      Yet Mr. Shaw, we have people with wealth beyond 1000s of lifetimes who have the ability to complete these projects quickly and with paid workers and yet they do not. You would think Old Warren “Buffet” would understand clearly the importance of restoring Steam and early Diesel engines to pristine running condition. They tinkle away each week on crap that returns nothing and just one week from Bill G would restore multiple engines to like new.

    • @organbuilder272
      @organbuilder272 Год назад +1

      @@solutions2exist556 Yes, would that not be a wonderful thing. Yet, I ask, which of the big four railroads would allow these huge, heavy, thirsty engines to run over their rails, trestles, bridges? Who and how would watering stations be established? At 250 gallons of water per mile, Big Boy is a thirsty beast and others of his ilk are no less so. I suppose you could load the freight companies these great machines for revenue freight. Challenger is quite capable of hauling 200 cars. Imagine a fleet of 7 Big boys and the two remaining Challengers hauling freight over Sherman hill and the Cumberland gap. Have you read - THE LONG TRAINS ROLL. It is an inspiration for young kids interested in Steam.

    ah the silvis back shop, I read about the place in shop up to date from 1907 on google read, it was qute a place back then as well as today, and at least its still intact and seeing life, soo soo much was lost around here around north east indiana, and ohio, we have depots preserved and running steamers with the gramling locomotive works and fort wayne railroad historical soc, but we have non of the old buildings that were shops still standing that are intact that I can recall in garrett, fort wayne, or waterloo, though I guess someone did grab the structure that made the 2 bay engine house in waterloo on the new york central and made it their barn so its still around, and we got the freight shed and one building out in a woods that date back to the b and o in garrett but non of the other structures were preserved though there were efforts to try to save the roundhouse and later the depot but that was torn down by the b and o or the c and o that owned them at the time said needed too much work to rebuild so hired a fort wayne contractor to tear it down and compleaded demo jan 23 1964 and set it on fire and caught a power pole on fire saved like one wall and a pit for run though inspections under the locos till about 1968.
    its good to see the two locos though see new life and will run again now if only more mainline railroads were favorable to excursions again, would love to see 765 brought up to garrett if even to be on just display, the train thats painted on city hall is modeled after 765 though the last class on b and o that ran were mountains and 4 8 2's not berkshires which are 284's and the redding railroad and well as mckeeys rocks shops in pennsylvania are still standing but long abandoned I belive.

      They are not. They gave away three locomotives, on of them the largest diesen engine ever built, to this place. The talk is that all will be restored and running. What would you bet not. UP is divesting itself of it's historic equipment in the name of profit. For them this is a giant tax write off - as are all "Donations" I would almost bet that in five years - 4014 and 844 will be given away also. All so the CEO's can have a bigger bonus than they already have. This year has been one of the most profitable in UP history. UP steam shops are likely the best equipped and most experienced with big engines in the country. Instead of restoring 3985 as they did with 4014, they "Give" it away. They are not so interested in their heritage when they give two of the larhest locomotives in their class away. Just like insisting on only an engineer in the cab of monstrous freight trains, this is all in the name of profit. Don't be fooled.

When it's "just" the railroad with a locomotive of theirs it's just a rehash of the whole reason why steam stopped being used because it's expensive compared to diesel.

    They seriously need to restore that 2-10-2 first. The Challenger already had it's share of fame running for years since it was first restored in the 1980's. The #5511 is a more obscure engine and if restored first would be the only operating 2-10-2 steam engine running in the entire western hemisphere unless you count the former Iowa Interstate Chinese QJ 2-10-2 engine's. Plus the UP #3985 is in worst condition than the UP #5511 not to mention that the UP #5511 would take less time to rebuild and restore since it's a smaller engine than UP #3985 and has less components and parts.

      3985 was parked for several reasons. The restoration was only enough to get her running. The boiler and firebox we're the main focus of that effort. The chassis and running gear are in need of a complete rebuild not to mention the tender( still numbered 4014) still needs to be converted to oil.
      In comparison, 4014 is , in essence, a new locomotive with new components and spares on the shelf. There is a difference between a rebuild and a return to service.
