Context for the Monsoon Speech: Basically Monsoon was like “You hide behind this facade of justice and defending the weak, but you’re actually a killer, just like us.” And Raiden was like “Hang on… Sam said something kinda similar… you’re right, I am, because I really love killing. But honestly I don’t need an excuse anymore, I can just kill because it’s fun! Lemme start now! With you!” And then Monsoon was like “You were supposed to have a mental breakdown oh god no-“ and then he died.
@@santiagobarreraruiz7280 The Smiling Friends fella, right? the guy who's in like a podium promoting nihilism and then starts crying when pointed at with a shotgun
Platinum really went and took the quiet part of Kojima games and plugged it into a stadium amp, and added a complex physics engine to turn your enemies into ground meats.
I love this game because it genuinely has some interesting ideas and themes but it's the furthest thing from pretentious about it. It's not afraid to use the stupidest premise possible and never winks to the audience or acknowledges the absurdity. A man made of magnets chadsplains memes to a cyborg ninja going through a mental breakdown about how many hearts he's ripped from the chests of potentially innocent men and it's delivered with zero cynicism or ironic intent.
MGR just leans into it unambiguously and shamelessly, and that's a huge part of why it's so loved. And it's all scored to some of the most fire music ever made by the guy who composed music for fucking Toontown. This game does not give a *single* fuck.
I love that it's very clear that Kojima just wanted to make the sickest action movie possible as well and made it happen, no matter how nonsensical. As bonkers as it is, it never feels like anything was phoned in - it feels like a passion project.
1:24:55 I just realized why he stopped to laugh. Because Raiden finally succeeded in dodging something that could've grazed his chin. His chin finally went unscathed.
Fun Fact: In japanese version of this game, every cyborg has white blood to show they are cyborgs/robots except Sam. The reason to emphasize that Sam is that GUY who barely has any enhancements except his red arm.
Who looks at white blood and thinks hmmm yes this is a good idea. Why not black or blue or green or literally any other color other than white or yellow or brown.
Senator Armstrong is unironically one of the greatest examples of a villain stealing the show and becoming iconic in the last hour of a game and with so little screentime. You can chew out hundred of memes from every cutscene he's in. And he's a legit great antagonist that challenges Raiden's ideals beyond the memes.
@@kaiserredpanda2101Well yeah, Raiden was insulting Armstrong with the suggestion that he played football at an Ivy League school (which wouldn’t be known for good football players, and would also be known for “elite” society members) and Armstrong retorts that he played at University of Texas, making it clear that his college of choice wasn’t the typical kind of institution for politicians to learn at, in order to show Raiden how he doesn’t think like a typical politician and just wants to burn the country down and restart it from the beginning instead of perpetuating its state and getting rich from the top of the pile.
It's worth noting that Sam is 98% human. the only non-human portion of his body is his right arm, which (spoilers) got cut off by Armstrong in the DLC. so ALL of Sam's reaction speed, his endurance, his skill and all of that- just him. no cyborg bits, no HUD, just raw human talent and spite.

I don't know if anyone's mentioned this or if someone explained it to Daniel, but in case you didn't know, the game isn't using the term "meme" in the modern internet usage. They're using the original defenition coined by Richard Dawkins in the 70's, essentially meaning "something that is imitated." So whenever the game mentions memes, it actually is refering to learned beliefs and behaviors. It just ends up being unintentionally hilarious because no one knows that defention and we just think theyre talking extremely seriously about the concept of dumb internet jokes.
I'm pretty sure RT is an English major, so he definitely knew about the original definition of meme. However, it's much funnier to assume they're talking about dumb internet jokes.
Funnily enough, the current use of meme is still correct. The game describes memes as "the DNA of the soul" (which is the iconic like everyone remembers) and also things handed down through a culture, rather than handed down through genetics. In a way, the internet jokes we have today are very much the DNA of our modern culture. Most people I know, at least, get their latest news by way of seeing a meme before they see the headline. They see a meme about a game, look into it and share it with others for better or for worse (both the meme itself and what it's referring to). TLDR: in a roundabout way, MGR is using the correct definition of meme as it pertains to its original definition AND it's modern connotation. Truly ahead of its time.
I really love that because Internet memes are basically like ideas that float around and also constitute cultural identity, Internet memes are the purest form of Richard Dawkins’s memes.
My favorite part of the stream was everyone talking about Raiden's eye makeup and heels and fancy nails, like for a stone cold killer he makes sure he goes into battle looking like a whole distraction for the girls and the gays
@@taylorcarpenter8290 honestly will never not find it funny how he was originally designed to be fanservice. anyway the things I would do to that man border on cartoonish. I'd probably get shredded by those nails but it'd be worth it.

The charges were dropped, of course. I assume they'll be carrying on the good work of police accountability: Keeping the public and courts accountable to the police!
52:26 So fun fact: the word meme has actually been around way longer than we realise. It's a term that basically means an idea or concept that gets spread from person to person. While we have come to ascociate it with jokes on the internet, it technically is accurate to what they are doing in the game.
A common example of a meme in the traditional sense is the idea of standing in a queue. Were it not for that shared concept, any process that involved multiple people having to wait for something would result in the physically strongest people bullying their way to the front. Since the meme of the "queue" has achieved widespread adoption, those processes are handled in a much more civilised fashion (most of the time at least).
I cannot get over the fact that, despite primarily not being made by Kojima (it was programmed by Platinum, the devs behind Bayonetta, working off an original concept given to them by Kojima Productions), this somehow manages to be the most Kojima game ever made.

Ten years later, and I'm pretty sure that Senator Armstrong unironically would be supported in the polls for the presidency, since cartoonishly evil doesn't seem to disqualify you from that kind of thing anymore.
especially considering everyone's media literacy descended into hell the moment he started talking. RT himself even said "are we forgetting about the children's brains??" and Raiden calls him batshit insane lmao sidenote, I don't know why people think Raiden is taking after Armstrong, when it's very explicit he's carrying on Sam's legacy, only unlike Sam he's motivated by his own desire to do good and is using his own bloodlust to achieve that goal. he's sadistic but he's not violent without reason. Armstrong was just a massive hypocrite, Raiden even calls him out and just because Armstrong got the last word doesn't make Raiden's point wrong. he was trying to do what he did to Sam; make him doubt his own morals by pulling the "we're not so different" card, only Raiden saw through that bullshit
@@dhampir_days I mean I don't think it is that simple, it's pretty clear that Armstrong is portrayed as unflinchingly sincere. Armstrong is also motivated by a desire to do what he sees as good, the entire comparison he makes in regard to Raiden isn't the same as Monsoon. Monsoon is "Jack we're the same because we both enjoy killing", Armstrong is "Jack we're both the same because we believe in our goals beyond the point of not compromising other ideals". Like yes obviously Armstrong has an ideal for the world that we find to be unpalpable, but he's not doing what he does out of simple motives like greed or pettiness. He's also not hypocritical because from his perspective the goal is more important than the means of achieving it - which go figure is exactly Raiden's take on murder etc. That's why he and Armstrong are similar. Their difference is in the degree of how far they have been made to go/chosen to go to achieve their goals, and in what their vision of an ideal world is. I also would be remiss to not point out that a whoooooooooole lotta current-day governments do all sorts of warcrimes on a regular basis so while I personally don't think children brain jar is an acceptable cost of having government, I also cannot confidently say how much worse it is than drone striking civillians. I do get the whole getting pissed at seeing people go "Wow Armstrong has a point actually guys" but I think there's more to it than "Armstrong is wrong in every way". My takeaway is something more to the degree of "Armstrong is admirable in having self-consistent ideals that he strives to enact unto the world, but those ideals are also morally unacceptable to me". One of the most pathetic aspects of real-life Armstrong-alike politicians is that they say the things they do without an ounce of consistency or principal. The fact that he has principals and consistency is specifically why he's an appealing antagonist in my eyes.
The HF Blade basically vibrates at a certain level that it cuts EVERYTHING by separating its molecular structure, it pretty much is just a metal lightsaber
When you awaken a persona long dead that you thought you were over because you traumatized yourself into thinking you were not a child soldier and then felt like you had to fight for righteous causes because “you were trapped in fighting”, and then you overcome that hurdle, no Raiden, you did not halt his memes. In fact, it was more like the memes were resonating.
I now see why the tutorial vr missions are essential. Dan not understanding Zandatsu, lock on, or the ability to block made this game way harder than it needed to be. MGR is an easy game when you understand the 3 basic mechanics of attack, block, and heal.

I beat it on every difficulty stupidly fast, and I don't play these kinds of games often. I got "The Politics of Silencing Foes", "Truly Human", "Chosen by History, "Genius Destroyer", and "Prodigal Murderer" on very hard, and then went back and beat them all on Revengeance which was way easier imo. Fun fact about the turret sequence at 59:27! It's a ranked encounter, meaning that you have to complete every wave if you want to get a ranking for it. And since you can't go down, you have to use ranged weapons to fight the majority of the enemies. It's also impossible to beat it hitless using the turret, so you need to equip the augment that gives you unlimited secondary uses in order to spam homing missiles, and alternate homing missiles and EMP grenades for the GRAD if you want to get an S rank. getting all S ranks in Revengeance mode changed me permanently, and not because of any boss. Just this goddamn encounter.
I see. Someone else played way too much mgr too. I was thinking about s ranking everything, but after doing hitless revengeance Armstrong, i quit. It was f*cking awful - phase 2 with his stupid dash grab is pure horror, dodging for 2,5 minutes. I didn't even try dlc Armstrong. My hands still hurt. Took me in sum 4 hours spread over a week to beat that phase.
Yeah. That was the biggest pain in all of the S ranking. The only element worse than that is attempting R-03 No Damage - before World Marshal Building - that is between last and 2nd to last ranked fight(which is the daze sequence to begin with). I somehow did that once on lower difficulty I think without fire extinguishers... and no killing(woodden sword)
The file 4 lobby fight and the slow walk section in file 3 might genuinely be my least favorite encounters in any action game ever (and I’m including things like the Afterburner section in Bayonetta). I did an all S-rank no damage Revengeance playthrough and despite how much fun I had doing it I will never do it again because of those two encounters alone. The other guy didn’t explain the fire extinguisher strat so for the people who don’t know, to no damage that section you have to slowly kick at least 5 fire extinguishers up to the arena, then hit them which will create an RP grenade like effect which will stop the enemies from attacking you, you just wait till one fire extinguisher runs out and then hit another one, sounds easy enough doesn’t it?. The bad part is that pushing those fire extinguishers takes about 8 minutes and you have to do it every single restart, (and that’s the most optimal route I found pushing multiple fire extinguishers at once, if you’re doing it one by one it takes like 15) and hitting those fire extinguishers is very inconsistent, you have to angle Raiden in a very specific way and be a very specific distance from the fire extinguisher and even then it may just not work. And for the icing on the cake the enemies have guns so if you mistime it or miss a fire extinguisher you’ll get shot instantly 99% of the time with no chance to recover. Thank Christ that both of these encounters are optional.

Metal Gear games, like Kirby games, certainly fit in the category of game series that are extremely fun to watch someone play for the first time, in this case due to the insanity that goes on in them.
The funny thing is that meme studies are generally discredited because memes are just focusing on ideas floating around as opposed to noting the context, how they spread, and why they became popular (the context behind the meme being important), thus memes are watered-down signs from sign/signifier theory. That means that memetic theory was never considered seriously.
I like to consider this game a great reason to get into the Metal Gear series. Not that the gameplay for the rest of the games is remotely similar, but there’s so much BS to unpack that some people can’t help wanting more answers from the rest. And it makes for a great journey.

@@jasonkeith2832You say "the quiet part" as if Metal Gear has EVER been particularly subtle.

It just ends up being unintentionally hilarious because no one knows that defention and we just think theyre talking extremely seriously about the concept of dumb internet jokes.
even if they did, I doubt Dan noticed in chat
Dan said in the vod he already knew, but it's still hard to take seriously given the common usage.

52:26 So fun fact: the word meme has actually been around way longer than we realise. It's a term that basically means an idea or concept that gets spread from person to person. While we have come to ascociate it with jokes on the internet, it technically is accurate to what they are doing in the game.
Hell the idea of 'genes vs memes' is kind of a core concept to metal gear
Specifically, the term 'meme' was invented in 1976 by evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins
For more info, read Hideo Kojima’s book, The Creative Gene
A common example of a meme in the traditional sense is the idea of standing in a queue.
Were it not for that shared concept, any process that involved multiple people having to wait for something would result in the physically strongest people bullying their way to the front.
Since the meme of the "queue" has achieved widespread adoption, those processes are handled in a much more civilised fashion (most of the time at least).
Read a old text about memetics for class, made the whole meme thing make sense
I cannot get over the fact that, despite primarily not being made by Kojima (it was programmed by Platinum, the devs behind Bayonetta, working off an original concept given to them by Kojima Productions), this somehow manages to be the most Kojima game ever made.
I don't think the writer for Rising is made clear, but Kojima did oversee the project, so he had clear involvement.
@@leithaziz2716 Oversee in a technical sense, but had minimal oversight ability, from my understanding of things. especially considering everyone's media literacy descended into hell the moment he started talking. RT himself even said "are we forgetting about the children's brains??" and Raiden calls him batshit insane lmao
sidenote, I don't know why people think Raiden is taking after Armstrong, when it's very explicit he's carrying on Sam's legacy, only unlike Sam he's motivated by his own desire to do good and is using his own bloodlust to achieve that goal. he's sadistic but he's not violent without reason.
@@dhampir_days Boooo media literacy mentioned
@pointillism252 It's a real thing though that some people desperately need

I now see why the tutorial vr missions are essential. Dan not understanding Zandatsu, lock on, or the ability to block made this game way harder than it needed to be. MGR is an easy game when you understand the 3 basic mechanics of attack, block, and heal.

@@pokfen1812 Oh my god I actually blocked that one out of my memory. It sucked so much ass. Definitely the second worst encounter in the game.
@@pokfen1812 but imagine no damage defeating Jetstream Sam on hard mode, with the wooden sword. You probably will never do this, there's not even an achievement for it, but it's not easy.

Just kojima in general. Death Stranding has moments like that. A memorable one being a character going in depth about how population diversity is important and that's why you're carry frozen sperm.

MGR:R is pure insanity compared to the espionage stealth of MGS games. Most people that grew up with MGS never imagined flipping a metal gear ray or saving children from a warmongering warlord with scissors as weapons or getting a philosophical speech about memes being the DNA of the soul
That is like objectively incorrect. Philosophical Speeches about memes are an integral part of MGS since like 2001
Philosophical lectures yes, but specifically about memes and having the main antagonish use so much memes the population becomes unaware hes trying to cause ww3 is fucking hilarious@@literallynoone9923
Uhh...no?
Hideo Kojima loves to put bizzare stuff in his stories ever since Metal Gear 2. Not Solid 2, the original Metal Gear games. And now he's making Death Stranding.
This is pretty normal for Metal Gear standards, and honestly one of the most focused stories since MGS3, which might sound bizarre out of context considering how over-the-top and memey this game is.

RT:" I can't be bothered to listen to the lore!"
RT ten seconds later:" What's the lore behind this?"
To be fair, Metal Gear Rising is not very friendly to new fans of the franchise, and alludes back to the other games in the most confusing possible ways.
RT is too slow for non text based dialogue
I can accept struggling with some of the lore, but when he misses half of what's going on simply because he doesn't pay any attention it gets tiresome. The dialogue goes "it's a space launch vehicle" and "we're not going into orbit" and "it travels at Mach 23" and "I'm only going to the troposphere", at which point RT goes "so, wait, is he to Pakistan?!"
I swear sometimes he willfully ignores what's going on just so he can make a big deal about how "confusing" it all is.
@@damageYT666 I feel like he understands what’s going on, just hams it up as a joke. Clearly he hears what the characters are saying, otherwise he’d be even more confused than he lets on to be.
I wasn't expecting to laugh so hard but the part where Raiden is getting beat up by two random policeman because he hear their minds right before you get back into gamplay where you immediately rip their spine really got me
It's funny especially since it always starts with one of them attacking and it is SO EASY to parry that attack. And on the highest difficulty it's a oneshot (it's also funny to S rank it with No Kills achievement).
As an RT game fan I love how he reacts to everything. As a MGS fan, how can you NOT know that Venom Snake is a body double of Solid Snake, who is one of three clones of Big Boss, the other two being Liquid and Solidus while also being the president of the United States. All three clones being made to make the perfect soldier after Big Boss killed Boss during the Virtuous(virtual) Mission? IT'S SO OBVIOUS AND NOT CONFUSING AT ALL DAN
Quick heads-up, Venom is not Solid's body double.
@@minecraftsteve5201 yah he is, he's a medic that got plastic surgery and did VR training of Snake's Virtuous mission (Snake eater) to become his body double while the OG Snake went into hiding

NO! THAT IS NOT SOLID SNAKE!
the Boss wasn't killed in the Virtuous Mission, but she was a triple agent acting to keep a nuclear war from happening by masquerading as a traitor (defecting to the soviet union) to then be killed by an American operation, which was operation Snake Eater, thanks to Volgin using a nuke, and also the cobra unit was mostly just people after their timely equivalent of pirate treasure.

he has a reason... the fact he doesn't have a normal human jaw anymore. He hasn't had a normal jaw since... 2008?
actually the reason is that he's pretty much a head minus the jaw along with a spine, rest of him got totaled

With how much punishment his chin takes through the game I'd argue he had _very_ good reasons to get a metal jaw
