Saving Stranded Cows In The Black Hills

- Hey everyone, My name is Carson Sleep and I am a 6th generation rancher on the Sleep Ranch.
Our ranch is located in the Black Hills of South Dakota where my family settled and started ranching in 1883. I started this channel to show how a working ranch operates and to document our everyday activities. My goal is to have fun and to bridge part of the ever growing gap between American Beef producers and consumers.
Join me as I learn more about raising cattle, caring for the land and working/operating equipment!

You made that look easy! But, for those that have never done this, I can assure you, it is anything BUT easy to do! That one crazy cow that took off then led to the others thinking they needed to do the same. Every single "animal" in this scenario, including the human animals, has their own mind. Each one acts and reacts and it takes a quiet demeanor to get something this tricky to end as it did. GREAT job you guys!
Thanks for taking us along. When you got up in saddle and picked up the reins felt like I was there.
I love the Black Hills!
Just a little FYI for your followers....the more you guys comment and/or hit the 'like' button on other people's comments, it helps kick-start the algorithm to distribute the channel into more news feeds and the channel will grow faster. A bunch of us did that with Sonne Farm's channel last year and it took off like a shot. Carson does a great editing job and this channel deserves to be more widely distributed 🙂
Great idea!
Hello Deb! We just recently found Carson at Sleep Ranch! Read your comment and just wanted to thank you for sharing this information! Also, thank you for supporting agriculture advocacy! We are also a family farm made up of 5 girls plus Mom and Dad! I am a fourteen year old girl and I am the voice behind our channel! We are learning a lot through this journey of farming, homesteading, and YouTubing! Blessings to you!
Lets not forget about the Ranchers. And the Farmers. They are extremlly important.
OMG, what an amazing life....so incredibly blessed.
Thanks Julie!
Great video! You guys made that look easy in the freezing cold. Great job!!!
Such beautiful horses!
Thanks Ed!
Oh, the memories this brings back! Back in the '60's we didn't have to chase cows through the trees east of Buffalo Gap, but there were plenty of draws and hazards going down to the Cheyenne river bottoms, and even if we'd had 'em, there is no 4-wheeler that could get down there and back. Even today, my cousins who live out there still use horses out of necessity. I'm friends with Cole and Brian Sonne (Sonne Farms channel), and they're able to use their gators back east on the flatlands. Watching Brian getting bounced around on that thing though, I'm still not sure that it's any easier on the spine ;-) Happy New Year to you and your lovely family, Carson, and thank you for another stellar video!
Thank you Deb! Happy New Year to you and your family! Some rough country down by the Cheyenne river, I’m sure you’ve seen some cool stuff! Sonne Farms is sure a great channel!
Good gather. I enjoyed. Brought bk lots of memories. Stay warm, God Bless Always
Great video I like the way you guys use horses instead of quads bring back a lot of members when I was out on the farm keep on making great video happy New year and God bless you and your family
Thank you John, happy New Year to you and your family!
Visited the Black Hills for the first time this last September and what beautiful country it is. I just turned 70 and I don't know why it took me so long to come and see the Black Hills and the surrounding area. I watch Sonne Farms and love the antics of Brain and Cole. If I get the chance I'll be coming back to the Black Hills and area again.
Great video Carson and great poem from Uncle Gary. Congratulations on getting those pairs safely home, even though questionable at times. Carson, love the relationship you have with all your horses. It is great that each one has a name and are well cared for.
Thank you Ben, yes uncle Gary is a character haha
Now I know where hip hop comes from, way back limerick and viking poetry. Nice coralling, you done that before. Keep on farming. Couple of years quality produce will be a gold mine. God Bless from Norway!
😂😂thank you!
Well I accidentally found this. But WOW....HOW BEAUTIFUL ❤❤❤❤
Thanks for bringing us along!
thanks Carson really enjoy the video's .. maybe ol' uncle will have brush up the limericks tho.. but nice start hahahaha
Awesome, limerick!!😍 Thank you for sharing, I can't tell you how much I enjoyed the video...I feel I have totally missed out...what a life you have, I don't have a clue why my family left dairy country to move to CA...brought tears to my eyes...
Thank you for this beautiful post and I hit the subscribe button in a hurry; nothing "sleepy" about your ranch, lol. Happy New Year to you and yours!
Haha thank you very much! Happy new year to you and your family!
Wow! Thank you for this fantastic video! Brings back some great memories of winter roundups and just peaceful times on the range!
Thanks! Sound like great memories!
Good luck finding your cows
Hello from Vermont ⛷🏂I just found your channel and I subscribed..I can't wait to start watching your videos ♡
Thank you Caryl! I hear Vermont is beautiful!
Carson to the rescue! Nice work
Thanks Shane!
Another awesome video Carson , I enjoyed watching how easy it was to load those beautiful horses onto the trailer🐴🐎, glad the cows are safe and are headed back home where they can be safe and fed throughout the winter🐄, Happy New Year to your family 🎆🎊 ☺
Thank you Sarah, happy New year to you and your family!
Thanks for bringing us along! Loved the video! We are SW Minnesota farmers. Grow corn and soybeans. I've rode horses for fun for 50 years...but the ground is flat and we just ride in the ditch. Total different way of life but enjoy seeing what you do in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota. So glad you caught those cows! 😃 🙂
Thank you Leann! And thanks for all your hard work as farmers!
Ooo yeah, another really nice video !
You guys are really laid back.
This channels' star is rising, and looking forward to many more in 2022
Yahoo
Thank you Scott! Happy New Year!
What a fantastic family! It's amazing how you do everything. Well done!
Found your channel from a youtube suggestion. Glad I did, pleased to be able to follow.
Thank you Beth!
Hi from frosty -7 degree Ontario Canada!! Team penning for fun in the summer is great fun but this is the real deal in January. Slow and steady with calm horses and a job well done!!
Thanks Stewart, stay warm up there!
99.9% of the world would love the view at work that you have but only 2% couldn’t stand The actual work that you did 🧐
Great video. I’m glad you got some moisture.
Thank you!
Just seeing your channel... good job and true... nothing like good horses and people that know how to work with them.. enjoyed this Happy New Year!!! Subscribing...
Thank you Charlotte! Happy New Year!
Happy new year from Scotland ,another great video ,,,,must start calling you the cud man as you never stop chewing 😂😂🤣🤣
Happy new year Thomas! Ya my wife gets in my case for slipping my gum in the videos! A habit I need to break haha
What a great idea to hang the fence panels on the trailer
I said to my wife as watching this....always has to be one calf that just about screws it all up...
Great Video...
That’s right! There’s always one! Thanks Andy!
Thanks
Great job taking care of your loved ones! And your dogs look like they are loving life. I have to admit, I grew up a suburbia boy, lived near the shore almost my whole life. I’ve never been afraid of hard work, so the rural life is something I truly admire. Stay Blessed. Prayers from an ol Soldier.
🇺🇸💪👍✝️🙏🦅
Thank you! And thank you for your service, a sacrifice that doesn’t go unnoticed!
Good job , I only saw one thing missing , a pair of good cow dogs
That’s true.. hopefully one day! Thanks Robert!
Dang! That looked so cold, I built our fire up! Glad you got them back where they belong.
Haha thanks Kenni!
Love ur horses. Cows were not spooky
U guys were calm
Thanks Bill!
Loved the limerick and the video. I chased some rustlers out of our herd, but after they had shot a lovely heifer. They were in a Jeep Wrangler in Northern California on the Pit River. They took off in the direction of McCloud.
Thank you! Wow, that is crazy! I hope you guys catch them, very disappointing to lose a heifer to such a dishonest act.
New subscriber. That was amazing. I know it was risky but riding those horses in the snow was beautiful. Gonna watch your other videos and catch up . If they are anything like this I’m gonna enjoy watching y’all
Great video, Love the the family working together and just the the wisdom of about cows and how to make it work to get them. Glad it worked out for you and them
Thank you Thomas!
I thought beef came from the grocery store, why you chasing them in that cold snow? HA!!! Thanks for the video and good luck!!!
Great work!
Good job You got it done in spite of the horses not working. Send me your email and I will explain the principle of bend so you can change directions without the horse tossing his head in the air while the cow is going to the bushes
Thanks John! Ya he’s a young horse and we didn’t have the opportunity to work the edge off him before we went after the cows! I always like learning from people with more experience so a good email is carsonsleep@gmail.com thanks John!
Count short every spring. 😂
First time viewer . Love the hardcore elements and how hard your family works !
Also great name for your horse Trump 😍😍
Thank you Lei!
Very interesting!!
Love horse
Nice work!
Patience and hay bait works.
I love your uncle. Really funny dude. Mom or dad's brother? Maybe he was adopted.
👏👏👏👏nice!
Hey carson. Love watching your videos 😃happy new year from Denmark 🇩🇰
Thanks Peter! I hear Denmark is a beautiful country! Happy New Year!
looks a little chillie
I did enjoy.
Thank you Lynn!
New subscriber here! I think I’m going to love this channel. It’s like watching real episodes of ‘BigValley or ‘bonanza. All of this looks so cool and like it would be so much fun… However, I know it’s hard work and serious business. Is that one horses name Trump?… If so, now that is really cool! The only thing missing at least in this episode, was the scabbards on the side of the horse with lever actions. I’m going to share this channel with people that I know who will love it and appreciate it… Thank you so much for the content 🙏🇺🇸
Thanks for joining us!
First time viewer, awesome video! Happy New Year!
Thank you Linda! Happy New Year!
Hey Carson, have you ever considered putting a GPS collar on one of the cows/heifers so you can locate them more easily?
Happy New Year
Happy New Year to you!
Like catching butterflies with a net 😉. Brand that extra cow with an H. H is for homeless
Haha great idea!
I had hoped that you would have gotten the snow off the horses back before putting the saddle on it's back! Must be cold for them.
There’s always at least one knuckle-head in the group. Even with dairy cows.
I don’t doubt that for a second!
Thanks for showing us gals stuck in the city alone that REAL men still exist in this jacked up world. All the men in my condo unit are dancing tonight in high 👠 heels, together. 🤣. I'd rather be in the freezing cold rounding up cattle.
I like Trump nice looking horse how old and what does he weigh
Thanks Cecil, he’s four and probably weights 1200 pounds!
New sub here.
I hit the like: #800
I'm an old farm gal. We just have 31 acres here in Ohio. Very enjoyable video.
Thank you very much! That’s cool you have some land in Ohio!
Sure looks familiar. Grew up in central Montana working livestock. 🙄😂🤗
This was so interesting to me since I grew up near NYC and have no experience with ranches and your lifestyle. America is such a big country so there are so many different ways of living. This was fascinating to watch and learn from. Thanks for posting.
Thank you Christine, I appreciate it! I hope things are going well in NYC
@@sleepranch I now live in Florida. I love seeing the snow, but I couldn't live in it anymore.
All it takes is one to bust them loose or load them .
Just think, the Lakota, who never deeded these Hills, used to camp in tipis through the winter in this area. And the horses could use a blanket-you have coats, don't you?
It’s an amazing thought and I think about it very frequently while working in the hills! A beautiful place with time of history! And we usually don’t use blankets for our horses, they have full winter coats now and in our experiences, blankets messed up their natural body temperature regulation so we shy away. But other people use them!
@@sleepranch I see. That makes sense.
Karen, a horse grows a 'winter coat' for a reason. To say a horse needs a blanket, is to say nature has made a mistake, and I can assure you, it has not :-) Blanketing was very popular a decade ago, but since then, people are re-thinking this practice as it has been proven by many veterinarians to be unhealthy. It can actually be quite harmful in the colder climates as it interferes with a horse's natural temperature regulation. I'm going to attach an excellent article about this that explains the science behind equine temperature regulation in layman's terms. The references used are at the end of the article, and many are from renowned veterinarians and equine practitioners. These days, the practice of blanketing is primarily used on show horses where the appearance of a sleek coat is important in the show ring, and horses who are not 'turned out' in winter. If you have more questions, I'd be happy to get you in contact with a friend of mine who is a veterinarian at the Center For Equine Health for U.C. Davis out here where I live in California. BTW... my family ranched just outside of the Black Hills raising herford cattle and AQHA horses. Yes, there is much native history there, but there is also (alas), no time machine. Please have a blessed day, Karen.

Carson, you might want to keep this article for future use. I also have a very splendid essay on the everyday things people use that contain bovine parts and substances ;-)
@@debt4717 This is a great article, thank you for sharing it and I would be very interested in the essay as well!
@@debt4717 Ok, thanks. I'll read it tomorrow. I'm looking at Shroud of Turin videos now.
Great your neighbors cow was a lost leader going in circles. Now we have politicians in the herbivore world….
😂
Is this a story about Rocky Raccoon?
Pretty much haha
Where would man be without a dog or horse. He would be screwed.
He sure would be!
Why do u use bits they don't look comfortable the horse u have looks nice tame I'm not an expert so I apologize if I over stepped
"settled in 1883"...that's a bit of a stretch i'd say. Not here to start drama or anything like that. Just not really an accurate statement. Nobody "settled" any part of the Black Hills in 1883. And, any of us from SD know the real history of what actually happened on the Black Hills. That being said, I still enjoy the video.
Thanks for the comment and for checking out the video! Our family was coal miners in England and moved to the Black Hills to seek better opportunity in the gold mines! At this time they did homestead, start raising cattle and settled down in the area!
Please lose the chewing gum.
Love your videos but please please don’t drive with your baby on your lap in the front seat. The airbag deploys at 15 mph crash and will kill the child on your lap. I know it’s a ‘thing’ on a ranch to do this but a dear jumps across your path in a split second and it’s too late. It hurts me to see that every time.
This is gma who is driving and holding the baby. Thanks for your concern and we are very cautious with the kiddos. In this instance , I was literally driving 3 to 4 miles an hour trailing behind cows. I’m kinda the safety police around here and wouldn’t risk any harm!! Thanks for watching the videos, I hope you enjoy them!
THESE ARE REAL MEN DOING REAL WORK COMPARE THESE MEN TO ANY OF OUR CALIFORNIA BOYS EVEN THE 40 YR OLD PRIMA DONNAS. Out in the cold. It's snowing. Punching cows. Back home after dark. They call it RANCHING.
I am impressed you make that look easy. Any cattle i ever worked with who had been out away from people that long would have been totally nuts.
They had just enough ease em in and no pushing haha
Thanks for sharing this little Roundup Carson . Another great video . Glad you made it home safely . Did the chains make the difference ?
Thank you David! The chains helped a lot, if we didn’t have them the weight from the cows and the steep, slippery roads would have put us right in the ditch!
You can’t beat a good horse when working cattle out of the cattle yard
I’ll never understand why people don’t see the value of the American rancher. To me, you are the epitome of the American dream. I worked with cattle and sheep in Ag school, and through my instructors I gained huge respect for ranchers. It’s a 24/7 job no breaks, and you do what you do for the love of the land, and the animals God gave to you as caretakers. If people weren’t so far removed from reality they might understand better, and that’s why I think it’s so valuable for channels like yours to inform and educate the “masses” (keeping things respectful 😉).
Thank you Lucy, that truly means a lot!
Great video Carson
Hey yall! Just found your channel and subbed. I hope to find lots of info on your channel with you being from a family of farmers/ranchers. I'm sure you have lots of knowledge to share. Probably things you've done all your life but you sharing might make things easier for those who are new to farming?
Thank you! We really appreciate that!
Darn neighbor cow,
Beautiful horse u r riding Carson
Thank you Kevin!
Its a Family Affair, Good Thing You Were There, Those Cows Will No Longer Suffer the Winters Despair..
Pretty impressive Sandra!
Great video, I feel like I just watched a video of the Pritchard Ranch, even the third gen Cummins, Thankyou!
Thanks Matt!
Good job everyone and I hope you make home safe
Thanks David!
On my cutting horse close to park city with max my collie in the knee deep snow looking for cattle. Those good memories from 30 years ago , I loved it.
Those sound like great memories!
I remember doing the same thing. Only the snow was deep and snowmobile rides told us about them
Beautiful horses. They will be happier being able to eat this winter.
Thank you! Ya they will!
Awesome video! Good luck from Oklahoma
Thanks Braden!
Great video guys, a question that I wanted to ask was, are English sheep dogs useless for rounding up cattle?
Because the whistles they use to control the dogs would be great to cut off the cows escapes.
But I don't know.
Cheers,
Scotland
Thank you! I’m sure dogs would help, we’ve never used them but it could be a good addition!
Good job thanks for sharing .enjoyed your humor and the poem also
Thanks Donna!
Very cool! 1st time watcher of channel!!!😍 Beautiful equine, bovine and canine animals! Great job, hoomans!!
Thank you Kasey!
