You have literally changed my life! My family tried teaching me to crochet but became frustrated since I was left handed.. well between your techniques and some lefty tutorials I’m making my first shawl!
Thanks Jayda - I piggybacked the BonBon yarn with another acrylic yarn and made a lovely, sparkly headband. Now I'm going to try something a little larger LOL.
Thank you thank you... Been Knitting and crocheting for many years and didn't know all that about yarns.....glad to know I have been doing in right. I enjoy channel .
Your videos have really helped me love to crochet again❤️ I was taught by my mamaw while I was young and I stopped when she passed away. I am loving it again and am making blankets for my family for Christmas.
Hi Crystal! That's so wonderful :) So many of us have crochet and knitting memories tied to our grandmothers (and in my case, great grandmothers!) It's such a wonderful feeling to be able to make things for the people we love too!
Thank You so much for this tutorial. I’m just starting to crochet again. I learned as a child, but I honestly never know what to buy for a particular project.
I am super happy I found your channel. I am a novice crocheter and adore your channel and enjoy following along with every fiber craft. I still can not read crochet patterns and could not really find a video that explains how the patterns are worked. This is something I would love to be able to do since I am on the hunt for vintage 1940s-1960s crochet patterns.
+VeganVintageGeek Hi! If you're still getting your footing with reading patterns, I can help you get started :) I have several free patterns up on my website (www.jaydainstitches.com) and most of them have video tutorials that go with them, so you can follow along with the pattern while you watch the video and the language and flow of the patterns will start to make more sense. Having said that, everyone writes patterns a little differently and this changes with the general lexicon - older vintage patterns often use slightly different language and I've also noticed that they assume the reader knows a lot about crocheting and there can be big gaps in directions! However, once you get into the groove of crochet and reading the short hand, you'll have an easier time navigating the older stuff :) Have fun!
Thanks so much after all these years I been the lazy one.... I just grabbed the first yard I see because it was pretty with out reading the label and get home and hated that I bought it... .because of the way it looked for now on I will read my labels and know what I'm buying.
Hi Lisa! I do the same thing LOL, If you've got lots of balls of yarn you don't know what to do with, you can try our Scrap-Busting Blanket tutorial :) You can use whatever yarn you have, regardless of size, type, colour... :) You can find it on our channel homepage, just click on my name to take you there!
I was so sad when I made the association that acrylic and polyester are oil industry products. It will never biodegrade and it contributes to the micro plastic issue that's quickly developing in our water supply. I'm trying to deal with only natural fibers again.
Thanks so much for explain everything so clear! Love all your videos! I learned so much from your channel and website! Thank You for sharing your talents and skills!
Thank you for this video! It was very informative. I'm new to knitting and still learning what materials work with certain projects. This has helped tons!
Jada I think you are so awesome, I am a kinda new crocheter and i went to your website an you have done a wonderful job , it was really helpful. I would like to make a youtube channel with crochet im trying to figure it out , but i love your channel keep up the good work and have a wonderful week :).
Very thorough! And best video in you tube for explaining yarns 👌🏼 Thanks 🌺 I would suggest maybe using written visuals for your videos since there is so much info it helps break it down mentally for visual learners like me. Look forward to the cheat sheet.
+picocita Aldi-fer There is SO much info! That's why we made the cheat sheet :) It's got a lot more information in it than I had time to cover in this video, you can get a copy on our website at www.jaydainstitches.com :) Thank you so much for watching!
There is superwash wool out there that you can machine wash without felting it! There is also lots of yarn out there that is not scratchy. Merino yarn is beautifully soft and cozy. I make a lot of baby items out of that soft superwash wool and haven't had any complaints. I don't see a lot of nice wool out there at big box stories, but craft stores, local yarn shops, and online retailers like Knitpicks have loads of beautiful soft fluffy stuff. I like synthetics and cottons, but I feel like wool gets a bad rap when there is nice wool out there.
Hi Saibu, we have a quick tip playlist you can check out if you haven't already :) You'll likely find that card inside this video (just wave your mouse over the video as it plays on the upper right hand side and click on the little circle with the "i" in it)
The other yarn I chose was a deep maroon sock yarn. The BonBon yarn was a deep brown with gold flecks. I have darkish brown hair. Now when I wear it, it looks like a golden aura is holding back my hair LOL.
Jasmine LoveFlower1 year agoLMAO!! Just dont wear them in the kitchen and that evil laugh she does after she says that had me choking lol.HIYA!incidently noted her rather weird laugh, too
do you have a tutorial on the chibis? if you dont, can you write up a free pattern? (i'm a kid, so I can't buy stuff) Thanks for your tutorials because I love to crochet! thanks also for the answer on the Afghan question!
Hi jayda! First thank you for these explanations on yarn. It's so helpful. My question is on acrylic yarn is there a way you suggest to soften it? I know I can buy softer acrylic but it's usually a little more expensive.
Hi Roze, yes! You can gently hand wash (by gently squeezing) your skein in a sink full of cool water with just a little dab of hair conditioner. Then rinse it well and let the skein full air dry before you use it.
HI Stephanie, if the pillow is going to get a lot of use, then you want a sturdy non-pilling yarn (wool, wool blends, polyester and mercerized cotton are great). If it's decorative and not likely to be used much, then just about any yarn you like will do 😊
Good Morning Jayda - I got all excited about BonBon yarn and purchased 2 packages from Amazon on line. On the day it came I whooped and cheered until I tried to crochet with it. I have arthritis in my hands and it is SO fine that I can't seem to make it work. In addition I got the "party pack" which has a metallic fiber running through it. So, my question is, can I piggyback it with another acrylic yarn? I don't mind hand washing so the metallic fiber won't be a problem. I've tried using a little teeny tiny hook (2.0, 2.5) and my stitches still look awful! I'm not a beginner but this yarn is making me feel like one. Your thoughts would be welcomed. It is eating my lunch! Jace
Hi Jace! You can definitely piggyback that bon bon yarn with an acrylic yarn of a larger size. Working with tiny hooks and thin yarn is a challenge for a lot of body parts LOL Fingers, eyes, shoulder muscles. ..
Jayda I want to try to crochet a shirt for the summer. My question is...cotton vs acrylic and which size of yarn? #2 or #3?. I think #4 is more for cold days. Which you suggest? Cotton or acrylic and #2 or #3?
Hi Venus! I hope you got our answer on Instagram, but just in case... Cotton all the way! It's cooler, it breaths and it washes well too :) I would recommend working up a sample in the yarn weight you're interested in trying to get a feel for the look and thickness of the fabric :)
@@JaydaInStitches yes love i did got your Instagram message and I replied. I gave you also the reason why I started to crochet. When you have a min read it. Is inspirational and all thanks to you. By the way I have two pages. This one is vegavenus70 but the one I replied And I'm following through is vegavenus1970. Hope you can read my message hun.
Hi Virginia, yarn generally says on the label what the fiber content is, and if it's mixed. If Cotton is in the title of the yarn, my guess is that it's 100% cotton or very close too :)
Hi Jayda, thank you for this, it's so helpful! All your videos are, please know how much we appreciate them and you! I have a request/question(and perhaps you've talked about this and will direct me to a link) -- can you help with how to work with fingering & DK yarns? I don't want to make socks but love this weight for other projects like sweaters & shawls. Its tends to split on me :( and it's a bear to frog (it doesn't always go back to the original shape...). Any tips would be appreciated. Thank you!
Hi Jill! Thank you for watching :) Yarns all seem to vary greatly in their tightness of spin, number of ply, thickness, fragility etc. As such, I try not to treat yarns the same way. Whenever I start into a new project with a new kind of yarn, I always allow for a learning period. I work up a little sampler with the new yarn (and hook, if it's a size I don't typically use). You have to allow your fingers to get used to the new sizes, textures and weight :) After a little sampling or experimentation, I usually feel better equipped to get into my project :) I hope that helps!
I read through the comments to try and not ask something that had been already asked so if this has been asked already, I'm sorry. you said cotton is very washable, does that mean that cotton can go in the washer and dryer like acrylic yarn can?
+Jennifer Rogers Hi Jennifer, in general, yes! Always read the label (if you have them) for your yarn, but most crochet and knit cotton yarn is super durable and washes well. I would recommend cool wash and low heat dry. Cotton doesn't always shrink, but nearly anything will if you apply enough heat! Thank you for watching :)
Also, with the wool, if you use it for a gift, the person who revives it might not know the care of wool and might accidentally wash it so don't use it for gifts.
+caitlin in stiches crochet Hi Caitlin! (how's it going on the other side of the big pond?!) Yes, you sure can! In fact, you can crochet with long 'threads' of ANYTHING. Strips of fabric, hemp string, embroidery floss, plastic bags, t-shirts...sort of makes your brain explode with possibilities, doesn't it?! Plastic 'yarn' can be pretty tough, so if you're going to give it a whirl, try something like a small basket. The added cool factor of plastic yarn is that it's water proof...so you can use it for stuff outside!
Hi Jane, nylon yarn is good for slippers and rugs and anything that takes a lot of wear and tear! I would treat it like acrylic though, because it can melt if it comes into contact with too much heat!
@jaydainstitches great info. I would only add that if your vegan any wool, angora, alpaca and silk aren't vegan. As far as a "haircut", it's not that pretty in the majority of sheep farms. Most of the men shearing are not trained and cut off odd parts and sew wounds they create without anesthesia. Animal cruelty is happening everyday all day. #govegan Choose bamboo, cotton or arcylic. #bekind
+Jayda InStitches I've been vegetarian since 2008 and just realised how dairy and egg consumption is just as violent as the meat industry. I too thought wool was collected by responsible people but sadly it seems our planet is full of people lacking a whole lot of responsibility and humanity. I've made the conscious choice of using cotton, bamboo or acrylic. I'm sure even acrylic is probably not the best for.the eco system either. Ty +JaydaInStitches for being so sweet. 🇭🇺🇬🇸
