    Well, it’s been winter on our rural property for a couple of months now but THE BIG STORM finally hit us! This is the winter of a lifetime (for our area)! We’ve been DUMPED on by Mother Nature, and she had good timing as we JUST got a snowplow to share amongst our friends! In this video we want to share with you how we’re keeping up with snow removal on our property. Having a plow certainly helps, but it doesn’t eliminate the need for additional techniques to remove our snow that includes a little elbow grease. That’s okay… it keeps us fit… but most importantly, we’re doing just fine when many people are snowed in or having damage done to their homes! We hope this video inspires you to find ways to make snow management on your property more doable!

    Growing up in the Rockies above Boulder, everyone helped everyone or nobody survived. I can't tell you how many wood cutting parties we went to, nights my dad spent plowing gulches so people could move around before the plows got to them, and neighbors my mom helped after having surgery or babies. Everyone benefits!

    It was very nice of you to give them a plow. A misunderstanding of expectations may create a wedge. It's best to give a gift without any expectations. That way you aren't disappointed when they fail to do what you thought they should be doing.
    For example, how long would they be expected to do certain things. If they don't once, does it create a situation? Misunderstandings can cause a lot of grief. Nothing is truly free. Maybe neighbors could kick in some gas money or he could turn it into a little business? But it was a very nice gesture.

    Hi there, Owen Anderson here from Tacoma, WA. To save the headache and back ache of plowing the snow, there's something people have done in the past. They make a copper piping coil (worm) which goes around the base of their heating stove, oil furnace, etc. then they run discharge pipe underground (4", 3") in their walking path. The pipes are charged with water, is charged with 10% rubbing alcohol, 90% tap water. The end result is melted snow because of 42* ground above the pipe. My grandfather did this so my grandmother would never slip while walking to her vehicle back in the 1950's--1990's. I love what you're doing, your videos are awesome, and you are inspiring me to do something similar!

    Using a front hitch as the mount makes for a great system. Especially if your sharing with neighbors. PLFL you could even put a hitch on your truck and plow your own driveway in the future. Love the versatility.

    As a retired snowplow owner, I would have looked at a professional model. I hope you have some spare angle iron and a welder handy. Be sure to check welds and bolts after each usage and get some ski wax for the blade.

    Hey guys,
    There are small plows you can attach to your truck or Forester. Maybe the truck, if it's 2WD, isn't your first choice. But I have a Forester too and it's pretty good - not fabulous - in snow. If you have an LSD on yours, it may be significantly better. But Nordic Plow makes some small models that your Fozzie could horse around with no trouble.

    2600 + 200.00 reciever mount +tax is a lot of coin for that. For the same price as one of those, you can find a used "real" plow that will do a much better job and last longer.

    • @eosjoe565
      @eosjoe565 7 лет назад +2

      I agree. That plow was wiggling around like a wet noodle even in that light snow. I hope it works out for them but having a single point attachment on a 2" receiver hitch just doesn't seem like it will hold up to the side forces created by the plow. A plow can be very hard on a pickup. I've seen much beefier mounts get turned into a pretzel.

    Your lucky with that tiny little driveway. I have a 2 1/2 mile road from the county maintained rd. 1 mile of my road is a lot of steep hills with a big drop off that has not been well maintained by the neighbors. And my actual drive way is an easement rd that has some good hills and tight growth on either side.
    When I bought my used truck for my homestead, I actually got one with a snowplow included. However due to the road condition, and being called away to house sit my brother's home when the snows started to pile up, I opted not to winter over on my property this 1st year.
    This spring I am going to be doing a lot of work on the property to get started on building a home, and to do that I am going to be doing road work to get the access road in much better shape. As well as building a road to the top of one of the hills on my property.

    • @purelivingforlife
      @purelivingforlife  7 лет назад +8

      It's not all luck. We chose to avoid long, private drives for just those reasons. We just don't have enough tools and don't expect others to make up for our inadequacy. Our neighbors have helped a time or two, but we aren't above scooping. Did it all the rest of the year. We attempted to plow out a new neighbor who lives about 15 miles away last night after dark who hasn't plowed in days and has a 500 yard drive with a small land bridge. It was just too deep, too heavy. Gave up when the berms got over 5' high. They're going to need a blower or dozer to get that driveway clear. Rough start to their off grid homestead journey. Thankfully they're well stocked with fuel, wood, food and internet. :)

    • @theineffablehomestead3378
      @theineffablehomestead3378 7 лет назад +2

      @ Pure Living, Yes I figured you planned your access when buying. I didn't mean you were just lucky to have such a short drive, I suspected that was intentional. That was just me being a bit envious of your short drive.
      For me, the benefits of 40 acres with a pond and no visible neighbors was just too much of a temptation. Other than the road access the property I bought is pretty much perfect and everything I had wanted. I had weighed the pros and cons, and the pros just outweighed the cons. While the long drive is annoying in the beginning, as I work on it and improve it, it will get less and less of a problem. As well as once I get the majority of my building and infrastructure in place, the road again becomes less issue as I will have less need of getting beg equipment up the road.

    • @theineffablehomestead3378
      @theineffablehomestead3378 7 лет назад +1

      @ Julie, the option to winter over at my brothers was always an option. Which was comforting to know I had the option. I would have liked to try to winter over a bit longer. I knew I was not fully prepared, as I had gotten the property only summer solstice, and really only got a trailer on the place in the fall. So I did not have a lot of preparations done for winter.
      But I could have likely stayed until January if my brother hadn't needed me to house sit right when the snows were just starting to stick. At that point it sort of cut me off from my plow. While I could have parked the plow at the bottom of the hill at a neighbor's, plowing uphill is not so easy. You really want to do the bulk of plowing down hill.
      So I ended up stay at my brother's earlier than planned, but nice to have that back up option.

    so gorgeous with the snow! it is unusually warm here in SW MO with many towns matching or surpassing their record high temps this week. I would kill for a good snowfall- all haven't gotten any this year. 🙁 fun video

    I have a 1/2 mile long driveway and I got it plowed once. I share with 2 other neighbors, one neighbor tried to plow for a short time with his 4 wheeler, the other just kept driving and packing it down. I decided to walk up hill the 1/2 mile, lost 8 pounds so far. Next year a snow plow.

    Neighbors taking care of neighbors, love it! Not sure what the cost is of the plow set up but not bad for a smaller plow. Look out for them stumps or big rocks because it may bend a light duty plow like that. Anyway, I'm sure you guys have already thought of these sort of things. The drone shots are looking great along with your editing, keep up the good work!

    Good kharma , and neighborly barter. My oldest son's best friend clears his neighbors driveway when it's deep enough to need snowblowing, and his own using the neighbors snowblower. The neighbor owns the snowblower and buys the gas. Win Win

    Looks a decent enough plow for the use you want it for.
    I couldn't see if the height was down on to fixed stops or if it had any depth wheels on the back of the blade ?
    Nice vid.

    Everybody is so critical about what you bought. I live in Idaho and would love to have a nice plow like that. Everyone wants to tell about the one THEY had that was stronger, bigger or painted prettier. It's looks fine will do the job it was intended to do. happy days

    Since I got the snow scoop, I stop paying someone to plow me out. I have the bent handle that is much easier than the one shown in this clip, I can get a bigger load with the new style. And, I use the scoop to bring in cut up tree trunks. I have a big woodstove that has a huge front opening that I just roll in the tree trunks. The scoop is useful for more than just snow scooping.

    The first drone/ plow shot was Awesome! When the music started playing, it was like, "oooo what's gonna happen next?" Money Shot! Great Job, Pilot! Those cinematics! Are you inspiring off grid livers or film makers?! Loved the video!

    Love the plow. I know I've probably missed the conversation, but would a snow blower help in the tighter areas? Being from the south, I have no idea.

    When I saw the first photo of the Chevy with your new plow I thought, Jess bought a new truck! Yay, but then I watched the video and at about 5:20 in the video he said he gave it to the neighbor. Living off grid means being self sufficient and having a tool like that has many uses on a property. I think the gesture is nice but having to depend on someone else to show up and plow is not. I have my own plow and like to plow with the storm, clean up when I move other vehicles, push back my snow banks, make openings for melting to run off, move snow from the garden area in the spring, move old snow banks in the spring, back drag the driveway to pull loose material back in place to mention a few. I wouldn't ask or expect anyone else to do these things for me with their truck and plow and I wouldn't want to be holding to have to do it for someone else. I don't think it's selfish it's just not for me. I hope everything works out for you but I would have kept it for myself... unless it's a business decision and a tax write off...

    I was totally confused after the video. I think I understand now. You were given a snow plow, and since it didn't fit your truck, gave it to your neighbor, who will plow your driveway for you. Yes?

      I think he gave it to that guy who may be in need of something to do. I sounded like several neighbors are going to benefit from his eleemosynary act greases the network he is involved. It probably frees him up for finishing the house too.

    At first I was going to say that money you spent on the Phantom 4 drone could have been better spent elsewhere. But after watching the footage of your property and the fact that you need something like that to produce your videos, I say good investment. It's just a shame that the Magic pro wasn't available at the time you decided to go out and buy one.
    Great job.
