This is my performance of my brand new illusion for the TV show Penn and Teller Fool Us.. It never made the final series due to time issues and editing problems. I will be back bigger and better next time.

@DavidMastersMagic
@6:37, we can see that the prop reveals the trick but at @6:43 we can clearly see how Penn hides the evidence. Kudos to Penn for this act of kindness towards protecting the magician from more shame.
Jeez
He seriously hearted this comment calling him a pathetic joke of a “magician” 🤣🤣🤣
6:42 penn closing the underneath trap door, its incredible that he has so much respect for magician to cover the blunder
Trap door? Ha ha ha! He left the stage in stand the box was sitting on!
indeed, using the trap box beneath
Yes, because you pointed it out, I went back and also saw Penn
close the trap door. Why was Teller needed to explain in secrete
how the trick worked. The performance was goofed up.
Wow. I already loved Penn. But just got even more respect now
Classy move indeed
6:43 Penn goes in and pushes the trap in the floor closed, because it got stuck at the end of the trick and Penn is a professional giving courtesy to another professional.
Absolutely this kind of trick won't fool P&T.
I love how David Masters still reply and give likes in the comment even this video was 11 years ago.
Did anyone noticed Penn fixed the failed trap door ? ... well the magic failed b4 then anyways ... it's hilarious when the judge fixes your fuckups ...hahahaha
I didn't see it bro, time stamp plz

Great catch. Hilarious

6:43 should thanks penn for covering how the trick was done. . both of them was good . .
A lot of people go on this show knowing they won’t fool these guys but it’s still an excellent experience and a great way to get recognition.
Yes, but most of them are more honest about it. Like in season 5 we saw a juggler who didn't pretend that he invented juggling, and we saw an old mentalism act which the magicians' knew Teller would know inside-and-out, and they didn't pretend otherwise.
Just here to say that I really like your attitude on this youtube comment section. It doesn't matter if people say your act is boring or if it was obvious that you couldn't fool them or that you were nervous performing you are giving a bit of a heart to everyone. Kudos to you sir, and nevermind people who are just good at commenting: you did a fine job and i hope your career in magic is alive and well!
6:42 professional courtesy.
Now THAT'S classy, they could easily let that door open and make the trick crumble on his own, but they wanted to keep the ilusion the much they could
Do love watching magic tricks, even after watching The Masked Magician videos and trying to spot how the tricks are done.
Is all part of the fun for me.
At 6:43 Penn slapped the false bottom of the box right after it opened & you can see it bounce ....
Even Johnathan clearly knew how this was done.
Jason Jackson yeah. When penn fixed the trap door.... oh boy
@6:43 when Penn has to correct David's own faulty props haha. No idea how David thought he'd get away with such a generic stage trick, let alone not paying attention to his props.
He looked right at it and ignored it
not gonna even bother watching because of all the negative comments but all the hate comments getting hearted by the guy who did the magic trick or whatever he did in the video is kinda funny
I am a magician myself and a fan of magic and Dave Masters is in my list of favorite magicians.
Penn and Teller always encourage the magicians performing on their stage. They were so nice to him even though Penn spotted the trapdoor
Congrats to you for the attempt and also a nod to Penn for being a magic homie and doing something that should not have been caught on camera. I wish you the best in future trick design and improved workflow performing this illusion.
I have the sense that Teller was offering some tips or constructive feedback during that long chat.
It has been 11 years so it is normal that we have seen this trick done not better but bigger, he keeps it very simple and speeds up some parts while other parts drag a bit. Usually the whole preparation of this trick takes the most time, showing everything that is used, and the trick itself goes very fast so to dazzle the audience, here the box going up and down and up again takes a lot of time, the burning spikes also seem a bit an afterthought, nowadays there would be a timer and the box would fall on the spikes. The essence of the trick is there and is still great, but that trick is one that has been revealed so many times that even today it is impossible to give this trick a twist that it will be able to surprise audiences. The masked magician had his reasons for doing what he did, but he destroyed a lot of tricks, especially the bigger acts of illusion.
Tellers face from the very beginning just said "Shoot me"
The minute the assistants left the stage Teller's head was turning every direction to catch a switch
As soon as i saw the "assistants at the back of the stage as he was calling they guys up. I was like "I'm not even a magician... i know what's going to happen, how, and how it works. " Poor Penn & Teller were very kind to this man.
You are a great guy!! With all the mixed comments of criticism and encouragement, it’s admirable how you have taken and reacted to the feedback which I think is key to great success. Hopefully you’ve been able to continue and grow as a magician these last ten years!
I now know why it never aired.
Oh my. It's sort of the epitome of "That's five minutes of my life that I'll never get back." I feel bad for everyone involved. Bigger is not better.
And since this day there was never another ginger allowed on Pen and Teller.
The amount of hate in the comments just goes to show how many people have never tried something significant in their life
Agreed... I’d love to see any of them put themselves out there and try something like this!
@TheBrabon1 That may be fine but the over-bluntness being provided here is absurd.
Penn & Teller looked bored. They knew the secret.
There is a lot of hate about this, let me give one piece of love. Props to Peen and Teller in being professional and kind to a fellow performer.
Looked incredibly nervous. You could tell they knew the game before it even started, though.
But hey, at least he got his name out there!!
Wish u the best David, hope you be back with something bigger next time..
Penn and Teller dancing around was everything. Lol
"I will be back bigger and better next time." What a great attitude -- a lot of people, performers or not, could benefit from sharing it. Penn and Teller seem to be nice guys who are always supportive of the magicians who appear on the program. Hope you enjoyed the experience even if you didn't make it to air. Look forward to seeing you next time.
I've never seen so much toxic or mean comments in a fool us video. I don't understand why. Even if the trick isn't great, what's wrong with you all...
As always, Gonzalo, I don't know how he did it and I don't want to know how he did it. I come here to be fooled and this bloke fooled me good and proper. That's what entertainment is all about and I enjoyed myself immensely so sincere thanks to all involved.
I could give you three reasons, besides the general fact that this is the internet and it is easier to criticize than create.
1) even before 11 seasons of P and T Fool us, and The Masked Magician, this is pretty basic for anyone with a small bit of magical study. I saw something very similar the very first time I saw a stage magic show. There is NOTHING new here. Furthermore, he comes here with this attitude like he thinks this is an original trick. By contrast, we often see magicians coming on with some pretty amazing mentalism or cups and balls, which don't fool P and T, and the magician says something like "yeah, I knew I couldn't fool P and T with that one, I am just grateful for the exposure." I have more respect for those magicians. In the most recent season, there was a guy who was basically just a juggler, and he didn't try to pretend he invented juggling.
2) look at Penn's irritation when the magician has his assistants shackle his arms, without letting P and T see it. The magician isn't even trying to pretend that these shackles aren't BS. Then, look at P's and T's boredom when they have to hold the chain for a few minutes, pretending they don't know that the magician is long gone
3) the big reveal at the end is actually a huge disappointment. What a great lost opportunity. Do you know what would have been a really great trick? We put the box down safely, open it up, and the magician is still inside, with eleven scalding holes in his clothes. Now THAT would have been impressive! Imagine the look of surprise on Teller's face as he realizes that the magician was in the box the whole time, or, somehow, managed to quickly reenter, without the help of that big bulky bass the thing was standing on at the beginning. As soon as we know the magician wasn't even in the box (and can't get back in without the assistants sliding the base under it) the trick is ruined.
This would be like if I said "Pick a card, any card! Now put it on top of the deck! Now, I am going to hold the deck inside this opaque box for a few minutes. Now examine the deck. Surprise, your card isn't even in the deck anymore!"
Still, I have to respect David Masters for posting this video and taking all the comments. Liked and subscribed, sir!
"press record because you're going to want to see this again"
*never airs*
It's on Netflix
I can't record that! :p
usually when you're onstage and watch a illusionist act you pretty much know how it's done but if you're in the audience and don't have no views it's pretty damn amazing
I think he did great
Classic trick of this kind. It was not necessary to whisper in the ear - a confident magician must not have doubted the statement of Penn at all.
@6:43 you can see penn fixing the trap door so the entire audience doesn't see it.
Or so they saw it even more.
Nobody was fooled that day
To be honest I never expect he would want to fool pen and teller with that very common illusion.. 😀
Me either, was just for the experience.
Such a great song for the first performance
Agree
The biggest mistake was bringing Penn and Teller on stage
6:43 lol
anytime something is rolled off stage thats when the
switch is done.
right before the box is lifted into the air one
of the assitance pulls the cart out where the silver box
was sitting on...he is in the cart. you would be amazed
how the cart is made, looks like nothing could be
hidden in it but thats where people squeeze in the
well made cart...camera angle is very helpful and
tv audience doesnt catch it. Siegfried and zRoy vegas
show had all kinds of stuff like this. we sat in the PIT
which was front row and off to the side. we were told
before the show we would see how many tricks were
done and for us not to tell anyone..we sighed nothing
but clearly it was more entertaining seeing close up
how the tricks were done! even though we knew how
a few tricks were done before we saw the show it was
pretty cool to see how the animals were squeezed
into small areas as the audience thought the animas
disappeared...plus Roy had body double, which
was later a slot contest host after the show was cancelled!
at least he stayed with the casino and had a job!
When the cage lifts and you can see it from below, it's doesn't seem to be closed properly. Both Penn and Teller look bored. This trick simply could not have been aired it just doesn't pass QC.
I think the biggest flaw was how the cage lowered down onto the spikes. If it had a solid floor this would not have been possible. The only way for the cage to lower down over the spikes was for the floor to fold in, thereby giving away the fact that the floor folds in, which in turn exposes the trick. That seemed to be a huge oversight
Long Journeys
Trap door on the stage?
No, He hides in the box below it, and at 4:35 the assistant pulls it out from under it and rolls it to the back , where they switch places.
@@itizme8072 trap door in the metal box
Did you liked alll the comments!!!!!!! Hats off to your positivity man.
Any feedback is great
The Masked Magician exposed this kind of trick a long time ago. I don't hate this trick, but it needs polish. I hope to see you get better!
I don't understand the hate coming from the comments for this video. Being able to perform in front of two Iconic Magicians in itself is amazing and to do an entertaining trick like this in front of them must have been nerve racking. I'd like to see you haters go there and try any of these things. It's one thing to understand how a trick is done, it's another thing to perform it live in front of an audience AND Penn & Teller. Give credit to David. This was entertaining to watch nonetheless.
Thanks
You did I an amazing job
Don’t listen to those haters there jerks
I was just thinking the same
4:55 - 4:57 when David is walking back on stage you can see the third masked person pop his head from behind a part of the set behind Penn !!! Busted !!!!😎
Unfortunately as soon as I saw the size of the box I realized his out, before he got into it.
Nice presentation though.
I scrolled the comments first and expected the trick to be a total failure. I was pleasantly surprised. Yes we have seen this illusion before with different methods but you did just fine.
Music choice is O Fortuna from the opera Carmina Burana
The masked magician covered a lot of similar illusions where an assistant who was in the box would generally crouch down into a small space below the box or cabinet on top so unfortunately the audience is on the alert for such escape mechanisms. Pity the flap on the trap door decided to slip up at the end. So important to have equipment that doesn't glitch like that. Fortunately Penn flipped it back down.
Not a badly done illusion, just a little unlucky on the night.
Shame it didn't get aired. It would have been good publicity for you. I'm sure though that you would have enjoyed the experience.
This was my exact same thought, After the End I wend back to look where the Switch had taken place, and I had forgotten the prop wheeling the box that was taken back stage, as soon As I saw it was the ahh ha moment, and good catch on Penn closing the flap at the end lol, I had to go back and watch that.
This may not have made it to TV, but it's in the edit on Netflix (S01E03 Solid Gold Fish).
Ha didn't know that.. Thanks
@@DavidMastersMagic Looks like they had to cut out Alan Hudson's routine from the original edit because he uses a lot of music they couldn't clear.
Penn and Teller agreed that this was done much better than what was done in Vegas. (I just said this due to some of the comments below.) Great job!
Didnt go exactly correctly there with the mechanics of the whole thing... but with that said.. I doubt I could contort myself in such a manner. Well done!
Good job David. I'm sure it's not easy performing in front of P&T. Nice theatrics as well.
Very cool.....I dont care about how the trick is done....I just love "magic"
You didn't even fool me and i dont even know magic.
A great piece of performance art. 'Sure the secret behind the magic may not be too difficult to figure out, but the effect is tremendous.
I know this trick since 20 years or more. There was a show on TV with a masked magician, who exposed tricks - like Penn and Teller :D He did the exact same thing...
Sorry, this was a bit sad. It was a standard trick that P+T must have seen a hundred times and even if it had gone perfectly with no glitches it didn't have anything to make them think. There was some awkward moving about of Jonathon and P+T. Unfortunately I think the method was pretty obvious to everyone too. P+T looked quite bored while they were holding onto the chains and the performance dragged on after (for them) the important bit had long passed. The cameras even missed the reveal at the end!
EDIT: In retrospect I think my comment sounded a little mean, so I've rewritten it.
As an ex-TV guy myself, I should know better than to judge an unedited performance on P+T, as the edit will tighten up a lot of the slightly 'eggy' moments.
Still over a million views and been on Netflix and had a great time... 👍💪
Please see my re+write comments 🙂
Although it didn't fool them, We should appreciate this act, it's not easy to perform such elaborate act and I enjoyed it.
This is “The Room” of magic tricks.
If nothing else, you're one of the few people who know what Teller sounds like
That was the real trick
I certainly understand why it wasn't aired. Wasn't really fair to have P&T to not actually be able to watch as they were to the side of the illusion. Not up to the standard of other acts. Not really a very fresh trick.
Seemed silly to bring Penn and Teller up considering the switch was so obvious :/
only my own snoring woke me up from that snoozer
Min 6:42/43 penn close the door in the bottom of the box. I think he also knows how it is done. Not fooled.
Wow, good catch there.
I mean... We all see the spikes go through the bottom, so clearly there was a empty bottom.
As soon as I saw the masked & robed creatures lumbering about my first thought was the magician will end up as one of them.
It's interesting how long it took for Teller to talk to him afterwards. Getting some tips from a veteran perhaps? ;)
We so did not see the whole damn rig shake and jump at 4:25 when you dropped down the trap door into the bottom section that was taken away. Totally didn’t see that how on earth could penn and teller see especially at 6:43 where penn closes the trap door mind blown lol
That was fun to watch. Lucky you, getting to go do that for P&T.
Congrats & sorry it wasn't shown.
That is 100% safe. Nothing went wrong in rehearsals. Most obvious illusion I’ve ever seen on this show. Not hating, just saying...
and his banter of danger and things going wrong and hot in there and bla bla bla, was annoying. He was out of that box a second after they closed it.
That said.... it does take balls to get up there. He performed it well for the most part. I have just never liked these types of illusions. I’m not a big stage illusion dude. I’m more of a close up magic guy. Maybe I’m just a dick. Lol. Much respect for the performer. Truly.
exactly, once you see a huge shape getting rolled in or out of stage, it's over.
Part of me was hoping the stairs and the robed/masked figures were a misdirect and he would reappear in the box unharmed and in a straight jacket, like, invert the traditional trick.
If you were in the insurance biz, you'd never say 100% safe, or think he lied about mishaps in rehearsals. Any time you have temporary construction on stage supporting a human's weight, injury is a possibility. How about those high schoolers who fell into the orchestra pit a few years ago when the cover gave way? When I was in school a friend right next to me doing a standup bit on stage walked to the front of the orchestra pit cover, and it came loose and vaulted him into the 2nd row. How about George Reeves doing Superman flying and having the cable give?
Popping up in the crowd is more impressive and doesn't give the secret away.
I knew there was going to be a switch. but I still never saw it. that was really good. I enjoyed it.
10 yrs ago ...it was fire
After watching multiples fool us. It does seem hard to pull off unique tricks. Idk if the show takes people as filler or not. But with acts like this one. There can only be 1 coarse of action. And they nailed it right away. People in mask = a switch performance. A box with a moveable platform = the escape room. Now if the platform was see threw, or so thin that you couldn't use it as a hideaway. So you had to stay in the box. Then that would have been impressive.
Just a LITTLE obvious...
All these hateful comments toward David is disgusting to me. I say at least he tried, and youre not going to be perfect when first starting out in something you desire to do. Give this chap a break. I wouldn't say hateful things to someone learning how to ride a bike, would you?
I wouldn't join a competition on mountain bike BMX if I had just taken the training wheels off, either... Would you?
I agree that there's a line that needs to be drawn, but most are just stating the obvious... Even if they're being dicks about it.
You seem to like all your comments. Very dedicated.
Even Penn and Teller look bored by it.
Wow this guy really liking all the comments???😅
How did you have a close call in rehearsals when you're in the cart before the box is lifted?
there was a spider in the cart. A BIG SPIDER!!!
Once the reveal is clearly going to be he is not in the box, then all that time spent lighting the spikes on fire becomes obviously staling. I don’t get why he says he designed this unless he just means they he literally drew up the standard blueprint for a box with a trap door.
I just want to talk about this because nobody seems to be talking about it. He has got his full weight on the trap door, he’s sitting on it. Which makes this trick way more difficult to figure out.
There's enough depth in the box to move off and open it.
"good luck David"
"wish me luck!"
Gonna blame nerves for that one lol
Penn closed the trapdoor to try and make sure the generalized public didn't figure it out. Remember, they do try to not give away secrets so people can still have that "air of mystery."
He was being kind and trying to protect the performer.
Errors happen-- it's why having big things such as boxes and such are sketchy. Things can go wrong. Things will go wrong.
Hell, he didn't even fool me.
Yes I know what the base of this trick is.
I'm thinking that 6:45 pretty much tells us why this wasn't aired.
AJ Green I know this was 6 years ago. But did he do something that I’m not aware of?
Deadpool the trapdoor stays open, you can see penn slap it closed behind him
Yep. Didn't really enjoy this. Super cheesy and obvious
You can see a flicker of something at the very bottom of the silver box on the crate. Must be where he is moving down into the crate on the trolley.
6:33 - 6:43 will be why it didn't air.
Penn tried to save it but I think it would've been too much footage (not to mention the crux of the trick) to remove so that the trick wasn't revealed.
Gutting that the prop failed on him like that.
You could do this kind of trick before all the reveal shows and videos. Maybe we were the better off for it then.
What I'd really like to know is what did David and Teller say to each other, and Penn and Teller say when privately discussing the act? Because David clearly loves performing magic but has so much room for improvement at least judging from this one performance. Penn and Teller spent a lot more time discussing the act with each other and Teller spent a lot more time talking to David than was necessary for them to explain that they weren't fooled. When Penn and Teller were talking to each other, was it about the flaws in David's act, how to explain the method in code to the audience in case anyone hadn't figured it out yet, or what to say to David to encourage his love of performing magic but also encourage him to develop skills he needed to become a better magician? I like to imagine Teller gave David an honest and brutal critique while encouraging him to work hard to improve his skills as a stage magician.
Time and editing constraints? C'mon dude. It wasn't aired because at 6:45 Penn closes the trap door that you escaped into the GIANT wooden platform through. It's such an obvious trick even w/o the trap door getting stuck and it doesn't matter who does the trick. Needs to be retired by every magician in the business.
"It's not 100% safe. Sometimes I get stuck in the box before they lift it up. Sometimes I get trapped in the fake pallet and we lift it up too soon.. You know.. " lmao
this particular illusion is something they have never seen before I have designed ??? What are you smoking D. Copperfield did this before you were a twinkle in your dads eye
Nice trick, didnt fool them but he was a good sport about it still...
Painfully obvious he was in the little platform that was under the box he was supposed to be in. It was wheeled off stage and was very obvious. Still decent performance.
Why does it feel like the video was originally 16:9 and then squashed to 4:3? Also, what's the name of the chant in this video again?
O Fortuna.
An illusion I'd love to see is having a participant either describe a simple picture or draw it on a piece of paper or white board, then the magician sprays or splashes paint on a canvas and it only sticks to the part of the canvas that creates that picture.
There wasnt anyone in it during the whole thing.
There is a VERY THICK Table under the entire setup. Which contains enough space to lower himself into .
And At 4:35 the assistant on the right, goes to the rear.
You then see him bend over and pull the table out from under it , bringing it to the back
This is where David Masters climbs out and switches places with the assistant.
