Ursula’s voice actress was a broadway star, she could act, and improvise. I swear they only casted Melissa because of her body type.

The character design even breaks the realism. Sebastian is a ghost crab, they live on beachs, not underwater.

You know who would've worked perfectly for the role of Scuttle? Dan Povenmire, the voice of Doofenshmirtz in Phineas and Ferb. Hearing Doofenshmirtz's voice come out of Scuttle would've been the best part of the movie. No questions asked

It felt like a shoe horned "humans are so weird" thing. Most fish eat fish. Some fish eat their own children. The shark that was chasing her in the opening eats fish. Her friend flounder eats fish, crabs eat fish. It's actually weirder that mermaids don't eat fish.

You know, I kinda prefer the mermaids of Disentchantment (even though the show has a lot of problems) , chilling around on some isle like seals feels kinda right for them. And then they would know what fire is and could even use it themselves to grill some fish or whatever.

Her voice sounds the way it does because her throat is damaged from all the D's she's sucked of directors, producers, writers, and executives in order to get where she is today. That was one of the biggest sins of this film. I really liked this film, but I do wish we had a drag queen as Ursula - I hope they cast a drag queen in the broadway verison soon!
I actually read the Ursula’s original design was inspired by the drag queen Divine, so that would’ve been super cool.
“Pink Flamingos was on an endless loop at the Bijou [Theater] at CalArts when I was a student there,” Minkoff says of the classic John Waters film. “Divine seemed like such a great, larger than life character, and it just seemed like a funny and quirky idea to take [Ursula] and treat her more like a drag queen.” - From a Vogue article about it.
It wouldn't be family friendly though.
You can't deny that Awkwafina really channeled a squawking sea bird throughout her performance.
She channels that in every performance she is in. So casting for Scuttle is 10/10.

Not only other fish, whales are mammals and eat fish. Seals, otters, polar bears (and I think other bears), countless species of birds and way more animals ALL EAT FISH 😂 Disney owns National Geographic, that info they could have quickly emailed them internally to check…

The idea of merpeople not eating fish is dumb. They shouldn't be restricted to vegan diets. In my novel Rubber Girl, the titular superhero's civilian identity Katie Elaz went to a McDaffy's restaurant with her boyfriend Robert Patrix, their classmate Arthur Fisher and Arthur's mermaid girlfriend Selina Gill who gets around on a water wheelchair. And Selina ordered a tuna fish sandwich to establish that she's not vegan.
When you mentioned "Let's highlight the singer and not the character" it all made so much sense, it's like they don't want the characters anymore, that's why the remakes feel so soulless. Meanwhile you have the actress who played Vanessa in this remake and gave her 200% on it and everyone loved it because it represented the ACTUAL character.
the actors for ursula, eric, triton, and ariel fell flat to me. it's genuinely only vanessa's actress that stood out. she really gave it her all. meanwhile all the other characters felt like a worse version of their original counterparts
1:15 - Look at that lighting. Look at that detail. The hand-drawn animation, the gaze in her eyes... Everything matches so perfectly. Compared to that, the live action one is... meh.
@@audreyelizabeths Fr the actors/actresses didn’t really express much emotion and it was awkward to watch. It was like watching a middle schooler reading from their flashcards for a class presentation. Vanessa put her all into that character and it was the best part of the movie.

2d animation is infinitely cheaper, if they thought it was marketable they would be doing it. Disney's only value is their existing IP. you can complain all you want about these movies being soulless dogshit but they're made to make money and they make lots and lots of money

@@QGfk1 Just as YMS said these IPs was the Disney renaissance. There are large groups of Disney fans who eat this nostalgia up like it's gold. Idk even know why we're surprised anymore. Disney did the same thing with their straight to dvd era. An crazy enough it works. This live action made more than the animated movie by 300 million.
2D films don't do well with modern audiences. Disney already tried this with Winnie The Pooh and ended up shuttering their entire 2d animation film department from disinterest.
The disturbing thing is these Live action garbage films are insanely popular, grossing more than the originals.
You know what’s really sad? I guarantee you they had to force Skuttle’s conversation to be underwater because it would’ve been too much extra work to animate the conversation on the surface with rippling waves and whatnot. So in this movie that’s supposed to be way more realistic and “live action,” we get to see a bird talk underwater
No it's because they made a point that Ariel never disobeyed Triton's order that no mermaid go to the surface UNTIL the night of the shipwreck.
They could have easily avoid that with making the rocks they were talking on bigger, so it fills out the majority of the screen...and they only have to animate a bit of water..

Ariel’s apparently never breached the surface before but she still has all these human artifacts and trusts Skuttle as an authority on them. Why did Skuttle ever talk to her in the first place?? Did she just dive down to Atlantica one day to hang out, and that’s how they met?? Why would a seagull want to dive several hundreds of meter underwater??

With her chatty characterization, it's not farfetched that Scuttle might have fished/divebombed into Ariel when she was longingly looking up at the surface one day, and Scuttle dove back down to say "Sorry, about that, kid! Whoa, what are? Are you a mermaid? I HAVEN'T SEEN ONE IN FOREVER!!" blah blah until Ariel asks her about humans and from then on they meet up at that place.
More like they wrote themselves into a corner because, in the live action movie, Ariel never ventured to the surface prior to spotting Eric's ship sailing overhead; but they wanted to keep the dinglehopper scene in the movie - which happened before that fated evening in the animated classic.
The only solution for that screw up was to make Scuttle a diving bird (that could inexplicably talk/breathe under water for a limited time).
The entire ending is what makes me so blindingly angry at modern writers that I think I have become actually ill.
The entire point of the climax of the animated movie is that King Triton was wrong about humans. It is not just that Ariel fights back and learns her lesson it is also about Triton witnessing a human, who has no stake in this fight outside of his selfless Love for his daughter, to attack a creature many thousands of times bigger than him.
It's a win for the ocean and a win for the land. Removing that from the movie removes the plot from your movie.

They changed all the choreography and half of who's singing what in ways that make 0 sense. Of course they changed that too. Whoever did this understood 0 things about this movie thematically.
I agree.ita ridiculous to not let Eric strike the fatal blow to Ursela. it was a main plot point that king triton has prejudged all humans leading to bitterness distrust and a whole lot of misunderstanding. But now Eric doesn't do anything to redeem humans, once King Triton comes back from the dead, there is no reason to not be furious at Ariel or accept her and Eric as a couple.

I think the reason they made Ariel forget her deal was because someone was really upset at the idea of a character having an ulterior motive for kissing someone. In which case, just add a scene where Ariel can't bring herself to kiss him. I don't know why they thought having her lose her agency was the better option.
It already had to be a true loves kiss so the forgetting part isn't even necessary. Like regardless of ulterior motive she liked Eric to begin with and was falling in love with him with or without the deal.
I think they were trying to adress the ”plothole” of why Ariel just doesn’t grab Eric by the neck and forces him to kiss her as soon as she meets him.

That wouldn’t even be a plot hole, either, because in the original film Ursula explicitly explains that it can’t just be any old kiss, it has to be special, true love’s kiss. Ariel grabbing and kissing Eric wouldn’t work for obvi reasons, then, anyway.

The fact that they not only didn’t cast a drag Queen to play Ursula, but then had the gall to invite a slew of drag queens to the premiere for promotion… Devine was literally the inspiration for the character, and Pat Carrols voice was so perfect because it had that ominous male like undertone to it… it could’ve been such a cool full circle moment.
It'd probably be more accurate to say that the original VA had an ominous "masculine" tone more than "male", because she IS supposed to be a woman, just a very husky voiced one.
That's so awful that they did drag queens that dirty tho and they couldn't even grace us with a (cis) woman who could do The Voice™️ right... C'mon Disney, do you want your woke accolades or not??? 😂

Actually? It's mostly the people at the top who get paid millions. Usually the director and the top actor(s). (And even then? Sometimes they get stiffed too.)
The vast majority of the people involved in production are paid largely in exposure. This is one of the reasons why the writer's guild and actors are on strike right now.

I feel llke behind the scenes there's a tug of war between "let's make it all different!" and "let's keep it the same" and they both lose at once.

Eric’s 2 plot reasons for existing in the original are to
1. Be the love interest
2. Drive the boat into Ursula.
Like. That’s the agency he has in the original, being a boat boy who can help beat the big bad and wrap things up in a satisfying way. Everyone has something to do.

And like, fine, I guess Disney wanted to really hammer in the whole girl power stuff by having Ariel deal the final blow, but it genuinely makes no sense narratively either
Eric took down Ursula because he wanted to save Ariel whilst having no ulterior motive - something that crushes King Triton's negative understanding of humans. It's what allows Triton to see the error of his ways and allow Ariel to pursue her love for Eric unrestrained.
Also, just as Adum mentioned in the video, how tf does Ariel know how a ship even works? She's literally only seen ships either as deep sea wrecks or above the surface, where she's so far behind that she can't see how the ship works
Not to mention Ariel having already saved him once, so he's basically returning the favor.

15:53 I don't think that take was what's intended. Imo, OG scuttle completely believed the nonsense he's feeding Ariel. He's not a trickster, he's deluded. Look at his face at 16:11 and tell me that he's purposely feeding her a lie. It's more possible that the smug looks he gives is because he really believes himself to be an expert, and Ariel just doesn't know enough to call him out.
There's also other moments later in the movie, like when he seems to earnestly listen for Eric's pulse by putting his foot near his ear, or when he tries to add 'mood music' before Sebastian steps in. Moments of floaty animation and manic expressions.. Like the movie kind of goes out of it's way to show you, the viewer, that he's just that stupid, but he's good at disguising it.

I agree. The other moments you mentioned from the original suggest that Scuttle is buying his own bullshit, and I think that's a lot more endearing than Adam's idea of a Scuttle who is essentially taking advantage of a kid to get entertainment out of lying to her?
It makes him seem much more malicious than he should.
The remake definitely should've had Ariel go to Scuttle to ask about human things rather than have her just fall into a random scene, but bits like "humans seem to hate coconuts" don't actually seem unreasonable for the character to think.
Agreed, Scuttle is overconfidently making shit up as he goes along but in a way that he himself would believe it. It's not like he enjoys being wrong, he enjoys sounding right

It's VERY funny that they put so much focus on Eric and his sailing skills, but that ends up just being a vestigial part left over from the original movie because it NEVER PAYS OFF in the film. He and Ariel swap places and she, a person who's never set foot on a boat before and doesn't know what a steering wheel is, steers the ship into Ursula rather than the person who LITERALLY got a song about sailing inserted into the movie.
To add to that wasn't Eric killing Ursula and protecting Ariel a reason to like him? I mean the sea creatures/merpeople who thought all humans were bad and all that (Including Ariel's father)
It’s a rule that male characters cannot save female characters anymore in film because it “takes away their agency”

in a lot of other renditions ariel is the one to finish off ursula, and honestly, to me, it makes more sense. It's her aunt, she's the one she has the deal with, it's personal and Prince Eric doesn't have any connection to her, so it just feels kinda unsatisfying for him to do it. it would have been nice to see them work together and both be engaged in the fight but it just makes more sense to me for ariel to deliver the final blow

In the original "Under the Sea" the entire song is sung by Sebastian (save for occasional interjections from other fish) and Ariel doesn't say anything because she doesn't agree with the song. The song is essentially just Sebastian nagging her to let go of the human world, it's not her song. She jams out to it a little but she LEAVES the scene before Sebastian is even finished. It makes sense for her character to not really take part in the song, vocal ability be damned. In the new one they force Halle into it because Daveed just can NOT carry the song and he desperately needs her assistance. I like Daveed Diggs, but they sacrificed characterization for a bad casting choice

Honestly by adding Halle's vocals to the performance they make Ariel seem like she has no motive or agency to go to the surface at all, which is crazy considering that's the entire point of the movie's existence.

This is the thing that the average person doesn’t seem to understand about musical theatre: in a musical, the songs are effectively just either monologues or dialogues set to music. Many people (seemingly including the morons who make these “live action” remakes) see musicals as stories where the dialogue is “interrupted” by music. This isn’t true, and it’s frustrating to see the drama of the story be completely thrown out the window when they start singing.
In the entire movie Halle Bailey singing just feels like she’s just trying to show off her singing skills rather than actually put emotion and characterization into the vocals.
The funniest part about this is that LIZZO auditioned for Ursula, she actively pursued the role. An actual singer, who has a great voice that could hit the notes required from this movie…and they went with Melissa McCarthy lol

In the Broadway musical, Eric also had a song, which they clearly tried to top here and failed. The song from the stage version, Her Voice, 1) is gorgeous, and 2) while it doesn't move the plot along a ton, it conveys Eric's confusion and desperation and how he is almost haunted by the voice he heard, which fuels his internal conflict later in the story (where he wants to choose Ariel despite being still drawn to "the voice")
Ariel's added song also sounds like it's trying to compete with "Beyond My Wildest Dreams", which in the musical takes the place of the scene in the og movie with her and Eric in the market (and uses some of the instrumentals from that scene) and is about how excited and grateful and fascinated she is to be on land

This movie made me appreciate just how insanely good Sebastians original voice is. When he gets excited he pulls you in to his emotion. The new one makes me wonder how much he actually cared.

Yes! It makes me appreciate how masterful Disney USED to be with their music. Everything was intentional and made beautiful films.
Have you seen the Little Mermaid stage musical? I work in community theatre and have worked on this musical (as music director). Twice.
1. Eric has a song in the musical, but it’s arguably a better song than the one in this film. It’s called “Her Voice.” Eric actually does a ton of singing in the musical, because they generally cast a guy who can actually sing in musical theatre (generally…) 🙄
2. Ariel does have an “inside her head” song in the musical. It’s called “Beyond My Wildest Dreams.” It’s a better song because the tone isn’t all over the place and the subject matter makes more sense. I didn’t care for “For the First Time,” I thought it had a jumbled message/story. But yeah, there’s quite a lot of “singing inside her head” in the stage musical, so this was not just a choice made for this movie.
3. King Triton sings in the stage musical, and apparently also had a song in this movie but it was cut. Can Javier Bardem even sing?
4. Ursula’s song was pitched up in the stage musical. Why? Because contraltos are hard to come by, but also because the ending high notes are much flashier and more impressive when the key is raised. I also think really bass-y whispering doesn’t translate as well to the stage. Musical theatre is about evoking emotion in the audience, sure, but it’s also about spectacle. Us musical theatre folks in the audience are totally here for the extra riffs, the higher belted notes, etc. I don’t think raising the key hurt the song’s impact.
5. Lin Manuel Miranda needs to keep his hands off Disney classics and just… chill for a while. Little Mermaid didn’t need a rap.
Anyway, I agree with a lot of your criticisms because this is a FILM and not a stage musical. However, I think it’s only fair to direct your criticisms at the right target. A lot of the choices you thought were made for this movie were actually done in the stage musical first, then added to this movie. Sadly, just like with Beauty and the Beast and others, they did not use the extra songs from the musical (which were composed by the same guy and fit the tone of the rest of the show), but they had all new songs written that unfortunately have a more modern and generic style to them and just don’t feel like they belong.

If he was a sort of manipulative 'salesman-type' trying to trick her, we would have probably gotten more blatant clarification of that personality, like with Ursula's 'pathetic' line in her song. Honestly, I think Ariel singing a song in her head after giving up her voice could have been genius if it were better executed. It could have been such a good addition, emphasizing the impact of having lost such a huge part of who she is.
Hell, maybe have it be like a moment of levity in the story.

I don’t know, it’s sort of basic to remove the element that is lost so the audience doesn’t get to experience it either, to help the audience empathize more fully. It’s kind of like when a character dies but comes back as a ghost: they basically don’t die for the audience, so there is no real impact. More effective to a RUIN a song because she can’t sing. So have a duet which would have been awesome if she could sing but she cant so now it sucks. Although then you have a sucky song 😂

No kidding. The original went to so much trouble to handcraft all those bubbles in the ocean scenes, and now in this "live action" POS there's almost no ambient bubbles at all?? Apparently the directors never bothered to look at video footage of the actual ocean, because plenty of sea life releases bubbles - even if just tiny ones. The remake just feels like empty space, an animated green space.

Honestly, even when seeing her in a mocap room on a dude's back bobbing around, the final cut just looks like her whole body was entirely CGI and they slapped her face on it. Because that's effectively what they did. Disney's still high on deepfake, apparently.
I get putting a skullcap on her and rendering the water hair in post, even rendering the tail makes some sense, but why didn't they bother to put her in the actual costume at all? She's in a leotard, meaning that they had to CGI render her skin and body, thus adding to the fakery. She's not even wearing a seashell bra in the film, but a more fabricated top, with the tail. They couldn't at least just make that top for her to wear on the set and save themselves from having to render a CGI double?
I don't blame the artists but the garbage art directors whose vision they created. They made everything dark, CG and nothing looks like it's under water. Everything is colorless, dark and super clear when water is dirty and has all kinds of particles floating around.
It looks like a modern spongebob episode where there's the sound of moving underwater and maybe the ambience of underwater sounds but no bubbles or any sort of current-y motion to signify it

Part of the "warmth" you're talking about between the Sebastian voice actors is that the original voice actor is a baritone, while the new one is a tenor. Obviously there are other factors going into the performance, but that makes a big difference as far as "warmth" goes. They did the same thing in the stage adaptation of Little Mermaid.
The cadence also seems off, in the original he had proper rythm in his voice.
Though tenors also have warmth in their voice, even male altos have warmth in their voices, their voices are naturally lower, darker and warm. Its just most singers aren't trained that well especially tenors and sopranos today.

9:33 you know what's funny about this? In the musical, there was a song that fit this role. It was called "Beyond My Wildest Dreams" and it was sung while Ariel was getting cleaned up by the maids. And I think it was a nice addition (although this might be bias as I was a preformer when my high school preformed it). And the song before that was a Scuttlesong called "Positivity". It took place when Arial washed up on shore. And it was pretty good and fit the movie. I think King Trident got a song in the musical (or at least, singing roles) and the eels got a song too

Y'all remember in the special features for the film version of RENT when one of the actors mentioned how they kept closing their eyes while singing and the directors had to educate them on how to sing with their eyes open because that's necessary for musical theater? Every time I see Halle singing that's all I think about.
Yeah, you can tell Halle is just well versed in cliches. She's not someone who has ever had to develop her own style, let alone learned diverse styles of singing and performance. Just hit every stock beat. Close eyes, waver a note up and down, make pouty face, etc.

It hurts to look at especially having seen the documentary Waking Sleeping Beauty. When they covered The Little Mermaid, you could see so much the animators and Howard Ashman went through to make the film. The fact that Howard Ashman and Glen Keane fought till they were blue in the face to keep Part of Your World in the film is extremely emotional. Seriously I highly recommend the documentary.

I have a four-year-old second cousin and she does not like the live-action remake but she loves the original. She looks more like Halle than the original Ariel but she doesn't like the live-action remake. I have seen other comments of kids not liking the remake which shows that kids aren't fooled and that they know good movies and not shameless remakes
Now this is some really great criticism of the new TLM. When someone says they don’t like the movie or that it’s bad, they are mostly accused of “racism”. Stop using Halle Bailey as a shield to avoid the truth that this live action adaptation is of bad quality. Ariel’s race is the last thing anyone would care about when it comes to this movie. Like where did the 250 mil budget go when the main promo they did for the movie was calling out people for “being racist”?
It’s the last thing any normal person would care about, but if you think nobody cares about her race, well congratulations for going outside and not spending too much time on the internet. Genuinely. But that does not mean they don’t exist.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s a TON to hate about this movie. The race of the main character is not one of them. If the race of the main actress is a problem to you, grow a fucking pair.

They are pretty much saying "We didn't pick these actors because they are the best, just because of their race or skin color", ironically that's even more racist than whatever hater you could find on social media
Another thing, from the design perspective. I always felt that the idea of Vanessa's design (Ursula transformed) was that she looked like Ariel but evil. In that way, Eric could mistake her because of her voice and because he saw her in shadows he could not tell she was a redhead. The new Vanessa looks like the cartoon one. But no one could mistake her for the new Ariel.

Being a black woman, I got called a pick-me for not liking this movie-despite being stoked for it and not wanting to believe that it would end up being a bland mess like the other Disney live action remakes.
That always annoys me how the term “pick-me” is often used against women when the woman in question is not even trying to get attention from guys and is just stating a harmless opinion. What always gets me too is that the people that throw this term around are usually feminists who ironically act incredibly sexist when they accuse women of being a pick-me girl with no basis or solid proof to back it up.
I really want to believe that Hallie was told "do the dovey eyes CONSTANTLY, never stop! And that is how you look like a Disney Princess!", because to me it's so weird how inexpressive she is? Like her face is actually paralyzed some way and considering how flat everything else, I have to believe that was part of the direction more than a choice from her part.

His success in Musical Theater was obviously a fluke. He's, in reality, a hack fraud.
After this video I decided to watch the original Little Mermaid, and my god "Part of your World" is so incredible. There are other Disney films I think are overall stronger, but that song is probably my favorite from the Disney Renaissance, which means of all of Disney's history. The songwriting, the animation, the voice acting just all came together with such perfect harmony, I could honestly gush about it all day. And it's another reason why I have no interest in watching the remake. Just that specific point in the original being done so well makes me never want to see it butchered.

Something about Scuttle's underwater scene actually ruins Triton's motivation later for being mad at Ariel.
Because Scuttle is underwater, Triton had to be mad that Ariel was at a shipwreck instead of meeting a seagull above water. From what I could tell, Triton wasn't really concerned about the sharks she encountered rather than she went to a human-made structure. Later in the film, however, all of Triton's daughters including Ariel were cleaning up a shipwreck! Is he fine with them going to shipwrecks or not?
With Scuttle being above water in the original, it reinforced Ariel's desire to be on land and Triton had a simple but understandable reason to be mad at her.
Also doesn't make much sense for a seagull to be chilling at the bottom of the ocean

Should've casted him as Ariel. At least the movie could then be entertaining if not good.
