    Thanks for the info.
    NOTE:
    Loosen the 'fill bolt' first, before you drain the fluid. Why, you may drain the fluid and find you now can't fill it because the fill bolt won't loosen.

      A differential service? Lol like 20 bucks. Also a professional mechanic doesn't just guess parts. Not saying it can't be the sensor but you shouldn't really just guess parts before testing them because it ends up costing you more in the long run

    • @jasgad
      @jasgad  3 года назад +5

      Well sure I should. You can never go wrong replacing any sensor on an old car. I just keep track on a computer of what ones I replace and replace sensors I can get to when my cars get older. Replacing the rear differential sensor couldn’t harm the car so why not? I was changing the oil anyways. But needless to say the VTM-4 light never came on again.

    • @cameljockey1428
      @cameljockey1428 3 года назад +3

      @@jasgad u can never go wrong? Um yes u can replace a perfectly good part and waste your money. Lets say you get a c1431 are u going to replace 1,000 dollars worth of parts before u even figure out what caused the problem? No professional technician would just change a sensor without testing it lol. You end up wasting money that way pay a tech to diag it properly. Don't get me wrong I think its great u fixed your problem but encouraging people to just go and throw parts at their car guessing it'll fix it doesn't always help and it takes away business from professionals. U could at least show how to test the sensor with a multimeter that would justify it but u didn't

    excellent video. appreciate your time. Excellent posts and replies. Criticism is a funny thing...because frankly most full service shops will go thru the process of elimination with sensors... yes, many have gear to test sensors, but they won't know if they intermittingly work, nor will they know exactly because 1 sensor break down or intermittent use can trigger a whole bank of service codes...so i've read a few criticisms and their unjustified. Hence... even if you have to change a few sensors, you're automatically gonna at least pay for an hour of services at 90 to 160 bucks an hour, plus 1, 2 or maybe more sensors. And you learned something. So, I've had this issue with a 2008 Pilot. VTM comes and goes, and so does the engine light. It goes away when powering down, turning the key off. It may very well be the exact issue and fix you've outlined here. 1st though, the Knock Sensor is spitting out error code, which as another commenter said, could effect the VTM 4. That's a 30 dollar part sensor at autozone. I'll try that 1st. Found where that sensor is located. Appears to be on the driver's side, below and about 12 inches or less north from the battery; could probably change it w/o taking out the battery, but good idea anyways, battery would be disconnected and then there will be more room to access that sensor. Thank you Jason! You lead me on the right path...process of elimination. It's people like you in this world I'm so grateful for, that make these how to videos, out of the goodness of your heart

    Thank you for this great video you have really taken a big load off my mind as to how I was going to get this diagnosed. My light came on and also the engine symbol two nights ago. I see that you change the sensor and the fluid. Is it possible that just the fluids need to changing or would it be also that like you did I would need to change the sensor as well? When I googled this online it’s suggested I could even have low tire pressure so I had a tire shop make sure that my tires were inflated correctly because they were low. I have wondered if I should unplug one cable on my battery to reset the code or erase the code? Thinking that maybe it was just the underinflated tires because they only had about half of the air. Oh and I am listening to your video again and my button on the dash won’t activate either.

    That sensor is a great thing to know about! My VTM-4 light comes on intermittently always with the check engine light then will go out but the CEL stays on due to the random cylinder misfire so it is worth checking that sensor because it could be failing. Im already almost finished changing the knock sensor because she has all of the symptoms for it. Something to that VTM-4 light though so this is very useful information for me. Mines a first gen 03, however the differential sensor and drain plug locations are the same. :) I've drained old/ pumped back in New fluid (not supposed to pour it in or just fill it up so I got one of those disposable hand pumps to transfer fluid and used that to pump the new fluid in new). I think that's the only Honda maintenance fluid I know of that must be put back in a special way instead of just poured. Come to think of it the transmission fluid on Hondas is checked with the vehicle off while most are on. I guess they all have their particulars...I think the Honda Engineers know what they're doing so who am I to question? Lol.
    I ♡ Honda!!! Thanks man! 👍👍

    Informative video, nice to know about that sensor. I have a 2006 Honda Ridgeline which I assume has a similar setup as your Pilot. I really don't know if I have ever used the vtm system. I have never been stuck in the mud or snow and needed to manually engage it. I think when driving on a snowy road it may intermittently go on and off to provide good traction, but there is no light that goes on if this is so. What was your experience not having the vtm system other than the dashboard light being on?

    How high do you fill the fluid up to? All the way to the top? Fill it until it comes out of the top fill hole?

      You fill it until it comes out of the top fill hole in a steady stream. There are other RUclips videos that show you this.

    How much vtm fluid do you put in?? Or how do you know when to stop?

    • @Juberdingus
      @Juberdingus Год назад

      When it starts leaking out of the fill hole. And if/when you do this job, or have someone do it for you, make sure you’re using the Honda branded VTM fluid. Not the other brands that say it works for Hondas. Honda’s differentials, power steering, and transmissions are very picky with their fluids.

      Hook up a multimeter to both pins of the sensor. Check for ohms and heat it up with a hair dryer if the value goes up or down than u know the sensor is working

    Hi Jason, I did what your video said to do. I changed the transmission fluid and changed the VTM sensor (genuine honda just in case) The light went off when I first drove it which it usually does. About a quarter mile into my trip, the light went back on. I am trying to see if disconnecting the battery to clear the memory works. You got any other tips or suggestions or from any of your subscribers. Wouldn't definitely appreciate. Thank you.

      @@bjimeneziii There was one time that I disconnected the battery to clear the memory. It worked for two days and the VTM4 light went off. On the third day it went back on and I parked it at work. Eight hours later, I got off work and drove it home and the light stayed off. About a mile from my destination, it went back on again. Sometimes it doesn't go on at all and when you least expect it, it turns back on again. When the light does go back on, I don't experience any type of "mechanical failure" (knock on wood) but ease the pilot back home. So I dont know really what to expect anymore but it's been good to me so far. Hope this helped.

      @@kammi_671 Did you ever figure it out? I wanted to try this, but I feel like it won’t fix it.
      My light doesn’t come on until about a mile of driving, and the rear end clunks when it comes on. I lose power as well, but I think it’s because it gets stuck in AWD.

      @@Juberdingus Hi, I still have the issue with the light going on. When it does go on, I hear a little click like a relay going on but no clunking sound......so far. I have driven it far distances also but there are no major issues other than what I just mentioned to you other than the light staying on. I did let it sit and took the battery off but the like still came back on.

      C Bigelow it is what you use to lock all 4 wheels into 4wd on an all wheel drive vehicle. It locks the differential.
