I have been trying to watch less disturbing bad news and your channel is a perfect distraction from the woes of the world. Thanks Kate and Anna (enjoyed the plinky plonky music).
Kate, as I remember, you were doing the red quilt when I found you. You were responsible for getting me through the Pandemic and for that I thank you most sincerely.
As I enjoy your sorting and fabric making, I am picking apart some blocks that need repair on a quilt I made 31 years ago for my little 5 year old boy who is a 36 year old man now. He came for a two week stay and what do you think he did, first thing? Pulled the quilt out of a bag and asked if I could mend it. Oh, my heart! Of course I will. Your “homely” house, gentle voice and creativity are the perfect accompaniment to my loving project. What a joy to happen upon you this sunny Sunday in Wisconsin, USA! ❤
It makes me smile to see how many subscribers you have now. You are a special and lovely person and we all so enjoy watching your videos. Thanks for sharing!
I do a little machine patchwork but mostly do Epp. I have never been able to buy good expensive fabric then cut it up and sew it together. Fortunately I have many friends and aquaintences who give me all there scraps. So for around the last 50 years I have been using the bits big enough for a patch and the smaller pieces I Sew together on the elderly sewing machine into quite sizeable pieces that I store. Like you I do it in colour families. Also the same chums tend to give me the ends of thread reels. I know it makes me sound like a bit of what we call in the uk a skin flint but It makes me happy that my hobby is not very expensive and my friends feel virtuous that their scraps get used.
I think this is fantastic. Thank you for helping your friends lessen their guilt. Quilters hate throwing out scraps but the mountain of scraps can become so overwhelming.
I LOVE making “crumb” quilts . I pull a scrap out of the bin and sew it to the next scrap, if I can get 1/4” seam on all sides and still see the color of the scrap I use it. Don’t over think anything. Put your headphones on along with your favorite beverage . I give many to charities, very colorful and happy quilts. Something out of nothing , have fun
I love this year's theme of using what you have. I have purchased material for quilt ideas in my head over the past few years that I never get to while working full-time. But I retire this October, and can't wait to delve into all of my ideas and your ideas and inspirations as well. I am also one that just can't throw a scrap away. My mom always cuts squares out of leftover fabric and keeps them next to her machine and sews two together as her "thread bunnies", and then two to two etc. until she gets a quilt top which she turns into a sleeping bag for the homeless by sewing the top to an old blanket, folding it in half and sewing it up. I use your thread bunny method and am fortunate to have a friend that makes beds for the homeless shelters for dogs and cats and will take whatever scraps and pieces of fabric I am ready to give up to use as stuffing. Most pieces, if bigger than 2" x 2" though, I'm not ready to give up! I also have a drawer full of specialty fabrics from years of making outfits for American Girl dolls for the church fundraising auctions in years gone past. They aren't a "thing" that girls want anymore so I just keep all of the fabrics and patterns in a drawer for the future. I have two little granddaughters but they are both into crafts and active play instead of dolls. I have made them little outfits once in a while and I thought about making an all cotton patchwork skirt for the one that refuses to wear pants : ) All in the future. After October 10th, watch out as I will be sewing up a storm! In the meantime, I can't wait to see what you do with other collections of things that you have and follow you and Anna with your indigo dying project as well. Keep warm!
My favorite thing to do is sew little bits of fabric together when I don't want to think about what I'm doing. It's the most relaxing thing and I have new "fabric" when I'm done. Thanks for sharing Kate. I look forward to see your progress.
That’s what I will be doing with mine 😊 I’m using the random colors instead of sorting into families-when I first saw it done on a channel it was called “crumb piecing”; little bits & shapes of fabric ❤
I laughed whennI saw this today. I was doing the exact same thing this morning. I call it Frankenfabric! Mine are much scrappier, but I do like the colour coordination you have going. I too found you when you were making the red quilt. You saved my sanity during the pandemic. What a lot of lovely things you have accomplished since then! Thank you!
❤ Thank you so much for sharing your process. It’s the little bits said and done that really helps develops the meaning or the why. I don’t have a grandmother anymore to learn these little things from. Your channel is like someone that simply chats with you about what they are thinking. It makes all the difference in the world, even from across the Atlantic.
What a lovely way to spend a cold winter day. Banana bread out of the oven, hot tea and stew - but more importantly sharing it with lovely Anna. I LOVE the selections of music that accompanies your calm videos. Love from the State.
Kate, I live watching you. Last winter, I did a scrap perfect, making new fabric. This fall, I took those squares and made my great granddaughter a jacket using a sweat shirt It is beautiful and she wears it all the time. She has named it " GiGi's coat". She is 3 years old.
Hi Kate. This was extra great! After being a subscriber for several years, My interest in the channel is ‘refreshed’ , now I just started taking( finally) an interest in quilting. Still in the practice Mode I have just finished my SECOND little quilt; far from perfect ,but I display them as you do. Now I leave my sewing machine out all the time and I will try to address my scraps as you are doing! I cannot tell you the unbound happiness and inspiration your channel has brought . me. I have used much of your sewing advice in doing my little quilts. So, what would Kate do , I ask myself aloud if I get ‘stuck’ !!!!! ❤ Marilyn xx
Kate, I don’t know about you, but I get excited about fabric and my scraps, but also the scraps everyone else has. It is like an addiction and I need that fix. There seems to be no cure. It is a never ending joy! ❤️
Kate, thank you so much! I've been watching your videos for years now and you've become someone I admire a lot 🩷 You even inspired me to start my own RUclips channel 🤗 Sending lots of love your way on the lime green sofa 🛋
Thanks for posting this, Kate and Anna! I’m the go-to scrap lady for all my quilty friends. I did a quilt last year with the crumb piecing method. Using all different colors, I made 9x12” blocks, then cut wedges. I alternated these with all sorts of white, off-white, beige and light tan wedges. It is such an addictive process, and it utilizes lots of scraps. I also have that very same thread cutter, and I love it! It’s another great time saving gadget.
Does anyone else get the feeling Kate's Oliso iron is a living, breathing organism....? 🤣 Sometimes it sounds like it's breathing... Love this idea and it's fun to see so many fabrics I recognise (as I'm sure others do as well!). Lots of beautiful Kaffe Fassett fabrics, plus Brandon's too! Funny, I do NOT like yellow either but I have discovered that a very deep yellow goes really well with blues and purples - so I've been getting better about it. A bright lime green looks good too, and I tend to use that as well. The owner of my LQS knows I HATE yellow (and brown) and if anything really vibrant comes in, I'm the first person she thinks of..... I must have a 'type'.... 🤣🥰🙃 xxx
Hi Kate! I'm sewing piles of scraps too, and it is extremely satisfying. I'm sure it would be even more satisfying if I add banana cake! I look so forward to your videos on RUclips and Patreon and I've said it many times but I thank you again and again for making the coziest spot online and for all the inspiration.
Greetings from Northwest Ohio! ❤ I've been a busy bee all year working on my scraps as well. Made 60 10X10 blocks with EPP hexagon daisy's! I'm sewing on the sashing strips now. They are looking quite beautiful 😍. Love your channel! I'd love to send you a picture!
Your videos are a comfort for my soul. I miss my sewing machine and hope to repair it soon. I’m also considering the role my sewing habits can have in my life as I’m figuring out my next chapter of life. I wouldn’t want to let it go bc it keeps my mind focused and creative. So I’m seeing how to fit different pieces of my life together in a more easeful way for me.
Dear Kate, today is my 61 birthday and I'm thinking of all the good things in my life that brought me to this day. I really want to thank you for giving me the perfect sentence to explain what quilting means to me. It's like self therapeutic because it absolutely is helping me to clear my mind and makes room for creating things with my hands. So.. thank you for all the beautiful video tutorials and make some space on the limegreen sofa. I'm enjoying each and every video and it also brings lots of loving memories about me living in the UK for 5 years. I really miss London - the creative energy- and my friends and chosen family. I am looking forward to another year full of creativ ideas and lots of quilts. Big hug from Berlin, Re
Dear Kate, I have seen Jenny making her fabric; great idea; always a few surprises on what transpires. As a beginner quilter (at 75) I haven't yet accumulated enough scraps. Love banana bread; I always add chopped dark chocolate and crystallized ginger; give it a try, really takes it over the top. Thank you again for sharing all your delightful projects; I always look forward to them. Take care.
Jenny also talked about a book "15 Minutes of Play--Improvisational quilts" by Victoria Findley Wolfe. I started doing this when I first go in my quilt room. It's so freeing, you don't have to think about it. I have made several quilts...just a block a day and soon you have enough for a quilt!
I try to process scraps immediately. Either cutting them into usable sizes or by making a “bonus” quilt. The bonus quilt is usually a baby quilt that I can gift to our police department to give to children that could use a hug or gifted to our local animal shelter. If you are intent on using every scrap you can put the very small bits in a large pillow case for a dog bed. The red scrap quilt with the white sashing is stunning!
I understand completely about sorting colours! I have three bins of floral: light, medium and dark. It is really hard just deciding which goes where...and that's just florals!😂
Hello Kate and Anna, While I'm sitting here on the lime green sofa an idea came to me. Have you ever thought of trying to make a Cathedral Window quilt? The outside window can be made of muslin or however you want them to look like. The windows themselves are a great way to use up your wonderful assortment of scraps. Also you could machine stitch the window frames and then hand sew the windows. It's a win-win type of sewing project for you.
As I watched you sew together your fabric pieces I kept thinking "Kate is putting together a fabric jigsaw". Giggle, Giggle. Love it! Saw the glimpse of snow through your window and did a little shiver. The stew looked yummy as did the banana bread. Can you pass that around the lime green sofa please.
Your scrap idea is a perfect zen exercise to take our minds off of the craziness that is happening now. Thank God for your channel Kate. I’m inspired already!
Thanks Kate! Coincidentally I have just finished a quilt? top from saved off cuts from the last 15 years….sorted into widths and then randomly sewed together…went from a pile of scraps to a very colourful mismatched scrappy piece of fabric. Very satisfying! As always love your videos!
This is such a lovely way to make something out of the piles of scraps we all have in our sewing rooms. I look forward to working on a wee project like this one of yours. ❤
Mindless sewing is good for mental health...even more than planned precision quilts. They both have a place so we are never ever bored... (did I spell that right hahahah)... Miles of "piano keys" fit this category. There are LOTS of quilts that use them as a "fabric" and accents, and main bits. Just as you are doing, making likely squares with random bits, I did end up with a quilt I love ))). No quilt police. Just enjoy ))))
Hello Kate, watching you sort scraps and hoping and praying you and Anna are okay since your weather has been terrible with that bomb cyclone. Please let us know y’all are okay.
What! That's what I'm doing here in, finally, rainy San Diego Ca. I'm sorting to make hexies in blues. Thanks, Kate and Anna. I miss seeing you. all. I need something happy during this time of stress here in the US.
Just loved this episode, using beautiful scraps that would otherwise be in land fill. I have very few scraps of fabric left, and feel I can't justify buying more, age 79.
Good afternoon Kate. Your videos are so soothing to me. Your voice and the gentle music. I have so many snips and so on of fabrics from my projects. I can’t wait to try Jenny and your way. It is sunny and cold here in NW Iowa USA. We have temps last Monday of 17 degrees below zero as well as 40 mile per hour winds. It’s winter though so we bundle with many layers. We have no snow which is different for our area. Hope you are doing well and look forward to your next video. Thank you.
I 'make fabric' too nearly every time I sit at my machine. It's good for scraps. But it also loosens up my creative improv brain. It's just plain the best part of my process.
2025 is off to a slow start at my house. My sewing machine is in the shop. I have a small back up machine which is visually making hot pads with my scraps. Thank you for the inspiration.
I've also seen the Video with Jenny doing what you started today and I was intrigued then as I am now. It looks like so much fun. Can't wait to see what do with them in the future. Blessings and thank you for sharing with us.
I keep hearing a voice in my head, when I’m thinking about buying fabric or paper or things for the house, and the voice is saying, “Use what you have.” It’s your voice, Kate! “Use what you have.” Thank you for your inspiration, Kate, and here’s wishing you a happy birthday, too!❤
Hello Kate 🙂 I am working on a hexagon quilt using the large 3 inch templates and I’m using all my scraps. I know I’m biased, but I must say, it sure is looking good. I’m going to have to see what else I might want to make out of scraps. Thanks for the inspiration. I’m so very thankful to have found your channel. It’s a real joy to watch.
Hi Kate and Anna, again a lovely video. Seeing the fabric made of scraps then seeing the banana bread made me think about making a beeswax infused fabric bag for bread. Something I have more recently thought about doing. It can be used over and over. A great way to store bread. I love the idea of making use of fabric scraps. The stew and bread look delicious. Will definitely be looking forward to Friday “One More” on Patreon. From sunny Michigan.
A while back, I sorted through my scraps and cut them into squares--5 1/2, 5, 4 inches. As I was working on other quilts, I sewed the same-size squares together with the leader/ender method. By the time I finished my other projects, I had enough squares to make two quilt tops! This really is a great way to get a head start on other projects and reduce the leftovers! I've been also doing more EPP, and that's a great way to use up scraps. These will keep you busy, Kate!
now you have done it ..I was doing very scrappy squares..threw caution to the wind..but now gad I will try colours in lots ..looks great..not quite sure if I am thanking you or what..❤❤❤
Hi Kate and Anna, maybe you could make little piles of scrap fabrics for people who make junk journals? We always need just a little bit of fabric but in as many different colours as possible. 😇😜
I sew my crumbs onto 3" wide strips from computer paper, then add sashing and donate to my daughters church. My plastic bag got depleted, so am adding again to it. Lots of fun.
Thoroughly enjoyed watching this video great to sort scraps into colour i can watch you Kate for hours so mesmerising you never fail to put a smile on my face xx
When I saw Jennie’s video I started to do this as well. Now I actually store my scraps in colour families in one of those plastic drawer contraptions beside my sewing machine. Sewing like this is so much fun!. I have made so many little zippered bags, and fabric bowls, or anything that takes my fancy that I don’t have a specific fabric identified to use. Thanks Kate for another great visit!
As I watch you sort, I see myself setting a hexie pattern or a circle pattern for hand stitching epp shapes for use as applique or for repair patches on a quilt I have that is getting lots of torn areas. Putting together some small hexie flowers to add to borders of a quilt seems very doable and a good way to do epp without diving into making an entire quilt. Make some leaf shapes and butterfly wings and that scraps will be disappearing. Thanks Kate. You have got my brain going on this one.🙂
dear Kate..........this was soooooooo relaxing to watch your video.........and the stew looks delicious.......................Blessings and Greetings from Daggy,Kiel,Germany☘☘☘
Ooo Kate! Lovely! If I was doing that, I would put cardboard dividers in you scrap bin and sort as you collect. Saves the obsessing I know I would do. lol…should be very fun!
Linda Palaisy, a quilting teacher in Canada, calls this process scrap-eating. I like that, because it eats up all the scraps left around. You can use up all your leftover spools and bobbins of thread as well.
Scrap-eating - that is hysterical!!!
Love that❤

Hello Kate, watching you sort scraps and hoping and praying you and Anna are okay since your weather has been terrible with that bomb cyclone. Please let us know y’all are okay.
What! That's what I'm doing here in, finally, rainy San Diego Ca. I'm sorting to make hexies in blues. Thanks, Kate and Anna. I miss seeing you. all. I need something happy during this time of stress here in the US.
So glad to hear you're getting rain! California sure needs it.
So happy to hear you California folk are getting rain!
As a former San Diegan, I’m very, very happy for you!
Same here Riverside, Ca finally rainy also help the fires out too.
Just loved this episode, using beautiful scraps that would otherwise be in land fill. I have very few scraps of fabric left, and feel I can't justify buying more, age 79.
Banana loaf spread with butter is lovely too.
As you talk about yellows, my eye goes to your lovely bouquet of daffodils. Dreams of spring!
❤Grazie mi ha dato una grande idea come reciclare i ritagli!
Enjoyed watching you sort fabrics. Several times I recognized Kaffe Fassett fabrics I’ve used.
A beautiful snowy background, for a day of sewing all those scraps, it does become addictive once you start. thanks for sharing your ideas,
I do love touching and sorting and sewing scraps❤!
Thank you for bringing us along on your fabric creation. Lunch looked wonderful too😊
Just did that with Christmas scrap and made it big enough for a Christmas table runner
I love the idea of “making fabric” with my scrap fabric. ✂️🧵🪡🌹
I just love the sound of the sewing machine. I find it very soothing. Thankyou for sharing your experience
I've also seen the Video with Jenny doing what you started today and I was intrigued then as I am now. It looks like so much fun. Can't wait to see what do with them in the future. Blessings and thank you for sharing with us.
Love creating big chunks of fabric from little ones. Very meditative. Thanks Kate
Thank you for this video! I now know what to do with all my scraps!
O my, the lóvely yellow daffodils! Made my day. Also loved the video!
Useful and recycled !!!
I`m all about scraps right now, this looks like fun
I keep hearing a voice in my head, when I’m thinking about buying fabric or paper or things for the house, and the voice is saying, “Use what you have.” It’s your voice, Kate! “Use what you have.” Thank you for your inspiration, Kate, and here’s wishing you a happy birthday, too!❤
Yeah! A video to make my day!
Abundance projects! 👏🏻✨ Such a cozy, beautiful window into your world. Thank you, Kate and Anna!
Hello Kate 🙂
I am working on a hexagon quilt using the large 3 inch templates and I’m using all my scraps. I know I’m biased, but I must say, it sure is looking good. I’m going to have to see what else I might want to make out of scraps.
Thanks for the inspiration. I’m so very thankful to have found your channel. It’s a real joy to watch.
Love the way you called it a seam of yellow like you were mining. 😅
Love this kind of video, a creative project with fabric and some cooking.
I really enjoy your videos. I usually embroider while I am listening. I switch between crafts, too, depending on my mood.
WOW! WHAT A GREAT IDEA. I loved your reds and pinks quilt! Your videos are wonderful and welcoming. 😍😉
These will keep you busy, Kate!
now you have done it ..I was doing very scrappy squares..threw caution to the wind..but now gad I will try colours in lots ..looks great..not quite sure if I am thanking you or what..❤❤❤
Çalışmalarınızı çok beğeniyorum, yeni teknik öğrenmeyi seviyorum. Ellerinize emeğinize yüreğinize sağlık ❤❤❤❤😊
Good day dear Kate. Thank you.....will watch now before going to bed🌺🌺🌺🌺🇿🇦🇿🇦
Daffodils!!
Love the scrap sorting project, and the cooking lunch too mmmm looks yummy Kate. Xxx
dear Kate..........this was soooooooo relaxing to watch your video.........and the stew looks delicious.......................Blessings and Greetings from Daggy,Kiel,Germany☘☘☘
Always like your scraps-you're another with fabric! Im eager to see what you are make with your goodies too
Scraps- fun !😂❤
Ooo Kate! Lovely! If I was doing that, I would put cardboard dividers in you scrap bin and sort as you collect. Saves the obsessing I know I would do. lol…should be very fun!
This is one of my favorite things to do! I do it when I want to have a think about my next project. It’s almost like meditation.
Thanks again for sharing your ideas on using up scrap fabric ,fantastic idea,oh so love the snow looking out your windows, absolutely beautiful ❤
I love this idea Kate. And I especially love the flower thread cutter!! So very clever!! I hope you have a beautiful day ☀️💐🦋
Kate. I am loving your calendar. Thank you love. From NYC 💚💙💜
