A great video. Brought back memories of "Tear-ur-ring-out". I can remember arriving at the hut at mid-night to find the hut full. I typically hunted 2 or 3 km SSW of the Kaipo swing bridge. Great hunting. I even encountered 3 trout fishermen at the swing bridge who intended to follow the Kaipo down stream to the Mohaka. From there they fished and hunted following the Mohaka until they reached Mangtutu. Great country for adventure.
So many memories watching that trip, was my stamping grounds back in the seventies and early eighties, you really did well .I know how long and hard that trip was. What an awesome achievement that tramp was for you. On a side note I recently went back to an area I hunted in the Kiamanawas 30 plus years ago with three of my sons for a look around with a rifle. I could not believe how many Sika we encountered over 4 days (20+) was a great time for us came back with heavy packs.
Cheers Glenn, first couple of days knocked the stuffing out of me a little bit, slowly came right after that! It's magical country and I'd do it again. Good to hear there's a few deer about and you had success 🙌 Cheers BRB
Awesome trip Glen, we use to go there all the time when was a bit younger and fitter mate.Enjoyed watching this trip and refresh the old memories mate. Thanks thumbs up and best regards,, Tony.

Excellent Vid Glen...epic. I used to spend a lot of time hunting round Te iringa and staying in the hut when it was still there . I real shame that cost and bureaucracy prevented it from getting rebuilt. Always plenty of deer around in that area. Cheers Mate !!
Great to see the video of the journey Glen! That Radix rehydrated meal you gave me on the trail was THE BEST. I enjoyed it on New Year's eve at Studholme hut - what an improvement from my usual fare. (It got me thinking about new de hy recipes. Plus, it was accompanied by a left behind beer.) Good to see the footage, and glad to to have met you!
Pleased you found Studholme safely in the mist and what a bonus having a beer! That was an awesome adventure and thanks for watching our video. All the best for 2023
Well done. Great to see the Oamaru and Boyd once again. I suffered hypothermia on the Te Iringa tops and struggled with my two boys help through to Oamaru where I couldn't have lit a fire for myself. Later in life my heart caused trouble and eventually twice stented. Loved the beach forest and the tussock country vistas.
Loved it loved it! , even sitting here on my couch in Canada I could just imagine what it would be like tramping through the hills. Like I've said before just couldn't get enough of the back country when I was there 12 yrs ago. Thank you for an awesome video.
Great effort across some magic country and some iconic huts. Good to see the condition of the deer looked to be quite round? Kelvinator just doesn't change, every time I have been there is summer, bloody cold! Keep up the great videos, they are much enjoyed and appreciated.
Thanks Rod, we are blessed to have such amazing country to explore, all the huts a being well used and maintained. Yes the deer did look in good nic, dam shame we didn't get to sample some meat lol
@@BackridgeButcher I was training to run the traverse but need more time..maybe next year. Other than that just been weekend hunting which doesn't inspire me to film but keeps the hunting bug fed and watered.

Yep it sure shows what 1080 has done to the sika deer head count, if you had done the same trip pre 1080 id put a wage it would have exceeded 30,, and blue ducks a 10 plus head count,, Yeh i to use to walk up to the Te Ringa hut, After it burnt down a group of Local Taupo guys set up a re-build of the hut, but DOC wouldn't allow it,,,,!!
@@BackridgeButcher Last drop 2016 & was up to be done 2021 but for some reason it was put off, i herd the sika foundation had some thing to do with that, maybe wanting to do deer culls & gut bag test, count animal numbers etc, unconfirmed rumors maybe? but again 2022 & no drop so some thing is up,, Im not a fan off the sika foundation or DOC,, The hut well doc was going thru one of there "were going to remove huts from the bush" so it was given a no on a rebuild, So locals got together & donated what was needed for a rebuild aluminum joinery, timber etc but doc shut it down,,
Cheers Woodsman, from way over here in Hawke's Bay we only see positive things the Sika Foundation are doing especially helping to keep the Blue duck population healthy, this must be only good public relations for all the hunting community, wider NZ don't understand our passion for hunting, conservation and the backcountry, so this puts us in a good light, far better than the negative stories that are written in the woke newspapers these days
Awesome mate. I’ve been planning the same trip but starting with the Tongariro crossing then a ride over the desert rd. Waipakihi to cascade and oamaru for a resupply and down to makahu. Giving myself 2 weeks. Just got to get fit and find a support crew! Super lightweight gun might be nice too 😉. Keep up the great vids mate. With you all the way 🍻
