I personally witnessed Anna Akana, this fantastic human being, speak one on one with fans during a meet and greet. One of whom wanted advice about how to talk to their significant other struggling with suicidal thoughts, and another having thoughts themselves. The time, attention, wisdom, and care this QUEEN gave them all was beyond touching. It was as if each one was the only other person in the room with her for as long as they wanted to speak with her. This woman really walks the walk.

On brand yes, but the brand (well company) and the safety of those using it are the issues. The US regulator (the FTC) alleged (the company then settled in 2023 with the FTC for $7.8m, you can read about this in ether parties website) data about the users were passed on for marketing (inc Facebook) despite claimed they did not. The impact being potentially vulnerable (and prehpas susceptible or desperate) individuals being marketed to at best and at worst (theoretically) access to credit, insurance and by extension medical coverage. In another instance the HIPAA logo was used (a medical standard in the US) dispute no certification meaning it was effectively “marking its own homework”. The concept of easer access (or simplay more accessible) to talking therapy in different and flexible forms with the use of technology is good. However, just like “gig” platforms where you can rent a room etc, much of this results in the market placing more diligence on the consumer in a space with sometimes both questionable over-site and mixed quality. Whenever money meets medical, vested interests risk favouring the business side. In this case the desire for growth outstripped the need for responsibility. A further question might be when dose enough change to justify a change in public opinion in a brand?

As someone who HIGHLY suspects they have an undiagnosed mental illness, I would like to suggest meditation. While I am not an expert in it, it helps you to find peace for a while and really helps you to work out the thoughts in you’re head. Also maybe try an acting class, even for non-actors it can help you work out you’re emotions and thoughts and provide relief, distraction and sometimes is pretty cathartic. But before doing any of this, talk to a licensed mental health professional. Believe me, when I move out I am definitely making that a priority.

I can attest to the fact that suicidal ideation isn't necessarily indicative of mental illness. I went through cancer treatment recently and immunotherapy left me type one diabetic for the rest of my life. Treatment saved my life, but at the same time gave me a disease that carries with it a higher risk of suicide due to the amount of pressure put on the patient to self monitor and care.
During treatment and even after, the only thing that stopped me was knowing how devastated my mum would be. She was with me through everything and I couldn't do that to her. But if she hadn't been, I'm not sure I'd still be here.

  • @namehere5675
    @namehere5675 3 месяца назад +29

First off, she is quite right about talking about it helping. Similar to anxiety and other issues of the mind, talking about suicidal ideation helps lower the likelihood of someone acting on it. It helps get it out of the mind, if only for a little while. It helps a lot!
Second, don't judge a person for suicidal ideation. They will just close themselves off from you. Don't feed into the stigma, it doesn't help anyone. A person doesn't commit suicide because they are weak, they do it because they don't see a way out and are tired of trying. Or, they feel such strong negative emotions that they override a person's sense of self preservation.
When I was dealing with panic attacks, talking to someone helped me. Whenever I talked to someone about my suicidal ideation I felt less inclined toward letting it sink in further. Please listen, let the person know you love and value them, and help as much as you can. Helping can just be encouraging them to seek the help of a mental health professional if you are busy. Check in when you are able.

I’m 51, I’ve had suicidal ideation since I was 15, along with Borderline Personality Disorder. I’ve learned a lot of different ways to deal with the feelings that have helped get those feelings I have off my mind or just let them out. I used to write letters to whoever telling them what’s going on in my head. Then burn them so no one else would see them. The other two are taking a long walk, as a teen I’d walk miles and by the time I got to a predetermined destination or one giant circle back to home. I felt so much better and less anxious. As a lazy adult lol, I find taking long drives helps me get out of my head. Having to concentrate on the traffic and road ahead is almost like meditation for me. But I can do it after midnight when almost no one’s around. A few times I unintentionally drove 300 miles round trip in a night.

What helped me was realizing how much power I have to change my thoughts, behaviors, and community but the hardest part was realizing I am the only one who can act and work on these things myself. I felt like I had no one and kept looking at the laundry list of things that were wrong when in reality I had a lot of things that were just fine as well (access to internet, food, clean environment). My parents came from some of the worst backgrounds and childhoods imaginable which left them and me with a negative mindset, but I over came it. It’s not life that you want to end, but the negativity and pain. There are other amazing things and feelings in life, I promise. The sooner you start talking about the thoughts and letting them out of your head and into paper, art, music, conversations, things will shift. Don’t focus on feeling happy all the time but being content and learn how to feel things but also let them go. It takes work, but it’s worth it. ❤ If you want to help someone, listen non-judge-mentally, cook for them, bring groceries, go on walks with them, cry together, etc.

Sadly...I've seen passive suicide a lot of times and they see only the bad part in life. They see that everything is hard. They'd rather not wake up in the morning 'cause not a lot brings them joy. Everything you want requires hard work. And that is true. I, too, fell into depression because of this. Their reasons why life is hard and meaningless are logical. It's not always some pity party saying just: I am scared or ugly, and that's why I can't do anything, or whatever. Sometimes, they are realistically like: I have these many chances realistically with where I am from, how I am, etc, and to work for my goal blindly I'll have to enjoy my life less, change, etc. Which is horribly hard. Especially when the outcome is not guaranteed.
As someone who is no longer thinking about it...all that helped me was to keep trying. Not let myself down. And to face the facts. I might not get what I want. I might never actually rest in the true sense of the word. I might suffer until I am no longer here but...I choose to do it for me. I choose to be here for me and see it through for me and it might fail, but I will not fail myself.
And that's as close to self-love I ever got, and it keeps me alive.
Also, what you said in your book: You're going to die anyway...why hurry?

Be open to, and accept, that it's perfectly common and normal to have to try more than one therapist before you find one that really clicks with you. We are each our own unique collection of experiences and body chemistry, that it's only natural that no therapist is going to be best equipped to handle EVERY case. Usually when a man is suicidal, he doesn't tell anyone and hides it well and attempts it. Only after they survive an attempt, can you talk to them about suicide. The times in my life I really felt suicidal, I hid it so well that when I finally told my doctor and family they were suprised that I was suicidal for years and considered doing something about it several times.
Women who wear their emotions on their sleeves are much more likely for people to notice they are actually suicidal. Cutting, vomitting, not eating is a call for attention and can be seen as an early warning sign, but they haven't quite reached the point where they are learning how to make a noose, or finding a knife and figuring out the best way to stab yourself with it to hit an artery, or figuring out the locked safe code to get the gun.
There isn't usually resources available for men to discuss suicide and a lot of other men have so much on their plate that someone suicidal doesn't want to make it harder for them, by bringing it up. Women have all the resources in the world and people are so willing to talk to them, that I don't see why there should be any women commiting suicide. Men totally makes sense though.

I feel like no one wants to hear about suicidal thoughts. Your loved ones will be shocked and your therapist/psychiatrist will easily send you to the mental ward. So I keep it to myself. I hope I can at least be a good support if someone opens up to me ❤ I wish I had the courage to talk to sb

I usually open up about it if someone else does too. If somehow that subject is reached by any means and they're like: I get it, I've been there..or something, I open up too. I test the waters before diving in. Or even if I just open it up by talking about someone else online, a show, or anything and see their opinion on it.

Um they would only send you to a mental ward/inpatient if they really felt it was that bad bc a lot of ppl don't even have ppl that could support and stay with them. Also sometimes ppl will voluntarily admit themselves for their own health.

it is difficult for "thoughts" to dissipate when they're rooted into the reality of the world we live in hm.
Will global warming dissipate? Will genocides and wars dissipate? Will fascism dissipate? Will hate dissipate?.. I probably could go on :x
I'm more likely to dissipate first 🙃 Let it just not hurt.

I've seen a number of people talk about how they we're blindsided by a loved one or best friend taking their life without warning. At least to them. Was any information provided with seeing subtler signs, or is it the best option just to make it clear to them that you are someone they can turn to?

Talking to someone about suicide, who is suicidal, is a huge responsibility and commitment. It's hard to know how far along they are. They might not even know. So it's hard to tell if they're not talking about it because of how close they are to it, or if they are talking about it because they're so close. You have to have a great deal of empathy, and must be there with them fully in the moment. I was suicidal twice. And I've never known anyone (before, during, or after that time) who could possibly have reached me. But I also never trusted anyone during that time, enough to tell them, anyway. Even my closest friends, when I mentioned something about it, told me that I just wanted attention. Saying the wrong thing could send them over the edge, or save them, or have no effect. If you get them talking, be prepared for hours of them talking, and you listening. Asking things like, "Do you want to hurt yourself" or "Have you thought about hurting yourself" could also result in sending them over the edge, or saving them, or having no effect. You just don't know. I've had trained professions totally blow it with me. There is no magic cure, or mix of the right words. Only listening while they talk may hurt them or help them, as could delivering a frank speech to them, or sharing the conversation equally. You just don't know.

I'll be honest though, some of these questions can actually trigger the thoughts in someone who had never thought about offing themselves.
It's what happened to me, I got accused of having these thoughts, accused of harming myself, I had never done that to that extend or length.
It can plant a seed in someone who's hanging on mentally and kick them off the edge.
I'm so lucky that my will to live is stronger then 5+ different types of thoughts on a daily basis for 4+ years caused by people like that.
I now only really get them when I get sick or suffer heavy pms because thats when physically and mentally I get to a low point.

    2 adds:
    1. When people gifting away huge stuff or most they own, this is also a huge sign.
    2. Also, people who are calm are NOT excluded from being suicidal. Some people can come over as extremely calm because they have made their decision. Do not mistake this for them not being suicidal anymore.

suicidal thoughts and the like are symptoms of severe overwhelm and emotional pain in a person. much like how people jumping from buildings during 9/11 weren't doing it to end their lives, but to escape the pain of the fire, it's the less painful of two options. especially in the modern day where we are so prone to self-isolating, fear of burdening others, push down feelings thru distractions like screens etc. sometimes it just kinda... jumps up. ur pain and feelings are real though, even if u don't have a concrete explanation as to WHY you're feeling that way. doesn't mean it's not incredibly real or valid to your experience.

I dont want to be mean but if you take away means of easily killing yourself and you have stats on that do you also have stats on when they do kill themselves and you took away the means if their suicide are even more violent. Because if i was to kill myself i would try something painless like heroine; if you take that away i will think of a train track or a bridge... Im just asking hard questions.

    • @mesha514
      @mesha514 3 месяца назад

are you going to take away the trains and the bridges... I'm not suicidale right now anyway i'm not allowed to talk about it because in my province of quebec if i did feel suicidal it would lead to torture in a hospitale and im not playing around the way we treat mental issues in my country is torture. ive seen it and all the propaganda in the world saying they heal people over there is bs. Thats not how you heal depression and it is TORTURE what they do here.
i know and it never is healing.
And now theres are new laws in place thar oblige people calling services if anyone talks to them about suicide. so we are not able to express ourselves here anymore.
Anyway in Quebec nobody cares. i cant speak for elsewhere on the globe
and to tell you the truth i would be better off dead... not for the others but for myself. it would be a better life to be dead.
Im very happy i have had no kids on this planete. I would not have done that to somebody.
