and how well they ran the same thread through all three games. It was one of the nicest fleshed out stories in my opinion in the more recent games.
Does that change the fact I love 7, 8, 9, 10 and 15? Nope. I think they’ve created some seriously amazing worlds and storylines in each.
My favorite moment in 13-2 was getting through the crazy encounter rates in Academia 400 and Augusta Tower and finally fixing things and getting to Academia 4XX, with one of the most beautiful futuristic cityscapes in any media ever that you could explore freely and safely. I also really enjoyed a lot of the paradox endings, though the one where Snow comes in and saves the day and rides off with Serah was funny just for being ironically his best moment (that didn't actually happen).
I love me ff13-2 I just beat the dlc and man GILGAMESH WAS ONE OF THE HARDEST BOSSES I HAVE EVER FOUGHT TOOK ME 20 TRIES TO BEAT HIM AND I FINALLY DID I WAS SOOO HAPPY

Just finishing up a replay of XIII, but will move onto this one next and it's new to me. Not sure where all the misunderstanding of the paradigm system or frankly the story in XIII came from. Both were (excessively) signposted.
Yeah matty you’ve got it on the spot imo about both games. They just make me have fun. It’s got a bunch of different aspects and the music is just alway a bop. Characters like Caius, Sazh, Noel, Serah, the list goes on, are just a pleasure to see on screen and a joy to go through the game learning about them and seeing what they do. You Pretty much said everything I think about the game. About to play LR but I don’t think it’ll get up as high as the first two 13’s. It is great to see 13-2 get more respect as I feel it’s really overlooked in the grand scheme of games. Absolutely solid video👌

this is one of my favorites. i loooooved time traveling and searching for new petiods to explore.
I know the plot is all over the place and it kinda doesn't make sense sometimes. But at its core, I think is a really awesome game. Music is great, gameplay is improved and for the time of release, graphics were amazing.

Is my favorite in the trilogy. Also love XIII and XIII-2, im so glad that there's people that really love those game as much as i do.
I started playing through this trilogy with a friend because I love it so much, 13-2 in particular. I was really excited to revisit this one. Recently finished 13-2 and we both kinda had a really strange reaction to it. We both left it a little frustrated at how things were handled and I felt super odd because I had never felt this way about the game before. Admittedly, we skipped a few locations and time periods for streamlining the story a little, which I think really contributed to that. But a few days after we finished, I booted it up a separate save, visited a random location, and was INSTANTLY reminded why I love the game so much. Super weird roller coaster, but everything I ended up feeling frustrated through my second playthrough was just gone by just listening to the music, sitting in the environments, and revisiting the battles. Very powerful experience, and I'm glad people love this game like I do.
I never liked how they retconned the ending of 13, but mechanically this was my favorite game in the 13 trilogy, especially using a creature as the 3rd party member.
If you liked that Pokémon style system, play World of Final Fantasy
2023 would've been perfect to put some respect on Lightning Returns.. The LR retrospective must be done nonetheless!
Only getting to pulse or cocoon (or wherever the open world starts) I liked hearing what you had to say about 13-2 and was eager to hear what you had to say about lightning returns, until I realized you just uploaded this lol.
This was the first JRPG I'd liked in ages. Really felt like a return to what I'd always loved about the genre.
Beat XIII's main story back on PS3 but just now replaying it to 100% on Series X. Can't wait to get play this game for the first time right afterwards.

Bought them for my 360 and still wierdly enjoy these games. My wife gave me ff13-2 special edition on release for my birthday back then and still have it in my display case
I remember getting this from best buy for 15 bucks. The book edition with the little book it had it think it was lightening diary. I still have it. The first game and the third
as the last proper final fantasy in a classical sense, this game has a very special place in my heart. i like 13 a lot. but i love the carp out of 13-2. what a ride

FF 13-2 was what brought me back to the franchise after 10. Didn’t really get into the mmo stuff once they started down that and didn’t pay attention for awhile just happen to play with a friend and we went through the whole story without knowing what to expect. Honestly great stand alone game!! Amazing music!!! Really fun combat!!! Hope you continue on your final fantasy journey. Also would you ever try “Skies of Arcadia”?

I really loved the game and got so lost in it when it released. But I literally got lost at one point that I didn’t know what to do or where to go, the whole time travel system was sooo confusing for young me.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 is my favorite game of that trilogy too!! I had a ton of fun collecting all the monster crystals and racing chocobos and making really sick weapons and making some amazing paradigms with UBER RARE monsters that look sick!!! I love this one!
Yep i totally agree! FFXIII-2 is my favorite Final Fantasy so far! And i am glad other people agree with me (I played every single FF game except for VIII & IX). This game was so good i played it 4 times, each time building the characters in a different way. The OST of this game is enough for anyone to play it. Best OST in any video game for me. I couldn’t entirely get into 13, but loved this one. Noel was great, and how they treated him in Lightning Returns is a shame.
Yeah, I felt like someone else had directed the characters in Lightning Returns. At least when writing Noel, he was a totally different character from the previous and it way out of character for Noel.
Only Noel? Literally every character is completely and utterly f*cked after FF13-1. Specially Saz. That's why many consider FF13-2 and LR "Toriyama's Lighting Fanfic". It is painfully clear he was down bad for her, he even went as far as to bringing her to the real world in LR.
Edit: Just in case people think I'm joking or making up stuff: "Famitsu has reported that during a Q&A session with the Lightning Returns staff, Toriyama admitted to wanting to marry Lightning"

For me it was a good game, XIII in my opinion is a far superior game though. FFXIII-2 did some things I hated. Like the random encounters vs seeing your opponents in the environment, the story for the original was much better, and the characters were actually awesome. XIII is my all time favorite JRPG, and it was my first FF game, and to be fair, i haven't liked any of the others ive played (7,10).
Super interesting take. First I played was 7 as a kid and it's in my goat games list lol. I LOVED 13 though, I'll never understand the hate it got. Never played 13-2, maybe I should try and play it
Very underated game. Much better then part 1 with a pretty crazy story and better combat system.
This seems like a good iteration on FF13 from the way you described it. I've heard nothing but good things so I should definitely give it a go someday.

I played XIII up to Gran Pulse, then stopped. I'm glad I gave XIII-2 a chance, because it improved everything and the soundtrack is among the series' best. It really gave me an ethereal feeling of journeying through time.
I played 13-2 loved it, then the series came to GP and tried playing the other 2 but like you I stopped when it's supposed to get good.. it bored me so much. 13-3 was way worse and only played it for a few hours.
@@RUclipsCensors Playing through XIII at first I was hoping for more exploration from the corridor, but I think I actually ended up enjoying that part, the story and the varied locations and switching characters. Once I reached Gran Pulse, it became clear that I would have to grind for 30-40+ hours, killing the same monsters to upgrade weapons and roles. Too "exhausting". I think I just switched it off and ended up watching the FMV RUclips movie to finish the story. Maybe I'll do the same for XIII-3.
Currently replaying the first game. Just grinding in hope's dad's place lol. I've got the entire trilogy on ps3... never played part 3 so I'm going through them one at a time.
This was such an exciting time in my gamer life. I had been playing games since the original NES but I there was a time period around PS2 that I stopped playing games. I picked up an xbox 360 for Final Fantasy XIII though and that got me back into gaming and I never stopped after that. I loved xiii-2 but the original is still my favorite of the three.
I wish these would get at least a HD re-release, the 13 games are the only mainline games not to get some sort of re-release and the pc ports could use a lot of work
I don’t think it’s a single disk because of better compression software. They made a choice to have far less fmv sequences that the og XIII was chock full of. Same for lightning returns.
Funny you say that, Star Ocean 4: The Last Hope, was my introduction to jrpgs but FF-13 was my introduction to the final fantasy series. I loved 13-2 and even platinum'd it but the the only thing I hated about 13 was the whole if the character you control dies, game over and the whole you don't earn gil from killing monsters. But those were both fixed in 13-2. Which is why it's my favorite. Lightning Returns was great but it was held back by the time limit mechanic even if I understand it but it felt like the game itself was a timed-trail and not an actual game.
Side note, Persona 3: FES was my introduction to that series and is my favorite of all of them and the whole "metaverse" idea in P5 was done earlier in P3 FES with the end part of it when they fight the other version of the MC (forgot what he was called).......also sad ending that made me upset but still happy with what happened to him knowing he is the strongest persona user in my opinion lol
Man the menus in 13 were just sooooooo great, the animations, the design, the sounds, everything
I love the entire trilogy but XIII-2 is my favorite. Also the one thing that cannot be denied about the XIII games is the soundtrack...OMG the music is incredible.

I believe matty the aggressive mix's are also in the same locations in their alternates, it's not just the battles. But the alternate timelines for example.
This game honestly looks and seems pretty sick. I’ve never played any of the XIII’s, while I have played all the games leading up to it and since.
Bought it really cheap as I'd been hesitant after 13 as I wasn't a massive fan of that game but got round to playing 13-2 eventually and absolutely loved it and played it so much even buying some of the dlc lol its one of my favourite FF games.

Just bought a 360 and this is one of tge games that was loaded on it. I remember I really liked this buy never finished it. This video and your othr retro games youve made videos for Ive gotten basically all of them preloaded alomg with some couch coops for me and the boy. Not enough on my ps5. Had to go back some years for some classics and couch coops. Only paid 100 bucks for it with 30 some games and 2 conrrollers. Highly recomend gettingba 360 and adding all these games for free :)
Great game that still looks and plays fine! I'd love to see a remastered trilogy on PS5. Still haven't finished the third one.
Lightning Returns was definitely an adjustment. The garbs and figuring out the balance on your time constraints was tricky for me to adjust to.
It’s definitely an awesome game to complete , and the ending is really great.
I love the areas in lightning returns. Such great areas and i just wish we had a way to explore and play unrestricted on time
I have fond memories with all of these games. I played this one with a close friend I had at the time and we would switch off playing. I’d look up the solutions to the puzzles and he’d do them. Well, I fucked all that up in the end, but the times before that were really good. It’s a shame, but I did it and it’s done now.
