(SPECIAL THANKS TO RWELLS47)
I look up while I walk
so the tears won't fall
remembering those spring days
but tonight I'm all alone
I look up while I walk
counting the stars with teary eyes
remembering those summer days
but tonight I'm all alone
happiness lies beyond the clouds
happiness lies above the sky
I look up while I walk
so the tears won't fall
I cry while I walk
for I am alone tonight
remembering those autumn days
but tonight I'm all alone
sadness hides in the shadow of the stars
sadness hides in the shadow of the moon
I look up while I walk
so the tears won't fall
my heart is filled with sorrow
for tonight I am alone
for tonight I am alone

I heard and love this song in 1963 in the Philippines when I was 17 years old and I'm now 72 years old...☺
May you have a nice life, grandfather
I'm listening this song in 2020 and i'm 25. This song is evergreen.
I sang this song (in English) in front of the junior high school class in 1973, now I'm 61 years old

If you were 17 in 1963 you're older than 72, I was 14 in 1963, and I'm 71 now in 2020. You're trying to age yourself too much or something, lol. I love this song and I heard it the first time when I was 13 years old, in 1962, do the math, Mr. Rizal. Peace
I was 14. This song reminds me of summer. I'm 69 outside but still a young teenager inside. Such great music back then. I thank God I was old enough to live through those times.
You got heart my beating as if I just ran a marathon.
Hmm ? You are 69 and were 14 when this song came out in 1962 ? So you were born in 1948 ? It would make you 70 years old no ? I guess a year here or there ...... lol
Johnny same here. Don't know what he is saying but it sounds beautiful.
Gabor P details details don't sweat it.
Oh, it's all good just joking ! After 50 I stopped counting too ! lol
In Japanese the song's title is "I look up when I walk." It's about a lost love affair- the singer "looks up when he walks" so no one passing will see the tears he cries. Beautiful in any language...
Indeed
Such a lovely song. I remember hearing this song in the early 60's while living in Los Angeles. I was around 6 or 7 years old. I am of Japanese/Scottish-Irish background, and my Japanese mother translated the words to me during those early years. Little did I know that it would become a hit on the American charts. Sadly, Kyu Sakamoto lost his life on Japan Air Lines Flight #123 in 1985. RIP, Mr. Sakamoto. Beautiful song.
I believe really you're a very special person.Mr. Sacamoto was one of the most great singer in this world...congratulations.
Very beautiful song.
celestial1933 I was 12 years old when this came out. I heard it again in 1969 in a nightclub in Okinawa.
Was he on the KAL Airliner that the Russian fighter shot down in the Sea of Japan? You can’t listen to this song and not smile.

Sakamoto-senpai perished in JAL 123, which flew into a mountain after a tailstrike seven years prior caused the rudder to snap away owing to a botched repair
Pranab Pant Thank you for the information. Kyu Sakamoto was a talented young man . His personality when singing lifted the spirits of those listening and those watching him perform. Even though it has been 60 years since he first recorded the song it still moves my soul.
i hear this song during the vietnam conflict, and fell in love with a beautiful vietnamese woman. i went back just this year and we were reunited and got married. i just can,t believe she waited all those years for my return. but i,m so happy she did.
Sweet love story ❤️
TII-LOS UU-KAI - What a lovely story. Well done.
The real love can wait. But it is really incredible! I wish you all the best.
how lucky, you!
I am glad she was there, very patient but Asian women are kinder than us Westerners!
Such a sad song that he sings so happily.
"I look up when I walk so the tears Don't Fall."
Yes, I always wondered about that! And when he sings this very sad song, *he is actually smiling!*
Hmm maybe he's enjoying singing this kind of stuff
@@Herman47
He died onboard the plane that crashed
@@Chong56 😳🙁😞
I also didn't know why he was so happy singing a sad song. May he rest in piece
This treasure of a song of lovely Japan is absolutely timeless. Never gets old. I love Japan so much
He did a beautiful job with this song. Still catchy and fun to listen to!
This song is beautiful really not only sung with so much feeling by this late Singer who had such a good voice. And the whistling adds a nice personal touch to it. One of those songs I always like to hear and enjoy.
Agree wholeheartedly
What a rare and beautiful song.
Even the birds would hush when he sings with such an enchanting sound and his whistle rivals any warble.
One of the nicest tunes that stays with you.
Absolute joy.
I'm 63 years old now. Where have the years gone? I listen to these old songs, alone, remenis and wish for Days of Old.
Me too Mike, I'm 71 and remember this when on the charts, never forgotten it.
+Jill Stephens: So do I. I'm 59 and this is the music of childhood. Today's music belongs in the garbage can!
I'm 63 and remember when this song was fresh and new. I thought it was one of the most beautiful, haunting, and sad songs ever. It still effects me today.
Mike I'm 63 and I still listen to the oldies that I grew up with
I am 66 and remember this song too. I loved Japan since I was very young and have always dreamed of going. I am going to go next year! :-D
Brings back memories. 66 year old and still love this song!!
I can play this over and over, it's such a lovely song.
Cindy J.G ฝใ
It's the kind of song you never get tired of. I was a kid going into my first hot LZ when I heard this.
*+Cindy J.G*
Yes, it is! You're totally right...

True
This is The 1 and Only version i love to listen to. The authentic Japanese pronounciation along with the intricate sounds and melody are unmatched by all versions.
This remains the only true Japanese international hit-period. Irresistible, Kyu had a really unique set of pipes.
Periodically I listen to this charming and yet sad song. Not until the day my brother went home to Heaven did I find out he enjoyed this song a lot...his now widow told me this. I miss you my brother...but we will meet again...of this I'm certain.
I still remember this song from my teen years in Lodi, Calif back in 62/63, MEMORIES of a time past but NOT FORGOTTEN
I first heard it when I was a U.S. Army soldier in Germany in the early 1960's. Loved it then. Love it now even though I have no idea what it says.
I'm 73 and had this song on a 45 rpm as a teenager, loved it then and still love it. So nice to find it here.
I will be 67 years old this year
(2018) and I remember this was one of my favorites back then and now.
This is a beautiful song I used to hear in 1963 when I was about to graduate from High School. Although I am not literate in Japanese I perceived even then it was some sort of lamentation but very nicely done. After all there are sad moments for all of us and so the song is realistic. And all of us who have lived enough can identify with it a certain times we had in our lives. It is a shame Kiu Sakamoto had to die so young as he sang very well and with so much feeling. And thanks Rachel for uploading this one. Have a nice day.
You're welcome. Have a wonderful evening :-)
1962.
Rachel Reyes thank you so very much..great choice if wonderful music.
Well I see absolutely no connection with the atom bomb and this song whatsoever. I associate more the atom bomb with the war song "We will meet again" since it was played in a film where America and Russia bombed each other out of existence and the whole world perished.
I love this song I first heard I in Ireland this year 2o18 when I went 2 see my sister she had the CD
Takes me back to 1963 and what a wonderful song this is.
THAT'S IT!! I knew it -- when I heard this in High Castle I literally flew back to Pensacola FL in the early 60s (in my mind) and could not place it or understand why -- so this was popular in the US in 63? I was just a child - 7 8 years old so why does this just tug at my heart so?
Yes loved it then , I was 12 , still love it
Deborah Wood : why indeed?! Hauntingly beautiful melody and vocal!
This is my favorite song of all time. I have to stop & listen any time this song plays. I looked up the song writer. He said he heard this melody while leaving a protest rally to ban nuclear weapons. He thought the song would be more popular if written as a lovers story. I believe the backstory is why my heart melts each time I hear it. Also I believe this why this is a folk song in Japan. I love you, Japan.
Thanks for including the words too. I have wondered about them since it was a hit in 1963.
+H. Michael B You're welcome! Thanks so much for watching :-)

Great song from 1963 thank you Rachel I look up while I walk

This would be beautiful as a poem on its own, with the tune it brings it over the top. Thank you for translation. I always thought it was beautiful, now I know why.
It's 1962 but 1 year here or there ..........
It came out in the Japanese occupation, he was singing this song and there were a couple of music publicists in Japan at the time. They liked it so signed him up for a recording of it, they couldn't sell the name to the public, so for English they called it Sukiyaki. He was a soldier in the 2nd world war and lost his fiance, hence the song. Can't remember everything, the disc I had was old songs from that mob that sell everything for a chance to win big bucks. Think it was called old romantic love songs, and tells the story also of the people who sang or wrote. Oh yeh, Readers Digest. Hope that helps.
I never knew what it means, ty
LOVE THIS SONG FROM THE 60S. PLAYED IT AT THE DRIVE IN.WHAT A WONDERFUL SONG. THANKS BEAUTIFUL SISTER REYES.

I learn this song when i was in primary school. Wow now i am 60 years old. How time flies.
My Dad was in the Air Force when I heard this for the first time. Oh the memories.
Takes me back to a childhood long lost.
As long as it lives in your heart, your childhood is never lost ... just call up those memories.
Great song😀
This is one of my all-time-favorite s. Sakamoto san was a such a gentle artist with a smiling face.
My mother had this on 45 when I was very little back in the mid 60's. This tune has been with me all my life! I had the honor to be stationed in Okinawa(Camp Schwab) and visit Tokyo, Japan, while I was in the Navy. We were supposed to go to Sapporo for some Cold Weather Training, but the operation was cancelled. I figure the Navy owes me a trip to Hokkaido, I really missed that trip, and maybe one day I can go there!!!
It didn't make a lot of sense to do cold weather training when we were fighting a jungle war in 'Nam. Aahh, but that's the military.
What's a sailor doing at Camp Schwab unless you were a medic with the Marines?
YAY!! finally found it!! did u all know this was also on a music box? it was & still is great. did not know so many musician remade this in different languages no less! learn something new everyday!
Rachel, you have done a beautiful thing here.
I'm a 66 year old Australian male, with a keen interest in cross-culture music.
The emotional and visual impressions that the original black and white recording have had on me are indelibly imprinted within me.
Well done, very well done!.
Thank you.

Was stationed in Okinawa from 93 to 96, and made several trips a year up to HQ Camp Zama, outside Tokyo. Love Okinawa and Japan, and remember this song from when I was knee high to a grasshopper. Thank you for this!!!!!

+Ken Lyle. The mid Sixties. That was one Hell of a time to be on Okinawa. I spent most of that time in Vietnam. But from what little I saw I really enjoyed Okinawa. 3Rd Marine Division. Lima Co. 3/9 Weapons Platoon. Camp Schwab Okinawa.
Were you with the first 3/9 that went to DaNang in '65? If you were, then you were at Camp Hansen not Schwab when you moved out.
Just read the English translation here while listening to the song. So sad!!! 😢. Now I can't stop crying 😭. So beautiful..*replays it again*
It is a sad song indeed as I perceived it was a lamentation sung as if he were crying as he sings. But it is a nice song and very good to hear. Regards.

Just over 15 years before this song..the US and japan were at war....the Japanese were monstrous in that war....in turn they were totally defeated and subdued by america......this song has haunted me since childhood... it is magnificent....I believe this song served as a true token of peace. From japan to the world.....it shot to the top.....from a country we had a viscous horrible war.....just 15 years before.......amazing
La música no tiene fronteras. Yo he descubierto hace muy poco esta canción y estoy totalmente prendado de ella.
Saludos a todos desde España.
The singer, was one of victims of Japan Air line #123 accident in1985. RIP, Kyu Sakamoto。
I was not aware of this, thank you, the world has lost a true treasure.
A 747SR Crashed with a mountain,it's the worst aircraft accident on the world, 520people died in the Jal123...
A terrible loss indeed. What might he have achieved next?
The accident was senseless. It was due to a poor maintenance and repair job done on the airplane. When I think of all the passengers who perished, and knew what was going to be their fait, it horrifies me.

This was my favorite song when I was 6, even though I had no clue what it meant. Later I read that it was actually a sad song, but to me it was just beautiful. How great to hear it again at 59. And thanks for the lyrics. Now I can sing along.

ALL I KNOW THAT WHEN IN WAS 6 ('620) I REMEMBER HEARING THIS ON THE RADIO AND FELL IN LOVE. NOW MY DAUGHTER AT 37 LOVES THING SONG TOO.
I use to hear this song sung by my aunt and uncle when I was a kid. I really loved the song .I am 70 yrs old now and I still love listen to it. It’s truly a beautiful song.
This was my favorite version as a child and teen. A Touch of Honey did a great English version too, but this is the best version. I didn't care that I don't understand Japanese, I can still feel the emotion and rhythm of it. Love it.
OneWayOnlyYeshua :Taste! Taste of honey! SHALOM from Israel!
I was 13 when this incredible song was released and it changed my life to appreciate great music
Its a lovely song. I listen this song over and over but never get bored
One of only four non-English recordings to make it to No.-1 on the US charts! And the best of them, too.
That same year of 1963, "Dominique" by The Singing Nun also made the top charts. She was from Belgium; a movie was made about her, and Debbie Reynolds portrayed her. A nun would not hit the Top 40 until
Sister Janet Mead sang "The Lord's Prayer" in 1974. The late Casey Kasem
called her, "The Rockin' Nun".
When I get trapped inside my own head I escape by imagining a distant song so hard I swear I hear it. Sometimes it becomes an obsession until I find it... and here I am. Thank you so much for the time out.
Beautiful song, and beautiful lyrics, it was number one in Chile. Such a beautiful voice

I was 9 going on 10 in the summer of 1963 when I first heard the song Sukiyaki on radio station AM 610 WIP Philadelphia. When I first heard the song, it had visioning myself traveling to Japan, The Philippines, Hong Kong, Taiwan. 11 years later I did go there. I met my late wife of 31 years in the Philippines. By that time and as early as the spring of 1969 when I lived in Elwood, New Jersey that I was going to meet & marry a woman from the Philippines which I did in 1979. When my late wife & I met in 1975, I wasen’t ready to get married, being on my fifth Navy cruise, which was my first Westpac cruise. We waited till I got stationed in the Philippines before we got married. The process was easier being stationed there than being stationed aboard a ship.
I love the song, it was just recently introduced to me. It's like a new song because I had never heard this until I was in my car one day and I have serious radio and I was listening to 60s. There it was, this cute and pretty little song. I fell in love with the song. Then I learned that the artist was killed in a plane crash. He was a quite handsome young man singing this song. How tragic his Life was taken by a plane crash. May he Rest In Peace.
First heard in highschool in the late 70s!!! Beautiful song!!!
Brings back memories. So beautifuel.

Rachel Reyes, you have very good tast in songs & music. The song Sukiyaki makes me long for my return home to the Philippines which is my second country where Imet my late wife of 31 years, where 2 of our 3 children were born. The Philippines was the first country outside the United States & Canada that I got to see. The Navy should have just simply left me there.
That version of Sukiyaki was wonderful. The background was stunning and I could actually follow the song with the clear English translation.🎎🎵🎶
Has one of the best examples of whistling within a song. I don't speak Japanese, but when I listen to this song, I have listened to it so often, I try to follow by singing the Japanese words!
Classic example of lyrics being superfluous...the song stands alone on its remarkably beautiful sound. I never understood a single word this great singer offered, and even reading the translation, there's no greater or lesser appreciation. The sweet sound reminds me of the main pavilion at the Royal Adelaide Show, circa 1963.
Beautiful... just simply beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
+Khean Chin You're welcome! The pleasure is mine :-)
+Rachel Reyes : I agree, just the best, Thanks for sharing..!!
+Khean Chin. It make,s me think of a beautiful young Japanese lady I was in love with when I was stationed in Okinawa. I know that sound,s strange for an Italian, but we were in love. And we loved each other very much.

I read somewhere, where it said this song was the first ever asian song to top the charts in the US, beside it being a worldwide hit. Not sure, if any other asian, or oriental songs even made it onto the US charts since, less alone a big hit as '' Sukiyaki ''. Thank you for sharing.

Mary Lipphard Yes, very true miss Mary, None as beautiful for sure. Everytime i hear it, it brings me back to my wonderful childhood days living in Japan. Our late father was a career Navy man station in Atsugi. We only lived there for about 2.5 years before we moved to the states. Btw, I kind of thought it did reach #1, but wasn't too sure...lol. Thank you. Cheers ....
+ponchai allen. That,s right. Even on the East Coast of the United States. Marine Detachment USS Saratoga. We would always hear this song at sea. But it very much remind,s me of Okinawa. I was with the Third Marine Division, Lima Co. 3/9 Weapons Platoon at Camp Schwab. My Sweetheart lived in the village of Henoco. I was really in love with her. Everytime I hear this song I think of Kimio. That is her name. I still love her today. I tryed to stay a little longer so I could marry her. I know we would still be very happy and still married and in love today. As a matter of fact, we would be Grandparents.
Jeopardy quiz show had an answer that it was the first and only non european language song to make the billboard 100
The name "SUKIYAKI" was chosen in order to make easier to foreign people recognize that great song, in "one word" , because the word Sukiyaki that is a Japanese food doesn't have anything to do with the song: ONLY that overseas people would remind..to JAPAN !
I fell so hard in love with this song , when he died , i cried so much , like in a sense i was bonded with him , i wish i could have met him ,Love & Respect
wonderful memories growing up and listening to this song...............................................................................................................................................ll

I was a teenager when this came out in 1963. I don't think any one today can imagine what an impact this song had. Beautiful melody and haunting in its effect. I think even after all these years it has to be in or near the top ten of all time single selling songs of all time. I believe it sold over 13 million copies at a time of much less population.
Just love this song so many lovely memories. Happy New Year.
Happy New Year :-)
I have loved this song as long as I can remember and still it takes me back!!
I listened to this song from a Thai composer added to Thai lyrics in 1965, and there are many Thai songs with Japanese melodies. I searched for the original melody until I found this song. This song is very melodious.
Many thanks to you, Ms. Rachel Reyes. Wonderful song and video display. Cheers, Tony. :))
I just got out of kindergarten when this song first came out. Fifty-three years later, I still love this song!
Yes :)
this buddhist hugs you. happy christmas.
i was trying to wish you a merry christmas and you turned it into a preach time. maybe you should learn better manners. i have the truth and you have a nice christmas o.k.? check out tich nat hanh for more truth. or the wonderful words of the flying spaghetti monster who is the true lord of life. RAMEN.
Sharing the truth isn't bad manners. You don't get to heaven any other way except through Jesus Christ. Buddha is not a savior of mankind. You need to know that, whether you think it is rude or not. I liked the song too. And Merry Christmas (Jesus is the reason for the season, not Buddha). Check out Joseph Prince online for more. You can also ask Jesus directly if He is real. Being God Who is alive, He answers those who want to know. You don't have to go into any kind of special room or get into any kind of special "state" to do this. Just simply ask.
great we both share our truths with each other......good that you can see that both buddha and jesus were enlightened men. please do not preach to me. most of christmas is a pagan holiday. changing of the seasons. as a person who isnt christian i just believe in love as the reason.......i see you have a different path.
Love this song.my memory with my late hobby..i am only 62 and memory are alive.ppl keep on singing.
Thank you :-)
Never boring to enjoy this nice ballads. Though I ve been listening it more than 50 years. So beautiful. So expressive.

Thank you so much :-)
unbeliveably beautiful! I could listen to it over and over.!

Beautiful songs i had ever heard since 45 years ago.
Thanks for posting this. Its beautiful
You're welcome :-)
My dad worked in Japan in the late 60's and brought home a record player - mono with 1 record. It was an album by Kyu Sakamoto. This was the only record we had and I listened to it hundreds of times. I could sing a lot of the songs, this was one of my favourites. I'm in my late 50's now, my parents, our home and the old mono player have long since gone. Listening to this beautiful song takes me back and brings tears to my eyes when I listen it. I had no idea until recently what the song was about, I suppose it didn't matter really. I only rediscovered it after hearing an English version of Timing. I didn't realise that Kyu was so well known
I first heard this song on a terryaki chicken burger commercial in the early 90s. Even though the music in the commercial was so brief I always remembered it and loved it. I am so glad I discovered who sang it. He seems like a beautiful man with a beautiful voice. The song conveys sadness and happiness. It reaches out even thru the language barrier.
Not only the song is very good and brings to me so many remembrances, but the video showing an autumnal scene in Japan is very good too so there is joy and enjoyment in watching as well a listening.
Thank you so much for your lovely comment :-)

Hard to explain to young people why we loved this song. Beautiful melody and sinscere words.
A hit when I was in the Mariannas islands. We all loved it just as much as The Beetles.
