- Palenque was founded by former enslaved Africans who escaped, lead by Benkos Bioho, making it the first "free town" for Africans in the Americas. In 1612 the Spanish signed a peace treaty with them, and they've conserved many of their African customs, language, and music, as seen in this video. It was an incredible experience visiting San Basilio de Palenque in Colombia and being deeply immersed in all the Black history. Is this your first time hearing of Palenque and would you visit? This was a great decision to visit Palenque, during my travels in Colombia I did not make time to reach the location, I had no idea their "Police" did not enforce force or they go by the name of Guardians, well done man.
