  • So I always wish that I knew the parameters that affect a DIY build before I begin to attempt it, like "what makes the most difference?" or "What parts do I have to really care about and what parts can I afford to fudge?"
Well with that in mind, I decided to make these videos the way I wish I could have 'em, in the hopes that they'll help others.
So in this video I go over the parameters of what makes a good DIY slow speed diamond grinder, or diamond lap. Using some cheap lappidary/polishing diamond wheels and a windscreen wiper motor, I was able to make a little tool that really helps sharpen tungsten carbide lathe tools & even carbide sandvik scraper blades.

I'm using brake disks with diamond paste mounted on a lathe. No fine dust.

Very nice build, I have a question for you regarding the carbide blades for your scraper, Is there a South African supplier for those, or did you need to import those? T.I.A.

Thanks, so I searched high and low for Carbide blanks, the most promising lead was the guys that do carbide tipped scrapers for conveyer belts for the mines. I eventually found a genuine Sandvik scraper from a guy on marketplace down in Durban, no idea where he got it, but it means they at least exist here. Other than that I've built 2 home made scrapers using square slab face mill inserts with no chip breaker geometry, but also not common anymore

@@Mark_How Thanks for the reply, knowing they exist over here is positive at least. The search continues on.
