I love how some of the clips skip to 3 minutes for damocles proc while other skip to 3 hours. Puts into the perspective how unpredictable this item can be
Honestly if you take this item you're gonna want a Chariot card or a power pill at all times. Then the second you hear that snap you've a split second to activate it or you're dead
The item is a reference to the tale of Damocles, a member of the court of King Dionysus of Syracuse. One day, Damocles was kissing his king's butt, telling him how great and fortunate he was of having so much wealth and power. The king offered Damocles to trade places with him for one day, and Damocles accepted. The thing is, Dionysus was kind of an asshole and had made lots of enemies during his reign. So, in order to remind himself to be always on guard, he had a sword hang over his throne by a horse's hair. So, after a few hours sitting on the throne, Damocles didn't feel so fortunate for all the wealth and power he held.
In the version I heard, the whole thing was more an object lesson on how being a king was not all fun and games, and all the wealth and power in the world didn't protect him from the metaphorical (and in this case, literal) sword hovering just above his head. Hard to enjoy wealth and power with that in mind.
The story behind the sword is interesting, basically Damocles was complementing his king for his fortunate circumstances with his lavish lifestyle and all his power. His king offered to switch places with him for a day so that Damocles could have a taste of that power and lifestyle, Damocles agreed and took to his new throne, surrounded by every luxury he could ever want for however the king also had a sword installed over his throne to represent his many enemies held by just a single horse hair so that it may strike at any time and evoke the same sense of fear and anxiety in him as his many enemies evoke in the king. Damocles then begged his king to take back his power and free him of his "fortunate" circumstance. Damocles is my favorite item from anti-birth, it's such a cool risk reward item and it is amazingly flavorful and true to the story, hence the "A kings fortune but at what cost" sub title.
Considering the chances of 10000:1 after every four frames the chances of dropping on your head after 10 seconds (presumably 30 frames per second) should be around 1-0.9999^(300/4) which is about 0.7%, not *very lucky* all things considered

Finding this as the lost is more items and if possible if tainted lost finds its also good too meaning you have nothing holding you back from getting it holy mantle does not activate
It should be noted that breaking the Holy Mantle does NOT count as being hit, so the item is basically free stuff as The Lost. That said, losing a life and reviving DOES count as taking damage. So it's important to have more than one extra life (i.e. Dead Cat as The Lost is a great combination with this; 1up!, not as much).
So many items in this game have a great concept behind them but nobody will pick them anyway bc the counterpart is bigger than the reward. Only interesting with 2 out of the 34 characters (lost and lost 2). I won't give 2 of my hearts container to play russian roulette in my games no matter how cool this item look.
is it possible for Eden to start with the sword above her head? Or only the active item? If she can I know a certain BOI player whose going to start sweating right about now...
I have to say that the amount of effort you put into this video is amazing. You waited around with the game open for hours just to get a sword to fall to provide physical proof that it does something.
The least and most effort ever put into a video. For one he just has to wait around. But two he can’t play Isaac until he finally finishes all these examples
No one is commenting on this, but I appreciate you adding the description of the item in the title of the video, as people who forget about the name can search the description, which in turn leads to this video. I don't personally do this, but I know a few that do, and they'll thank you for this.
Ok I know holy mantle will not save you from the blade but if you get hit by an enemy with holy mantle and the item's shield per room breaks, does that give Damocles a chance to fall on you or does it not affect it.
One conceivable scenario for it to kill you as The Lost: - Get and use Damocles - Have a 1Up or other single-use resurrection item - Get double-tapped in a room and killed. It's possible that the hit you take while dying would activate the Damocles kill effect. (I have no idea if this is the case.) This scenario may not be applicable to Tainted Lost, as there might not be any resurrection items in Tainted Lost's item pool.
If my theory is correct, there would be a _very_ remote way for Damocles to kill you as Tainted Lost, but it requires using Spindown Dice or other similar item to spawn the resurrection item, _then_ be killed once with Damocles active after taking the rez item. Someday, _someone_ will surely trigger this sequence of events, but you'd almost have to be _trying_ to do it.
And from chests, the item has a high chance of killing you in under an hour, it should st least affect chests, since you get s lot of those in Chest and Dark Room so if it affected you'd get to make really good use of the item.
Something else I don't think was covered: Although holy mantle doesn't save you from when the sword FALLS, it DOES save you from activating the sword for the first time. In short, this means taking Damocles at Lost or Tainted Lost has no downsides, as they have no conditions where they could realistically trigger the sword to begin with.
This is unbelievably powerful for early game when enemies aren't that hard, but also potentially dangerous if you don't recognize when it's going to fall and act appropriately. Having an extra life or invincibility available is important, and later on when you think you have enough items, getting rid of it is vital to your survival because it's harder to dodge attacks, increasing the chance of getting insta-killed. I think panic button and the holy barrier should prevent you from dying to this, it seems like an oversight more than anything.

isaac gets hit and instantly speaks as if he were talking through a shitty microphone as he speedruns to get anything that would help him survive

I really appreciate the fact that even tho is high risk high reward, if u get it as blind item, u can just not press the spacebar, it's really good
I just realized this is the knife that hung over isaac in the anti-birth album cover thing
Does losing holy mantle count as damage for causing the sword to drop
So many items in this game have a great concept behind them but nobody will pick them anyway bc the counterpart is bigger than the reward. Only interesting with 2 out of the 34 characters (lost and lost 2). I won't give 2 of my hearts container to play russian roulette in my games no matter how cool this item look.
is it possible for Eden to start with the sword above her head?
Or only the active item?
If she can I know a certain BOI player whose going to start sweating right about now...
Does Isaac's Heart save you from dying?
To be fair, 1 hour and 20 minutes before the death effect activates is pretty sick
I think that with The Lost/Tainted Lost this may be a free item, because in Antibirth, if I recall, it'd pass through your body once it fell on you
It can’t proc on them anyway since they die if they take any hit.
@@Napstablooky holy mantle
@@potatoking2161 Holy mantle doesn't count as getting hit for Damocles, same as Holy Card
It's free on Lost/Tainted Lost anyway because they can't take a hit to begin with, thus never proccing the chance for Damocles to fall anyway.
So it was some 1/10000 chances huh...
Guess im just that unlucky to immediately die after leaving the room where i got my first hit
Craft this item + some kind of extra life on tainted cain, use diplopia = Profit🙃
So it's actually the definition of high risk, high reward
Sorry if you said it in the vid or not, but if you get hit and you leave the floor before it falls on you does it reset it?
So even if you don't take damage there's a chance to kill you?
So if you drop it with butter and then activate it again, will it still have the chance to fall before taking further damage?
I will test this :D
I have to say that the amount of effort you put into this video is amazing. You waited around with the game open for hours just to get a sword to fall to provide physical proof that it does something.
The least and most effort ever put into a video. For one he just has to wait around. But two he can’t play Isaac until he finally finishes all these examples
4:05 Panic button wont activate how to jump if isaac is not moving therefore this test proves nothing.
True
oh i will check part again :D
lmao, butter is-
b-b-b-b-BASED?!
I've got more items...
But at what cost...
Everybody gangster till the metronome gives damocles
WHY.
IS.
IT.
A.

UNLOCK.
i dont have the item unlocked yet, but i can guarantee this will be the most anxiety inducing thing in my life
gnawed leaf is the superior item
No one is commenting on this, but I appreciate you adding the description of the item in the title of the video, as people who forget about the name can search the description, which in turn leads to this video. I don't personally do this, but I know a few that do, and they'll thank you for this.
I thought the wiki said the sword overall becomes more likely to fall the more times isaac is hit
Also wow a reason to rush even after blue womb
Ok I know holy mantle will not save you from the blade but if you get hit by an enemy with holy mantle and the item's shield per room breaks, does that give Damocles a chance to fall on you or does it not affect it.
Holy mantle dont count as damage for the game system, so it dont trigger.
OH IT'S BACK
Good thing both the Lost and the Tainted Lost can get Damocles. Free extra items for them with that activated.
Honestly, this is a really good item for both lost and tainted lost as it would never kill you. Unless it does, but I'm not sure how.
One conceivable scenario for it to kill you as The Lost:
- Get and use Damocles
- Have a 1Up or other single-use resurrection item
- Get double-tapped in a room and killed.
It's possible that the hit you take while dying would activate the Damocles kill effect. (I have no idea if this is the case.)
This scenario may not be applicable to Tainted Lost, as there might not be any resurrection items in Tainted Lost's item pool.
Honestly, it should give you an twice the deals and twice the shop items.
And from chests, the item has a high chance of killing you in under an hour, it should st least affect chests, since you get s lot of those in Chest and Dark Room so if it affected you'd get to make really good use of the item.
Finally an explanation on the item that kept killing me on the Delete This challenge.
Can tainted lost get this item
Is there ANY changes between Antibirth and this version?
No doubling pay-for pedestals (like in the shop or devil deal) but it won't increase the chance of killing you every consecutive hit
"Stand tall rise up stay strong fighting your enemies
Truth will find its reward
If you live and die by the sword"
Something else I don't think was covered:
Although holy mantle doesn't save you from when the sword FALLS, it DOES save you from activating the sword for the first time. In short, this means taking Damocles at Lost or Tainted Lost has no downsides, as they have no conditions where they could realistically trigger the sword to begin with.
If you go to the death certificate room, can you pick more than one item?
Just don't get hit lol
yo sync any chance you can show what happens when u use chaos card on dogma and the beast?
This is unbelievably powerful for early game when enemies aren't that hard, but also potentially dangerous if you don't recognize when it's going to fall and act appropriately.
Having an extra life or invincibility available is important, and later on when you think you have enough items, getting rid of it is vital to your survival because it's harder to dodge attacks, increasing the chance of getting insta-killed.
I think panic button and the holy barrier should prevent you from dying to this, it seems like an oversight more than anything.
"Hear that? We have options!"
If anxiety were an item
What r those gold thingy rocks?
Wanna know too
Give money when destroyed. I think it's an unlock for either The Keeper or Tainted Keeper.

this man has some Lets Game it Out level perseverance
The way there's a second delay when the sword goes to fall makes me think you can just walk from underneath it and dodge it in time
Maybe you can react to it with a chariot card or something
"Hey, I've seen this one before."
Yet another item I’m too bad at the game to get, but think is really cool and want
