Alan B. Carr's, 'The Elegance of Fusion: The H Bomb's Origin Story 1920-1945' (READ DESCRIPTION)
See the complete presentation (including the film clip) here: ruclips.net/video/JDC0PPU_JRk/видео.html
One minute of the lecture has been removed by RUclips: a video clip from the movie 'Oppenheimer' showing a group of Los Alamos scientists laughing at Edward Teller for proposing the idea of a thermonuclear weapon. Like many things in the movie, the actual history is quite different!
The hydrogen bomb is one of the most innovative, terrifying, and politically consequential inventions in history. Most accounts of the H-bomb's story revolve around the first full-scale test, conducted in fall 1952. But the H-bomb's biography can be traced back to 1920, when the concept of nuclear fusion was ...

This video shows the watertight containment vessel being prepared for the Crossroads-Baker device, which was submerged 90 feet below the surface of the lagoon at Bikini Atoll. When the device detonated on July 24, 1946, some of the most iconic images of the nuclear testing era were captured. To see more, consider my previous upload, Operation Crossroads: Able and Baker Day Tests.

Rare Footage of Trinity Test Tanks in Action (rescanned)

Specially modified tanks played an important part in the world's first nuclear test. After Trinity, tanks fired rockets into the crater area to collect highly radioactive samples for analysis. Each rocket, which remained tethered to the tank by a wire, was tipped with a scoop; these scoops dug into the earth to gather soil samples. Lead-lined tanks carried Herbert L. Anderson and other Laborato...
Project Sedan: A Nuclear Excavation Experiment

In 1962, Lawrence Radiation Laboratory scientists performed an excavation experiment using a nuclear device. The objective was to create a large crater at the Nevada Test Site, while producing a minimal amount of radioactive contamination in the process. This was not a weapons test, but rather a test to demonstrate the feasibility of nuclear detonations for peaceful purposes. Sedan explored the...

What is more amazing is that after the hole is finished, miners go down the shaft and hollow out a test chamber. Some of the test chambers were huge, one was a 150 foot diameter sphere to investigate shockwave decoupling. It took 2 years and removed 250,000 tons of material. In the deepest holes, 50'c+ water would literally spray out of the walls.

I was the Strategic Defense Initiative Organization (SDIO) Program Manager for Particle Beams. SDIO funded the Neutral Particle Beam effort at Los Alamos National Laboratory. See also the Beam Experiment Aboard a Rocket (BEAR). I recently published a book on Barnes and Nobles on this topic “The Guardian A Space Based Neutral Particle Beam A powerful Guardian of peace. “ OSD restarted the program in 2018. The effort was terminated due to budget priorities. The Space Force has command and Control and sensors but no weapon.

Although the specific impulse of this type reactor/propellant can be very high, just look at the exhaust plume of the nozzle in this and similar videos. There is virtually NO thrust. There isn't a hint of a shock diamond. Based on the visual flow stream, I'm guessing that the nozzle exhaust pressure might be at about 100-to-200-psi, as based on steam venting comparisons. Using Water as the propellant would raise the total thrust by a decade or more, and the volume of the tankage would be reduced by a factor of 100-less or more, and not require as much insulation. The reduced SI would be well offset by the weight loss and size reduction of the actual rocket.

This is a very interesting space program. It started with the KIWI reactor that had 100MW and produced 5000 lb (22 kN) of thrust. The Phoebus 1 had a power rating of 1500MW and produced 50 000 lb (222 kN) of thrust. It ended with the Phoebus 2 ( not the 2A variant) which had a power rating of 5 000MW and produced 250 000 lb (1.1 MN) of thrust. After the Phoebus 2 came ther NERVA program and was meant to actually power spacecraft but sadly they never used it. To put this into context, the current version of starship (booster) produces 69.9 MN of thrust from 33 engines, so 2.11 MN/engine

In this video Teller was so much kinder to Opie than when we talked briefly about 'Opie' in 1974 (Vietnam was 'semi-concluding' in 74, but divisive anger was still in the air). In Teller's later writings, he went back to less anger as he described 'Opie'. I think Dyson Freeman described Teller perfectly! ... That said, I found Teller to be very entertaining and he was VERY kind to me and the several folks at UCLA during his weekly visit from his main office in the Bay Area... In my firsthand opinion, some of the comments below unfairly describe Teller.
