"The Plutonia Experiment is one of the two official 32-level Doom II IWADs which make up Final Doom. It was created by brothers Dario and Milo Casali under contract with id Software, and was released alongside its counterpart TNT: Evilution in June 1996."

I can not believe the luck I got here, amazing.
It's now been 19 years since Final Doom was released, no one has ever attempted to do a single segment run of it on Nightmare difficulty before without using tools due to the difficulty. Over those 19 years there have been a lot of discoveries on how to sequence break the game. Some of the tricks used in this run are glides, rocket jumps, keygrabs, arch vile jumps and a lot of linedef skips. Without many of these tricks it would be impossible to achieve this.
On map 17 I do a trick called suicide exit, so this is the only (intentional) death of this of run. Even though it's possible to continue if you die during the run, the run itself is considered invalid (unless you exit the map).
The damage that I take is very random, so you need a lot of luck at times. For example revenants can do 80 (60) max damage with ranged (melee) attack, Baron\Hellknight 64 (80), Cacodemon 40 (60), Mancubus can do up to 64 damage per fireball where they shoot 2 at the same time, Demon\Spectre can do up to 40 (they attack very rapidly) while a chaingunner will tear you apart if you let them get too close with up to 15 damage per pellet. Minimum damage is usually around 1/8 of max damage.
In plutonia (on UV\NM difficulty) there are 704 chaingunners, 422 revenants, 123 cacodemons, 90 barons, 151 hell knights, 23 cyberdemons (most of them on map 31,32), 4 Masterminds, 315 shotgun guys, 86 zombiemen, 74 pain elementals, 140 mancubus, 94 arachnotrons, 99 arch viles and 436 imps. Obviously since I skip large sections of some maps and maps 31,32 are optional I don't actually run into all of them. Notably is that the majority of cyberdemons are on map 32.

Probably the best Doom video on the net, anyone who's played Plutonia will know how unreal this is
I think Plutonia is when I discovered that Chaingunners were actually the most dangerous monster in Doom II.
+Sarah Watt (NuclearSarah) That and Archviles they are just something that has ruined my day a few times.
Sarah Watt they really are
Pain Elementals especially playing with fast monsters can also be exceptionally irritating
Yeah. I think due to his weapon such as Spidermastermind

100% to 48% to 14% health
Crazy
Beating this wad on Ultra-Violence is worthy of praise, but beating it on Nightmare...you deserve a shrine built in your honor!
MetalSmasherGaming Keep in mind: this dude SPEEDRUNNED it
But he didn’t get 100% on everything
You don't need 100% for speedrun. You just need to finish the game as fast as you can.
I wish i could speedrun, not just this game, but all..
@@jevil1371 Practice! There's a category for skill 1 to start with, or even no monster runs to work on movement.
This is insane. I heard that not even the creators could beat Plutonia on Nightmare difficulty, so this is a massive achievement.
The creators didn't make this expansion pack.
Yeah the Casali bros did Plutonia. Best set of maps in the cannon (not including the master lvls)
My dog is a cat.
Solutionist ' je suis un producteur de fruits et légumes
well theyre programmers, that doesnt necessarily translate to being a good player
I remember when I used to speedrun for the Compet-N back like 10 years ago or more that half of Plutonia wasn't finished on Nightmare. This game has come so, so far. Congrats on taking it to the finish line.
Hey you used to be a good Doom youtuber. Where'd you disappear.
Finally got around to finish watching this, absolutely insane. Some parts are shiver-inducing because you're so close to dying at any point. Exiting a map (I think it was "Speed") with 14% health, and then the next map starts you off in the middle of a giant circle of lost souls... one random, errant, barely preventable charge and you're dead...
I also realized just how genius id software were, even in their jokes. I think Nightmare! was originally added as a joke after a few players complained the game was too easy on UV. Lesser game designers would just have the enemies respawn and be done with it -- it's already enough of a "fuck you" to the player to be funny. But no, id went the extra mile and sped up the projectiles so that even a single chaingunner can tear you apart in an instance.
But then, without respawning, you could actually kill them off and have them stay dead, which would give players room to retreat and be sane -- not what id were going for with this crazy joke difficulty. In short, it has to be BOTH "respawn" AND "fast" in order for Nightmare! difficulty to be what it is. Separately, they would still be extremely challenging, but not to this degree.
And, of course, Plutonia was SO not meant to be possible on Nightmare, even on UV it's just so deviously designed. Damn.
I only recently learned that monsters will always attack when they see you on Nightmare as well. No walking around between attacks, just constant projectiles and bullets until you're dead or out of sight.
Plutonia was in Dario's and Milo's own words designed to give them a really hard time on Ultra Violence. If a map wasn't enough of a struggle to them, they'd revise it until it was.
Safe to say, they probably never thought beating Plutonia on Nightmare!, much less single segment, was at all possible.
@@btv4120 True, which upgrades regular old Shotgun Baldies from simply dangerous, to 'Oh no!' status, and makes regular Green Hairs actually kinda dangerous.
@@btv4120 They also have 0 reaction time, firing the moment they see you. This makes Cacodemon ambushes a lot more threatening than you'd think.
Dude you have a habit of coming so nervewrackingly close to dying and you pick it right back up like it's fucking nothing. Legendary status
Jesus, what an insane ramp up in difficulty from Doom 2
The max intended difficulty for Plutonia is just UV, nobody was expected to ever play it on Nightmare, where monsters are faster and don't stay dead.
It's hard, but not normally *this* brutal.
This is absolutely insane. I'm having a hard time comprehending this. Imagining anyone sitting there thinking, "I should do a Nightmare SS of Plutonia!" and thinking it was a reasonable idea is crazy to the point of being hilarious :D
I barely managed to get through Doom and especially Doom 2 on Nightmare, even though stx-Vile gave me the blueprint. This was like stx-Vile on steroids. I finished Plutonia Experiment not too long ago on Ultra Violence, and that was a challenge. Bizarrely the chaingunners didn't give me as much trouble as I thought, I think because I watched a run from Dime and he voiced his hatred for them, so I had my eye out for them. The revenants though, good christ. Watching you dodge some of those missiles, I was actually cringing in my seat. I gave Nightmare a look after UV, but after struggling to finish the third level, I called it quits. Seeing you blast through this was wonderful to watch.
There were so many great moments in this run. You know it's going to be a great run when before every level, you ask yourself, "How the hell is he going to do this?" You're an extremely smart player, I liked when you would close doors behind you, like around 10:30. I love runs with great planning on display like that, paying attention to the small details. A lot of the tricks you used, glides, etc. really surprised me. The amount of work you must have put into this run is astounding. If your hands got shaky at any point, you're done. I'd be interested to know how many attempts it took to get this run. The sheer amount of RNG, I'm amazed you came out of this a sane person. I would have drowned my computer when you got denied so many times on MAP27.
This is now one of my new favorite runs ever. I plan to watch this a few more times. As well, I've given up speedrunning for a while now, I wasn't inspired enough to put the work in, but after watching this, I'd like to pick it back up again. Thank you for that. Thanks for this run, all the hard work you clearly put in, and for the great quality as well!
Spasmodic Gaming Thanks for the comment, and it was indeed a lot of work alone to just figure out how to do each section and not just practice\attempts. As an example, very few will understand just how complicated map 13 was unless you actually do doom speedruns which include guideless glides, because on map 13 it will look like I do two glides just like any other glide. However, the direction (when looking at the minimap) has a lot to say for how difficult the glide is, in this case I do a south directed glide followed by a north directed glide, and doing a north directed glide quickly was something that I figured out very recently after many hours of trying different approaches. There was a very good chance that I would struggle to get through and just outright die to the baron respawn, because that happened a lot when I practiced.
Map 27 is one of the easiest maps in the run, yet it was looking very likely that in the end it was that map that would kill this attempt. Revenants, especially on tombstone (map 23), are extremely random and dangerous, and luck will determine if you get through no matter how much time you put into practicing that map :)
I was actually starting to breathe faster when you were attempting the second glide, I was waiting on that baron to respawn.
***** You can run through the levels with no monsters to practice the fastest or most effective way to find weapons/ammo or reach the exit. But even than it takes a great deal of skill to actually do something this.
Spasmodic Gaming Nearly completed Doom 2 Brutal Doom 2.0 mod on Realistic mode pretty much everything kills you 1 shot. so hard. I'm at mission 29/30
+David Frigault Mandatory kills on no monster levels? Wow I had no idea! I guess that would apply to Doom 2 Map 7 with the manucbi and arachnotrons as you have to kill everything to exit the map. :P
doom logic: run diagonally to go faster
Basic vector math. If going 1 unit in both X and Y directions, then the vector sum is sqrt (1^2 + 1^2) which is sqrt(2) speed. So you're travelling 1.41 units per given time window instead of 1, so you are 41% faster.
Like in goldeneye or turok on n64
You can also go faster by scraping against certain walls

"Oh.. well what about the creepy exploding eye guys, they'll deal with him" "dude he didn't even fight them he just ran into them and kept going" "dammit.. the invisible monster guys?" "dead" -_- "ok ok lets go find that secret room and just chill for a while, no one goes in there. Plus we have an armor, some health and ammo if we needed" "great idea!. Ok we're safe now right?" "totally dude, there's no possible chance that anyone would ever come in here. And I already told you we have armor, health and ammo in here for days. We're **head explodes**.." "Oh sh............."

@Just a cacodemon with internet access Mr. Cacodemon, I have a question, the chain gun has 4 or 6 guns, when I see the chaingunners, I see that their chain gun has 4 guns, but I have observed that the chain gun that we acquired has 3 guns on top, so following the logic of cannon placement this should also have another 3 cannons down, 3 + 3 = 6 cannons, so how many cannons do you think it has? four or six?
@Just a cacodemon with internet access Thanks Mr. Cacodemon
This is exactly why Doom 2 is the best shooter, forever and ever, amen.
this is Final doom

@@Curratum i remember my first Arch-vile encounter. As a kid, I only remember playing Ultimate Doom with the original monsters. Fast forward a little bit to middle school, I finally got the other Dooms and remember saying "WHAT....is THIS...?" (Chance's voice from Homeward Bound)
Awesome run Zero, congrats. Great to see people play this game at such a high level, i've always had a soft spot for Doom, it was such a big game when it first came out.
This is the most impressive gaming feat I've ever seen
I love you. ♥ I've been looking for a Nightmare speed run of this for a long, long time! Either single player or co-op. It didn't matter. You've finally showed that it's actually possible!
wow, your heart must have been pounding at the end! congratulations!
this is hands down, the most impressive gaming feat I have ever seen.

THIS IS INCREDIBLE. By far the most amazing speed e run I have ever seen. This isn't the sort of run where people can just learn and get into a community, you've just done something so remarkable, I hope you feel fresh as hell.
The whole run felt like "Oh fuck run for you life!"
