Why does my face look wide you might say? Its a couple things... First, I'm using an 85mm lens here. Usually I use a 18mm or 35mm prime. So lens compression is doing it's thing. Secondly, the anamorphic adapter I used (Sankor 16 essentially) has high distortion. Things in the middle are wider than the edges when close to camera (in my case, about 5 feet). Just take a look at the computer in the background. Looks thinner than usual. So if you're going to use this lens, you might want to reduce the stretch to correct objects close to camera. Just keep in mind your edges (like the computer in the background of my set) will get very thin.
Caleb, there is good and bad stuff (you generally have great quality). The bad thing is, which you would now if you were part of the group, is that the anamorphic store is a complete rip-off. Also people don't trust vid-atlantic, they have cost some people there scopes by breaking. Best way to as for now is rapido in terms of price/value. Slr magic is simple, but lacks in quality. Better to get the rapido.
The squeeze ratio changes when doing the so called "double focusing". I can imagine that you didn't use your variable diopter. And even if you did: some scopes have not exactly 2x squeeze ratios. Also a lot of smaller anamorphic projection lenses tend to compress more at the sides. Another fact why the computer is looking thinner is not only the the slight overcompression caused by your scope but also the fact that vertical "oval" bokeh makes everything out of focus seem more thin. That's also one of many many reasons why it's preferred by professional DoP's if you look at it from a artistic view. You really rushed this video for no reason since there are some misinformations and also a bad promotion to a person who is selling really bad products for ridiculously high prices on Ebay. Instead of promoting him you could have promote Rectilux from the UK. Also as I mentioned somewhere else: You should have joined the FaceBook-Group "Anamorphic Shooters" and dig through the posts there and eventually come in contact with some really talented and informative people who would have loved to help you out with gear and product recommendations. Next time don't let anyone push you to do anything. Do your research properly and bring stuff out when you are ready for it. You are doing such a great job otherwise but this is a step into the wrong direction by trying to put out content as fast as possible (not saying that you didn't invest time into this one, it just wasn't enough specifically regarding this topic).
Hey, I made a video where I used the moondog labs anamorphic adapter on may GH5. It was made for smartphones but it has a 37mm thread so I can mount it on my Olympus 14-42mm and 45mm. Here is the link if you find the time ruclips.net/video/rIQDN4qM32A/видео.html
You should join the anamorphic shooters group on Facebook. Happy to welcome you there, most professional people are in this group. I am selling a new kowa b&h soon but unfortunately they are on the expensive side/above 1500$
I’ve bought every anamorphic my man Tito recommended. Love that guy, so I was glad to see another RUclipsr I love doing anamorphic videos. Great stuff!
Once I got past the flares and the distortion of your face, it's the tonality that this old lens brings that I really liked, even more than the bokeh/blur and the flares. I've heard cinematographers say that different lenses today are like what using different film stock was like, and I really like the character of the tonality that this lens brings to the image.
Caleb, you're the one of the best RUclips teacher for Video. So clear explanations, with clean and "licked" images and light setup. Once again thanks and congrats for your tutos.
Just a point: you can shoot 2x anamorphic just fine on 16:9 sensors. You simply use the 4:3 area at the center of those sensors by cropping or zooming. In turn you loose a bit of resolution. Many cameras, like the BM Ursa Mini are like that.
This is by far the most detailed explanation on basics of low budget anamorphic. Great job bro. Would love to see a series explaining this more detailed on how to properly achieve quality true anamorphic in a low budget. Can't wait for more!
Caleb! This video is killer! I dove down the anamorphic rabbit hole about 3-6 months ago and basically came to the conclusion that it was just too complex for the little bits of pay-off I got. This video would be super handy to someone like me a few months ago who is just trying to get the hang of why someone cares about anamorphic and how a basic set up might look. You've got me tempted by those SLR Magic adaptors haha. Thanks again for all the time and effort you put into this channel!
Great video CP! Been trying to look at affordable anamorphic options for a while and your video just cleared up everything I was looking to research, so thank you for the in-depth review!
I've been following you for years now, I love how you condensed so much information well and into one single video to get people up and running. One thing that I think you missed, and I could be wrong, is that if you've learned a lot from Tito's videos then it would have been appropriate to give his channel a shout-out. The man has put so much energy into what he does and with your pull, it would have been placed well. Maybe I'm wrong but if not, maybe show some support for everything he's helped with. Love your channel regardless and I'm always sharing it with younger videographers just getting into the game.
I've had the pleasure of working with anamorphic. There is just something about them that makes footage... Special. BTW, this might be your most fabulous looking video yet!
To everyone obsessing about the lens flares... If that’s all you want out of Anamorphic then you can easily recreated that in post with something like Video Copilot’s Optical Flares. They look just as good imo as the flares you’ll get from cheap anamorphic adapters and you’ll have much more control over the final image. The real reason to use anamorphic lenses imo is to get a nice wide field of view with longer lenses and of course as Caleb said that dreamlike oval bokeh that is the defining characteristic of anamorphic. You don’t get that with the 1.33 adapters which makes them (again imo) a giant waste of money.
This doesn't look quite right... Edit: looking forward to the follow-up vid where you address your settings and properly desqueeze. You probably overlooked something tiny.. 😅
"Going to watch the first couple minutes of this video to see if it is what I'm looking for." -21 min later... good job man. Very informative about all the different adapters I've been looking at.
I bought the Moment anamorphic lens and since then I've been obsessed with the anamorphic look. Particularly the aspect ratio and distortion. Thank you for making this video. Not a whole lot out there on anamorphic for your SLR.
I don't know where you are based out of but I would love to talk and learn from you. I literally think film all day and night. I drive a truck over the road for a living and film every chance I get. I love the art of taking footage and turning it into something that captures people's attention and makes them think and use their head/imagination to create the feelings they feel.
This was super cool to see. I feel like most youtubers are always focused on consumer level gear so this was truly different and I learned a lot. Love seeing into a bit of the cinema world.
Amazing video! But I think you have oversqueezed your footage, making your head wider than it should be. A lot of these adapters will advertise a squeeze ratio (like 2x) but that will only be at infinity focus and for closer focus it might only be something like 1.8x or even 1.7x. So for anyone reading this, don’t just blindly follow numbers, use your eyes, look at your footage and evaluate it :) If it looks right, it is right, no matter what the numbers say :)
YES MORE ANAMORPHIC VIDEOS PLEASE, I shoot on an a6500 and would love to have a cinema set up like this! But sadly because all this is pretty expensive it may be a while until I can do this lol
Really, really awesome review, thank you! It's been a near-to-perfect overview of all the different choices for shooting anamorphic, really helped me out!
Awesome video! Very informative, looking forward to more info on anamorphics! Considering to start filming with them in the future, so this was very helpful. Thanks!
PLEASE do an anmorphic series/guide. It's the perfect topic, that while talked about, not many go in depth or talk about the best products, monitors, etc. To use when shooting anamophic. Thank you so much for your work
The squeeze ratio of the Sankor 16C is said to be 2X which would produce 2.66:1 in post and slight crop neede, but I have measured my lens to squeeze closer to 1.8X or between 180-185% horizontal FOV in reality, making it quite ideal for the GH5's 4:3 anamorphic mode and 2.37:1 and "5K2K" project template in FCPX.
What a great video. I had no idea what anamorphic was when I saw it in camera settings. I love your video quality too. I saw your video on the BMPCC4K too. I'm probably going to get it after the Blackmagic Raw. Its pretty beastly
Great video, best overall intro and guide video I have seen on anamorphic and I have been doing a lot of research. A more in depth guide or series would be great too. I reached your same conclusions about the slr magic, thanks for demystifying the projection lenses, nobody else has really done that.
Thing is I was thinking this might be another addition to my setup "I shoot instagram car videos" but this is pretty much impossible to carry or use with a gimbal, great informational video tho really enjoyed it!!
Awesome video for something I have been looking for, but would like a more detailed video. Especially for the X-T3. Please and thank you for all you do!

Yes! I would love a full guide on this. I'm a gh5 and canon eos-r shooter. Hello Caleb,
Do You know if you can shoot on the sony a7iii in 4:3? I can't find anyrhing in the Internet? Would be very helpfull, thanks.
Thanks for this video. Please give us more and make more videos about anamorphic, i would love to see a nice setup for the sony a7iii.

Definitely stretched too far wide :(
Nah, it's perfect! The widest boi in the neighborhood xD
1.8x stretch would be better probably :)
I agree it's overstretched. I'm sure it could be de-squeezed better. Also anamorphic is not meant for 16:9.
It's not stretched. That's just how he looks. If you see iris of his eyes they are perfectly round. Also see that equilateral square aperture at 11:00
Check my pinned comment :-) Its actually "correct" but the lens is pretty heavy on the distortion front.
Yesss please do more anamorphic videos! Loved this one, great work Caleb!
Did you ever buy one of these anamorphic lenses, Daniel?
Hello daniel
This was a great video, I want to get into Anamorphic for some of my future projects.
You should! I love seeing you try out new stuff and including things you've learned in your videos

@@seifenhasedreizehn4077 I'm already in that group with my real name. But thx for inviting
Back to GH5? ;) You're gonna want that 4:3 aspect ratio.
I’m so glad you made this. It’s such a huge barrier to entry to get anamorphic look
Thanks Tyler! Definitely a pain to get right. Heck, I misaligned most of my shots in this video anyway ha!
I’ve bought every anamorphic my man Tito recommended. Love that guy, so I was glad to see another RUclipsr I love doing anamorphic videos. Great stuff!

Of course we want more Caleb! Super interesting topic!
My 21:9 ultrawide monitor LOVES this!
SAME - finally some footage that I can see edge to edge lol
Yes mine too! #BANBLACKBARS
CRTVs hate them but it's legal.
fuck yeah, it does!
My iPad Pro too jk
In today's video we're going to build a rocket (cough) I mean anamorphic lens
5 staged stack!
Amazing! The best intro video to Anamorphic work by far. You have a true gift of teaching things.
This is by far the most detailed explanation on basics of low budget anamorphic. Great job bro. Would love to see a series explaining this more detailed on how to properly achieve quality true anamorphic in a low budget. Can't wait for more!

For most phones especially Samsungs on a 21:9 display this video looks perfect. Only movies and Netflix have video that's made for my phone.
That's right! Look perfect on a pixel 3. No need to zoom in!
I have been searching for a long time for more information about this topic. Great Video, i would like to start with anamorphic in the future.
The calm voice make the difference. Thanks for the job.
Great video. Love the way the video takes up the whole screen when using phones that are wider and not having the black bars on the sides.
LOL THE GERALD UNDONE FRAME. :')
It's Blurry Background yall. Like Camera Conspiracies, jeez
I've been researching anamorphic for the past couple days and my favorite channel uploads a video on it! Thanks Caleb this is exactly what I needed!
Full Stack Creative sent me! And I didn't realize how in-depth working with anamorphic lenses can be, BUT those lens flairs!!!! Eeeeee! Pretty great.
Great video CP! Been trying to look at affordable anamorphic options for a while and your video just cleared up everything I was looking to research, so thank you for the in-depth review!
This video is my go to Ressource! Once in a while I come back here if I have questions

More anamorphic contents please, this is the best vdo on this subject on youtube.
Must be the 21:9 ratio that makes most people say that you look too wide, but since im on a 21:9 screen, it looks quite normal, and amazing!
I have been waiting so long for this video. So happy to see it!!
0/10 - You put black bars on the top and bottom of my RUclips player. 😜
Ha. Fantastic video, Caleb. Loved it! Great explanations--very thorough. 👍😍
I barely even caught the easter egg for you, lol!
"Going to watch the first couple minutes of this video to see if it is what I'm looking for." -21 min later... good job man. Very informative about all the different adapters I've been looking at.
A full guide will be great! Thanks Caleb

YEEEEEEEEES! It is finally here! The moment we've all been waiting for. Time for some wide boi action. Caleb bringing dreams to reality!
kudos ! no speech hesitation, good flow. Nice to hear !

Yessss more anamorphic please
WOW! 21:9 ive been waiting for this for so long! It fits my monitor! So happy
Def would love to see more anamorphic stuff
Thanks, this was a great intro. Now I'm interested in seeing what's possible with these oddities lol.
Great and super useful. Please do more videos on anamorphic!
Awesome video! Very informative, looking forward to more info on anamorphics! Considering to start filming with them in the future, so this was very helpful. Thanks!
I have a 21:9 monitor! This video was so pleasing!!!
I ordered Russian Zeiss copy lense made in anamorphic type . Can't wait to get it.
Great rundown on the various options, Thanks for all your effort.
PLEASE do an anmorphic series/guide. It's the perfect topic, that while talked about, not many go in depth or talk about the best products, monitors, etc. To use when shooting anamophic. Thank you so much for your work
Awesome video Caleb! Thanks for putting in the time. I'm sure this will be helpful to many!
Thank you!!! Love your channel BTW!
It just looks SO TASTY! I'd love to shoot some promos with that sort of aesthetic.
At 5:19 --> Nikon E-Series 50mm f 1.8 pancake lens. I love that lens.
Great work. Always been curious about this and you explained it perfectly. Cheers. Ry from Dubai
It's about love not just money I love learning thank you teacher
Awesome video Master Caleb !
More on this would definitely be welcome, especially with the GH5 which is still holding its own in 2019.
Thanks for this Caleb. Makes me want to only buy those new Sirui lenses for this whole area and avoid the hassle!
This is so great. PLEASE do a video where you build out one of the Kowa or Isco setups with single focus. Or make a guide. I'd buy it!!!!
Boy, them light flare is sweet, but that conversion is off.
Great man it was so complete,
Thanks for sharing.
One of my favorite videos of yours. Best intro to anamorphic lenses, on the interweb. Would definitely love to see more on this. Great job! :)
That thumbnail shows a more shy version of the duckface. Ich bin bereit für die Liebe!
Amazing video, sooo many info !!! Congrats ! I always wanted to shoot Anamorphic, please make more Anamorphic videos :)
Awesome!! More anamorphic videos please!
Very intelligible, concise and to the point. Thank you so much!

Thanks for creating this video! I, for one, am very interested in more anamorphic content from you, so you get my vote to do more. Thanks again!
Yes a full guide would be amazing!!
Great video. Yes please more anamorphic vids!
What a great video. I had no idea what anamorphic was when I saw it in camera settings. I love your video quality too. I saw your video on the BMPCC4K too. I'm probably going to get it after the Blackmagic Raw. Its pretty beastly
Love anamorphic. I would love to see a series and or a guide.
Great video, best overall intro and guide video I have seen on anamorphic and I have been doing a lot of research. A more in depth guide or series would be great too. I reached your same conclusions about the slr magic, thanks for demystifying the projection lenses, nobody else has really done that.
Would love to see more of anamorphic lens videos ;) I still want to buy one but can't decide which one is the best option for me.
A guide? Immediately yes. Thank you brother:)
Yes more anamorphic stuff! Series!
You seem a bit over stretched tbh.
Love this video! Great work!
I would love to see a whole anamorphic series!
Would definitely like to see more (guide or series). Loved the vid!
A great guide would be great :)
I am many anamorphic lenses to test, but it's so hard to use i don't find the time
Would love to see some videos on wireless monitoring like the guy has towards the end of the video. Great video!
Are you over-desqueezed? Footage looks too wide and squished.
wiiiiidddeeeee boiiiii
yhe same.
megachonker
Isn't it possible to correct the over squeeze in post?
Thing is I was thinking this might be another addition to my setup "I shoot instagram car videos" but this is pretty much impossible to carry or use with a gimbal, great informational video tho really enjoyed it!!
An in depth guide would be great, I use Vid-Atlantic's Cinemorph filters at the moment with my gimbal, and I love them.
Great one! Definitely would like more.
Great, concise video. Thanks Caleb!
Thank you Matt!!!
Great!
I was wondering about the filter clamp
Awesome video for something I have been looking for, but would like a more detailed video. Especially for the X-T3. Please and thank you for all you do!
That's right! For me anamorphic is wide angle and distortion. The streak is unwanted side effect.
TIP... for anyone using projection lenses, (I also use this with my SLR Magic adaptor) when aligning the verticle axis I pick an object I know for the most part is a right angle, like a door frame and with gridlines on my monitor. Hope this may have helped.
I was gonna... but I mean the internet already did. I will save ya the extra headache.
Keep up the great work! Don't always trust the numbers.
Thanks for this video. Please give us more and make more videos about anamorphic, i would love to see a nice setup for the sony a7iii.
Yes! I would love a full guide on this. I'm a gh5 and canon eos-r shooter. GH5 for real estate video walk through's and would love to see if anamorphic would make sense to just give a more cinematic feel of the real estate video's. Looking for the most practical. Also, if used on a canon eos-r, can the SLR Magic allow autofocus for the most part? Thanks and keep up the great work!
Nice, Caleb! I just brought a anamorphic lens! Good stuff, sir!
More more more! :-) Thank you! Series **AND** Guide! This is so awesome!
