  • Johnston Island played an important role in Operation Dominic, the 1962 atmospheric nuclear test series conducted by the United States. This film shows how Johnston Atoll was greatly expanded after Dominic to support future test operations.
FYI: you'll find me at the new skeet range after I'm done with my prime rib dinner.

Such a great history aside from the nuclear and chemical contamination. Wish it was maintained as a tourist destination.
My dad flew there several times in the USAF.

I pulled up Johnston Island on Google maps, the island is bare now. No sign of all those wonderful taxpayer funded facilities. Such a shame.

Sad that the buildings were torn down. With that long runways ideal for future usages by the military 👌. Now to reuse the island for any reason making it less feasible.

It is sad that they tore down all of the buildings. I do agree with you that the island would be more usable if many of the buildings were still standing. Just about all of the buildings were torn down for strategic purposes.

Just even using the the islands 🏝 for coast guard purposes for rescue and emergency services like 👍 wake islands. DOD should relooked at the reinvesting in it again.

I was on the JI closing team, the reason that the JOC was left standing was money, we did a complete strip and gut of the inside and put steel shutters on all of the windows and doors. I think that it would have costs another $15-20 million dollars to bring the whole thing down and remove the debris.
