@@BackridgeButcher You could try that if it happens again, might work might not. I was a goat culler once and some dogs would take you to where they had something bailed and some wouldn't. If ya didn't have the dog you couldn't bail it. And by the way it went up hill after being hit it will probably live anyway. Don't sweat it mate dogs going well.👍
Hi I have a thermal spotter a complete game changer, yes you might pick them up in your binos but the thermal is so much quicker once you have learned how to use them and got used to them. I was always against having them but after trying I won't leave home without them
Awesome video man enjoyed that iv been to that kaweka flats biv about 4years just after the big snow storm that buggered that bush the track looks alot better nick than it was then, thermals it's one of those conversations u'll either love them or hate them I'll say no more ✌️👍 always sucks when you can't find the deer that was a good shot mate
Thanks Ruahine! Thermals are the elephant in the room right now, I believe about 75% of my clients use them now but not many want to talk about it 🧐 Cheer's for watching 👍👍
Was trying to explain this to a young fella just the other day. No matter how many years experience you have you will lose won or miss a few now and then. Got to take the good with the bad. It's all part of the formula
Loosing them is the worst feeling alright. Man it sucks! That shot looked good to me, almost wonder if Annie tracked straight in on it but the yearling who likely hung around then ran off and Annie then chased it which is what the first bail up would have been? Never know I guess aye and that’s the most frustrating part.
Not finding a deer sux, it’s one of those things that you never forget, if you care. you remember it clearly no mater how much time passes, excellent effort to recover it, well done.
Called in to KF Biv last summer ( Not too far for old farts as well as the young 'uns) Never have I heard so many kiwi calls late evening and early morning and kaka went all day. Well done trapping crew you are doing a great job. Please learn to reset the 200's so if they have been tripped you have another chance of capture before the crew goes through. Each trap is numbered and I am sure a quick E-mail to NZ hunter quoting number , date and catch species will be appreciated.
@@BackridgeButcher The lid is held on by screws, normally only a couple. A leatherman will do the trick. If I manage to knock over a veni and the heart is badly shot up (Or liver) putting some of that in the trap will pull in the ferrets and rats for the next few days. Don't forget to drag the heart/liver across the ground and right up to the entrance to the trap. Leaving small off cuts along the drag trail all helps too. Should be a vid out there somewhere showing how to do this
@@BackridgeButcher If you come across a rat head down and arse up in the trap, pushing it to the back of the trap and then resetting can work too especially if it's a female.
Its a discussion that needs to happen, I get tired of hearing about too many deer here and there, so why shouldn't we be able to use a great tool like this?? I don't believe those making the rules understand the technology and might be afraid of it
Awesome stuff team not the nicest to hunt in that sort of weather. Trust me we all know how use feel when ya shoot an hit an animal an can’t find it not a good feeling but awesome hunt
Brother. The permit wording is ambiguous. It says.Hunting with any night vision equipment, thermal imaging, infrared or heat detecting devices..it doesnt mean you cant use a thermal to find deer, just you cant use one to hunt them on a rifle
Sorry for the late reply Aston...Hunting with any night vision equipment, thermal imaging, infrared or heat detecting devices...is strictly prohibited on the standard conditions set out by DOC

Hard luck losing that hind but that’s how hunting goes sometime! You’re a tough bugger…I enjoyed the video. Keep up the good work! 👍👍👍
Thanks for keeping it real BRB. At times hunting is amazing, at others it is damn good resilience training!
We have to keep it real as there's to much fluffy stuff on social media, hunting is all about learning lessons

Id say it played out something like that mate

Your so right Peter, I remember the deer I have missed over the years more than the deer harvested
You can't use a Thermal spotter on DOC land but it's ok for them to drop 1080 everwhere. The logic of a Govt Dept.
Yup been lost off the Spur trying to find that "track". It's a jungle in there. I'd be glad to have gotten out let alone find that deer. Nasty
How long ago were you up Dicks spur Don?

How are the boxes sealed? I didn't realise we were allowed to reset them Timmo??
